1924 Main was a great restaurant, but it closed permanently in Feb of 2010.

The following review is strictly for their bar and their happy hour. I've never dined there, though frankly after this experience i'm rather apathetic towards the idea.

The good: excellent cocktails for only $5.00. They have the pendegrast, which is my favorite drink of all time. This alone will ensure that i'll be back for happy hour at 1924 Main. They also have a couple of wines by the glass, also for $5.00

Some of the food we had was excellent. We REALLY enjoyed the smoked olives, and the deviled eggs were tasty. The fried hominy was interesting. I enjoyed it, but a little goes a long way.

The bad: Our server, who was also the bartender. He seemed to be overwhelmed, and he only had us as well as three guys at the bar. He was a nice guy, so maybe it was just an off day. Forgot to ring in our beef tartar, though that may have been a blessing, because....

the ugly: the beef tartar is seriously the worst i have ever had. it looked like Fancy Feast with a smoked egg on top (smoked seems to be the theme of 1924 Main, ever since they bought a smoker). We didn't even come close to finishing it, as all 4 of us found it repulsive. The pork toast was pretty bad also, though maybe thats what you get when you order something called pork toast? Fortunately, the server took off the tartar, so we didn't have to pay for it.

I try and not spend a ton of money on going out to dinner anymore, but at the same time i love to try new places and treat myself. So, I really try and make the most out of my dining dollar. One way i gauge a place is to try their happy hour menu first, and see how i feel about it. Based on my experience at 1924 Main, i have no real desire to go there for dinner. But keep on serving those delicious cocktails, and i'll be back for happy hour, for sure.

    Happy Hour

If you haven't had the chance to stop by 1924 Main's bar to try a drink from their "Classic Cocktail" list, you need to soon folks...
The list has been inspired by the demand for creative, throw-back, but most importantly UNIQUE cocktails. Some we tried...: "Ginger Rickey", with hendrick's gin ~ lime ~ ginger syrup ~ club soda. The "PC Fizz" will feature, "pimm's no. 1 ~ yellow chartreuse ~ lemon ~ egg white.

oh and the fried green beans with a light specialty sauce = an excellent addition-

I checked out 1924 Main today for lunch after my bosses went last week and recommended it.  They've got a great online reservation system that lets you instantly see if you can get a table or not.  That's not unique, I know, but its still helpful.  Didn't end up needing it, as the restaurant was only about half full when I got there around noon.

The prices are pretty high for dinner but their lunch menu is much more reasonable.  The menu is set up into sides, main course and desserts.  For lunch, two courses cost $12 and three is $18.  I had the smoked salmon panini with a roasted duck salad and both were delicious.

The service was decent, not great but no big complaints either.  The decor of the restaurant was not what I expected; its got kind of a slight-Asian theme.

I'll definitely be back again and would like to try it at dinner too.

A boutique chef owned restaurant in KC. It's small, friendly and has  a great menu of 2 or 3 courses for lunch or dinner. They have a chef's counter which is great for the single business traveller and if you are staying downtown, it's a must visit.

    Perfect on cold snowy nights.

Our reservations were on a Tuesday night (we often go out during the week to miss crowds) and we had no wait or issues with crowding. My single complaint comes here, the bar is very packed and was pretty boisterous when we arrived (it did calm down while we were eating), this condition is not unique to 1924 but it is something to consider if you looking for an 'intimate' evening.

    On to the real review.

I enjoy 'coursing' in meals and I enjoy spending time eating, my companion and I like to converse and digest between each course. It is a bit more European were dinner is what we do at night. I will spare you the details of how they present the coursing (read that in the descriptions or something) but i found the selections to be ample (a good number of combination's) and the server helpful in selecting combination's that were good.

Our food was fantastic, top notch. My companion and i sampled each others plates and her's was amazing as well. I found the portions to be filling (I left not wanting for any food) and the price was less than I would expect to pay at other places of the same (or lesser) quality.

We will be going back to 1924, likely on a regular basis.

