Review from Lexi F.
El Cajon, CA
I received a gift certificate from my sister to go to this salon. She lives in the area so she thought it would be something fun to do to celebrate our Mother's Day.
I was a little nervous because I've been going to the same hair salon in San Diego for 10 years and I don't usually trust people with my hair (It's been messed up before). The people working at the salon immediately put me at ease. They greeted me with a smile and told me what the best treatment for my hair would be.
I decided to take their advice and had the Brazilian Keratin Treatment done. I had heard about it but I heard both good and bad things. I decided to try it myself and hoped that the end result would be good.
Veka was my stylist and she was wonderful. She explained everything she was going to do before she did it. She told me what results I could expect for my hair type, and was personable throughout the two hour process. Yea, it was hard to sit for 2 hours but usually with things like this you have to have patience. I had done some research online before and looked at some pictures but these results were the best I've seen.
I don't have to do anything to style my hair now, just shower and go. It is so much easier to manage my hair because it was hard to style it with 2 small children running around. I can still look nice without putting a lot of time into getting ready.
I would recommend 1st Ave Salon AND the Brazilian Keratin Treatment to anyone wanting smooth hair without it breaking off or making it look dry. Thank you guys and I will be back for a cut when I'm back in town. -

Let me just say Isabel is the best!!
I have followed Isabel from Silverlake to Arcadia because she always cuts and highlights my hair the way I like it!! I have been going to her for about five years now and will always stay with her no matter where she goes. I moved to Santa Clarita about 6 months ago but will still travel to Arcadia.
As my hair has been getting grayer she knows just the amount of highlighting to put in to keep it looking natural. I always have a great experience and good conversation with Isabel.
Isabel, Thank You for doing such a great job over the years and I would recommend Isabel to anyone! -

I came in last Friday without an appointment, I was in town visiting some of my old friends. We decided to have a spa day and get makeovers. They were slammed and super busy but they still made it work. We were both able to get our hair done and we were happy with the new look. The staff was super nice and welcoming, they were also very professional. I will come back in a couple months when it's time to get my hair cut again. It was worth the drive especially when I get to spend time with my old friends. Oh yea, they use the best products that make my hair feel real soft even after highlights. Thanks 1st Ave Salon for a great 1st time experience!

Let me just say that they are CRAZY EXPENSIVE and the whole Living Social and Groupon crap they sell you is a waste of money. Don't even go to this place...They messed up my hair and they don't even know how to color your hair and they even charged me more. These people only thing on there mind is money...no passion of knowledge of hair.

I had a groupon and scheduled an appt for 12pm, there was a mix up in my appt but Jules took really good care of me. She gave me good suggestions and explained what she was doing with my hair. I highly recommend Jules i was very pleased with my haircut.

They did my hair great.. i actually have no other complaints about this place except for the cost with the Groupon.. plus 45 for a trim is a little excessive when you dont have a lot of hair.
This business is making up for the cost of the Groupons with additional charges that are not on their menu of services.
this is unacceptable.
cut: 45
color: 65
toner: 65
= 175
groupon total: 120
owed salon: 55
groupon cost: 60
groupon cost + salon charge = 115
i have never been charged for toner on my hair - ever. it is part of the color process.
here is their menu with zero mention:

when it comes down to it, i cannot give them more of a star rating with a hidden cost. -
Review from Liz H.
Glendale, CA
Just got a haircut and style with Amica. I had a Groupon for a $45 haircut, not sure the actual price of their haircuts.
The entire experience was bad. From the rough shampoo and brushing to a choppy haircut, I'm surprised she even has a liscense. She seemed very inexperienced since she didn't check that the cut was even without me asking. At one point I had to tell her to stop cutting. Her technique was all bad, I would expect the same service at Supercuts or some other discount hair salon.
The end result was fine, albeit MUCH shorter than I wanted, apparently a 1/2 inch trim really means a 4 inch chop! But the entire process had me clenching my fists and very upset.
I won't be back.
PS anyone else notice all of the rave reviews on Citysearch? Groupon totally fooled me with those. -

I had a hair color and cut at this salon. I called in advance and asked how much they charge for long and thick hair (my hair is actually medium length and medium thickness) and they told me $85 at most. They said they use Aveda and L'Oreal brands, and they give complementary hair conditioning treatment as well.
When I came to the salon, I was disappointed in that they only had very few color swatches to choose from. I was not able to find my perfect shade, and went with the L'Oreal color I was suggested. The color was nothing spectacular. They did no conditioning treatment. And they charged me $120.
I am disappointed, and don't plan on coming here again. -

I bought a Groupon for this salon- $60 for $120 worth of services. After getting off to a bumpy start (very difficult to make an appt... I had to call back several times to confirm a time because whoever was answering the phone was never near "the book" and then forgot to call me back) I walked into the salon this weekend and thought it was really nice. Everyone is very personable and friendly. My hair looks good and it didn't take hours and hours--- which often happens to me because I have my hair bleached.
However, I was disappointed in the price. I was charged $45 for cut, $85 for bleach and then a mysterious $65 for color....??? I've had a bleached blonde pixie for a very long time and have never been charged for color and bleach... especially for a whooping grand total of $150. (keep in mind my hair is about 2 inches long!) The stylist explained why she needed to charge me for that and I nodded my head, paid the additional amount and left a good tip. BUT, I personally think the additional $65 was the salon's way of making up for the groupon because I basically ended up paying exactly what I would have without the online coupon.
Overall-- good service but won't be back. Too pricey in this economy and having a 50 percent off coupon didn't seem to help! -
Review from Annie V.
Rosemead, CA
I had the worst experience ever at this salon with one of the stylist.
Cons:
1. Damaged my hair and now it looks like crispy burnt hair
2. Left hair dye all over my face
3. Ridiculous bang cut that the stylist offered me a bobby pin to hide it and I specifically only wanted a trim but she cut a couple inches of hair off.
4. Tried to over charge me
I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO SALON TO ANYONE. -

