2 Cats is our "go-to" place whenever we are in Bar Harbor.  Luckily, 0 Cats were harmed in the creation of the meals... so, don't let the name fool you!  There are often cats roaming around the patio so if you are deathly allergic, it might be best to steer clear.

The hubby and I have been there probably six times over the past few years and each meal was a delight.  The breakfasts are memorable, the atmosphere is fairly relaxed, and the service is friendly.  We make it a point to stop whenever we are in Bar Harbor and will gladly wait for a seat on the patio.  Definitely get the biscuits with strawberry butter - delish!

I'm looking forward to our trip back to that area this summer and another visit to 2 Cats!

Nice big rooms, but still feels cozy. No lace, no flowery curtains, no teddy bears - a great alternative to the stereotypical B&B! Their cats walk in and out of the rooms like they own the place, which I think is great. But if you have allergies, you might want to stay away (though I don't think you'd be looking at a place called 2 Cats if you do...)

Great service, friendly staff. The breakfast is wonderful - vegan options too!

During our last day visiting Bar Harbor, I'm glad we stopped by here for breakfast and totally recommend it!

Here's a tip when the place is packed and you don't feel like waiting to be seated  order to-go!

It's a short walk to the waterfront for a sweet view. The morning we were there it was crazy crowded and opted to order to-go and went across the street and sat on another store front's bench (they were closed, so no hard feelings, right?). Added entertainment were the children riding around on their bikes from the rental store, surprisingly hilarious.

Ordered pancakes with strawberry butter and it came with sides of potatoes and other stuff I don't remember. I tried their cat paws too and they were fresh out of the oven and delicious. The portions are large and reasonably priced considering the quality ingredients everything is made with.

Can't imagine having a better breakfast than what I had at 2 Cats!

This might be the best brunch place in all of Bar Harbor.

I don't say that lightly of course, but anyone who ate what I ate would no doubt be inclined to agree. Locals might have already cemented 2 Cats as their brunch of choice, but judging by their vast inventory of t-shirts and restaurant memorabilia, it seems tourists have caught on as well.

2 Cats looks more like a bed and breakfast than it does any restaurant. Like most businesses in Maine, "local" establishments may as well be from someone's actual house. I wouldn't be in any way surprised if anyone actually lived here. This is of course, beyond the actual infamous two cats, which despite my fondness for felines, never showed.

While I never saw them, what I did see was a vibrant outdoor eating crowd. I opted to eat outside as well, to breathe in the clean Maine air and enjoy what I already knew (just on Yelp ratings alone) would be an outstanding meal. Despite my arrival during brunch primetime (1:30pm on a weekend), I managed to skip any wait entirely and  was situated right next to the kitchen, where the aromas of breakfast had me in a hunger induced trance of anticipation and limitless imagination.

To start, I started off with their homemade biscuit and strawberry butter. The biscuits were flakey, buttery, and moist, and when combined with the smooth butter of strawberry concoctions was just out of this world good. When the butter slowly melted on the hot biscuit, it was like candy in a biscuit.

When in Maine, get a lobster. And that's exactly what I did, by ordering their lobster omelette, which came with some nicely seasoned home fries (even though I was holding out for hash browns) and low and behold, another flakey, homemade biscuit, fresh out of the oven (!!). My omelette was lovely, a smooth texture of egg enveloping juicy chunks of lobster inside, all of which tasted fresh and delicious. The real star of my table was the lobster benedict, a thin English muffin topped with a good chunk of lobster meat, buried under a poached egg with some homemade hollandaise sauce. It's the way breakfast was meant to be in Maine and one of which I wasn't soon to forget.

But like all things in Bar Harbor, it was pricey. $15 for a plate of quality lobster filled entres is understandable, but a lot of the items on the menu seemed like it was from the West Village in Manhattan than it was for a small city in Maine. I did love my meal, but the $40+ for two felt a tad pricey, even for something like brunch. But would I come back? In a heartbeat. Whether you're a tourist or a local, good food in in Maine is something that no one should ignore.

"Two Cats" is a nice cozy homestyle breakfast eatery located at the end of Cottage Street in Bar Harbor, ME. Even though there are many breakfast options in Bar Harbor, "Two Cats" is my top favorite. Reasonable prices and a good serving of the food. There are mornings when I can't even finish my breakfast and will have to take the rest home. My favorite are the banana walnut pancakes, I am not a huge fan of pancakes and is more of a french toast person, but when I come to "Two Cats", the pancakes are at the top of my list.

