Dr. Velano is excellent with extractions. I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr.Velano and it was over so quickly and painlessly. The longest part of the procedure was waiting to numb up. After that I was done in less than five minutes. I healed remarkably fast and had no complications. I felt silly for being so terrified.
Also the prices are quite reasonable which is important for those without dental insurance.
Bad News Bears. TV Scam Exposé Waiting to Happen.
My experience seemed fine, straight forward. Then, the billing fancy footwork began. And, continues. Don't do it. Please. Save yourself the trouble.
AVERAGE. This is so incredibly average and nothing special about this place whatsoever. In fact, I'm switching dentists. It's not that they are bad people, (I REALLY like Dr. Irene) but its just meh. And its really far from my house.
I never had a bad experience, other then sometimes they make you wait an exceptionally long time in the dentist chair, but I want to know if there are better places out there. I say look for greener pastures. Or fancier dentist chairs.
[ This all happened in the winter of 2006-2007, but I had never hated the dentist before I visited this place, so I think it's worth writing about. ]
Dr. Beltran was awful. She's a nice enough person but her services rendered were terrible. I was way overdue for a dentist appointment and had to have 4 cavities filled. A week later I was taking a drink of a coke with ice and I felt a painful ZING all the way down to the root of my tooth. She hadn't properly sealed the filling. Dr. Park had to fix 2 of the fillings Dr. Beltran had done- and she did so for free. The one star is for Dr. Park who is a great dentist working at a crappy practice.
I was referred by a coworker to Dr. Dennis George and am totally happy - see other review. He's more expensive, but I've learned my lesson THE HARD WAY about being cheap when it comes to dental care.
I went to First Family for the first time last week. I have always walked by there and noticed the slick waiting room beckoning, "Come, let our friendly and competent staff treat your teeth like we treat our a fine contemporary furnishings." Unfortunately, the examination rooms aren't as slick as the waiting room. In fact, my chair broke during my initial examination and I had to be moved to another one. There's nothing more humiliating than a grown man walking around with a paper towel chained to his neck.
Despite these problems, the dentist and hygienists were friendly and most definitely explained what was going on (they must read Yelp) and didn't engage in any more cross-talk than I have heard any other dentist/doctor do. I had to return with for a filling and that visit went a bit more smoothly and was over before I knew it. The dentist had a come-in-anytime policy if I had problems with her work.
I'm overdue for a dentist appointment, but I don't want to come back here. I had my first cavity on my last visit, and the dentist just went for it - numbing, drilling, filling - without warning or explaining what would happen or what was going on. I've never had the drill! I didn't know! I felt like once I was in the chair I was a piece of meat rather than a person.
If anyone can recommend a great dentist on the North Side, write me!
I wish I would have checked this site before walking in there.
I booked my appointment a week in advance, I waited almost an hour and a half to be seen. One receptionist was nice and another woman was so incredibly rude I wanted to tell her she needs to take a yoga class.
The doctors were ok, it was quick in and out, not very gentle with the needles at all. And now for the worse part, the filling was not done right.
It's super super sensitive, it's not filled all the way so food gets stuck in there all the time. It's gross and it hurts now just as much as it did a month ago when I first went in. I am dreading going back to get it fixed but I can't afford to go to another dentist to do the job right. Don't go there!
I had one of the worst dentist experiences ever with the periodontist that works at 1st Family Dental. My appointment was at 3pm and at 4pm he finally comes to the front desk. When the receptionist tells him that I've been waiting, he tells her he'll take me next but wants to get one other person "in and out". I was literally standing right in front of him. I knew right then that it wasn't going to be a good experience. When I finally did get in to see him, he was a complete ass. Half way through the consultation I told him I'd rather see someone else. I literally just got up and left and never went back. If you need a dentist in Andersonville I'd recommend Andersonville Dental on Foster. The difference is night and day.
I moved to Chicago and had to pick between Andersonville Dental and 1st Family. Based on the reviews and Andersonville Dental appearing on my insurance company list, I opted to go there. I took my other half in for an ortho consult today which was no charge, and they were incredible. They were very in depth, friendly, and adaptive to everyone walking in. Based on the reviews below, I found that if anyone came in pain, they moved them to the front of the line. Someone walked in and was able to be seen today, and was asked several times if he was in pain, which he claimed he was not. They explained the billing, and then how they can offer dental services as an out of network provider. We switched dentist as well to them from Andersonville Dental and they were able to get a teeth cleaning in this morning through all of this! They new technology for finding cavities and to focus cleanings better. I appreciate their kind staff, the office manager was great, and great experience! Actually looking forward to my cleaning!
7/18- Georgia is THE BEST dentist you could EVER find. I have gone back several times and she does an amazing job. Extremely personable, and goes above and beyond!!! The Best!!!
First Family Dental has many benefits such as friendly front desk personnel and TV's in the exam rooms, however, the dentist that I had there was not so friendly. I had a very negative experience. Being quite fearful and anxious over any dental work, even a cleaning, I need a dentist who will be friendly, caring, and as gentle as possible. My dentist not only talked over me to the hygenist about her personal life, but the two complained about the working environment while I was sitting there in pain with my mouth wide open. I felt it was very unprofessional. Also, the dentist that I saw did not explain what was happening at any time. If the dentist took the time to explain what was happening and a little more about the procedure being done, it may have been a better overall experience. Overall, I would not recommend this practice.
This place is fabulous ... the front desk staff is courteous and helpful, the Doctor (Dr. Velano) was superb, the Assistant (Jasmin) amazing. It was my first experience there and it was fantastic. It is stylish in the front, clean in the back, the equipment is modern, the rooms in the back have HDTV!!! ... They made me feel very comfortable and it is exactly what I needed. My questions were answered ... they are the best ... especially for someone who is terrified from dental experiences ... Highly recommend 1st Family Dental. You will not be dissappointed!!!
one simple word.....
the best
Don't believe the people who say it's the best. That's BS!
I feel like I have an abusive relationship with my dentist. I cannot stand this dental practice, but I'm already on their "friends and family" plan (or whatever they call it), so I've paid an extra $40 for the year, and get a supposed discount because of it. When I told them what horrible experiences I'd had (scheduling 3 other people with the same dentist at the same time, waiting for more than an hour only to be sent away, lost records, misinformed dentists, people who treat you like meat rather than a patient, mean reception, etc. . ..) and asked to have my ex-rays, they told me that I'd have to pay them for the ex-rays, and it couldn't be done right away. If you have not gone to this dentist and gotten sucked in my the pretty waiting room, DONT!! I've left crying more than once. They stink.
From the moment I walked in I was pleased with warm hospitality of the front staff. The doctor and assistants were very patient and sweet, since I am very anxious regarding dental work. Everything was explained to me before it was done, and it was done gently. The front staff took extra effort to help me finance my treatment that my insurance did not cover and worked with my schedule to get me in ASAP. Overall I was amazed by professionalism of this office, and would highly recommend to my friends.
The service is OK but don't be fooled. I went for a final appointment before I resigned from my job to return to graduate school full-time. I informed the staff and the doctor that they could only do work covered by my insurance as my budget was really tight, considering my return to school. Everyone agreed that they would not exceed the $1000 limit. I also changed my address and number with them as I had just moved. To make a long story short, I recently found out that they sent me to collections for $135 for a bill related to my last visit. I never received any notices of the overpayment and was furious. This has caused Wachovia to hold my school loans, which is significantly effecting me financially! Ironically, I still get notices for them for follow-up visits but never received a bill. Now they wont even give me a promise to pay, so I can send it to the loan office to have them release my funds. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN.
