When I didn't think this place could get any better it does. Their new store is much more organized and larger. Once again went in here for some Vaca books and walked out with over 9 AWESOME books for $15.00.
Their buy back is not so great. You only get .20 cents a book. I was like WHAT??! I could get more than that if I held a garage sale.
Other than that I could live in this place. So that only leaves me with one question....
Do you think their hiring? I need a part time job here so all the money I earn I can hand back over when buying their books.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I love book stores, love reading, and appreciate independent book stores, especially in Denver.
That being said, I have to give this one a shaking in-between thumb and two out of five stars for several brief reasons:
Two stars means "Meh, I've experienced better." Three stars means "A-OK. Truth is, I have experienced better and won't lie for the sake of being a swell dude and kissing local business fundament. Two stars fits fine. Here's are more reasons I picked two stars.
Everything ain't two bucks. Some books are four bucks, some two bucks, some less, and others more.
Half the store is well-lit. The other half is so dark you can barely find books on the shelves.
Finding things. Sci-fi and Fantasy are not the same subject matter. That's why one category is Science Fiction and one is called Fantasy. They're not the same type of fiction. Why are they shelved together? No other book store does this. Westerns shouldn't be on the same shelf as historical fiction or slave/master soft porn. Classics are mixed in with popular and detective novels in the center of the store.
One half of the store has things in some kind of order while the other side has books just under general subject matter.
Buy backs/selling books. It's fine to offer people whatever you want for used books, but something like a few pennies for a book/DVD/CD that you later mark up for triple that borders on wrong to me.
Decor/signage: I understand it's a used book store in a video store...but would it really be expensive or hard to get a local muralist or wanna be artist to paint over the giant Batman pic you see etched into the wall as soon as you enter? Put a Barter ad on Craigslist and offer somebody free advertising in exchange for a nice, appropriate painting on the wall....instead of Batman. Maybe a real author instead of Batman or Cruella de Ville? This could be considered "nit-picking," but it's my review, and I personally don't like going into used bookstores and having to see pictures of cartoon characters everywhere I look when it's not necessary.
That's all for now. -

They have a lot of used books, especially in the mass-market paper back genres.
They will buy just about anything, they don't give you much for trade-in but its better than nothing. As a consequence $2 Buck Books has lots of books by romance and mega-seller authors. I'll say it again, they have a lot of books. Because they take just about any book, they have old computer software books, old text books, various religious topics, random non-fiction, odd political stuff, and it seemed like they have a nice children's section with books and games. That's all in addition to the used book store content you'd expect to find.
They don't have a lot of literature, at least not when I went, I suspect that they turn over classic titles and literature pretty fast. I asked about a couple of authors and was told that I could add my name to a wish list. If they got one of my desired books, then they would call me. That's a cool thing to do.
They're real nice in this shop, I'll go back to browse just because they are nice. I didn't see the free coffee when I went, but that's a real nice touch, too.
$2 Buck Books really is one of those book-junkie types of places. Even if they don't have the exact title that you came in looking for, you are likely to leave with something new (to you) and good to read, and for the right price. -

This is one of the best (used) bookstores I've been to! I had been meaning to go here for a while but getting a Groupon sped the process. The guy inside the store was SO helpful! I had an issue with the Groupon and he sorted it out in no time! He was also ever willing to help with finding books AND they have a fantastic selection. I spent 3 hours there and found everything I wanted. I highly recommend this place! You will not be disappointed!

I actually noticed this bookstore when one of those sign waiving guys did his best spin dance moves one day when I was waiting for a light on Leetsdale. So I guess those guys actually do work to get people in :)
The hubby is a book hound. Loves used book stores. So we made our way back. It was worth the trip. Nice shop. Bright. Well organized. A nice seating area with free coffee (not sure if they have free wi fi). Decent selection and nice employees.
The only negative I can see is the name. It is really $2 for paperbacks and $4 for hardbacks. A touch confusing. Still, a minor negative. They buy books too, but only give .20 cent in store credit. Not worth my time.
All in all though, it is a great addition. We'll be back!!Listed in: Gettin' Your Read on!

I've been making the rounds of used book stores in the area for a while. I'm an avid collector of an old series from my childhood and will buy them up anywhere I can find them. This was my first time 2 Buck Books and I have to say I'm impressed. It's a huge store and very, very well organized.
There was an area off to the side with a couple tables and there were some peole on their laptops, drinking coffee and reading books. Not sure if they have free wi-fi or not, but I have to imagine that they do. There was also a coffee pot off to the side that looked like it had free coffee for patrons.
Can't beat the prices either... Anything from $1 - $4 for used books, with most being $1 or $2.Listed in: Books & Things

