Review from Amy H.
Hailing from a big, bustling city with many professional salons, I was a bit hesitant in finding a stylist in Santa Barbara. In turn, I went onto Yelp to find somewhere to go as I was in need of a haircut. I read all these good reviews at 19 Blue for Savannah, so I went ahead and booked a haircut.
Firstly, parking isn't bad - there are some meter spots right outside but worst case scenario you can park in the Paseo Nuevo parking lot and if you make it back in under 75 minutes, I'm pretty sure parking will be free.
My first impression of the salon was that the ladies working there were extremely chatty, friendly, enthusiastic, and full of energy (which I loved). I checked in at the reception and waited less than five minutes until Savannah came over and introduced herself.
I told her what I wanted and she led me off to get my hair washed. One of my complaints was that the head and neck massage that I'm very used to in the salon back at home was missing! There was a little bit of massaging, but not enough to constitute it as a massage. Boo! That's usually the best and most relaxing part of getting my hair done and it wasn't there - major disappointment.
Anyways, during the whole cut Savannah seemed very nice and genuine, making appropriate conversation but taking care not to be overly enthusiastic or fake which was nice. She did exactly as I asked and my hair felt great. This isn't the cheapest place to get your hair cut but I'm always paying $50+ because I have long hair that requires a little bit more time so I didn't think too much of it.
Pros: friendly, efficient, listened to what I wanted, easy parking, and great results
Cons: missing head massage during shampoo
Verdict: I'll definitely be going back to Savannah from now on! -

I met a girl who works there at a party last year and thought what the hell, why not give 19 Blue a try for my wedding 'do consultation.
I met with Anne who is a stylist there and found her to be so much fun and knowledgable and just an all around great stylist. The place is a good mix of artsy meets professional. Great gals with great style.
I was impressed with the style I left with and that much more excited for the my next appointment Anne.
I have had some pretty scary experiences at salons and this one was just what i needed to put all those fears to rest.
If I can find something better to write about this place, then I will. -

I have nothing but great things to say about this salon!!
It had been a while since my last 'cut...kinda let the winter season take hold of my laziness. It was time to get my ears lowered before going to Vegas.
I went in and asked Ann to unleash her creative side to craft my new 'do. Immediately she had a vision - and went to work!
She is amazing!! She kept me informed as to what she was doing....and I totally love the end result.
Love the energy, love the atmosphere, and love the personal attention. Such a great place with great stylists.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Becca P.
Goleta, CA
Worst haircut of my life.
I wanted to go shorter; I got a choppy mullet. There is legitimately a two-inch thick chunk of hair that is inches shorter than the rest of my hair, bangs included. It is framing my face, which, in my opinion, is the worst possible spot to have a huge mess-up, as it is the first thing that I (and anyone who looks at me) will see.
The girl recommended an A-frame cut, so I told her to go for it. However, the A-frame was done so horrendously (it was not a soft, subtle angle, but rather, resembled a staircase as it was so choppy--the longest part was a good inch and a half longer than the next 'chop' of hair).
I told her I didn't love it, and would prefer to have it cut straight across. However, even after the attempt at fixing it, I still have a wannabe A-frame, and the right side is a good half inch longer than the left, with random strands of hair (that were clearly accidentally missed) that don't fit anywhere in the cut.
Even the color is wrong; how one can manage to mess up an all-over color is beyond me. I wanted to do a dark brown, and told the girl doing my hair that if an undertone was needed, I would prefer gold over red; needless to say, my hair now has a red undertone.
I assumed that the price would reflect that of an amateur stylist, and was going to leave without expressing my distaste for the cut, as I would go somewhere else and have them fix it; however, when I went to pay I was shocked at how expensive it was (not expensive for a good salon, but definitely overpriced for the butchering I ended up with), and decided to speak up. I will say, however (the only positive thing I have to say about this entire experience), that the girl was extremely nice and apologetic, and did not charge me for the horrendous 'do.'
Usually after a few days a new cut will grow on me (no pun intended). This is the first time, however, that I have grown to hate my hair more everyday. I went from looking and feeling really pretty, to having hair that is really ____ (fill in the blank). -

