I've been wanting to try this place for a long time now. 2 Amy's is out of the way for me and it takes a little more effort than I usually put towards dining. ** ducks stones being thrown by dedicated yelpers ** It's just that my travels in the district usually rely on the metro alone.... I can't be bothered with the hassle of traffic and parking. So anyways, I was off last Friday and it was a nice day for a walk.
The quiet walk down Macomb Street from the Cleveland Park metro is a decent way to spend some sunny day time all by itself. Pretty much all of my time in DC is in commercial or cultural areas, and sometimes you need a reminder that people actually do live here.
We hit 2A just after you would call a late lunch and before any after work folks might come in. There was two parties seated, and the place looked pretty big with all those empty chairs. At least five parties came in by the time we were finished.
We started off with a couple appetizers to share, the bruschetta and the proscuitto/potato croquettes. I enjoyed their take on bruschetta.... and wondered "so this is authentic bruschetta"? I quickly realized that a place like this could serve me whatever they wanted and call it authentic.... I'd never know. What do I know about authentic Italian food? All I do know is that it was good. The croquettes were alright.... nothing special.
After the apps, we split the margherita extra DOC pizza. For me, it reminded me of why I like well done Italian food.... really good ingredients, really fresh, and really simple. It was pretty good.
All-in-all, it was an enjoyable meal. Service was attentive and prompt. Price was okay. Again, it's a bit out of the way for me, so I'm not sure how often I'll swing by. If I lived closer, I could see myself being there regularly.
Recommend!!
At 2 Amys, you can attain bliss by choosing a simple glass of wine, the suppli di telefono, and the DOC margherita pizza with prosciutto di Parma, while avoiding the icy evening draft by not choosing a table by the window. The suppli features a perfect crunchy coating surrounding incomparably creamy risotto accented with a kiss of tomato sauce, which gently hugs a tangy nugget of mozzarella. You will munch on these and need to remind yourself not to spoil your supper. The deviled eggs have also caught your eye, and you are amazed by the silky filling tinged with mustard and the fresh, salady pesto that is bright with garlic.
Comforted by these exquisite morsels, you will sit quietly for a few moments, until the cute hostess brings a blistered crust pizza to your table, with large strips of prosciutto blanketing the buffalo mozzarella and light sauce. The toppings have properly flavored the chewy, pillowy crust, and tangy, lightly salty, almost earthy flavors begin to float across your tongue, slowly teasing out a feeling of complete satisfaction. Soon, you will surrender the serrated knife and fork, knowing your leftovers have promised you an exquisite midnight snack. And, though you have dined for only an hour, you will feel something truly special has transpired.
Unless you order the pizza with meatballs and pecorino. Then, you will badger your dining partner as you yearn for their food, because you have discovered that pork meatballs are a touch drier than you like, and that you prefer a gooier, less sharp cheese on your pizza. Please, out of consideration for the rest of the restaurant, don't start crying unstoppably. If you take a few moments, you will realize that bliss can be yours on a subsequent visit. For now, you should console yourself by stealing cheese from your companion's crust, and enjoy the scents wafting from the kitchen.
It was nice to experience authentic Napoletian pizzas here in DC area.
I went there for a birthday dinner with my friends. We ordered roasted olives and potato & procuistto croquettes for appetizers and four pizzas for entrees. Appetizers were ok. Potato croquette did not taste as good as it looked on the menu. I was hoping to order some cod croquettes next time but changed my mind after eating potato croquettes.
Pizzas were good with very unique, chewy crust and the toppoings were fresh. They went easy on cheese which made me feel less guilty about dining late. Vongole pizza with clams was excellent and meatballs were great too. Orginal Magherita pizza was a good choice too.
The place was packed and crowded even on Monday night. It was too loud so it was hard to focus on eating....it kind of reminded me of my dining experience at Ray's Hell Burger. But they do have more dining area in upstairs that is a lot quieter.
Overall service was ok. Planning to go back there but probably will dine upstairs.
