The cafe(I have not shelled out the $$ for the pricey 1906 restaurant yet) is great food.
Yes, it's expensive - but the kids meals (mac n cheese) are huge - get one for yourself if you like the options.

We love Longwood and have been members for 2 years now (10% off for members - still expensive!).

Anyone who goes to a museum, garden or zoo venue and expects an inexpensive meal from the on-site facilities is, well, a bit delusional.   They have a monopoly, and this is an opportunity for them to increase their funds for operations and such.  In the case of Longwood Gardens, part of the legendary Pierre DuPont Estate, they're not hurting, but hey, every dollar counts, right?

What's remarkable about the Terrace Cafe is that the expensive food is actually pretty darn good, clean and beautiful to boot.

The six of us - four adults, two kids, enjoyed a late lunch on a warm spring day.  Highlights would be the vegetarian chili - really delicious, with just a slight kick of spice - the chicken salad with cranberries and grapes - YUM - and the italian panini.  Salads and breads were remarkably fresh given this is a cafeteria-style operation. Chicken fingers were just OK, with not a lot of grease as was the macaroni and cheese, which was a bit on the bland side but not mushy.  Cookies, while big and showy, were really meh, and were the one true 'soft spot'.

There is a good selection of decidedly un-Aramark-like food there, healthy and delicious.  Yes they have those hot dogs and chicken fingers but they also have food you don't usually see like stir fried vegetables, polenta and handcrafted sandwiches.

If you're looking to eat cheap, this isn't your place.  If, however, you don't mind spending the extra buck (we each ate for about $10), for the type of restaurant this is, it's quite good.

**Please note this review speaks for the cafeteria-style cafe only.  We have not eaten in the 1906 Fine Dining Restaurant.  Seemed to be overkill to attempt that with kids who were very anxious to get back out and play in the gardens.

For as many times as I visited Longwood Gardens, it wasn't until my last visit that I finally ate at this wonderful restaurant.  It was a really excellent experience overall.  The service, the ambiance and the food were all wonderful.  It's not ideal if you have small children- thankfully my daughter was well behaved.  The staff were accomodating however.  My favorite part of the meal was the dinner rolls which were baked in clay flower pots.  It was really adorable and very tasty!  Don't miss out on this great dining opportunity.

two and a half, but i'm rounding down to balance the over-raters that came before me.

1906 is one of those places that mistakenly seems to think high prices = class. the restaurant is really nothing special. a $27 crab cake (singular) better wow me. and it didn't.

an alcohol-free brunch for two costs upwards of $60 here. i don't have time for this hoity-toity crap, and neither should you. if you're planning to spend some time at longwood, eat before you come.

We have dinned here several times and it has always been perfect, the service, the food and ambiance.  The view of the Gardens, and this last time the Christmas Lights make this a perfect choice for a special dinner.  My daughter came to visit for Thanksgiving and we decided to go to 1906 for dinner. Starting with the mushroom soup (Kennet Square calls itself the mushroom capital of the world) was excellent, all three of us choose the Flat Iron Steak and they were perfectly cooked, all the side dishes were also prepared perfectly.  Recommend it for any special occasion. Also their cafeteria section serves very nice quick dishes.

This was a delicious little number, located right inside Longwood gardens. Guess what the views were?  You guessed right, flowers, trees and more flowers.

The food is unusually delicious for restaurants on property like this.  I had a mushroom strudel along with some of the best cream of mushroom suop I have ever had, while my hubby had a homemade chicken pot pie that was loaded with tender chicken and fresh veggies all covered with a buttery and flaky crust.  They had a pumpkin filled pasta, that I may try on my next trip around.

Nice wine list, including local wines and you are in mushroom country and they know how to perfect dishes using them.

They also offer The Cafe, where you can pick and choose your own foods, pay for them and then sit down to enjoy.

The outstanding service is what earns this newly remodeled restaurant four stars from me. The food is good, but just like the cafe here, a bit pricey. Case in point: I wasn't in the mood for a $16 omelet so I chose to get an appetizer to tide me over until I made it home.

I ordered the $12 mushroom ravioli dish. Considering it consisted of four raviolis, that's $3 a piece, ouch! I liked the truffle foam, but the raviolis weren't as plump as I thought they would be. I really don't think they were house made.

My mom had the Portabello Mushroom Wrap ($11). That's a much better deal and could easily be shared. It came with a small cup of multigrain salad which was really tasty!

The reason i wanted to eat here was to order the Mushroom strudel that DJ M mentioned. I was so disappointed that they no longer serve it! I made sure I mentioned that on the comment card.

A server came by our table with a complimentary amuse bouche for each of us. It was a small cracker with brie and prosciutto. The bread, served in a small pot was nice. Would I eat here again? When they put the Mushroom Strudel back on the menu, I'd definitely say yes.

The best Sunday brunch I've had to date sums up our experience at 1906.

I started with the Longwood Gardens Mushroom Soup which was very good!   I then had the Eggs Chesapeake and thoroughly enjoyed the dish! Fresh crab, accented by the perfectly cooked egg made we want an additional serving of the dish!   After that bit of heaven, I had the Philly Style Roast Berkshire Pork sandwich.  It was my least favorite of the dishes in the brunch, but it was good and tasty.    A fancy take on cheese steak but I prefer the real thing!

