"Looking for love in all the wrong places"
"lookin for love in too many faces"
For some reason these lyrics come to mind when I think of 19 Broadway....well I'm not exactly looking for love but a decent place to get a beer after work is that too much to ask? (Well hell you might call it love I guess)
I recently moved to West Marin and am completely a fish out of water with where to go to have a quick beer and unwind. I have not been to 19 Broadway for the nightlife but have been in here a few times after work and well it is sort of weird vibe all around every time. The bartender was pretty cool but she seemed preoccupied with the very needy regular patrons wanting her attention all the time. Which takes me to the patrons, the general make up of which might best be described as an AARP bingo night only with alcohol and loud shouting. Now don't get me wrong I have no issue with old folks having a drink or six and I am sure someday I'll be in their shoes but these folks were LOUD. For example the guy a couple of barstools away was shouting "Do ya want to tach about it?!!!" " Lishen, lishen to me, I'm tachin to you!" I have no idea who he was talking to but I kept my stare off in the distance making sure not to make any eye contact with him, knowing damn well if I did I would be pulled into his drunken vortex which the only way to extract oneself is to drink quickly and leave. The bartender came over a few times to get him to simmer down and was trying to find one of his cronies to take him home but they sort of waved it all off as if to say "oh that's just Joe (generic name), he gets like that, you gotta take the good with the bad". He left on his own accord only to come back a short while later.
So for some reason when the bartender asked if I wanted another beer I said "sure" this poured out of my mouth instictively but about two sips into the second beer I said to myself "what am I doing here?" and when that question gets asked you know it is time to go ....and so my search continues....just a clean well lit place with no old drunks please that is all...."God bless the day I discover you, oh you, lookin for love" -

Your stupid bar is the only place that drunks go in any surrounding town. That said...aware of the boredom that was to ensue the night i decided to leave the liberal safety of SF and drive out of my way to your ghetto bar just to visit old friends, i decided i was going to get wasted as this is the only way of enjoying the surroundings.
After drinking my share of Jameson i decided to "trip" by the bar which prompted your "bouncer" to summon the police across the street instead of simply finding one of my 5000 friends. DICK
This besides the fact that its the seediest crowd EVER and the biggest rip off as usual
Neverrrr again -

BEWARE THIEVES AT 19 BROADWAY
To whom it may concern,
I am the Creative Director for an Ad Agency in the Bay Area. It is truly unfortunate that I have to write this, as it is against my Buddhist nature, but after three such unfortunate incidents with the same individual, I have been advised that my Situational Ethical responsibility is to make folks aware.
I have only been to 19-Broadway three times, each time for a benefit of some sort. We had heard that this last Saturday was about Breast Cancer and my wife and I wanted to show our support because we have lived closely with this issue in our family. A small group of us came from a Party in Mill Valley and arrived a little before midnight. We stayed for about six or eight songs by the various contributing amateur performers.
At near one a.m. we decided to leave. My wife does not drink at all and in our small group we all had consumed a total of five drinks--the first of which I had paid with cash because there was a $20 minimum for using credit/debit cards and I was only having one or two more after our party. When I got back to my group by the stage I realized that they too were thirsty, so I asked around and ended up charging 4 more drinks to my debit card.
As we were leaving and saying goodnight I went back to the bar and asked for my check, only to be extremely surprised by a credit card charge for nine (9) drinks. I asked the very young bartender for his attention but before I could finish my sentence he jumped down my throat yelling and screaming at me at me at the top of his voice, "Sir you drank nine beers." As I tried to explain that I was with a group and that I had paid cash for the first and that we had just arrived and that we had only charged four beers he began to yell at the top of his lungs over and over again, "which was it sir, was it four or five beers? Which was it sir did you have four or five beers?" over and over again. I could not get a word in edgewise over his screaming at me and then he just yelled to the manager or bouncer, "GET HIM OUTTA HERE!!" My wife and I just walked out in disbelieve.
I never had a chance to sign my check for the four drinks, but after witnessing this very low class behavior three times, I have become concerned that they in fact may have charged me for the nine drinks. I am now having to keep an eye my bank account this week to see what debits come in.
Now, clearly this young man is not only petty a thief, but also needs anger management classes. The most unfortunate issue here is that his low class demeanor also reflects and is indicative of the establishment.
I recommend that anyone reading this should boycott this establishment--especially non-profits who wish to host their events in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere.
The previous two times had only been one and two drinks extra, respectively, that had been charged to my card by this kid, but I had let it go because I had not paid attention to the bill when I signed it. I had written the first one off as 'a mistake.' The second time, I was infuriated and swore never to go back to this dive. I went back this time because the group was insistent that we should at least show our face for support.
The best I can conjure of what happened all three times, as I observed, and by this young man's rash and violent display, was that at these benefits not too many people drink alcohol and the performances are truly not for just anyone walking off the street, so business at the bar is slow. You can figure out the rest.
Please be aware of the young white short kid behind the bar. In my opinion, he is a thief. In my opinion this reflects the establishment and therefore as long as this unprofessional child works there, they too are thieves.
Sincerely
Jaime Tomas Ordonez Victoria -