I'm glad to see that different pizza places in the DC area offer their own unique perspective on pizza. Meaning the pizza at Piola's is completely different from Pizza Paradiso which is completely different from that place in Adams Morgan that sells those ginormous slices. With all the different types, 2 Amy's also has their own variation - and a very tasty one at that. Pizzas here are pretty light with a chewy crust (chewy in a good way not chewy in a "holy crap my mouth is tired from all the chewing" way)
The two of us ordered one pizza each at the waitress' recommendation - we must've looked hungry! They are 10" each so one per person seems about right. Here's what we ordered:
- Appetizers: Bruschetta with tomato fondutta (good but only piece, wtf!). We also got Sardines - you know right now if you like sardines or not.
- Vongole pizza (Garlic, capers, cockles-small clams) with added pepperoni - damn good but the entire pizza got dry after sitting for about 10 minutes.
- Norcia pizza (salami, mozzarella, grilled peppers) - holy crap this was damn good! It did seem a bit watery on top but nonetheless tasty as hell.
Was this the best pizza I've ever had? No, that probably goes to Lombardi's in NYC. But if you like pizza and you're in the DC area, this place is a must to try.
There was a soup in the middle of our pizzas. If the soggy mess-of-a-pizzas we ordered had cost more than $15/each I would've complained. Actually, I wanted to complain even though they weren't over $15.
Restaurant was cute (I always love exposed brick and original wood beams), their dough and crust are good, but I'm not blown away, and soggy pizza really sucks.
Not bad. I was in town and wanted to try some good old Neapolitan pizza. Now, I don't have the expertise of NY or Italy to compare. But there are at least two great pizza places in Atlanta I can compare it with.
We tried the vongole and the traditional margherita. The vongole was too salty. In fact, it was too salty to finish.
The margherita was good. Lots of fresh basil and good bufula mozzarella. It wasn't the best margherita I tasted, but it was still pretty good.
The crust and ingredients were well done. The crust had good char, spring, chewiness yadda yadda, yadda. Also I don't know if it was from the vongole pizza, but it tasted a bit on the salty side. Overall, decent pizzas, except it didn't have the wow factor that I was expecting.
Also, I know they're trying to be as authentic as possible, but I hate cutting my own pizza. The knives they give us makes it very difficult to cut the pizza. I do prefer they cut the slices for us
Overall: 3.5 stars.
Ballz! What is it about being around Yelpers that brings out the inner child in me? Marianne, ordered the hot melt in your mouth dish known as Suppli a telefono, which in my mind translates to telephone supply. Hmmm. I'm not sure what that has to do with cheesy deep fried goodness (BALLZ) but I'm for it.
I'm sorry but I can't give the same rave review for the pizza. I ordered what adds up to being a white cheese pizza and it was ok but not mind blowing. There are just too many 5 star reviews on here, which made me think this would be an orgasmic experience and it just wasn't. I'll take some of the blame for not asking for basil or ricotta on the pizza. Maybe that would have kicked it up to a 4.
The service was cool and my pizza was less than $10, so I'm up for giving this place another try. Is anyone up for Round 2?
Me: Ok, one beer. But only because you're a cripple.
Ben M.: Round of drinks on the lady here, barkeep!
Hyunoo: Fantastic! I'll take one for me and one for my bosom buddy, BT!
Me: (as bartender tries to run my card while still keeping his eyes on the foxy Yelper to my right) FML.
Farzan's Mom: Oh, honey bunny, this ones on me.
Me: *PHEW*
Thank god for Farzan's mom. And for 2 Amys. Steer clear of risotto balls if you are in the general vicinity of a coronary (they are DEEP fried). But this place has pretty damn good pizza. A soft, doughy crust that thins to near perfection in the middle. If they have the chanterelle mushroom special when you go, get it. It's delish! But take your gum/mints/binaca. Garlic heaven, this place.
2 Amys: a Hyunoo sponsored event.
Not my first time at 2 Amys, but what a pleasant group to dine with. Previously, I had tried the Santa Brigida which has fresh arugula piled high. This time I customized a 2 Amys with olives and mushrooms. Quite good, but perhaps 2amys is a little over-hyped. Maybe not their fault though.
