This is where I go for gas. It's a cheaper Shell than a lot of others, and it isn't too far from home. It isn't one of those stations that are "along the way" to wherever I happen to be going. It's my destination. I hop in the car and head right to it.

Dragon Lounge, Seniore's, Island Cafe, Hanoi Bistro, S&E Cafe? Secondary. In other words, I was going to get gas and decided to swing by those other places just because I was in the neighborhood.

We usually go to the service center on 19th and kirkham for a smog test but this year I was told i needed a "test only" and remembered that this site offers that service. We drove up, granted on a saturday, and it was busy. We pulled up closer to the garage and a guy walked out. My husband asked how much and the answer was "$60 and your going to wait an hour" and he stormed off. His tone. His demeanor. Everything was just all wrong.

We would have waited if A. he wasnt trying to rip us off by $10 (we called around) and B. if he wasnt the rudest person on the planet.

A customer service skills seminar wouldnt kill this fella!

So I filled up here a couple of months ago since has almost no gas left in my tank and it was the last stop 19th southbound where I could just hop in and out.  I had a very weird experience here.

I had a hard time working the machine.  There are two awkwardly placed screens, one that you need to operate the pump, and another that barks up-to-the-minute news.  It's like a TV, and it's kind of distracting.

So by the time I got the pump to work, I was already late to work.  And after the pump stopped, it literally jumped out of my car and spilled gas all over my jeans.  I smelled like gasoline all day.

I know you must be thinking, "What the hell, this guy doesn't even know how to pump gas."

    Congratulations, you're right!

It looks like there is a duplicate entry/listing on Yelp for this exact Smog Testing location... anyway, I copy-pasted my review, since this is essentially the same place and I want to make sure that my experience is reflected here in this listing too.

    -------
Brought my folk's 2001 Honda CRV in for a smog check about a month or so ago... (like around May or June 2011).  It was a cold morning when my mom and I visited this location.

Ricky (or Rickey) was the technician that administered the test on our vehicle.  He was very upbeat, friendly, professional, efficient, and FAST!  He really knows the meaning of customer service, as he went out of his way to pull out a portable heater unit from their office to keep my mom warm and comfortable as he worked on our car.  (The waiting area is little more than a row of chairs in the open garage, exposed to the wind outside... which can be rather cold).

Our vehicle passed the smog test, Ricky took care of transmitting the DMV paperwork, and we were on our way!

My only gripe is that they aren't open on Sundays.

I only come to this gas station cuz they got decent prices compared to anywhere else on 19th ave. oh yeah, one of the pumps has popped out of my gas tank a few times where it got gas all over my tire, wheel, and part of my fender.

The gas station is cool, but the garage sucks big time.
The garage here is separate from the gas station.

The owner here is a real dick.
The employees here are also dicks.
They are incredibly rude and talk very badly to customers including profanity laced tirades to customers.

If you wanted to be treated like crap use this garage.
If you want to be a treated like a valued customer, go somewhere else.

This place is awesome. They are fast and very professional. They cut me a break with the price when they found out I found this place on Yelp! I was looking for a quick smog check and they asked me how I heard about them, I said Yelp! And they gave me 20$ off the original price just bc of that! Pretty cool!

Suckiest gas station ever. Suckiest isn't a word? Whatever.

This place has such a plethora of technical issues. If you think that a wrench in your gears when you have somewhere to be is exciting, then this is your place. Computer glitches, non-working pumps, pumps that only have one certain type of gas at a time..you name it.

Also, if you enjoy unwelcome advertising bombarding you like your favorite dystopian novel, then you'll love the NBC-sponsored tv screens. The future is now, and it's obnoxious.

Excellent. I went there for a smog test, referred there by the Shell on 19th & Lincoln cuz their testing machine was broken, went down and got my car checked in less than 1/2 hour.. Howard honored the Yelp discount (given by the 19th & Lincoln shell)... only cost me 49.45... A+

Came in for the smog test only work on a Saturday morning at 9 AM and they told me that it would be at least an hour.  I came back at 10 AM and they were right - no one was waiting and it was complete in 20 minutes!  Had the Value Pak $20 off coupon.  The smog test is separate from the Shell Gas Station.

This is a pretty good place to come for your car's smog test.  I didn't call for an appointment & popped in to see if they could check on a spur of the moment & they did.  The mechanic is pretty nice & if you're a regular, he might give you a discount on the price.  They got it done fairly quickly.