I am sitting on 19 Broadway's outdoor patio. Warm familiar smells all around, while soulful crooning trickles outside, above steady guitar strumming. My foot tapping along under the heat lamps, I wish I could bottle the mellow supportive vibe at 19 Broadway's Open Mic and take it home with me. I'd sleep alot more sound. I'd wake up a little more energized. Spend your slow Mondays here and your steps home will be lighter.

The fact that it's name is 19 Broadway but the address is 17 Broadway shows what kind of imbeciles we're dealing with. That said...
Dear Scroungy Bouncer,
I apologize for walking by you without showing ID or paying cover. You were sitting 5 feet away from the door (inside the bar, no less) and I took you to be just another dirty, drunk Fairfax hippie. Although it was my bad for not realizing your bar had the audacity to charge a $7 cover for what sounded like an autistic midget rapper, grabbing my ass as I walked by was extremely inappropriate. Perhaps things would have been different if you had gotten off your lazy, stoned ass rather than groping me. Maybe your manager can use the profts from charging cover to put you through sexual harassment training, or at least book Friday night entertainment who has actual talent.
Yours truly,

We went here to listen to the band . . . . we also discovered a great little intimate bar and music venue with lots of rich history.
Plenty of seats early in the evening, but as the band sets up and starts to play, things really pick up. Get your seats early if you want to hear & see the band.
We heard Dore Coller & his Carribean band here last week. What a hoot! Great musicians, good dance floor. Place was packed by 10PM. -

I remember being a little girl walking past 19 Broadway on my way to the movie theater and being terrified of the creatures that spilled out onto the sidewalks.
fast forward 12 years and i discover: Holy Shit! When did I become one of those creatures!?!
I definately don't frequent this place often, pretty much when the headliners are good. I mean, seeing Agent Orange or Royal Crown Review practically in my back yard?! those are nights to remember.
Everytime i come here, though, I feel a little bit more dirty or like a little bitmore of my soul has been lost. But, i guess its not anything a Newcastle won't fix...Listed in: The Places I Go Out

If I ever get lost in an unfamiliar town, I hope to come across a bar like 19 Broadway again. Knowing nobody and nothing about the area, we were pretty stranded after a car related issue. We walk in, simply asking if they knew the number to their local cab company. The bar tender didn't think twice and asked us if she could call one for us and she did. We sat at the bar exhausted after our 13+ mile hike and ordered some non-alcoholic drinks. While the bf made a few calls to numbers that were again provided to him by the awesome bar tender, the friendly locals introduced themselves. A sweet older gentleman even cracked a few jokes with me. Haha.
If ever in the area, I can see myself enjoying the atmosphere with their outdoor seating and the live bands that perform on the stage.
Thank you bartender~~!! I wish I got your name. We owe you one!! -