They were kind enough to give us a huge table for multiple hours - we ended up with 10 and stayed for 2 1/2 hours.... which is very generous given how crowded their small restaurant usually gets. Also have tried the suppli a telefono which are alright if you are into fried risotto balls. Really want to try their sfogliatelle..
YUM! YUM! YUM!
My margherita was just what I wanted today and totally lived up to my high expectations of any establishment touting that they serve Neapolitan pizza. An excellent balance of mozzarella di bufala, basil, and tomato supported by a thin, soft, pliable crust with a bubbly and chewy edge, kissed char here and there where it should be.
While not the best D.O.C. pie I've ever had - it comes pretty close, and with the demise of Fratelli (pout), its the best I've had in the DMV. This is true Neapolitan pizza.
What's better than joining one fellow Yelper for some great pizza? Joining a whole table of them. The Yelp Knights of the Round Pie Quest #4 descended on 2 Amys and I have to give the staff props for working with us to accommodate our group of 10 even though a few straggled in late (2 Amys doesn't take reservations).
In addition to my margherita, I did try a couple of their non-D.O.C pizzas and one of one of the starters:
Vongole (Garlic, capers, parsley, hot pepper, cockles, grana) - interesting combination of ingredients but not really to my taste; didn't notice any hot pepper, but the pie was very salty
Norica (Tomato, salami, grilled peppers, fresh mozzarella, grana) - again an solid offering but I think the flavor of the salami didn't stand up to the other toppings quite as well as I would like
Suppli a telefono (fried risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella) - this happens to be one of my favorite Italian small plates and when I saw a photo of them here on Yelp, I knew I just had to try 2 Amys' take on them. Eh, they were ok but the flavor of the risotto overpowered the delicate stringy mozzarella.
I'm glad I finally made my way here and I know I'll be back for many pies to come. Oh, they have Sprecher's rootbeer (a fact I discovered 1/2 way through my meal - thanks Brian). Another big plus - on a sunny Sunday afternoon there was no problem finding street parking in the neighborhood. :-)
If you don't like 2 Amy's, I will judge you. I will remind you that there's a reason why no one subscribes to your monthly Food and Wine column and you're instead writing a review on a free-for-all community website. I'm gonna lay it all on the line: you have bad taste.
If you came here once and wasn't impressed, I understand that this could be the restaurant's fault. Even Babe Ruth struck out. But if you've been here more than once and "don't get the hype" or "would rather have pizza from a chain," I'm gonna say your palate is flawed and maybe you should stop writing food reviews.
The pizza here is awesome. Salads and sides rock too. Service is good/normal. Doughnuts (served on weekends) weren't as exciting as I had fantasized about. The crust here is Oprah/Jesus level Orange. It may not be your preference for "pizza," but it most certainly is NOT bad.

Just cut the frikking pizza into slices already. I mean come on. I know that is how they do it Italy and everything, but it is so annoying. People want slices.
The pizza is good. It is crusty and well blistered, and the sauce and toppings are done well. The service could be better, and so could the space -it is so loud, noisy and crowded it can get uncomfortable. The waits are unreal at any time too.
Anyways, people always say you should go to 2 amys, but I think it is basically just ok. I would recommend matchbox, or red river pizza, or roscoes or a bunch of other places in the same breath.
I certainly enjoyed the pizza I had here: the margherita with meatballs and garlic, but it wasn't the be-all end-all I was expecting. Of course, I will qualify that by stating my bias going in - Neopolitan is not my favorite style of pizza. With all that in mind, it was very tasty with a good crust and quality toppings. Prices were fair and the beer list was good. Definitely worth the trip. Service was more or less on point and no complaints were made about the size of our group that significantly shrunk from its initial estimate. And as always, it was nice to see the Yelp crew.
Really really good Neopolitan Pizza. I find their basic pizza (the Amy) to be absolutely delicious, particularly adding one good basic topping like pepperoni. (btw they have really tastey tiny slices of pepperoni). They have a lot of great combinations and add-ons for a very reasonable price. They also have D.O.C. options which are legally aknowledged as italian dishes by Italy.