While eating, you may be greeted by two cats, who actually started the place as a breakfast place for homeless cats who were hungry and then decided to open it up to humans, but seriously, there are two cats who do walk around and jump on the shelfs as they watch the people eat. Nothing to be scared of, unless you are allergic to cats.

If you are ever in Bar Harbor looking for a breakfast place, this is the place to be. It has the style of a Bed & Breakfast (the building is an old yellow house), the sounds of cats purring, and the smell of fresh pancakes and coffee!!

Probably the best option for breakfast in Bar Harbor. We visited it once, the next day tried another breakfast place a couple of blocks away. On our final day in Bar Harbor it was back to Two Cats.

We got seats outside on the first day, but they were on an enclosed porch, so only somewhat outside. That was great because it was a brisk morning, and coffee only warms you up so much. I got the farmers breakfast, others tried the omelets and wild blueberry pancakes. The food was great all around. The fresh orange juice and strawberry butter for the biscuits was excellent.

We were seated almost immediately on both visits, and the waitstaff was quick and friendly; but we visited at the end of the tourist season, so I expect this place gets pretty crazy in mid-summer.

I, like a few others, wish I could give this place 5 stars - the food is MOST EXCELLENT!

We visited this place twice - had I reviewed this place after our first visit, it would be 5 stars all the way.

On our first visit, we were promptly greeted by a lovely young lady.  The food was amazing & the service was impeccable (a woman with very long hair served us - we thought she was the owner, as she was doting on us like royalty).   We loved it so much that we decided to go a second time on our last day in the area.

Our second visit was a Friday morning - the last Friday in Aug - the area was still pretty busy as a whole, but most vacations were winding down & school was starting again for a lot of people.  It was evident, as it was not very busy.  We were the ONLY ONES in line.

We were "un-greeted" by a tall, young man with a heavy accent - he was not happy, didn't even look us in the eye.  He had been arguing with someone inside & appeared to be quite angry.  I say we were ungreeted because he never said a word to us - he looked at the wait list (there were plenty of open seats), almost didn't say a word to us... I said: Good morning - 3, outside please?  He looked at me with disgust & said something to the effect of: "Hold on..."   Well, he never came back to seat us - he came back with a phone in his hand, arguing & yelling into the phone... but never came back to seat us.

We left...  he was rude & his behavior was downright disgusting.   To the owners: he does not deserve a job that requires the utmost professional demeanor.

Sadly, I was very disappointed - the food is really amazing, but we are paying customers & this place would not be standing if people won't patron this place.  Its important to note that our first visit almost did not happen, as the reviews about the bad service were really hard to ignore.   We were delightfully surprised & really wanted to go back...unfortunately, it seems as thought the original reviews still stand...

    Oh, my.  What a find.

On a whirlwind day trip to Mount Desert Island, we stopped for a late breakfast and dined at 2 Cats because it was the only place in town still open in October that served breakfast late.  (Why don't more restaurants do this?!?)

Warm, friendly service, and a menu that's truly mind blowing.  I wish I could remember everything my 2 friends got...some wild Maine blueberry pancakes that were literally HALF blueberries.  A lobster omelet that must have had a quarter pound of lobster meat in it.

I couldn't look any farther beyond the Mediterranean breakfast.  Two grilled polenta cakes surrounded by lightly dressed greens, each nesting a poached egg, topped with caponata.  Caponata is one of my FAVORITE human inventions.  So I had to try it.

The waitress's eyes brightened when I ordered it and said how much I loved caponata, and she said theirs was the best she'd ever tasted, and she was a world-traveling dancer.

I must say I have to agree with her judgement.  The caponata BLEW MY MIND.  And I've spent oodles of time in Sicily and eaten caponata in every seaside village on that whole island.  I had to go back into the kitchen and rave to the chefs about how amazing it was.  They thought I had lost my mind.

The strawberry butter was delicious, and their biscuits are crusty and buttery.

Combine this with an astounding all-weather patio (heated, too!) and you've got one of the most memorable breakfast experiences I've had.  (And it's a few blocks off the hustle and bustle of the main drag, so it's nice and peaceful.)

I can't wait to come back and stay at their B&B!  Oh, and the namesake kitties roam the dining room and patio, lending their personality the to the charming, quirky atmosphere.