19 Broadway, located on 17 Broadway, WTF?, is defently a hit or miss location. They are known for having some pretty decent shows for a small town venue, and are also known for catering to a younger target market.
When you arrive, you may see the same faces as the last time you came, simply bc there's not much of a nightlife in Marin, and traveling 15 minutes to SF is too far for most locals. 19 Broadway has steep cover charges on performance nights (20+), and the bar is packed, sometimes average wait time for a drink is about 10-15 minutes.
Some pro's are the back patio, tiki bar, the dance floor and also the aroma of Cali's finest herb blowing in your face.
Some cons: same people every weekend, the door guy who steals your money, the only male bartender who makes the lousiest drinks ever, the police which sit outside waiting for drunks to make one wrong step, the tacky retro disco lights and lastly, the B.O some of these hippies have..Listed in: Favorite places to get my…

Review from Don H.
This review is from the point of view of someone who played in a band there.
It's a pretty ordinary bar, though there's a good sized covered outdoor space (with heat lamp!) if you like to smoke. But in back, there's a stage with a good lighting rig and an impressively good sound system for such a small space. We're a big group (14 people), and their sound guy was a total pro - dealt with our crazy complexity very well, set up (I think) 5 different monitor mixes for us, and by all reports from the crowd the sound in the room was fantastic. Nice work!
The music club part of the bar has space for maybe 200 people or so, with a good sized dance floor in front of the stage. The ceiling is pretty low, which makes the club feel smaller. There's also a second bar in back, for easy access in the club space. -

Came here to check out a group of friends perform. It was okay, nothing particularly special. They've got a small stage, small dance floor, and a bar. The bar's drinks are weak. At the time I went it was obvious that the promoters had brought in their own people to work the door which was just a disaster. They were completely stressed and unorganized.
The $20 cover charge was too much for what I got. -

I came here yesterday after a fun family day at Lake Lagunitas. My cousins and I werent done visiting, so we asked our Uncle for a nice place to grab a drink in Fairfax. He recommened a few places and we ended up here. We sat out on the patio, which was nice.
It seems like the crowd could be a "hit or miss". One guy on the patio had his zipper down, kept playing with his crotch and staring at us.
Other than this creep, we had a great time! Seems like the perfect place to go for daytime cocktails when there is nice weather... I have no idea what it is like at night.! -

I believe the actual address for this bar is 17 Broadway.
This is one bar that knows nothing but hospitality. Everyone was extremely friendly, and everyone seemed to know everyone and their mom's.
It was as if I got stranded, took a 10 mile walk to this bar after my car broke down and came in here to find out that they would provide me with a ferry schedule, a phone call to the sheriff's, and a call for a taxi to get where I needed to go. Oh wait... -

What more could you ask for when your favorite bands play walking distance from your house?
Whether your sipin' on a mojito at the Tiki lounge or just hanging by the bar this is a great place to meet locals, have brew and every first Friday of the month listen to great mellow sounds of reggae music .
19 Broadway I would say defiantly classifies as the bar for a younger crowd, otherwise you can head over to Naves and hang with some old men.
If your one of those folks who doesn't want to pay the weekends cover, go during the week for free entertainment, Monday nights open mic is always amusing.
They keep things local host events for community members, celebrations as well as memorials.
I am especially fond of the local bands that play there frequently such as;
Muchoaxe who plays salsa music every third Thursday of the month with a salsa dance lesson before hand (http://www.muchoaxe.com/ ).
The Diamond Ortiz are two brothers who, let's just say they know how to rock!
And La Muneca Y los Muertos which is the best ska/ punk band around the bay! http://www.lamunecaroc...
This local bar is not just about the booze there are really dedicated to hand selecting the best music Fairfax has seen since Janis Joplin!
So check them out and don't be a hater.

