Geannina is awesome. Put up with us and all our questions when we were getting a lower rate on car loan. We had a great experience here.

I switched to 1st United Services Credit Union a year and half ago after 15 years with BofA. They are ok. Online banking is about the same. But their ATM network is spotty. You text your address and get a list back. Worked great in NYC Times Square (is one inside the 2 story McDonald's) but in the Haight in SF, not a single one. I also hate their upselling. They are always trying to give you flyers about their next car sale, credit card balance transfer rates, refer a friend program, etc. Also, I now have to drive 5 miles to their nearest branch location. With BofA, I used to walk across the parking lot during my lunch hour. When I refinanced my home recently, I didn't bother checking their rates. I went with Fremont Bank.

I get the best rates here, but as for trying to pay loans or make payments....it becomes the worst. Also there are not enough locations near by. If I have a busy schedule and I can not drive all the way to Fremont, then I need to use online banking as usual. But apparently making a payment from another debit card or account is impossible to set up online. Also there is no phone banking during the later hours when I need it. I would like to put this as a 1 star because of all the hassle. WAKE UP 1ST UNITED.......UPDATE YOUR FREAKEN WEBSITE!!!! Copy Wells Fargo or something, at least let us make payments to accounts when we want to?! If I see no effort from them to make changes to the website....then I will give them a 1 star rating.
Updated response:
I received a speedy response from the owner and he replied with other resources to resolve my situation until they have they're website updated. It is obvious he cares about the needs of his customers and willing to take action on the responsibility. I will move the star status to 5 for great service and rates.Comment from Steve P. of 1st United Services Credit Union 9/7/2011

Props to upper management keeping up with Yelp reviews to see what their members really think about their credit union. Was contacted to see how they could improve their services which isn't really heard of much any more. Maybe when everything is settled and upgraded I'll come back and rejoin this credit union.

I joined this credit union because I am REALLY tired of the big banks always changing policies, fees and sending me updates I don't understand. This credit union has a very simple and easy to read policy regarding everything I need to know about my accounts. I only took away one star because as other people have noted, their website needs to be updated to a more user friendly website; however, being non-profit, I can understand they probably have more urgent things to focus on and I'm hoping this is on their agenda to do in the near future. I don't care about the locations. Less locations means they are saving money on overhead and won't have to take any extra money from me. This also helps keep their interest rates low because they are not having to pay extra employees, rent and other overhead costs. I look forward to my relationship with this credit union. I'll update as I use them more.

This is not directed twords this branch it is the bank as a whole. I work for Alameda county so of course they try to get us all to join so I thougt ok let me try. I closed the account 8/12/2011. The member services is terrible, they have to many unexplained fees, its very hard to get a loan, I was trying to get my care refinaced, or help consolidating my bills and it was terrible and they were taking 4.95 a month from my account and no one could tell me why. But this is the killer part, 3 days after I closed my account they posted something to it and expected me to pay them lol!!!! I dont think so I called them up so fast and let them know I will contact who ever I have to, and when they were done with me they would have wished they credited that CLOSED account that should have nerve been charged in the first placed.

Just signed up and became a fan of them pretty quick. Opened a small savings and then, refi my car loan, and rolled over my credit card!! Saved like 5-6 % on both, real nice people too!!

There are not very many offices to do your banking business and it is almost impossible to sign on to do online banking. You can only call them between the hours of 8:30 am to 5 pm M-F WHEN YOU ARE WORKING????? I tried again just now to get online with them and was bumped off two times. YUK for this institution.

This review is specifically of the Mortgage lending department. To make a long story short, they were INCOMPETENT. Do not use this credit union for a mortgage loan!!
Details if you want them: When we applied for a mortgage, we were told it would take 3-4 weeks to fund. We let them know we HAD to fund in 4 weeks. No worries, they said they would expedite. It took multiple phone calls to get the appraisal scheduled. I followed up to make sure they had the appraisal. Yes, they had it, loan was in final review and we would receive a phone call soon to schedule signing. A week later and no phone call, so I called them. After 15 minutes on hold I was told there was a problem but they would not say what the problem was. (We have good credit and borrowed less than 50% of the value of the home.) We finally signed papers, but they paperwork was wrong. (I specifically requested that the closing costs NOT be financed.) Then we were told it would take a week to fund! So, almost 5 weeks total to fund.
PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM! -

I always get the best customer service here. They're always personable and helpful. They are so much better than one of those big name banks. They do it all here...auto loans, home loans, home equity lines, money market accounts, IRA, etc. Support your local credit union and take advantage of the savings.

I've had an account here forever (literally, it was my first account) and I've never gotten customer service at a larger bank that comes close to this credit union. They are only in Alameda Co. but their interest rates are pretty decent, you can always get someone on the phone to answer your questions and there is rarely a line at the branch locations. No complaints here.

I have been a member her for over 10 years. Primarily with just an extra saving account I never remembered to close! BUT I decided to look into moving my VISA to the credit union. I have to say I had the BEST service! And I am a stickler! (some may say too demanding and harsh..??) I was thrilled with how pleasant my service rep was and on multiple contacts I had with her. (Her name was Tracy) I have decided to move my multiple bank accounts ALL over to 1stUSCU. And we know how annoying changing those accounts and bill pay etc is right? But I'm willing to brave it for the customer service benefit!

I have been a member with 1st uscu for 16 years and recently had an issue with switching over my last credit card to my other checking account. The change was made online and didn't go through. My credit card company tried to take payment out of my checking account, but there weren't any funds. My credit cards' system automatically tried again and again, and each time the credit union charged me an over limit fee. IT wasn't until my credit card statement came the following month that I saw the last payment hadn't gone through. At this point, I realized that when I did the change (switch which account it drafted from) online with my credit card, something went wrong. I tried to explain this to the rep on the phone and she didn't seem to care. They say they do, but they really don't, it's just a line to try and pacify the customer. This is how they make their money. In the end, after the explaining & talking to a manager, I mean after all a computer is a machine and they make mistakes, 1st united will only wave 1 fee out of the 4 that were charged. There was obviously an error and no one bothered to give that extra customer service you would expect from a "credit union". It kind of makes me sad, I have been with them since I was 16 years old. They held my 2 car notes until I paid them off, my son's saving and all my parents money. I have been with Bank of America the last year (after years of pleading for me to leave my credit union) and I have to say their customer service is better, they notify me when there is an issue or when something just doesn't seem right. I'm positive if this happened with Bank of America, they would have handled the situation different from the very begining.

I'm going on 25 years with 1stUSCU and I most likely will never leave. My Hayward Branch has friendly tellers who greet you like family. Puts regular banks to shame!