I've had two separate experiences here and both were great although my last one far exceeded my first!
The first time I visited 19 Blue i was in dire need for a haircut. I'm not typically the type of person that is okay with dropping a lot of money on my hair and especially being a broke just out of college kid I was perfectly content to hand my hair over to friends with kitchen shears. Now that i'm on my feet a little bit I decided i was due for a real salon experience and looked to Yelp for a place to go.
The first time I went I got a cut from Shanna who was perfectly sweet and attentive. I left feeling good but not the "amazing" that I was hoping for. I liked the salon enough to try it again and this time booked Savannah for a cut and color. OMG what a difference. with minimal instruction (i like to let the pros do what they do, i know nothing about hair) she turned my "meh" hair into rich luscious locks. I spent a good amount of time in the chair but that doesn't bother me at all, I'd rather a stylist take their time then rush me through an appointment. She is genuinely sweet without trying too hard to make conversation which I appreciate so so much. I left with a huge smile across my face and even had the urge to go shopping for new clothes to match how hott I felt.
I'm telling everyone I know about this place. thank you Savannah! -

It's too dark in this place for the stylists to do color. They can not accurately tell how the color is processing As a result, the color was extreme. I had asked for fine weave highlights so that it looked natural. I got thick, chunky bleached-almost-white anime-looking hair with deep contrasts.
They offered to correct it for another $65. I have never heatd of a stylist not stand behind their work before. Rather than waste more money, I went home and fixed it myself with all-over color. -

I love 19 Blue!! Savannah does an AMAZING job with my color and cut - I always walk out of the salon looking like a million bucks! Everyone there is super nice and easy to get along with.
I've been telling everyone I can about 19 Blue. My husband is even hooked! -

Great Santa Barbara haircut without the Santa Barbie PRICE! I think working with scissors is a trained skill not shared by many but I cringe when paying more than say $70 for a trim. I've been to a number of "pretty good" places in Santa Barbara and figured unless I wanted to visit Walter Claudio (where many of my friends with fabulous hair go), I'm stuck with a "pretty good" cut at a hefty price.
Here, I paid much less ($50 - haircuts start at $45 and go to $70) for an actual haircut where Ann cut my hair up to my shoulders. Yikes! What's worse, I like it! The yelp hype is TRUE. This place is fabulous!
Park at the shopping center for free, sip on tea while they cut your hair, enjoy conversation (not too fluffy or too heavy or too personal), and leave with a great cut!
By the time I got to Macys across the street, I had already received two compliments. -

Update, 2/1/10:
I decided to treat my mom, my husband's mom, and my three bridesmaids to updos/hair styling at this salon the morning of my wedding. Angela worked on my hair, and Nicole, Ann, and Ashley worked on everyone else. I have to say, everyone's hair held up (for 12 hours), and I have never heard so many compliments. They worked very quickly, allowing us to stay on schedule for the big day ahead of us.
Special thanks to the ladies at 19 Blue salon!Listed in: I Shop & Primp Too Much, Our Santa Barbara Wedding

Shanna Spenser is the best hair dresser I have ever found. She helped me look beyond amazing on my wedding day. She was so calm and soothing. I so needed her. Her energy is clean and professional. Her ability to help me find the perfect cut, color, and style is right on and always makes me look better and better. She even helps me get out of my hair "ruts" when I really need a change. Thank you shanna! I will follow you anywhere. Except maybe Alaska.

Went back for another haircut last week with Savannah (I refused to have anyone else cut my hair after she did a fabulous job last time--I went 8 months without cutting (I was abroad).. won't do that again haha).
My hair looked fantastic exiting the salon and just as good a week later (even when I don't blow dry it). She also managed to bring my normally limp hair to life! I have texture and volume!! yay :)
Would recommend her in a heartbeat.
Oh, and make sure to check out the bathroom!! I think it is so cute and I love that they give you actual TOWELS to dry your hands with--nice touch + ecofriendly.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This salon is the best in the west and Ann (the owner) is the best stylist a girl can get. Ann used to work at Salon Bamboo, but she's since opened her own shop. The vibe is hip and comfortable. I've been going to Ann for over 5 years, and even though I moved to LA, I still drive up to SB to get my hair done. There is no distance I wouldn't travel to see Ann.
Ann has been with me through the thick and thin (pun intended). I first came to her as a hair virgin, only having had mild highlights and very minimal styling in my cut. Our relationship grew to chopping off my hair in spiky mullets, to shaving part of it and dying an apple in the shave part, to purples, greens, blues, blacks, etc. Those days are now past and my hair is long and a pretty brown and the cut just rocks.
Point being...Ann can do ANYTHING. And do it well, with great conversation to boot. She is seriously the best I've ever found, and living in LA, that says a lot.
I'd recommend Ann to anyone. Once you see her, you'll never go to anyone else. I still get stopped in the street by people asking me where I get my hair done. Luckily, I always have one of Ann's cards on hand. I'm in hair love with Ann. -