    VERY memorable!

If you had asked me yesterday I would have told you 2 cats was my favorite restaurant on the island.  How quickly things change.

Let me start by saying I have spent a lot of time in Bar Harbor.  My family has had a home on the island for 25 years.  I spent my summers during college working here and have been back for a couple of weeks every year since then.  Although I am not a local, I am by no means a tourist either.

Yesterday I went for breakfast at 2 cats.  We were told it would be a 20 minute wait, which I have come to expect.  While checking in I saw the host (a tall, gruff man named Mitch)  get in an argument with a woman who had been waiting for over an hour for a table.  She approached him to see if there was any chance she missed her name being called, saying it was already 10:05.  He looked at his telephone and said "No it isn't.  It's 10:03 and I have written down right here you came in at 10:15." She told him there must be a mistake as it wasn't even 10:15 yet.  He told her she would have to wait for her name to be called, with no acknowledgement of his error (although he was quick to correct her time by 2 minutes).Needless to say this was a bad first impression.

I waited 30 minutes before it was my turn to approach the host to see if I had missed my name being called.  There had been a few names called that were never answered, so I thought that perhaps he had spelled or pronounced my last name incorrectly.  The response was "That is not possible.". I asked "Are you sure?" to which he responded "Just let me do my job." Wow, Mr Congeniality!  There was another woman at the desk the same time as me who had also been waiting much longer than anticipated.  When she told him so and said he had seated people after her already, he first argued with her then told her she could have the next table.  She got seated right away, while I continued to wait.

In the mean time I watched two other parties that had absolutely checked in later than me get seated (I know because I watched one have trouble parallel parking while I waited for my table).   I approached the host again to tell him that I know he must have lost track of our reservation to which he replied "We're busy.  I'm just trying to do my job." At that point my husband told him he was an a## hole, which he was, and we left.

I really wish I could figure out what happened to my beloved breakfast spot.  Perhaps it is easy to treat visitors like that when there's a good chance you will never see them again.  I have certainly seen it in other touristy places.  But as I established before, I am not a tourist.  Over the years I have been to the restaurant dozens of times, brought uninitiated guests, and have referred everyone I knew that was headed to Bar Harbor.  Unfortunately, given my most recent experience at 2 Cats I will think long and hard before I do that again.

Great food, great atmosphere, excellent service. Price is on the high side, but like everything, you pay or good quality.

My wife and I shared a fruit cup for an app. Fruit was delicious and fresh. I had the Mediterranean breakfast. It was delicious. Great combo of flavors, and the poached eggs was done to perfection. Had fresh squeezed grapefruit juice... very good. My wife had a scrambled egg, ham, and home fries. It was good, but that's a tough meal to screw up. She had fresh squeezed OJ.

The owner served us. He was kind, professional, and prompt. An excellent experience all around.

Great little joint in Bar Habor, the place is uniquely decorated between the cat theme and the 2 live cats (yes... there are actually 2 cats here... don't come if you are allergic to them).

I got the farmers breakfast, and my friends got pancakes and hot chocolate. The farmers breakfast was good, eggs were done well, spicy potatoes were fresh, and sausage was good. Best part was the biscuit with strawberry butter, I devoured that in no time. My friends thoroughly enjoyed the pancakes, and the hot chocolate was perfect after a cold morning on the mountain.

    Would come here again!

I went to 2 Cats on a recent trip to see Acadia. We went on a Sunday morning (shortly before lunch) and were seated quickly, despite there being five of us. Overall the food was good. I had the summer scrambler, scrambled eggs with sun dried tomatoes. Wasn't too my taste, but not bad by any means. I had a muffin, which was quite good and reasonably priced. The fresh squeezed orange juice was great, although at nearly $5 a glass, it should be. The biscuits and strawberry butter, while good, don't really live up to the hype that others have given them.

Basically, I'd eat here again and enjoy it, but since I've only been to Bar Harbor the once, I'd probably want to try out other places first.

I went to 2 Cats in 2007 on recommendation from a friend, and absolutely loved it.

When I just came back to Bar Harbor, I convinced my parents that it was worth to forgo the hotel breakfast to check out this great little spot.

They were so sold on the first time, I even got them to go back the second time.