I went there with a friend from out of town over Christmas; I like to go out for a nice dinner over trying to figure out what size of sweater someone wears.

I've been there twice now and each time has been fantastic. The service was excellent and the always changing prix fixe menu was tempting. I went with scallops with mushrooms and fried leeks, my companion had a ribeye steak. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but the mushrooms and leeks stole the show for me. The ribeye was very good, but I had never seen it served as a wafer-thin strip of meat instead of the normal enormous slab.

The wine pairings were quite good too, though when adding the wine the final bill begins to be in the most-expensive-meal-I've-ever-had range.

I give this place five stars and I'll do it again, though probably not on a regular basis.

I finally tried this place for dinner on a special occasion.  The food was not as special as I thought it would be.  It is pretty standard and I could get the same meal a lot cheaper and better at other places.

What I did like was the sexy hidden lounge downstairs.  Only a few people were in the lounge...I don't think many people know about this space.  I would come here again just for a drink.

My visit to the downstairs bar at 1924 main was a fun and unique experience.  Below the well-known restaurant at 1924 Main, there is a lounge with comfortable seating, mood lighting and chill relaxing music.

The lounge boasts a full bar and friendly attentive service.  There wasn't a ton of people there, but enough to create a social atmosphere.  I recommend this downstairs lounge if you're looking for a cool change of pace to check out with your friends.

There are so many things I love about this place before we dive into the food review: they change their menu monthly (genius), you can get a two-course for $20 or three course for $25--hell of deal considering it's a local restaurant in downtown KC. Something else I really liked about this place is how small it is...the dining area is small and the menu is small. (That just ensures whatever I order it will be specially prepared for me.)

I ate here when the October menu was available and to my surprise most of the items were very "July-ish" or summery, if you will. Burgers, smoked chicken, smoked pork, and deviled eggs were all options. The deviled eggs were average and the smoked chicken served over their mashed potatoes with smoked brussel sprouts were incredible. I can still taste those sprouts now, perfectly al dente with a smokey aftertaste! (I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that the side vegetable is what left a lasting impression) For dessert I got their cranberry and apple cobbler with homemade biscuit topping. Finally, something that fit into the season and it was really good! My boyfriend got a brown sugar cake topped with pumpkin ice cream and some other Autumn flavors...again, very good.

I really liked this place and I really like the concept that if I wasn't completely satisfied I can always say, "Eh, there's always next month."

Overall I have no complaints. I've been for lunch and dinner.  Looking at the selection and pricing of the dinner menu I think your best bet is to go for lunch.  Currently you can get any two lunch items for $10.  I would highly reccomend both the Pulled Pork Sandwhich and the Black Mussels.  The Fish Tacos I got last time fell short, relying too heavily on filler and not allowing the flavor of the fish to really come through. If it's any consolation this is a chief complaint of mine with many restaurants.

The service has always been great and the atmosphere can't be beat.

I went to 1924 on an ordinary Monday night with a friend. Apparently on Sunday and Monday, the prix fixe menu is cheaper than any other night, 3 courses for $25, $40 with wine pairing. So not something I would ordinarily spend on a dinner that wasn't a special occasion, but I have to say, it was a very nice evening and worth it. I cannot say it was the BEST meal I've ever had, but it was interesting and delicious. We sat at the kitchen bar, which was interesting to be able to watch your food being prepared. The place was practically empty except for maybe one other table and a private party in a seperate room. There was one lone chef, young and friendly enough when you asked him a question. I started with an arugula salad with fried potatoes (I was really excited about the fried potatos, but they were much smaller and not as exciting as I hoped), but the lemony vinaigrette was really yummy. The white wine pairing with it was tasty, though a relatively small pour, maybe 4 oz. My friend had an interesting dish of grits, cabbage and "spinach dumplings" which was good, and unique. For my main course, I had duck over roasted brussel sprouts and a cranberry sauce. The duck was excellent and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the brussel sprouts. The wine pairing was a red, I really can't remember the names of any of my wines, but they were nicely paired. My friend had steak, although it was only about 3 small slices. It was tender and juicy. We split our desserts, beginning with the cheese board. The amount of cheese on the thing seemed sparse, but they were good cheeses along with some kind of cranberry-type concoction, marmalade and some absolutely AMAZING honeycomb. I could eat a bowl of it with a spoon (but then I'd go on a crazy sugar high). Our other dessert was a chocolate apricot bread pudding, which was extremely rich, but nice. My wine was a port. I don't have much experience with port, but it was sweet and delicious and of course, worked well with the cheese.