This is what I'm talking about for small venue performances! Saw English Beat here! Yes, English Beat, just a couple of weekends back. THIS is where the legends go to play. THIS is where many of the future legends come to play. If you truly want to enjoy some fantastic singers and musicians, make sure to hit up this historic venue. Fantastic acoustics and don't have to deal with the fake ID kiddies that you've become old enough to notice at the Warfield and such places.
Yes it's a bit of a dive at first glance...but it's side patio is gorgeous on a sunny afternoon or warm night with easy access to the main bar. The more recently renovated smaller bar has been transformed into a pretty cool tiki (sp?) lounge. Cool corners, tall tables, great use of space and well-mixed drinks.
Nice top shelf asssortment, along with pretty impressive availabilities on tap. Scuzzy old men at the bar? - the only ones I saw are retired power tycoons...So if you don't want to be stared at while trying to drink with the friends - go for performances instead.
Legends, I said. And true small venue. -

I could see how with the right band this place could be a lot of fun.
The door guy was a little creepy, but then again it gives the place character.
The drinks weren't very strong, and the bartenders weren't overly friendly. I will give it another chance, the friend who I was with had a great time last time she visited. I guess it just depends on the night.
I will say the older women with beer 'ponchos' on their coronas were pretty entertaining, I'm not sure I should share this but they were planning on letting there boyfriends wear the ponchos later if you know what I mean... -

Hard to believe that a small town like Fairfax can support a truly busy downtown area but it does. (a Five screen theatre, and four music playing venues without walking distance plus numerous places to eat help.
This is probably the premier spot in the area for music. They often host famous musicians and my husband for one a long time fan of Mose
Allison loves to go to all his shows here (which are always sold out)
The Bamboo Lounge with VICE GRIP in session is fun and has cool drinks.
This a wonderful place to hang out on Sunday evenings early
when the jam sessions for musicans takes place....you never really know who will show up, especially since many famous and semi famous musicans make the area in and around Fairfax their home. -

Ahhhh, still groovin' after all these years!
I filmed several international musician's music videos here, shot stills here for music artists, and listened to Chuck Wagon's vibes for years and years.
I met my old boss, Peter Tork from the Monkees here, too. Peter was just chillin' out at the bar hanging out listening to Chuck Wagon's Band. Please check out my personal pics and you will see the pic of Peter with Gail Muldrow and me.
Too many international musician friends I have known for eons have graced this cool digs playing their music. You never know who might be playing here!
So, if you feel like dancing to REAL music rather than spinnin', please check out 19 Broadway's URL http://www.19broadway.... for what's up!
Hint: Jam Night is on Monday nights. Pack your music gear, get your jam groovin on, and jam with THE finest, talented, well-reknown musicians from around the planet here! Oh, get on the gig list if you intend to jam! Step up your game! -

Left the City and drove out to catch an Agent Orange show. Friend and I were disappointed to see that the English Beat played the week before, so even before walking in, we decided to make it a point to check out the calendar for this club on a regular basis.
I have to agree with the other reviewers - cover is very high, but this is a teeny spot. No matter where you are, you'll practically be in the drummer's lap. There's a small dance floor, a cute tiki bar (reminds me of something you'd see in a nice basement), and a handful of tables. The other reviewer who compared this to the cool garage that everyone wants to hang out in, nailed the vibe of this place. Trust me, it's a good thing. -

Guys will relate to this more but do you remember being a teenager and there was a guy whose garage everyone hung out in ?
He was a probably a wrench, there might have been an old couch, a beat up boom box playing weathered Zeppelin / Aerosmith cassettes, some badly worn Playboys and an assortment of spitoon's and ashtray's for all of your newly found tobacco addictions.
Who says you can't go home ?
Welcome to 19 Broadway, this place is a shithole, but as with the old garage that may not necessarily be a bad thing.
In fact it's a good thing, who wants to go see a band play in a bar that is well lit and clean ? My mom maybe ?
A friend cajoled me into going to see the English Beat there, which is really just fat little Dave Wakeling and a bunch of johnny come lately's, hahaha, that's what he should call the band: Dave Wakeling and the Johnny Come Lately's, hey you heard it here first !
But I'm being a dick, it was a pretty good show and they did justice to the songs, or at least they sounded the way I remembered them. I could verify it if I felt like digging through 500 CD's buried in the back of a closet to find my copy of "Special Beat Service" but I don't.
It was a little sad looking around the room at all the 40 somethings out for a big night on the town, all 200 of them and poor Dave and Co. up on a tiny little cramped stage with shitty lighting, play'in his dang heart out.
To think he used to pack major venues and in his day and had some pretty big hits, ahhh a fleeting mistress is celebrity. Guess he didn't manage his money very well, hell by the looks of his clothing he didn't manage it at ALL !
One thing if you're heading out to "Only in Fairfax" to see a show, make sure someone in your group goes easy on the booze, no matter how you get there you've got to get past some small town cops with nothin, and I mean nothing else to do.
Outside of that, not a bad bang for your entertainment dollar, $25 bucks, hell it costs that much for two people to see a damn movie and they don't serve cold beer at the movie theatre, or at least they don't at the one's near where I live.
Wonder why that is . . . ? -

