NOOOOOOOOO! Just went here to enjoy the best Chinese on the North Side and they are CLOSED. Turns out they have moved out of this location, called the phone number message said they will open new location in April across from Lane Tech High School @ Lane Plaza. Until then, I will be going thru withdrawal. I can't wait to see their new place, but I hope the food quality and portions remain the same @ the same prices.

This place closed, then re-opened this week at its new location in the strip mall across from Lane Tech, off of Addison. They texted us (they took our number down a while back when they told us they were closing and told us they would let us know when they re-opened).
Did the food get worse when the restaurant moved? It's the same people, same sign, same menu, but the food was not as good. What gives?
To start, my chicken with broccoli meal came with chicken fried rice as its standard, not the shrimp fried rice I was given before. One strike.
The food this time felt heavier too, like, much more greasy than it was last time, especially the fried rice. Strike two.
Finally, there was an advertised sale of 10% off for their grand opening. It's a huge sign in their window. We didn't get a discount. Strike 3.
Perhaps I'll give this place another try, but I was disappointed.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have ordered at this takeout a few times.
Every so often I get a craving for Chop Suey type take out. I am not sure if all the items on the menu are good, but I have been very happy with the items that I have ordered.
Lobster Egg Foo Young. Amazing. Chunks of lobster, at $8.95 for 4 patties...a steal.
Orange chicken...Delicious. Broccoli was a bit overcooked...but I viewed it more as decoration than edible.
Singapore noodles...loved them. -

Have they changed hands in the past year? What was once some of the best takeout chinese majorly disappointed me the last time I was there. Now I see they have moved? Hmmm. I'll give them another chance at the new storefront.

Whenever I try out a new Chinese restaurant, I like to test them out by ordering Mongolian Beef. It's a risk I take, because Mongolian dishes are either super tasty or really bad. I am happy to announce that #1 Chop Suey knows how to make Mongolian Beef!!!! Tender beef and onions soaking in dark brown, medium spicy, slightly sweet and smokey sauce. In my opinion, a good Mongolian dish should be super saucey (i.e. less cornstarch), which makes for better penetration into the puffy rice noodles that should be served with it. Again, #1 Chop Suey delivered. Only qualm I have is that they use a bit too much oil.
Another item worthy of mention is their Shredded Chicken with Peppers. I was initially disappointed that the chicken is actually NOT 'shredded' as the name implies. But one taste and all my disappointment was forgotten. This is a colorful creation of pounded white meat chicken chunks, large green and red bell pepper pieces, julienned carrots, woodear mushrooms and slivered onions cooked to perfection and coated in a medium brown spicy, sweet and sour sauce.
The Singapore Chow Fun is average -- a mildly spiced generic yellow curry with super thin vemicelli like rice noodles that have been overcooked and mixed with scrambled egg, loads of baby shrimp and a meager amount of slivered bbq pork. Baby shrimp don't do much for me in the flavor department, so I would have preferred fewer shrimp and more pork.
The crab rangoon are made with a boring filling -- their cream cheese mixture is neither onionly nor sweet. But even more disappointing than the under seasoned cream cheese filling was that they were fried in dirty oil. I would hope this isn't customary at #1 Chop Suey. Hopefully I just happened to catch them at a time when they were overdue for an oil change.
Customer service is good. I had a problem with my order that was gracefully resolved by a member of their management team who seemed geniunely concerned about my satisfaction. I'll be back :) -

I've been a regular here for years. (Where did that REALLY cute girl that worked there a few years ago disappear to?! I had the biggest crush on her.)
Even when there are other Chinese take-out places closer to me, I'll go make the drive to this place. The food is great and won't hurt your wallet. Stay away from the chicken wings, I think they cook them with crack, cuz they are addicting. Every time I go here, I always have buy an order of chicken wings. And the fried rice is better than other take-outs I've had.
Nice place to go to satisfy your craving for Chinese take-out on the cheap. But don't try to eat there. They have only a handful of tables that seem to be always full. And in the winter, you'll freeze yo azz off, too. -

This joint has enough MSG to kill a horse. Not that I mind. I usually grab this grub when I am really hung-over and am in need of some fatastic food. The Orange chicken with pork fried rice is great. They even toss some broccoli in there to give you a hint of health in your life. Best part about this place is the price for delivery....mega cheap!
If you love fatty MSG filled food; give this place a shot. -