Although I felt the portions at first appeared small, it was actually the perfect amount of food for me (I finished every last bite of every course, which I  NEVER do) and I left quite full and satisfied. The server, who also seem to be a hostess was cute and friendly and knowledgeable. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. One that I wouldn't do often because it wasn't cheap. But it was reasonable. The small parking lot on the side was helpful too, especially being in downtown.

    Man...I LOVE writing long reviews!

My dinner was 5 stars, but my companion's was not. Excellent if snooty drink menu, and small but filling portions of delicious, creatively designed meals. Heavenly. The menu is available online and prix fixe - you choose one app, one entree and one dessert from a variety of enticing choices. $5 wine glasses and house specialty cocktails are a steal at happy hour, and be sure to try the olive plate and the mixed nuts (toasted and rolled in some amazing curry-powdered sugar-cinnamon mix? Deadly). Venue is beautiful, high-ceilinged with a simple red and black scheme plus Arts and Crafts-style touches, and the music is pleasing and at an inoffensive volume, allowing for table talk. The house ice cream dessert was meh, and though the Mississippi Mud Pie was smashing, the savory items are where it's at.

I haven't been here in a couple of years (never in town too long, have other favorites to hit up) but this is a really cool little restaurant.  Rob Dalzell is a great asset to Kansas City's urban food scene.  This was his first restaurant, and it's his best.  Modern high-end American cuisine is served up in a warm and cozy dining room.  The building it is housed in is a really cute 1900s terracotta building that also houses a penthouse loft on top.  It is pricey, but worth it.  If they still just do the fixed menu thing (not sure if they do) than call ahead and make sure it sounds good.  If not, just try again another day.  Well worth it!

This joint was all the rage a year ago.  For a Friday or Saturday evening, a person had to make a reservation two weeks in advance.  When I called about a reservation, on Friday this week at 4:30, the reply was basically "When would you like to come in?"  At 5:30, admittedly early, we were seated and only one other table was occupied. The decor is tasteful and understated, the waitstaff is exemplary.  Cooking were two or three young men in their twenties, which seemed a little odd to me.  Were they mature and experienced enough to be chefs, I wondered?  The complimentary bread with butter before the meal was O.K..  A person can order up to five modest courses, --the first course is $15, and each additional course is another $10.  So, appetizer, meat dish, and dessert (three courses) would be $35.  For an appetizer, I ordered a dish simliar to bruscetta, with salmon spead on top, which was satisfying, and my wife had a "butter lettuce" salad with sliced apples, which she described as "so-so".  I had the rib-eye steak, which was nothing to write home about (a little tough) and my wife had the halibut, whose sauce was quite (too) sweet.   For dessert, I had caramel cheesecake, which was very good, accompanied by a handful of caramel popcorn, and my wife had cheesecake with blueberry sauce with a scoop of lavender ice cream.  She liked that a lot, although I don't like ice cream that tastes like perfume.  Without wine, the bill was $72, plus tip, which is reasonable.  By 6:30, as we departed, the place was beginning to get busy.   We weren't impressed enough to go back anytime soon.  It seemed a little like the Emporer's new clothes, --isn't anyone going to come out and say that the food in this place just isn't that good?

Succulent foods paired with a 3oz or 5oz pour of wine. Choose from two to five courses. The portions are properly sized too; which has become uncommon here in the USA.

The burger is absolutely the best in town and the two or three course offerings couldn't be more reasonably priced.  We love the unique feel of the building and the creative cocktails.  One of KC's best!