The moment I passed by and saw the sign, I had to stop and check this place out. Sure enough............$2 books! Well, paperbacks at least. The hardcovers are $4. But still..................$4 books!!
I walked out with a stack of great books. So why am I only giving 3 stars? Two reasons. Setup and selection. But hey, those are pretty much the two biggest drawbacks in a bookstore, right?
Let's start with setup. Decor: there is none. They literally just took an empty office space and threw some bookshelves up. The organization is haphazard. Some sections are completely broken down alphabetically by author name, while others are just thrown together with no rhyme or reason. And like others have said, this place is very dimly lit, which is a weird choice for a bookstore.
Ok, selection. This may be a purely subjective thing, but I couldn't find a single thing I was actually looking for. Not just specific books, I'm talkin' whole entire subjects and famous authors that were not accounted for. And even some of the sections that are full need better variety. The Religion, Poetry, and Science sections in particular need some serious help.
I was going to forgive and forget most of these issues since there's a huge GRAND OPENING sign hanging over the door, but then I came on yelp and saw reviews from 7 months ago. Nice try, guys. Oldest trick in the book (which coincidentally, you don't have in stock).
Still a decent used bookstore. Can't beat the prices. Very friendly and cool staff. You'll find a bunch of books to take home either way. I hope they keep growing and work out some of these kinks. -

The Grand Opening sign is still up, but they seem to have settled in, with plenty of room to grow. They have many books in both hardback and paperback. If you are looking for popular fiction, this is quite a treasure trove. The sci-fi section is a bit meager for my tastes, but I didn't leave empty handed!
The name is a bit of a misnomer as I naively thought all the books would be $2, but that is not the case. Book hunters will appreciate that many First Editions and quality copies are mixed in amongst the microwave cookbooks.
The kids section is a real treat. Ginormous and piled high, this section contained many popular books. Many books from my childhood as well as current best-sellers were on display and had me giddy!
Not necessarily my first stop on a book hunting expedition, but worthy of a regular visit.Listed in: Book Hunter's Hit List

I know that some reviewers are annoyed that the sign still says grand opening, but who really cares when you start going regularly? Plus, isn't the grand opening sign what got you in there in the first place? Their marketing must be working.
I usually go into the store to buy children's books. The paper back picture books are 50 cents. The other books are $1 unless they are highly sought after items and then they may be $2 or $4, which is still a good bargain. They even have a slightly damaged section where the books are only 25 cents each. I like this because I can get "new" books for my daughter to read without paying a fortune. She is only 2, so I know she doesn't care if the books are slightly damaged.
I have shopped in the adult section. What I love about this store is that if you are into a certain series, they are always getting new inventory. If you are looking for a particular book or series, you can write your name on a list, or even call in and tell them what you are looking for. When they get it in (and they seem to almost always get in the books I am looking for), they will call you and hold it until you have time to come pick it up.
Also, if you are dismayed by the $4 hardbacks, take one of their business cards. On the card is a buy one get one half off coupon, which they let you use over and over. So you can get two hardcovers for a total of $6.
One other thing I should say is this: I have been going in for the last year and a half because I live close by. They have been updating their decor. Now they have seating for reading and a large table, on which I saw some guy using his laptop. They have completely reorganized (especially the children's section) and now you can find what you are looking for much easier than before. It has large windows over by the reading area, which is nice, because I personally like to read by natural light. It is a good place to go. I recommend it. -
Review from Robin H.
I found a new used bookstore - ooh an oxymoron! Anyway it is new to me and it said "Grand Opening" in the window so I am assuming it is new and it sells used books.
It looks like they are just up and running. They are still stocking the shelves. Organized well - The place is large so there will be plenty of space to expand. Somewhat cavernous and not lit the best - but hey its a used bookstore. As the name states: $2 buck books - paperbacks are $2, hardbacks $4 and they have a couple tables of $1 paperbacks. From doing a browse around they have an assortment of newer titles mixed with an assortment of older.
I am going to give this place a few weeks and come back - I am curious to see what kind of selection they have when all of the boxes are unpacked.Listed in: My list of Firsts

I've been looking for a good used book store since moving to the Denver area. The first time I went to $2 Books I was impressed with their selection, but concerned whether they were going to make it. The place was devoid of customers (other than myself) and the employee was difficult to find (hiding in back). Their books prices are great, $4 for hard backs, $2 for soft backs and they have a bargain bin of soft backs for $1 with a surprisingly good selection. The store is huge and they definitely have room to grow and space to fill with more books. They also carry magazines and VHS tapes. I found five books I wanted and at a great price.
The second time I went in the store was much more active. There were a half dozen customers and three employees in the store and they now have a coffee machine (smelled good!). I'm still getting used to the layout, but was able to find the book I wanted within a couple of minutes.
I haven't traded in any books yet as I tend to give my used books to Goodwill. But I am a fan and I think my next trip will include some trade-ins. -