Nicole gave me an excellent emergency wash and blow-dry, even though I was late to my appointment. Friendly, easy to talk to, and fast: everything I need from a hairdresser. Also she has my preferred products: Moroccan Oil treatment, Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine, Schwarzkopf Magic and Upload.
Tons of compliments in about five minutes. Total bill with tip $40. -

My hair was just begging to be trimmed. I could no longer wear my bangs as I like to (everyday was a headband day, blech), and my split ends were growing their own split ends
Oh yeah, I looked hot. NOT.
I actually needed a haircut right when I moved down to Santa Barbara a little over a month ago, but pushed it as far as I could because I am deathly afraid of new stylists toying with my hair. I was lucky enough to have a beloved, creative and stable stylist for over five years back in the Bay Area who I was just aching to hold on to.
But of course, sometimes you gotta let go and move on...
I called 19 Blue Salon at noon, and they got me an appointment at 2pm. Definitely a plus! I had my appointment with Pete. Right off the bat he gained my trust.
I told him I needed a bang trim and about an inch or so off of the length of my hair. He recommended that I get shorter layers around my face (something I always dreaded doing, as my hair is naturally curly and awfully frizzy) so I let him do it and it looks great!
He is a bit quiet, but we had good conversation and he made me feel great about my hair! Kept telling me how silky it is, how he likes my natural hair color, and all that jazz. What girl doesn't like to be told she has great hair?!
Anyways, Pete did an awesome job. His price for a cut came out to be $50, and they give 15% off to first time customers :)
Everyone at 19 Blue seemed to be loving what they were doing, along with the customers as well. Definitely a home-y, family feel going on. I dig it!!Listed in: Santa Barbara: My Journey

This is the best salon I've ever been to, and Ann is the best hairdresser! She does AMAZING color and cuts, and is really versatile - a lot of girls in my sorority with completely different styles/hair textures/color demands/etc see Ann and she has done amazing things with each of their hair.
Unfortunately I've been spoiled by Ann and since moving away from Santa Barbara a couple of months ago have been pining away for 19 Blue. I just can't seem to find anyone who is as precise, close to the root or creative as Ann is with color. And her prices are very reasonable considering her expertise.
The only downside is that she is booked out well in advance so be sure to call at least a month before you need an appointment. If you can't get Ann, I know a lot of girls who go to Ashley and love her as well. They are both sweet ladies! Miss all of you at 19 Blue! xo -
Review from Laura H.
Couldn't be happier! I've had my haircut by Ann since her Salon Bamboo days. I was very excited to hear that she opened up her own shop!
Unfortunately, I had to leave that oasis, but every now and then when I'm making plans to head south, the first thing I do is call 19 Blue and see if Ann can squeeze me in. She's really amazing, and after 5 years, she still has stayed true to her cutting style!
I think Ann's strongest point is she listens to her clients, and explains if she's going to do that or provides strong recommendations to why she thinks a different style would work better for you. I have long hair, and I think one thing stylists (excluding Ann) don't always get is keep the LENGTH, please.
The last time I came in, I also told Ann I wanted bangs, and she honestly asked me "How much time do you spend on your hair in the morning? Will you be able to commit to an extra 10 minutes to fix your bangs? Do you hair on your face?" Um, NO was my answer to all of the above. We compromised and she gave me a side swoop so I can have partial bangs and still do my pompadour style.
The salon itself is central and located right down town. Clean, bright and open space; the ambiance is perfect for a haircut. Very friendly and non-annoying staff as well. The price range is great, which also keeps me really happy to come back. I've tried a few places in SF and they've been both medicore and pricy.
The only thing I would improve is the drink selection. There's no wine :) -