They also have a wide variety of appetizers that are great for sharing. The suppli is really good with tasty mozzarella cheese in the center.
Unfortunately the closest metro station is Tenleytown-AU, but is still about a mile walk. However, there is street parking close by that is usually open and isn't metered. However, try to go at a time that it won't be very crowded. I went as a party of 2 on a Friday night and the estimated wait was an hour and a half, for a party of 4 that came in right after me the wait was going to be over 2 hours. The food is great, but it'd be really hard to wait more than 2 hours for it (but also really hard not to).
Overall, its a really great place with a lot of variety and a lot of reason to go back.
Probably my favorite pizza in the DC area. Usually get either the Calzone, or the margharita pizza, and both are wonderful. The only thing about this place is that if you don't like kids, or carry out. Almost always packed, and generally with families. Haven't tried their donuts, but people love them apparently.
Finally experienced 2 Amys and was not disappointed. I will definitely be back. Very, very good. We shared a salad (v. fresh) and two appetizers (yummy potato and prosciutto fried bites - plus, an unusually good country pate) - and also shared two pizzas: a "margarita extra" (I think) and a prosciutto. Both were excellent. Loved the crust: unusually flavorful. Oh - and they had a lovely fizzy red wine that tasted sort of like sangria. Perfect with the pizza. The three of us also shared a scoop of apple cinnamon ice cream. A perfect ending to a perfect meal.
The reason I'm not giving them five stars is twofold: at 6:00 p.m. the waits are loooong (an hour), which was visibly frustrating for many people who left disappointed. Thankfully, I planned for that and put our names in - then ran errands until our 7:00 p.m. rendezvous time - but frustrating regardless. Secondly, the food comes so fast that it feels like you are being hurried (which is annoying since most have had to wait so long). Love the lively vibe, though. It is a bustling place - high energy - and you can tell it is a beloved neighborhood gathering spot.
Feel free to call me out.. been here 3-4 times, this place is nothing to write home about.
The place has the right things going for it, but it is noisy with tiled walls that make the conversations around you ear splitting loud. Ecspecially when you have a lot of young kids running and screaming around.
The pizzas, stuffed or not, are actually quite bland and flavorless. Heck they don't even drizzle enough olive oil on them... the toppings are ridiculously sparse not to say they have a ton on them, but they should have maybe say... more than TWO leaves of basil huh?
The only good thing were the sumptous pours of table wine in big glasses, nice touch. I don't get this places appeal, I've had better pizza at Pizza Paradiso which I prefer.
I read about this place in the Washington DC Eyewitness Travel book, and as I was in the area to visit Washington National Cathedral, I decided to take a walk and check it out. I'm really glad that I did!
I started out with the salt cod croquettes, as I hadn't really come across this item much on menus before, and it sounded intriguing. The croquettes were a perfect mixture of cod and potato, and they were both tasty and filling. As for the pizza, I ordered the Santa Brigida, which has tomato sauce, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, and arugula. The sauce was light and fresh, and the arugula gave it a little bit of bite. I like my pizza on the lighter side, and I like sauce that's more like crushed fresh tomatoes than tomato paste, and this pizza did not disappoint.
I will definitely return to Two Amy's when I'm in DC again.
Im going to buck convention and just lay it out: I PREFER Paradiso, particularly now that they moved on P street, to Two Amy's: The crusts are now equal now that Paradiso has a better oven. The setting and options (in terms of toppings and beverages), however, are much better at Paradiso.
Two Amy's, you're really outstanding, but you're not the best.
2 Amys Pizza devotees, please forgive me. I'm a NYC girl so my pizza standards are slightly different. IMHO, the pizza doesn't speak for 2 Amys but (and this is my attempt at redemption) the baccalau croquette is out-of-this-world. Uh-mazing! Fried yet light, this protein-packed snack alone can carry the menu.