Like others on here, the Dancing Sign Guy on Leetsdale caught my attention. I pulled in and noticed the "Grand Opening" banner and thought: "wow, I need to do a write-up on Yelp for this new joint"... but now I'm on here and see that they've had that banner up since March 2009?!!? I guess it really is a GRAND opening, as it's now coming up on 2 years.
But the store itself is one that will get better as time goes on. More inventory, more customers, more people selling their junk...and so the cycle goes.
Thinking everything was 2 bucks, I was a little disappointed when I found out that hardbacks were actually 4 bucks (and not to be a nitpicker, but doesn't the name "$2 Buck Books" actually translate to "2 Dollars Buck Books"?). I found a hardback that had a $1 price tag inside it; obviously it had been in a used book store before; and was a little confused when it turned out to be 4 bucks. But it all evened out, I thought, as they had a gigantic table of $1 paperbacks and other various specials.
In the end, I was thrilled that I had found "2 Buck Books". Picked up some cheap reading in their "baseball" section and plan to return once I finish these. Oh, and note to comic geeks: I did not find any comic books, TPBs or other "graphic novel" stuff in the store... but I didn't look too hard. -

Oh Happy Day !!!! I love used bookstores ...LOVE them with my whole heart. This one is no exception ... and it's so close to home!
I walked in the door and was greeted by a sweet young man who asked if I would like a tour? A TOUR ??? Of a "new to me bookstore" are you KIDDING me? Oh damn if only my unmentionables weren't spinning around unattended at the Washway Laundry next door. No time for a tour but I had enough time to nose around for just long enough to buy two 2 buck books. I started one right away!
When I checked out I was handed a business card that will give me a "buy one get one 1/2 off" from here on out ... umm I'm not good with math but I'm pretty sure this means some books will be 1 buck books! If you could see me now, you would see a very happy girl!
I cannot wait to come back with the whole family, they also informed me that they had one of the largest selection of young reader books in the area ... reading instead of Hannah Montana reruns ?!?.... OH thank you Lord ... THANK YOU!!! -

I just found this lovely little book store totally by accident. I was delighted when I walked in. Many books; pretty wooden shelves, and lots of comfortable places to set and read. The prices can't be beat and they have a surprisingly good selection for a used book store. This is a wonderful little book store - stop in and shop. Keep them in business.

I have been frequenting another book store on South Colorado when this one came along. It's closer to my house and has better hours. The first time I came in I got the idea that a bunch of college grads got together and said, what can we do with our first rate education now that the job market is the pits?
This is a good impression because there were a lot of books here that obviously intelligent types would read. There are also a lot of kids' books and the normal quick read types. I have already piled up more purchases than I have time to read. My fav so far is a book of short stories, Sadness, which title is tongue in cheek bec the author Donald Barthelme is wicked funny. I'd never know that except that someone resold their reading list to $2 Buck Books.Listed in: Hey Kiddy, Daytime Fun

I love this bookstore! I was thrilled when I saw their sign go up and until today I wasn't even aware that they buy books for store credit. The buy back program gives them the 5th star in my opinion.
This place has a great selection of fiction and though a small percentage of the books are stained and not in the best condition you can usually find a cleaner copy since they often have multiple copies.
The people here are very friendly and I too was offered a tour the first time I visited. If you haven't already then you should go and check this place out. -

I love this place! I read too much to spend money on new books, so I go here every few months and load up on literature! I've sold books back here, too, and they only seem to do in store credit, but I'm just going to spend it on more books anyway. The owner is a really nice guy, too!

I found this book store by accident, when I had taken a wrong turn. what a find!! I was so impressed. I picked up all the books I needed for a required reading list for school and if they don't have the book you need, they will take your name and number and call you when it comes in. The prices can't be beat (even at thrift stores) and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended!

Right as I walked in the door a guy that looked like a white version of the Jolly Green Giant exclaimed in a booming voice, "Now that's a woman who knows how to buy books!" I should have thrown my head back in laughter and struck a tart pose. But I missed the mark and actually felt my cheeks blush! The suitcase I was lugging was me just being my practical self and I hadn't thought twice about it. The guy at the counter had a sly grin and asked if I was using my suitcase to bring books in or haul some out. I said, "a little of both." I think he could tell by the excited look in my eyes that I thought I was going to get $1 credit per book. I could tell by the look in his eyes, that I was in for a let down. He had some very decent deflating skills and said it was a rumor probably started when they first opened and the "new peeps" were (maybe) offering deals that they can't do now. He was so nice about it, that I tried not to look totally bummed (sniffle, sniffle). I told him I was a new Yelper and would set the record straight!
So this is the real deal...
20 cents store credit per book you bring in, hardback or paperback. Huge selection for $2 per book. Romances for $1, best sellers going for more. Oh and most importantly, they call the Dummie Guide shelf, the smart people area! All in all, great selection.
Two bright stars off for having to squint due to dim lighting! That's one star per eyeball.
Even so, I might go back someday just for the tactile experience and to feel intellectual. -

I am in heaven! No need to wait to sell my books on garage sale and then spend lots of money on acquiring new ones! I was taken care of by two (!) very friendly and knowlegable salespeople. Not only I felt welcomed, but they also made me feel smart and intelligent. The trade-in policy is great. I brought in 7 books, left with 2 new. Hopefully, someday I will be able to find my bookshelves under all the books I collected. Good luck, guys!