Arcadia, CA
Had a coupon for this place. 50% off any haircut.
I walked from my school to this salon. It is not far, but finding it was a small challenge. Though I am generally knowledgeable of 1st Avenue and its surroundings, this tiny little salon always eluded my eyes. Finally I found it, wedged and obscured.
I brought pictures but my stylist easily dismissed them. She went on cutting and hardly layered my hair. The worst parts were the awkward questions she asked, trying to initiate conversations with me. In the end, she curled my front strands for an embarrassingly outmoded look. -

Frances is a great stylist! I always go to her for coloring or when I need my color washed out (I tend to dye my hair black for the winter and want light brown hair with highlights in the summer). If you have black hair and need to wash it off to put on a lighter color, then go to Frances. She will take care of you. The place is very clean and the people are polite. Great service and yes it is a bit pricey, but u really get what u pay for. I been going to Frances for years. If u're a frugal person and expect to pay $20 for a cut or $50 for coloring and styling, don't bother. Just saying...

I was pretty happy with this salon until my Mother won a drawing of theirs for a free facial. She called to inquire about it and since it had been a month the salon did not want to honor it. A month seems like a short time to expect someone to come in especially with a busy life. No expiration date was noted.

Ask for IRMA CASTRO! She's awesome! My husband and I have been going to Irma for 10 years now and wouldn't go to anyone else. Our whole family goes to her now too! She is amazing with our three boys, she's done every cut they've ever gotten!!!... (even our youngest, who is more than a handful @ 6 years old!...she's a SAINT...trust me!!!) and also with my Mom. They REALLY love her. I ALWAYS get compliments on my hair. I've changed my hairstyle several times and she always has good advice on what would look good for me. She is also just about the greatest friend you can find! She has a heart of gold!! I just wish I had her at home to make me look GOOD ALL THE TIME!! :)
I have the most relaxing and best time at my appointments! It's so nice to just hang out with her and to come out looking just great!! To make an appointment with Irma, just call .........(626)375 2808, she's fantastic at fitting you in even when she's busy! Give her a try, you'll look SO GOOD!!! :) -

I only started coming here to follow my super awesome hair stylist that I can't live without....Isabel! WOW!!! I am so glad she moved here. This place is as awesome as she is. Everything about this salon is clean, trendy, professional and it smells pretty too. As always she makes me feel at home no matter where she goes. The best thing about this place is that they have a parking lot! YAY!!! That reminds me I need to stop by this Saturday to get my hair done. I'll have to snap a shot and post it. Till then....

Called the salon to speak to the owner to see if I could get my hair fixed. The owner was happy to have me come in and see what she could do for me. The same lady who did my hair originally did my hair again and it came out so much better. Guess it was all miscommunication. They said to expect my hair to look better over time as the toner starts to fade..so we'll see about that. I must say tho they are a little rough on my hair (i.e. pulling too hard) another lady washed and blow dried me and she was a little rough..a little tenderness would be appreciated. I will update with my end results in a few weeks

Review from Michaela H.
South Pasadena, CA
Had a Living Social offer $69 for color, mask, cut and blow dry. A great deal vs usual $190 so thought I'd give it a try. Bit of a bumpy start, my 9.00 am Sat appointment ended up being nearer 10am as they overbooked or were short staffed. Not sure which but just as I started to get concerned a lovely friendly stylist named Amy took me under her wing. At one point she seemed to be the only person taking care of three clients as we all sat with colors on and she rotated rinsing us off. She was great, very chatty but professional. She took the time to listen to what I wanted and I came away with a rich, shiny color and perfect cut. I even received my first ever hair compliment today! Would I recommend this salon? For an appointment with Amy - absolutely. Any another stylist - no. The salon itself was a bit tired round the edges and all the other staff seemed bored and unwelcoming. I wasn't charged for any hidden extras and happily tipped on the full price rather than coupon value.

I have personally followed Irma Castro for years. And I can tell you this: SHE is the real deal. She listens to what you want in color or a style and she is the first to constructively add helpful hints as to what products to use and how correctly to use them. Cookies have always been a treat here but more importantly, Irma is a pro. She's an EXCELLENT listener. I have had many compliments on my weaves and it doesn't get better than Irma. PLEASE make an appointment with her today.626-375-2808 Thx!

I have been struggling to find a good, attentive stylist for years now. Decided to give First Ave. a try. It was a mistake. No customer service. In fact, I felt like I was an intruder. The gal took 2 cell phone calls while I was in the chair. And the hair cut was the worst I have ever gotten! I am still trying to "fix" it before looking for another stylist.