It's the small things that really make it anyway, right? =)
I'm sorry, but I'm still a Ledo's fan. 2 Amy's was okay...I did enjoy it, but it just wasn't as spectacular as I was led to believe. I got the 2 Amy's with sausage, olives and onions, and it was pretty good. Not a fan of the super-thin crust though. I don't like floppy pizza. The service was good, so no problems there. The potato fritatta was stone cold, which was very unappetizing. Apparently it was supposed to be that way, and I think they should warn patrons of that before they order it. All in all, it was a great time out with Yelpers. Would I be returning? Probably not. It's out of my way (unless I'm crashing at Sean's) and I have too much loyalty to the deliciousness that is Ledo's. Nice place, though, and you should definitely check it out at least once. The Lady did enjoy meeting my fellow Yelpers and looks forward to returning to the area and having fun with the group again.
How did 2 Amys' margherita with sausage (my standard pizza for evaluating pizza quality) measure up during a visit last night? Not too well. The pizza looked great and had all the right textures, but the flavors were way off mark. Very sour-tasting sauce; so sour that I couldn't taste the cheese. Poor quality sausage that was too-heavily salted and bumped the pizza's overall salt level about 3 orders of magnitude higher than what it should have been - an unforgivable sin when the sausage costs $3.50.
Sorry, folks, but I would rather have had a pizza from one of the pizzeria chains.
2Amy's is a good place for pizza, but is a bit over hyped. You have probably heard of the alleged heli pad on the roof and the authentic Neapolitan pizza made following Italian LAW. Yup this place is serious about pizza, I get it.
The thing is, it's never a fully relaxing experience. The lines are long on the weekends, and once you get inside it still feels like chaos. I feel like the main room was designed to amplify sound. If there is a screaming child in the room, you Will know it. If you are lucky, you will get seated on the patio in the back that has just a few tables and is beautiful on a sunny day. good luck!
The wait isn't awful, totally fun atmosphere. I'm a fan of this spot. It's like a little jem in a city full of troubled times, this will ease your mind, and your stomach. Don't skip out on anything, every bite you take counts. TRUST ME....also try their signature Lemonade..........it's D-LIIIISH!!!
The Hype: I get it, but I really don't.
The food is good, but the experience sucks.
Call me difficult, but it irks the bannanas out of me when I have to pay for a meal that requires me to yell at my companion while eating it. I don't know if it is all the kids, the accoustics, or the smallness of the place but the din is out of control.
Order your pie to go - you'll thank me later.
I found the food to be quite good. The pizza's have great crust and the salads are fresh, clean and nicely prepared. That being said, the rating drops because of the amount of screaming kids that occupied the place during our visit. The acoustics are not the best to begin with but when amplified by the high pitched screams of little darlings, the ears take a beating. I gotta hand it to the parents however. They blissfully munch and drink away with little concern regarding their obnoxious brood.
Wait. WHAT? WHAT DID YOU SAY? I'm sorry I CAN'T HEAR YOU...
Fifteen of us walked in and got a table with relative ease and I'm telling you the best thing to do is for everyone to have each others cell phone numbers and either text each other or activate some sort of texting party line where everyone can participate. Seriously. The noise was deafening at some points. The good thing about the noise level is that if your server is cute, as ours was, you can speak softly so it forces him to come closer to you to hear what you're saying. I, of course, did -not- do this. I only *imagined* I had done so.
Kevin L. and I split the meatballs and a Margherita pizza four ways (oh, I'm sorry...did I leave out that we were saving room for Yechon?!?). I heard the meatballs were very good and those little balls of deliciousness were NO disappointment. They came with some wonderful crusty bread that was perfect for sopping the sauce up with. The Margherita pizza was good, but I would not say it was excellent. I thought it was very unusual that they don't slice up the pizza, but if you ask them to, they will. I tried one of the fried balls that seemed to contain rice and a cheese of some sort (mozzarella?) and it was extra tasty. Somehow I think their menu of small bites is the real winner in this joint because in looking at them at tables around me, they are both beautiful and delicious looking.
I would love to return to sit at what looks like a wine bar to sample some wine and have some of their smaller bites options.