My first review of this place probably would have been 3 or even 4 stars. The more I eat at #1 Chop Suey, the more I realize why I shouldn't.
The food is pretty straight-forward, greasy Chinese take out. The portions are unbelieveably huge and always last for at least two meals.
We were excited to find easy, cheap takeout right down the street from us, and were happy that we'd found a simple lomein that we could eat straight from the container the next day. The combo meals come with a crazy amount of fried rice and an egg roll. This could easily be split between two people.
I started to notice that the next couple times we ate there, I had big stomachaches that night and the next day. I don't think it was food poisoning, just the incredible amounts of grease and fat they put into everything. Something about the food just doesn't sit well with me.
We haven't been back for awhile and I don't see a return trip too soon in the future if at all.Listed in: Village Person, Call me Roscoe

Hangover Heaven. That's what #1 Chop Suey is in my book.
My friends complain they can't find good Chinese places in Chicago. I found this one close to home and it covers all the essentials.
Great sesame chix, fantastic egg rolls, a variety of great chow and lo miens for all your hangover needs.
My personal go to dish is the Singapore Chow Fun.
That's a whole lotta egg noodles, pork, shrimp, and veggies. That paired w/ a couple egg rolls goes a long way. I always walk away w/ leftovers as well.
Sidenote: I usually order here, then walk over to blockbuster for the movie they will undoubtedly not have in stock. By the time my tantrum is over, I head back to pick up my deliciousness! -

I like to start my reviews by stating that I ran against more than 1,200 Managers from many different area hotel chains for the Manager of the Year Award - Regional (Chicago) and State (IL) by the IL Dept. of Hotels and Lodging. I won both of those awards, so believe me when I say I know good service or lack thereof when i see it.
No abience, with only a few tables. In the winter you will freeze yr a_s off if you try to eat inside because there is only one door, thus the kitchen sucks in all the cold air whenever the door opens. Delivery is very reliable! I love the beef and brocolli. I have been eating there for years on and off but my last visit I was rather disappointed with the mushroom soup, it was rather tasteless. I will still give them another shot. I am also a fan of thier hot and sour soup! -

This is my favorite chinese restaurant to order from. In fact it has become the ONLY Chinese place I order from. I happy it's not too far from me.
Their egg rolls? Crispy and delicious.
Their rice? Yum! I never add soy sauce, the flavor is just too good to mask.
Their chicken and brocolli? Loads of chicken and loads of brocolli!
Their sesame seed chicken? So so good! Sweet, and hot (not spicy).
Sweet and Sour chicken? I'm weird I don't like the sauce but I love the chicken by itself; plain and simple!!!!!! Gosh!!!!! -

Their food is nice n greasy, the rice is never dry, and their orange chicken is quite possibly the best I have ever had. They did give me the wrong order once which was a pain in the ass

Located in a strip mall on Western Avenue among Blockbuster, Toys R Us, Dominiks, a Washington Mutual and Payless Shoesource, this Chinese restaurant is an absolute gem of Chinese restaurants.
We popped in one day before our weekly grocery shopping adventure and were pleasantly surprised with what we got. After wrangling with the counter girl to make sure my rice was VEGETABLE fried rice (not shrimp fried rice, which is the standard in their special combo meals), we sat down to probably THE best Chinese food (in the fast realm, not more formal sit-down style) we've had in a long, long time. I can recommend the Kung Pao and General Tsao's chickens, as well as the orange chicken, which is my boyfriend's favorite. The portions are large enough that you can manage with *one* meal for two people, no kidding. We recommend the combo meals, as they're about $6 and feed a couple, or one with plenty of leftovers. There's the main course, fried rice and egg roll in all the combos.
The service is delish and they also deliver. Delegating your order over the phone can be quite the ordeal, but believe me, it's definitely worth it. There's a few booths in the small space, so if you're not in a hurry, you can always grab a seat. The food is always hot, fresh and cooked to perfection in the way inexpensive, strip-mall Chinese food should be!
Happy eating! -
Review from Lesley A.
Who knew a hole-in-the wall Chinese restaurant by a high school with this moniker would make such hearty fried rice and egg foo young for so cheap?
#1 Chop Suey makes the richest (and probably unhealthiest) fried rice I know. It's great on its own and loaded with whatever meat you order with it. It also lasts for days.
Their soups, by the liter, are also good. Their egg foo yong is also rich and each one is about the size of a doughnut.
I suggest ordering take out or delivery from this place. Five minutes alone and waiting for food inside the restaurant will cause your clothes to smell like their cooking oil. -