This was a convenient  place for my car's smog test, being that I am only down the block.  I didn't bother to make an appointment and just went over there before lunch. Howard the mechanic hooked me up. He got my car in and out in less than half an hour and not at a inflated price.

Fast, friendly and not expensive!  How can you go wrong?  I went here on a Saturday morning to get a smog check.  The guy was super friendly, and I was out of there in 20 minutes.  They sent in my smog check to the DMV, and gave me a discount for the service.  20 minute smog check for less than $60?  Yes please.

Being that my vehicle hit 10 years, I needed to take it to a "Test Only" site to get smogged.  The owner Henry Le is efficient & multi-tasks in a manner I've never seen.  As a one man operation, he lined up all the cars to be smogged and tested them each within less than 15 minutes.  While I waited & on-viewed his work, all the cars passed the test.  The waiting area was furnished with a credenza, magazines, & chairs - smart customer service.  The service was so fast, there was hardly a wait.  Ask for the discounted coupon rate.

Im sure this place has gasoline to sell but they make it really hard for people to buy it.
I have been to this gas station 3 times; and every time I go, either the pump will not take credit cards and it tells you to go to the cashier...but the cashier is not even at the register and there was a long line of people waiting for him.
Another time, I went there and more than half the pumps were "out of order".
The last time I went there, the pumps accepted my credit card (finally) but then the pumps would not allow you to select the grade of fuel. "What the heck is going on here?"
To save me the trouble, I just go down the street to any of the many other stations and have no compaints or troubles; except pricing  ;)

Yesterday I drove to the Shell Gas station at 19th Avenue & Taraval to purchase gas.  A full tank of gas.  I entered the store and asked the attendant to charge my debit card.  He asked me why I didn't use the credit card station at the pump and I told him I didn't want to risk getting my card information skimmed.  He seemed annoyed that my being there caused an interruption to his reading.  He asked me for my I.D. and I promply produced my driver's license.  He held onto my card and upon returning my driver's license, he let me know the pump station was now ready for use.  I purchased just over $40 worth of gas to fill the tank.  Upon my return, he produced a reciept for the amount purchased and gave me back my credit card.  Off I went for my drive.  This afternoon I checked the balance on my bank statement and noticed $100 had been debited for the gas I paid at the Shell station at 19th & Taraval.  I immediately called my bank to alert them of a possible fraud purchase.  The customer service representative said it was common practice for gas stations to charge as little as $1 or as much as $100 to ensure funds are available for purchases made using a debit card.
Apparantly this is a common practice and I was equally shocked to learn that banks and merchants (like Shell Gas Station) allow the use of this practice.  The customer service representative assured me that in 24hrs time, the correct amount will be reflected and my money returned to my account and that I "should not have anything to worry about."  What the heck?
Since when is it legal for merchants to take your money for products that i did not agree to purchase and further, was never delivered to me?  There's something wrong here.
The gas station attendant did not appear to know how to process my purchase was annoyed that his reading time was interrupted because of my purchasing gas.
Lesson learned:  I will never purchase gas from Shell Gas Station at 19th & Taraval and I will disuade anyone and everyone I know from patronizing this gas station.  I will be checking my bank statement again in the morning.

I called this station because all Shell stations are offering a discount ski ticket at Northstar if you but 10 gallons or more. The woman who answered the phone had no interest in helping me. I tried to explain that they should have vouchers and she hung up on me. Then I called back and she immediately hung up on me. I tried 10 minutes later and got the message "memory is full" so I guess they never listen to their messages either. This in NOT a service station. It's a NON-SERVICE station. Read other posts and you'll see these people are very rude. Buy your gas elsewhere.

This is the world's worst gas station EVER. I live right down the block and this is absolutely my last resort for getting gas. I would say at least ten times I have gone there they have been out of gas. TEN TIMES!!! They still keep all of the lights on and give no indication of being out of gas in their entire station so car after car has to pull in, unscrew their cap, put their debit and then after all that figure out they don't have any gas. You think they would put out a sign, or turn off their lights or something. Another ten or so times I have been here I always have problems using my debit card, its not just mine either as there is usually a line of people waiting to use their card inside or having to move to a different pump. Again, they put no indication that it is out of order even after you complain. I have had several rude interactions with the employees as well when I go in and ask them what the problem is and why I can't pump gas. They have actually yelled at me and one guy even accused me of scamming him for gas! WTF?! I hate it here, they suck really bad and they are mean.
