This place has absolutely amazing produce for a great price.

It reminds me a lot of Sunflower because if you just stick to the produce you walk out having spent very little money, but if you wander over to any other section things add up quickly.

That being said the grocery section has some really cool and unique items. They are worth a try. But this place really stands out to me for it's fantastic selection of delicious, fresh and affordable fruits and vegetables.

i've visited 17th street market twice in the last couple of weeks. all for made-in-hawaii purity brand portuguese sausage. i'm SO glad that they carry it. it makes me feel like i have a connection to home through them. even though it's $6+ a stick, it's so worth it.

they also have a variety of other asian foods/necessities that i pick up when i'm there. i like that everything is easy to find and the staff is always friendly and helpful.

I didn't know of this market until October-ish. I was on the hunt for bento items in Tucson which is a rare commodity. I was referred here to find bento boxes, which I did find utilitarian ones for men or business women (not the Romy and Michele kind).

I was able to capture some quail eggs, baby bok choy (which is usually hard to come by in the supermarkets), udon noodles and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. i like that you can buy the mushrooms in bulk because I always feel bad when I only need 3-4 of them and I can't find another use for the other ones right away and they go bad.

Back in the fall, I also came across some Mission Figs which were heaven in a skin! I can't wait until they come back into season.

    Enjoy this little gem.

This WAS the best place in Tucson to buy fresh produce & fish, but not any more.
They downsized the produce department. There is about half of what there used to be & fresh/frozen fish area is completly gone. In its place they have a party rental supply.
There is no point to visit this market anymore with all the changes and down sizeing & the prices still to high I rather go to Safeway or Sunflower.

They reuined a great Downtown Market!!!

When I first moved here I was all aflutter over having a funky local market near my home. But after shopping here a few times, I was really disappointed in their selection of normal food. They had a decent organic produce department, but rarely do they have anything I couldn't get at other stores nearby.

Their focus appears to be unique international ingredients and packaged foods. If you're looking for the special spice or sauce you need to make your favorite Asian dish, or a particular Mexican canned fruit juice beverage you had in Cabo last summer, you'd probably find it at 17th Street Market.

Now that they've done away with their fresh fish department (which was the only other reason I'd ever come here), I don't see this place staying open much longer.

I haven't been here in a long time.  It's half the size it was, and very few customers. It appears that what's left of it is just about ready to go belly up.  Lee Lee finished it off, just as I predicted it would.  Too bad.

For years I loved this place. It was a great place for fresh seafood, Asian food and cooking utensils, funky dishes, other ethnic foods, great produce, and all kinds of spices. They have now downsized and their selection is not nearly as good. No fish counter, less produce, less Asian food, no Asian cooking supplies. They still have a good supply of spices and certain ethnic foods, and the quality of the produce is still good, but there's nothing that will really draw me back again. And to top it off, they refused to accept an expired Groupon, despite the very clear policy written on the Groupon that says it will be honored at the value of the purchase price after expiration. The employees were polite about refusing it, and blamed "management," but between the downsize and the non-customer-friendly policy regarding the Groupon, sadly we won't be returning.

If there's one thing I love when it comes to cooking it's spices. And lordy does 17th Street have some spices! But it's so so much more than a spice market, the produce is usually abundant and pretty reasonably priced. And you can get some amazing things you can't find in your everyday grocery store. (Including Thai chilies, why are they so hard to find in Tucson?!). The tea selection is incredible, almost an entire aisle. And the Italian sausage, superb! Best addition to spaghetti ever!

The combination of hard to find, unique, foreign and day-to-day products can't be beat.

I have been out of Tucson for several months and am sad to read that the market is no longer selling fish. HOWEVER... this is still a fabulous place to purchase that hard to find ingredient or even a place to find something new to try. The first time I walked into the market I wasn't sure where to start... the fresh fruit and vegetables caught my attention and I was taken away after that.

This is a great place in Tucson and I hope we can make it last.

Don't forget to check out the music shop, just an added bonus to this great place.

I loves me some 17th Street Market.  My bf and I especially love their snack section.   The prices are good for their specialty items and I can always count on them to have what I need.  Especially in their oil/sauces/spices selection, they excel my expectations 80% of the time.

I'm kinda sad that they took down the frozen section because now if I want decent gyoza I have to make it myself (Ling Ling frozen just doesn't cut it --AT ALL).  Good thing I have 17th Street to supply me with quality ingredients to make my own.

If you're going here it's certainly not to get a great bargain on everyday items that you could find at any grocery store. It's more about ambiance, a cool-looking warehouse district, a music store/sandwich counter or to find some very unusual items that you might not locate otherwise. It's like a Trader Joe's on crack. More Meyer's cleaning supplies than you ever knew existed, the elusive Pellegrino Chinotto, Chinese herbal remedies, teapots, and dried fruits/nuts are just a few of the things you may see. Clothing items were 50% off when we were there and they had pajama jeans on a huge rounder. Blown Glass, salsa and hats are also available.

++++Honestly, though the best reason to find your way to 17th street is the catfish po' boy. It's not a fugazi. Veer right through the front door to the music shop where you will step to the counter and enter a doorway to the Po' Boy Zone. Yeah, it's a music shop/deli. Get lucky on a Saturday with live music like we did. Anthony Bourdain-you really missed out by not going here during your stint in the Sonoran desert.