I'm glad I finally got to experience 2 Amy's and would absolutely return. On a quieter night or at a quieter time.
Parking can be had down the street in the Giant parking lot. They give you three hours to spend in the neighboring businesses.
Probably the most authentic Italian pizza you can find in the DMV, almost as delicious as the best of places in Italy. The bubbly crust with the slight char, the perfectly flavorful melted buffalo mozzarella, and the perfect amount of basil both baked on the pizza and a fresh ginormous leaf on top. I just wished there were more flavorful tomato sauce, but I can manage if this is the best I can find. The husband's stuffed pizza with ricotto and prisciutto was also delicious. I just wished I ordered the suppli a telefono. You really can't go wrong with mozarella-stuffed fried cheesy risotto balls.
Love the minimal decor with black and white mosaic square tiles and subway tiled walls. Dining room can be loud because of the tiling. Big props for them (and our timing) to find seats for 14 in just a few minutes.

Not sure what more I can add to everyone else's superlative reviews. I especially like this place… Read more »
Four and a half stars.
Does 2 Amys make the best Neapolitan pizzas in the DC area? Absolutely! They've even been granted DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status by the Italian government. Similar to German Reinheitsgebot (German beer purity law), DOC limits the ingredients that can be legally used to make Neapolitan pizza (in addition to having to be made in a wood-fired oven).
So if it's good enough for the Italian government, what's not to love? Well, the noise for one, and the lines and waits for tables another, both of which detract from the enjoyment of the pizza. But if you're willing to put up with these inconveniences, you will be richly rewarded. To avoid the crowds, try and hit it on an off night (Mon-Wed) and/or head to the wine bar in the back instead of grabbing a table.
Although the pizzas are the stars here, they also serve a multitude of small dishes in addition to sliced meats and cheeses. I'm partial to the eggs with green sauce myself. Three draft beer choices, including Moretti and Weheinstephan Dunkel, but the strictly Italian wine selection is good and reasonably priced.
Problem: I wanted to try this place but it's not metroable! Yes, I am car-less...
Solution: Casually name drop 2Amys as a tasty dinner destination to my friends with cars~ Love you guys! *hug* :)
I thought this place had a cute atmosphere and we actually didn't have to wait long, although it was tough to get a spot at the bar in the back or order anything because it was so busy there! I liked that the wine list made a point of not overcharging for wine and the tiny carafes were tres cute! The waitress misheard me and tried to give me a fizzy wine but I wasn't a huge fan. My friend ordered a guinness + espresso drink which was fun and pretty good :)
The pizza was a lot like Pizzeria Paradiso and the ordering style was equally similar. You largely pick a base pizza and stack on your toppings. NoAmys is a plain "pizza"/crust for the lactose intolerant (we had to ask!). We ordered a Margherita Extra with prosciutto, a Puttanesca, and a Norcia. I really enjoyed the Norcia - it was a nice mix of sweetness and saltiness - with grilled peppers to balance out the salami. The Margherita Extra was good, but I think I would have liked the prosciutto to have a little more flavor - perhaps smoked? The Puttanesca was my least favorite. It was intensely garlicky (and I usually like garlic!) and I didn't really like broccoli (rapini) on my pizza. I think this last pizza made me prefer Pizzeria Paradiso.
Though we were immensely full, we squashed in room for dessert - and the sorbet was quite delicious. 2Amys is a cute place with good food, but the Puttanesca really put me off :( Who knows, I might be back with another star next time!
This place "use" to be the best pizza joint in DC! Mind you that they've been doing business in this hood since around 2003. I visited family back then and they took me to 2 Amy's to show off what DC has to offer.
Nevertheless over the years the quality at 2 Amy's has undeniably gotten a bit mediocre and forgetable. I'm not saying that the pizza is bad! No, its actually not bad, compared to some of the other places around in the District.I'd give their pizza a nice 3.5 stars all the way. But one thing that irks me about this place is that anytime I've gone here with my wife, its been wall to wall packed, and good for them.