Interesting experience - especially since I'm not from Marin originally. If you want to expose someone to the Fairfax experience - it's here. My friend took me here just for a drink and we wound up staying a couple of hours. The staff is friendly and the people at the bar are incredibly friendly. It's like everyone is best friends - even if they just met you. If you're on the patio - just sit where there's a chair if it doesn't look like anyone is sitting there. (It seems crowded no matter what day it is). Meet new people and mingle. It's what being at a bar is about. If you aren't cool with the Fairfax vibe - stay away - this place is NOT for you.

Woodacre, CA
I used to love this place, but there are a few things that irk me about it. First is the outrageous cover charges you have to pay to get in to hang out and drink booze with infalted prices (because of the live music), in a cramped space that isn't big enough to acomodate the small crowd that actually pays the cover to get in (Unless your my sister, who's cute enough to schmooze the door guy).
There have been some improvements to the joint, though. It doesn't stink as much as it used to and the place has been cleaned up. The liquor store that used to be next door, is now an add on tiki lounge. I used to hang out here quite a bit, but since it's upgrade, I can't afford to, unless the band is one I really want to see.
There's always Peri's next door. It's affordable and much roomier. It has a dance floor you can actually dance on (Unlike 19 Brodway), without being completely squished. -

I have been to 19 Broadway 3 or so times. Always have a great time seeing the wonderful music booked. The service is always great, staff is very prompt, polite, and friendly while serving so many all at once. I really like this club and wanted to share that sentiment. One of the rockin' places to go in Fairfax!!

San Anselmo, CA
The experience here depends a lot on the band. They have a lot of great bands, and a lot of unlistenable amateurish crap.
The place is pretty big and has a good dance floor and a long stage. Kind of crappy sound, compared with real venues, but probably the best in Fairfax. The bartenders can be really nice or complete douches, depending on whether they're drunk, how many people are in there, etc. Doormen, always kind of rude in my experience, but I'm sure they're nice to someone. There's something wrong with the toilets or sewage, as it always smells like a poopfest near the bathrooms and has since I've been going there, about 13 years.
The place is party central; I've had strange girls show me their tits, seen all kinds of fights and altercations, some involving ambulances and police, witnessed use and abuse of every illegal drug, etc. And it has that same buncha drunks hanging out every night..... But, damn! if you use the word "party" as a verb, and/or especially if you know the musicians or a bartender, it can be super duper hella fun scene. You just gotta be ready to rumble. -

I came in to check out the tiki bar, of course. Not a bad one for the small room it's in. Didn't totally have the whole tiki vibe since there's a big regular bar next to it with live shows. Some music just doesn't jibe with being in a tiki bar. I've seen some great shows here and have been pleasantly surprised by the music scene in Fairfax.

What sets this place above and beyond the other bars in Fairfax is not 19 Broadway itself, but the tiki bar that is connected to it. Although I have enjoyed many a beer and a live music show in the main bar (my personal favorite was the Breeders), there is something about a quaint little tiki bar that just gets me. Is it the feeling that a tropical vacation is just right around the corner? Or is it just the fun coconut-shaped glasses that everyone always tries to steal when they are really drunk at the end of the night? All I know is that when I lived in Fairfax last year, this was my favorite spot to visit on a Friday or Saturday night. If I remember correctly, the tiki bar wasn't open the other nights of the week, only the main bar area of 19 Broadway; keep this in mind if you're out looking for some "tiki-action" in West Marin on a weeknight.