Wide eyes tearing up.
I can understand someone thinking twice about even considering to open the door to this joint.
It is located in a plaza near a Toys-R-Us, Gamestop, Blockbuster, Radio Shack, and Dominicks. Basically, you could live in this plaza and never have any reason to leave. Which is what I do. I live in this plaza. In the parking lot. I have constructed a dwelling, of sorts, made entirely out of shopping carts, used chop sticks, and gypsy tears. Stop on by if you see my hut. I can often be found scaring small children or washing peoples' already clean car windows.
Since I live so close (40 feet) from this restaurant, I eat here at least once a week.
The decor is nonexistent. And why not? It is a take out Chinese restaurant! They focus on what is important for a take out place-the product. What is good here? The egg rolls are good, but not so good that I would say that they are likely made fresh.
I believe that the best items on the menu are found under 'Chef's Special'. What I have had at this restaurant that warrants them 4 stars (and is better than most other Chinese take-outs I have frequented): The Ma Po Tofu, Empress Chicken, Moo Shu Pork, and the Chicken Subgum.
I did not like the Mongolian Beef.
Also, on the take out menus (which you can pick up as many as you desire at the restaurant) there are coupons for free egg rolls or soda if you spend more than (I think) $15.00.
Upon further reflection I realize that this is a rambling and downright stupid review, but I proclaim that bloody mary's and bud light for brunch will do that to a man. -

I've been a customer since my days at Lane...
For years, I thought this was as good as it could get (compared to all other Chinese places in the immediate area). Even today, I believe it's the best option in a two mile radius.
So why the three stars? I grew up, I bought a car and I traveled outside of my neighborhood. I've tried Chinese food that has blown my mind and changed my taste buds forever! . It's a curse, really. Whenever my mom wants to order from here, I know I'll have to force myself to eat it. I don't have the same enthusiasm I used to have. I still order the same thing---beef with broccoli.
It's small, in the winter it's SUPER COLD.. and in the summer, it's SUPER HOT. The tables were always greasy in the past, staff wasn't always friendly but I still love their fortune cookies. Delivery is fast and a much better option than eating here. -

A lot of food for your money. You are best off getting a combo meal for $5-6 rather than each option a la carte. The chop suey is excellent, fried rice is okay. Crab rangoon and egg rolls are perfect. The service is a little slow, especially during lunch time.

I used to go to school down the street from here, and I would go there and eat for lunch. After graduating I don't come here as much but when I do, never seem to be disappointed in their food. Personaly I like this place better than tasty house. Probably the best chinese fast food I'd tried. Cheap good food is hard to come by. If you having try this place, add it to your to-do list.

You know you're in trouble when the fried wontons that come with the soup soak through the wax paper bag.
Salty, oily, greasy, salty, and downright addictive. I wouldn't call the food particularly great or even comparable with any place in the area...but there's something about the flavors that keep it as part of my rotation.
Note: it's a mostly takeout place do don't expect to show up expecting a cozy dining experience.
Meals here never leave me feeling good, but if I'm looking for a fix of Americanized Chinese food, this is the place. The Egg Foo Yung gravy has a sweetness I can't find anywhere else, and their Fried Rice is tasty. I can't say I've tried many of their other dishes because I treat this mostly as an appetizer/fried rice only place.
If #1 Chop Suey were open between midnight and four, I'd be their "#1" customer! -

The food here is nothing special. Since it's so close to my house, I've eaten here many times. I keep trying to find that "dish". The one they do right. I can't quite figure out which one it is.
From low mein to General Tso's Chicken, they meals are just so-so, but I will say they make some killer pot stickers.
If you're looking for a cheap priced dinner, give 'em a call. I'm sure I will again. -

they give you lots of food but very bland and no matter what you order, the sauce is the same flavor; the fried rice has almost NOTHING but rice; the entrees are way inconsistant on what IS in there (like you might get one dish that has 2 mushrooms, 3 water chestnuts (MOST will have a LOAD of onion & green pepper) ; Only positive? they do give lots of food. But it's not great food. It's kind of like OH I am starving so will eat anything type of food. And on high note? any beef/chicken dish I've ordered has been tender.