Yet its the ridiculously outrageously terrible service that drives me crazy! I mean you'd think a place thats making probably a million a month in sales would hire some at least experienced waiters/servers! But no! They have some of the most dumbest, ignorant, imperious, unorganized, bunch of clams working their floor.
I highly recommend this joint for carry out, and please make sure to call in at least an hour before you want to stop in for pick up, because they're not that organized at carry-out orders either. All in all, the pizza has gotten a bit, chewy, stale, bland, and just plain old unmemorable. For a $25 pizza, I'd probably just go to Cafe Milano or someplace with a much better pizza like Sette in Dupont.
I guess its probably because the owner made so much doe in the past 6 years, he probably sold the joint and retired to a nice palatial opulent villa on lake Como, or the riveira in Positano! Oh, and the fact that toppings cost $4-5 and you end up with not even a few capers, goat cheese, or whatever else you order on your pizza is quite nerve rankling too.
It's a little overrated. But it is good don't get me wrong. Ingredients seem very fresh and good quality.
Unlike other peeved Yelpers I managed to get in without a long wait--we were seated promptly, but perhaps because it was a Sunday afternoon.
It wasn't too loud except for two crying babies.
Our server suggested the fried risotto balls for appetizer. Um....eh is all I can say.
Our margherita pizza and sausage stuffed pizza/calzone were wayy too bready. Like, 90% bread, 10% pizza if that makes sense.
I don't think I'd be willing to come here on a busy night for dinner. So I recommend coming in here for lunch or to-go.
I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet. . .
As others have mentioned (well, I didn't look that far down the page). . . The "hype", I don't get it. . .
It's okay. . . yes, just okay. . .
Is it good pizza? Yes, it's better than the homemade ketchup, cheddar, and croissant dough thing I was once served in New Zealand. But, being "authentic", and all. . . if you've ever been to Naples Italy, and driven. . . you'll see that they give anyone a license. Whether it's for making pizza, or driving. . . they don't care too much.
I'm sure they do care a little bit more about their pizza than driving, garbage pick-up, and gypsy kids being exploited by their parents to dance around on the trains begging for money while dad plays the accordian.
As for Two Amy's. . . much like other places. "Oh, it's great, you HAVE to go". You don't HAVE to go unless you like waiting WAY too long for piss-poor service (yes, I said piss-poor. . . ). If you enjoy hanging out with soccer moms and 50 kids screaming, while throwing pizza at one another it's wonderful. (and I kind of like soccer-moms. . .so, yeah. . .)
It's okay pizza. . . the dough is good. . . it's not sliced up (that I recall), so that must be where it gets all "authentic".
It's not sooooo different than say Paradiso. . .and 9 times out of 10, I'll choose that first due to the more adult-like and peaceful setting (and the crazy beer selection).
My philosophy on this place. . . "Oh, it's going to be an hour"? "Guess we're having Mexican food tonight. . ."
Excellent Pizza, the best I have had outside of Italy.
For starters we had the salt cod croquettes and the bruschetta with fondutta. The bacalao was not as good as I have had in spain, but the bruschetta was as good as anything I have had in Italy. We ordered three pizze one was the norcia and the other two where margherita with additional toppings. Every pizza tasted unique and was absolutely delicious. I even ordered one extra to take home even though I knew it wouldnt be as good once allowed to cool, even so it is better than any other pizza that I can get around here.
Absolutely would recommend this place to any fellow pizza lover, the only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because Ive been saving my first 5 star review and if the service was a bit better 2 Amys would have gotten 5. I don't blame the wait staff since the place was completely crowded. I should note however that there was no issue with waiting for the food to come out, just a little bit more attention from the waiters would have gotten a 5 star rating.
The bottom line: Very tasty pizza, tasty appetizers, excellent wine (at great prices).
Although I've lived in the neighborhood for sometime, I'd always stuck with Vace and never made it to 2 Amys...for some reason (lazy). However, after learning that 2 Amy's was the brainchild of Peter Pastan (Chef/Owner of Obelisk...perhaps my favorite restaurant) I decided to try it out last Friday.
Wife got home late from work, so by the time we got there it was a bit crowded. They said 1 hour wait but it ended up more like 30minutes.