San Anselmo, CA
It's high priced and as another--Thespian--stated--it's a Shit hole, but
it's all Marin has anymore. I once overhead the Owner(old angry white guy) complaining about the lack of people drinking. IMO--he would be
happy with a bunch of bloated alcoholics spending their pay check in this dump? Well--the drinks are low in alcohol, so if you want to stretch your dollar, stick to beer. If you're new to Marin; really make sure you under
.08 because there's a good chance of our overzealous Revenue Collectors pulling you over, even if your driving fine(they make up reasons-tail light dim, etc.).
If you go on a busy night be aware of the Packeminvirus. It's
caused by greed and horrid ventilation. Yes--after a few drinks the night won't seem too bad, that's if your not overcharged, or you purse
stolen, but on Monday morning you might feel the little tickle in the
back of your throat? You will get better and at least it's not an STD.
I do miss the few bars Marin once had, but if your really desperate
this place will suffice? I can guarantee one thing though; you won't
meet your future Sweetheart there. The women who frequent the place a lot have horrid histories and can be downright dangerous--one is refereed
to as the Black Widow. She's way over the hill and at least one guy hung himself under her house--really. It's a side of Fairfax you want to stay
away from. So, if your looking for social contacts it's best to stick to the newbies--really! Hone in on the people who look lost--don't fall
for the Loud Mouth Local Tramps. Good luck! -

The older woman that works behind the bar is a complete biatch. I went in there the day before a show last week and attempted to buy 4 tickets with cash and she would not sell them to me. Not only would she not give me a reason, but she didn't make eye contact and was obviously lying through her teeth. I know you can buy physical tickets from the bar because I have done it before, but she just kept saying, "pay the cover at the door the night of the show." I explained to her that I had driven all the way from the city to buy the tickets so I wouldn't have to worry about it being sold out when my friends and I got there the next night. She refused to even have a conversation with me and held firm on her point. Thus, I asked her if she didn't have the physical tickets to sell or if she just did not want to sell them...surprise, surprise. No answer. Very rude and will never get my money ever again. On another note, the place always smells horrible and the ceiling is probably lower than the one in your house. Most bands that play there play other places in Sonoma or San Francisco a day or two on the either end and I STRONGLY suggest saving your money for that show.
There must have been a reason why that sh*t hole burned down in the first place. It's called karma. They've been treating people like that for years. -

I try to stay away from 19 B as much as possible. It's meat market dejour for drunken 20 somethings. I would have loved it in college, but now, not so much. They do have some good bands that come, but the cover is WAY too much for what it is ($20+). I've paid less for tickets to GREAT bands at amazing venues in the city. My suggestion, walk down the street, pay less to get in (if anything at all) and drink safely in a bar where people actually want to talk to you and not just google at your boobs.

would love to buy the place and turn it around. It's pathetic now.
I don't know why the fire department hasn't closed them down. If you
want thepackemin virus, by all means buy a 20 dollar ticket and a 10
dollar watered down drink. -
Review from Fairfax P.

Even though the Tiki Bar and upstair apartments burnt, there are still amazing shows lined up. KRS ONE is coming March 20th and several reggae shows before then. Let them know you still love them and see how they might need help, so we can all enjoy the upcoming events. Blessings 19... I hope you did not burn by the hand of some jealous punk spreading lies and ill will. We love you all!!!

A tiki bar? In Fairfax?!?!?!?! at 19th & Broadway? ...YUP!... And the bartender makes the best Mojito you've EVER had, I swear it's true!!!! Although the tiki bar is not always open, it's mostly open on weekends, or if they have a well known band playing on a week night. They also have a great monthly, every 1st friday, Reggae, Dancehall and Hip Hop. You may see me there, "Smokin'" on the dance floor. Or you may not, it's hard for me to keep track of my fridays, sometimes the 1st one will roll over and I've missed it. But do go, and have a Mojito....You'll love it!