My breakfast of choice?  Tofu scramble.  this is the best scramble I have ever had.  I don't know what seasoning they use, but it is fantastic.  It is made with onions, tomatoes and avocados.  So good.  So, very, very good.  It comes with home fries- which are good, but to be fair, i hardly eat any  of them.  Why?  Because I also order a side of raspberry almond pancakes.  Yep.  I sure do order 2 breakfasts.  :)

Anyway, here's the bottom line.  Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.  I love sweets.  So the idea that I get to order sweet food and call it a meal really appeals to me. But I am pretty picky.  Like I said- the scramble- best I've ever had.  The pancakes?  So good that syrup isn't necessary.  The biscuit?  Flavorful, just chewy enough, and served with a strawberry butter that is out of this world.  Top it off with fresh squeezed oj?  You better believe we were all glad to go back the next day.

Also worth noting- both days our waitstaff was extremely friendly, prompt, and accommodating- even offering us an umbrella to borrow because it started raining while we were eating.

So delicious and home cooked with wonderful service and if you eat outside like we did you might get lucky enough to be greeted by the cats! I think I might go again before I leave. Did I mention it also adorable?

So we went again on our last day and we will miss this place! We shared pancakes that were so delicious and the avacado omelet. Mmmm real maple syrup and the home fries with their house hot sauce was sooo incredible. You must buy a bottle to take home (hot sauce).

Brunch is my favorite meal EVER and 2 cats is one of the best brunch spots I've been in my 25 years of life because it has somethin' a little unique about each of its dishes.

Walked in to adorable, cozy decor as if it were someone's home.

The Food (in order of deliciousness):

    1) Lobster eggs benedict (Daily special) - lots of lobster served on top of a BISCUIT! yes, a big fat fluffy home made biscuit. Served with a side of house potato, which was spicy, flavorful and a tad sour.

    2) Blueberry pancakes - 3 giant dense thin pancakes that literally looked like it was STUFFED in the middle with blueberries.

    3) Salmon Eggs benedict (with wheat toast instead of biscuit) - the poached eggs were a TINY bit overcooked and they were a definitely stingy on the smoked salmon (1 sliver that didn't cover the single slice of toast!), hence minus 1 star!

    Other Pro's:
    - There is sugar free syrup
    - The 2 Cats hot sauce was awesome!!
    - Friendly, lovely service
    - The 2 live cats made their appearance and didn't stick around to cause  allergic reactions.

A friend recommended 2 Cats as "the" place to go in Bar Harbor. She was right--it is the best place in town and one of the top 3 breakfast places of all time.

The blueberry pancakes are simply the best pancakes and best blueberry pancakes with the right amount and size of blueberries. Each dish was a unique, fresh take on old favorites without being pretentious or ruining a dish. The eggs benedict were perfectly displayed. Their biscuits are simply delightful. I wish I had been able to try everything else just so I could experience the strawberry butter properly.

The service is very friendly and very willing to accommodate special requests. And I did meet one of the cats who was also very friendly!

It was a toss up between three and four stars for two cats.  I agree with everyone the biscuit and strawberry butter was amazing the rest of my breakfast was just ok.  I had the mushroom Boursin and scallion omelet.  The pmlet was missing seasoning.  O almost never add salt to food on restraints and this needed it.  The home fries had great taste but were a little soggy for my liking.  The coffee was solid and the orange juice was fresh squeezed. I can't believe it cost me forty dollars for me and my bf to eat breakfast.  I would go back but I would get a side of biscuits to go and skip the rest.

This was such a cute and cozy place.  The decor was eclectic and charming.  The dining room was full so we sat on the patio which was a little chillier, but they had clear plastic tarps down to block the wind and not the view.

Service was friendly, coffee was good (big mug!), and oh, those light  and fluffy biscuits... Lucky for me I usually put strawberry jam and butter on my biscuits, so they just cut out a step for me :)
All the food was good, solid breakfast fare - hash, eggs, bacon, sausage, but the biscuits definitely boosted them up for me!

I loved this place, my husband - not so much. He said he felt it was over-hyped and over-priced. I loved the immense selection of delicious pancakes. I had an omelette with portabella mushrooms, spinach, bacon, and boursin - AWESOME! My husband had eggs benedict which he didn't like all that much but he did enjoy my omelette. We shared an order of raspberry and almond pancakes - they were delicious. Thinner style with crispy edges - just like I love them. More like a crepe style pancake.
AND the biscuits with strawberry butter - TO DIE FOR!!!! Tempted to buy some and bring them home with me but I showed restraint!
The place does get crowded something fierce.