Upon seating we were both very hungry and we ordered 2 appetizers, the polpettine (this, by the way people, is not octopus...it's meatballs) and the Cod Fritters. Both were very tasty...the cod fritters were savory, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The meatballs were in a salty (rather than sweet) tomato sauce and there were about 12 small.
For $26 we shared a sparkling red wine, designed for Neopolitan pizza. It was very tasty but served warm by our somewhat spacey waitress (it says " serve chilled" on the bottle). She did kindly offer to put the bottle on ice as we ate/drank.
We had the pizza with anchovies, broccoli rabe, and fresh mozzarella and it was great. Hot thin crust (not too crispy...I like both crisp and soft crusts) and a rich balance of flavors: salty-anchovy, slightly bitter-rabe, rich-rabe, savory-charcoal crust.
Overall, we will be back and I highly recommend 2 Amys.
When I first stepped into 2 Amys, it was bustling with happy diners, people conversing and drinking a beer and the wait staff hurrying around that tables with delicious smelling pizzas. The kitchen was open and the atmosphere was cozy- if not familial.
The wooden tables and chairs bring out a rustic aesthetic and the titles floor reminded me of the kitchen of the house i grew up in as a kid.
We ordered the bruschetta and I ordered the Norcia pizza with salami, onions and peppers. What I liked about these pizzas was the fact that it was not over-loaded with cheese, and that it was more about the ingredients and dough rather than a mouthful of cheese.
Service was fast, efficient and friendly.
This was my first time at 2 Amys and it didn't disappoint. I went with some friends and we had the suppli a telefono (risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella) and they were delicious...much better than Lia's in Chevy Chase. For a starter, my friend had the escarole hearts with anchovy dressing and it was much better than I thought. The anchovy dressing is not what you would expect, it had no fishy taste whatsoever. I ordered the 2 Amys pizza with olives and it was very tasty. The dough was a little soggy in the center, but the flavors were fantastic. 2 Amys does not slice their pizza, so you're stuck slicing it at the table, which is difficult to do when you're dining at the bar on the small high tops with two other people. We skipped dessert and headed over the The Sweet Company across the street.
Service was slow only because it was extremely busy. If you dine between the hours of 6pm-9pm expect to wait about 30-45 minutes for a table.
I have a soft spot in my heart for 2Amy's since it's where my boyfriend and I went for our first date on a cold and rainy January evening.
Oddly enough, I didn't like the pizza on our first date. Maybe it was my nerves. Maybe it was the fact that they don't cut your pizza unless you ask them to, and I didn't ask them to and struggled to cut it myself.
I've been back quite a few times since then. I finally found my favorite pizza---the calabrese minus olives (too salty). Most of the time it comes out perfect and delicious and I eat the whole pizza in one sitting and then food coma ensues. What I don't like is that sometimes I order it and it's just so so. Not sure why. :-\ Rumor is one of their head chefs left. Could that be the reason?
I still have happy naughty pizza dreams about this place, spurring me to write a review even though I haven't eaten there in a while as I no longer visit D.C on a regular basis.
I think of this place as one of the best pizzerias I've been to. After I've visited, I can't bring myself to eat any English pizza in the weeks following as it spoils my good food memories.
It can be crowded, but as Brian C says go in the afternoon if you can manage it. After previously trying a topping heavy pizza, I realised I prefer the simple plainer ones from here - such as the D.O.C margherita mentioned previously. The crust is lovely - not too heavy and the toppings tend to overload it and hide the lightness.
Looking at the negative reviews on here, yes you may have to wait - but surely that's a testament to how good the actually food is? Aren't the best things in life are worth a bit of wait?
2 Amy's London branch....? I'm still waiting...
What can I say that hasn't been said already? The vongole was absolutely the single most spectacular plate of pizza I've ever had. The Margherita was bright and tasty with wonderful mozzarella to boot. We'll definitely be back.
The only downside is that they don't take American Express, but that's just a downside because that's my preferred card and the one I have to use to take clients out, so that means no customer lunches there.