19 Blue is a new salon that was opened by some of the best hair stylists in Santa Barbara. I followed my stylist Christina Svec when she started working here. Christina is great - I am extremely picky about my hair and she always makes it look great. She really makes an effort to understand what I want. She is especially good with my fine hair - I've gone to her to have my hair styled for special events and she is able to give it more volume than I've ever had before!
The salon itself is a great space and all the stylists are friendly. It's also in a prime location for showing off my new 'do on State street! I would highly recommend 19 blue to any of my friends. -

I made my first appointment to have a consult with Ann. Waited 45 mins and never saw her. Three people asked me if I had been helped in that time but I still was never seen. You might ask "why would someone wait 45 minutes for an appointment"? Well the truth is I was really looking forward to having a great experience at this salon and was looking forward to this hair appointment. -I heard great things about this place?! I just can't believe that someone would run their business like this!! Unbelievable.

Review from Ida G.
I went here because I knew someone with a great cut and highlights, and she said she'd had them done here. I made an appointment for highlights and ended up bleach-blond all over, and my hair felt like straw from the hair spray. As it so happened, it was not the hair spray but that my hair had been completely dried out by the abuse, and it took several very intensive treatments at home to get it back into shape. I don't remember the guy's name, but looks like the rave reviews are for female hairdressers, so my only recommendation at this point would be to ask for one of those people by name.

I love 19 Blue! I go to Ann, who I think is the owner. All of the staff is friendly, the place is adorable, and every person that walks out has amazing hair. I have a handful of friends who go here as well and we are always more than please with our haircuts. As far as Ann, she really makes an attempt to get to know you and find something that fits you. She has given me great colors and great styles that are unique and fun. I love it and have recommended this salon to all my friends.

I had several great experiences with cuts and styles here, but unfortunately when I chose to do color I was not so happy. I'm glad I went with highlights and not an all over bleach as some large, highlighted portions of my hair was melted off. On an attempt to touch up the roots at a later appointment without bleaching I ended up with two tone hair. Thankfully all of my appointments were on a trade basis and I didn't have to pay for my color.

So I was traveling in Santa Barbara on business when I looked in the mirror and realized that my eyebrows were *a mess.* So, after a quick search on Yelp, I was led to Salon 19. Yelpers did not disappointment! The folks at Salon 19 were able to get me in quick, did an amazing job, it didn't cost an arm and a leg (a regular wax is $20) and now I can spend the rest of my business trip looking fly. Thank you Salon 19!

When I first moved to SB, I got my hair cut by Ann after being referred to her by a number of colleagues. I thought she was so great and really friendly. She is always bubbly and talkative and really a talented hair stylist. I was excited to hear that she opened her own salon and I made sure to be one of the first in line once it opened. I now live in LA and plan to make the drive back to SB to get my hair cut by Ann.

Sometimes I think I'm being too generous with my ratings, but I hate giving a bad review. I honestly do really like this place. I only get my hair done professionally once a year around my birthday as a splurge. This review is for May 2010 when I was last here. They were able to fit me in on a one day notice. The salon is very clean and has a very nice welcoming feel to it. My hairdresser was very friendly and nice. I came in for a cut and for partial highlights. I have dark brown hair and had highlights from a year ago that had grown out but still visible. I asked her to cut my hair and match the color and style of my highlights. The cut was great. The layering and eveything was perfect. However, the highlight came out WAY too light. I looked almost blond. She could not match them at all. She offered to fix them at no charge when I came back (they were closing), but I didn't really feel comfortable. She sent me a nice card in the mail, and the cut was very nice. This is why I feel bad not giving a 5 star, but I feel like the highlights were done so bad, I couldn't go back there. I went back to LA to my regular stylist to get them fixed. From now on, I think I'm just going to have to deal with the 2 hr drive to La for my hair appointments.

i made an appointment and got one same day with Savannah who has a lot of great reviews...just for root color...my hair is really tough to do...so many stylist over process my hair and do it like three times burning me...she did a bleach with tone...and it came out great...no yellow no brass...100 bucks 120 w tip...pretty good price especially in santa barbara...just wish there could be a bleach that causes no burning sensation at all...i know there are some out there or a combo bleach with oil that does not burn...will be back...i am thinking of trying extensions here next time i need them.