Our server totally humored our touristy inquisitiveness - took our picture, pointed out Acadia hiking hot spots, suggested other good restaurants in the area.

We had an omelet with smoked salmon: totally savory and amazing; and a Mediterranean breakfast plate: interesting and full of flavor.

We were seated in the patio, which is very cold at this time. We waited very long time for food. When we got it, we were cold from head to toe.  Our food was getting cold before we finish it.

The food is so so, not worth waiting at all. There is a local restaurant in my neighborhood serving similar breakfast, the service is much better.

This is hands down my favorite breakfast spot to visit when camping/hiking in Acadia.. It can be a long wait - but its worth the good coffee, spicy homefries, and biscut w/ strawberry butter

This is the second time I've eaten here, and there has been a bit of time in between. Still, same great service, and same great lobster, gouda omelete! Mmmmn, homemade biscuits with strawberry butter, delicious coffee and they make their own granola! The place is immaculate, and the people that work there are just great. Feels like you are sitting in someones old country kitchen having breakfast. If you are in Bar Harbor, don't miss this place for breakfast at least once! You will not regret it. Don't forget to pick up a momento, I got a 2 Cats t-shirt!

Fresh squeezed OJ and lemonade, so so tea selection, AWESOME pancake selection, outdoor seating in funky space.  This is surely one of the best breakfast options in Bar Harbor.  It's well worth the visit and likely multiple returns before saturation of food options are exploited in full.

Are you a Cat Person or a Dog Person?  Personally, I'm more of a Cat Person, although I do love all animals.  Upon friends' suggestions and the reviews listed here, I was dying to try 2 Cats. Situated in Downtown Bar Harbor, in a picturesque pale yellow farmhouse, they provided the best breakfast I had on my whole vacation. My friend Wendy and I were seated outdoors on their multicolored veranda facing Cottage Street.  We did have to wait about twenty-five minutes for a table, but 2 Cats has a coffee bar where one can wake up with a mocha or latte, and the charges are then added to your total bill at the end.  Here's what I had:

Mocha - Very, very sweet and chocolaty.  It perked me right up.
Coffee - Had two or three cups of this with my meal. The brand they use is called Equal Exchange, and not readily available here on the West Coast, but one can find it easy in the East.  Quite Savory.
Biscuits - Wendy, with her omelet, got a fresh baked biscuit served with Strawberry Butter.  I pinched a couple of bites of this large, decadent confection, and the essence of strawberries comes out full force in the butter.  Not overly sweet, but just right.

Smoked Salmon Benedict - I want this to be my last breakfast on Earth. This Salmon Benedict is made the traditional way, with Smoked Salmon from the bay headlining instead of ham. The eggs were perfect, and the Hollandaise sauce was that Hollandaise Fantasy that all brunch lovers search for.  Another little touch I appreciated were the strands of red onion between fish and egg. It added that little extra "Je ne sais quoi" to the assemblage.
Home Fries - Squares of lustful potato wafers served with white onions and spiced to utter perfection. The classic breakfast carb.

And I haven't even mentioned the service!  Outstanding by All.  The hostess was sweet and cheerful, the coffee barista was highly attentive, and our server, Shakti, was fantastic!  Our view from the veranda provided great people watching, and I even spotted one of the two cats, a fluffy gray-haired beast with white fur gloves.  It is my humble opinion that if you are in a one hundred mile radius, you need to have brunch at 2 Cats.

Kudos to Yelp for helping me narrow down my breakfast choices while my bf and I wandered around Bar Harbor.  Honestly, the clincher for me was the possibility of witnessing some kittehs while I ate as I am seriously cute-animal-deprived.  Unfortunately, nary a cat was to be seen during the entire hour we spent there. Nevertheless, we did enjoy our breakfasts immensely.  The dining area is very warm and inviting and really feels like you're at someone's home for breakfast.  The food was excellent.  The stawberry butter, as other people have noted, is really quite tasty -- fluffy, slightly sweet, and creamy -- and a wonderful complement to the biscuit.  The omelettes were also very fresh and flavorful.  The service was also pretty good.

I will most definitely return here if I ever have the chance to return to Bar Harbor and hopefully might have a cat sighting or 2 or 4.