Fantastic Chinese food! The kung pao chicken had a great flavor to it, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find egg rolls with a better flavor anywhere else, even in Chinatown. The pot stickers are large, a bit doughy but overall a good flavor (although my fiancee did say the pork didn't taste right). The Mongolian beef was about par, nothing to write home about, but I've had much worse. Unfortunately we had to pick this up, they don't deliver to us, but for those in their delivery zone, give them a try, they are one of the top Chinese places I've found so far.

This place gets 4 stars despite giving us the completely wrong food (good thing we were thinking about ordering shrimp fried rice anyway). The eggrolls were delicious (always a good sign) and the food was flavorful and not nearly as greasy as most Chinese. Also my roommate got the single best fortune in her cookie I've ever seen, "an interesting medical opportunity is in your new future."

Being of Chinese decent I am relatively picky on my Chinese food, but this place was pretty typical (in a good way) of getting large portions for less cash! I ordered combination fried rice and spicy orange chicken. I was happy with it and I'll definitely order again.

This place has history for me, being a former Lane Tech student this was the place to go if you were broke. At lunch time, two students could split one of their specials and be full. Now that's value. The three main things I always get are the Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, and fried chicken wings It's not mind blowing good but you'll be surprised how much better it is than most Chinese joints in the area. I would rate it higher than 3 stars if the place wasn't the size of a men's bathroom...and looked like one. The eating area is usually dirty but I haven't graced their tables since my days at Lane. Now I just phone it in and carry-out.

I had eaten at this place a couple of times before my horrible experience last night. Overall I thought the food was ok. Very cheap and huge portions. I ordered the Shrimp w/Lobster Sauce yesterday for lunch and while the food tasted good, I received the worst FOOD POISONING I have ever experienced. We are talking 8-10 hours of vomiting and fever. To the advice of my Dr., I called the fine folks at #1 Chop Suey just to let them know of the issue. At first they seemed to doubt my story until I let them know I didn't want compensation, I just wanted to let them know. The Manager offered me a free meal next time I come in. I felt obligated to let him know that I would NEVER eat at his establishment again. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

It's the dream scenario: a Chinese restaurant close to home featuring good food and the big portions at rock bottom prices all day long. #1 Chop Suey lives up to its name. My favorite here is the kung pao chicken combo, which comes chopped into the smaller pieces of meat. You get one egroll and a mess of shrimp fried rice in the box. The fried rice here is excellent; not mushy and nicely done with sprouts and scallions. It reheats very well. The whole thing costs six bucks. One thing here to watch out for is they seem to add mushrooms to random dishes, so i usually ask for all dishes sans mushrooms.

Stopped in this place for a quick lunch and thought it was pretty good. I just like to say my reviews of Chinese food is 100% based off of their General Tso as that's the only thing I eat there. I got the lunch special which came with shrimps fried rice (I defaulted to plain white), an egg roll, broccoli and a ton of chicken for about 6 bucks. The sauce was thick and sweet, and after awhile had a good amount of compound heat. As of now this is my choice place for the General

I liked this place. I only gave 3 stars, because it is not a gourmet restaurant. It is good for what it is; and it is a cheap, hole-in-the-wall restaurant. I don't eat Chinese food much, because it is so heavy and unsettling. But there are times, particularly on lazy sundays, when that is exactly what I want. So I ordered hot and sour soup and jumbo shrimp fried rice. Both were very good. And it is important to be weary with cheaper restaurants, because a lot of the time, it means that the quality is subpar. For example, when I would order from the cheap Chinese restaurant I lived near years ago, I'd always find some random object in my food (i.e. a piece of plastic, or one time, metal!). Why did I keep going there? I was poor and in college. Judge me.

i LOVE this place. Yes, i know it's not authentic, 5-star, gourmet with great customer service food but hello! we don't have to be rocket scientists to expect it. I have been a fan since i was a student at Lane and am very happy to know it's still there and happy to deliver wherever I move to. The prices are great, the portions are good and I have not ran into any other take out place that offers their lunch specials ANY time of day. To this day it's the only place i order from if I don't feel like taking a drive to Chinatown to get lost.