This brunch was the icing on a perfect day roaming through the beautiful grounds at Longwood.

    I would definitely return!

The ambiAnce and view are unsurpassed. We had the tasting menu and the diver scallops were delicious. So fresh and tender and braised perfectly. The Penang short ribs were pretty good but I have had better. The goat cheese cheesecake was a different twist but still very creamy and a great finish. It is $75 a person ad Gomes with dine pairings. Yes t is pricey but where else would you be able to dine in what is arguably one of the loveliest horticultural exhibits in the world?  Service s impeccable. Definitely eat here if you are staying for a  Performance (kiss me Kate anyone?).  It will start your evening off right.

The Terrace Cafe is surprisingly yummy... lots of choices in foods. Anything from a sandwiches to various freshly cook entrees. There are cute little tables out on the terrace where you overlook the lawn and can people watch. Very relaxing atmosphere. The only thing that could make this place better is more reasonable prices. Worth a try if you are looking for a bite to eat in Longwood Gardens!

1906/Terrace was wonderful !  The chef prepared us a marvelous dinner, and the scenery was amazing.  This is a phenomenal location. I loved the menu which contained the very necessary steamed/stuffed mushroom app. and some amazing everything: from soups and steaks.  They do recommend you use opentable to reserve a spot because it is seasonally crowded, and seasonally closed.

On a blustery, cold evening in December my sister and our adult children joined us for a wonderful evening of greenery and festive holiday fun viewing the beautiful Longwood Gardens sites.  My niece managed to score a reservation for dinner at 7:15PM, but after walking  around the grounds and seeing the sites - we were ready to eat much earlier, and warm up our frozen digits!  Upon arrival the hostess let us know that they could move up our reservation but first wanted to show us where we would be seated - for they had added a heated tented dining room to accomodate the holiday crowd.  We thought it was very attentive to give us the option to sit in the tented dining room versus the regular room.  We chose to sit in the tented dining room, no problem!
Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable in regard to the description of each special item and answering our inevitable questions regarding ingredients.  The majority of our group ordered the well known specialty Mushroom soup - I highly recommend this soup, the flavor and freshness was delectable at best! My sister and I both ordered the pork chop dinner which was accompanied with roasted red potatoes and a cranberry chutney and cabbage.  The pork chop was grilled to perfection, as were the sides.  Water glasses were filled with precision and our waiter checked on us in a timely fashion.  My son and his girlfriend had the lobster pot pie, which I can only assume they enjoyed immensely by their oohhhs, and ahhhs as they ate.  My niece is a vegetarian - the menu had several choices to make her happy!
Our choice for desert was coffee, peppermint ice cream (I know), and pumpkin cheese cake, we shared.  The ice cream was incredibly smooth on the tongue and the peppermint did not dominate the taste.  The cheese cake was as good, smooth.
Overall - If you go to Longwood Gardens, make sure you get a reservation at this wonderful restaurant so that you can enjoy their delicious menu.

    I'm between 3 and 4.
I made a reservation for 6pm for Christmas. I had to wait about 20 minutes for another party to clear. I was okay with that since it was Christmas (maybe)...
My server's name was Shane, who was.. less than I expected in terms of attentiveness. He only came around once to make sure we were doing okay, and actually didn't even care to get us water when we asked after the check came around.

The food was.......... mixed, to say it nicely. The bread served on the terra cotta was AMAZING. Buttery, soft, and just amazing. The pumpkin soups we ordered were very well done!! But as for the entree, my boyfriend ordered chicken breast something something, which I tried, and was too salty for my taste. The entree that I ordered, which was the pappardelle pasta, was awful. It was sooo bland, no taste whatsoever, I ate only because I hadn't eaten all day. I'm glad my boyfriend was there to entertain me, because the food certainly could not!!

Overall, the dinner could have ruined my Christmas except it didn't because the Longwood Gardens made up for that... It just could have been better...

Wonderful place to eat an exceptional meal at Longwood Gardens. I have been here twice and both times during the Holiday season when it is cold and the lights are gorgeous in the garden. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very cozy and elegant, they also have an outdoor heated tent that is also very nice but after a while it does get pretty chilly. The service has always been excellent and very friendly. As far as the food goes, it is on the pricey side but well worth every penny! I absolutely adore the mushroom soup with crispy leeks and chives. It's the most amazing creamy decadent perfect soup to warm you up and fill your tummy with joy. Most of the entrees have meat in them and even the seafood entrees have some form of meat in either the sauce or side unfortunately. So I have always had the greens salad with roasted beets, candied walnuts, fennel confit and ricotta salad, which is delicious but not terribly filling. They also start you out with a wonderful roll and salted butter. Everything is truly to die for. The beer, wine and alcohol selection is vast and creative. For dessert, I ordered the white chocolate strawberry bread pudding which was delicious but a little on the bland side. My mom ordered the peppermint ice cream which was very tasty and smooth as butter! Overall this place is definitely my favorite part about coming to Longwood Gardens in the winter season. Will be back next year!