Well, I hate to take a star away but there it is.  I was so sad to see that economic times have hit hard at 17th St. Market.  While I still love this place, it is so sad to see that they had to downsize by eliminating their fish market.  That was one of, if not THE highlight of the market for me.
I'll still shop here, but now I need to find a new place to purchase high quality seafood.  So sad.  That said, see my earlier review for why this place is still worth 4-stars.
Ultimate lesson to learn from this--it is imperative that we support our local markets and stores.  They are much more influenced by the swings of the economy than chains.  If we don't support these businesses, then the blame for any degradation in service lays squarely at our own door.

If heaven occupies a humid, slightly fishy smelling warehouse space in a hard to navigate corner of the cosmos, 17th Street Market must be heaven on earth.

Before you condemn my blasphemy, try their cherry butter. You will convert. There's a shelf across from the registers with several other 17th Street made (I think) condiments, but the cherry butter is the nectar of the gods! Made with two kinds of cherries, it's just sweet enough, with a slightly tart edge and velvety undertones of cinnamon and vanilla. Try not to eat it by the spoonful, or in a peanut butter sandwich on a loaf of Viro's bread everyday for two weeks like I did. Jeez, no wonder my pants are tight.

The vegetables, oh the vegetables. And the fruits! Did my husband and I need to spend $9.00 on three beautiful organic beefsteak tomatoes the size of a baby's head? Of course not. Such luxury! But since we haven't taken a vow of poverty, we did, and made the best, freshest salsa you can imagine. Shiny, fragrant, meyer lemons! What can I do with those? I don't care. I covet them all!.

You can also get 19 kinds of rice (I recommend the Himalayan Pink - beautiful contrast), 10 kinds of lentils, and honestly, anything else your heart desires. Crazy variety. The staff has always been super friendly and helpful. If you're going to go, don't plan to pop in or spend a couple bucks, unless you have the self-restraint of a saint. You're not leaving here without a whole shopping cart full of heaven.

I've been going to 17th St Market for years and I'm mad at myself for only now writing a review. If I had written a review two years ago, it would've received 5 stars, no question. Unfortunately with their continued downsizing and removal of the fish market, I find myself leaving with less and less every time I visit. They still have a decent fruit and vegetable section but their international food selection is also getting smaller and pricier.

I will continue to shop here and I encourage others to do the same. I live close by and I think it's really important to support local businesses. I hope someday I'll be able to write an updated review and give them more stars.

Damn! I feel guilty. I mentioned that the meats are organic. Well folks, they're not. I asked the employees in the grocery including the butcher and they all said the meats aren't 'organically raised'. Either way, the meat still taste and feels (tender) 'organic' . I'd still keep the 4 stars.

Several of my friends are serious cooks and 17th Street Market is on their circuit whenever they go shopping. The biggest draws are the fresh seafood and fresh vegetables from around the world. They tell me it's unique in the foods they offer.

I asked one of those cooks why she loved shopping here and this is what she said: "Fresh vegetables in their Farmer's Market with many Asian choices. This is what it's all about. The fresh seafood choices are incredibly diverse. My favorites are the Dover sole, wild salmon, halibut, and cod. The ethnic canned and frozen food choices are wonderful.
It's got many non-food delights also, such as the drumming lessons they offer in their beautiful music store. I love shopping here,"
    That says it all.

Sashimi-grade yellowtail within walking distance of my house makes me a happy camper.

17th St. Grill, accessible right inside, has seating inside the music store. The prices are cheap and the quality is great.

The catfish po'boy has a big filet with a crisp cornmeal coating. The lettuce very green, the buns were toasted crisp and the spicy sauce melded things just right.

The banh mi had grilled lemongrass pork which was overcooked, but I applaud their efforts with the cilantro and pickled daikon/carrot. Vietnamese mayo and a baguette is much different than normal mayo and a hoagie roll though, it would have made the sandwich so much better.

The fish tacos had filets of fish on a flour tortilla with cabbage on salsa. Plenty of fish for $3.50.

The grilled cheese is made on Texas toast so it's huge. When you pull it apart, it has a very photogenic cheesy gooey effect. I recommend getting it to go and stopping by the walk-in fridge to get a quart of milk for 99 cents and chillin' somewhere enjoying your buttery grilled cheese and chugging milk straight from the jug, it's just so satisfying.

Sad day at 17th Street Market. Mentioning the fact that you can no longer purchase fresh fish is sort of like putting salt on a wound... it happened... people have yelped about it... it's not coming back. My only hope is that the wound will scab over and form healthy tissue - wait that's not what I hope, my hope is that people will realize it's still a fabulous place to shop for quirky ingredients that you won't find anywhere else. I hear amazing things about their grill, but haven't yet had a chance to check it out, and I'm glad the tough times haven't really affected their music shop. Help keep 'em around Tucson, it's a great place for foodie ingredients and it would be a loss to see them close up shop.

This place is seventeen kinds of awesome. (Ya get it? ...*silence* Heh.)

There's so much stuff to look at! I love stores like this. :) Melon Creamy Soda by the case! Oodles of noodles! All the Asian goodies you can shake a wooden backscratcher at! Plus a variety of international candies, sauces, spices, frozen goodies, fresh produce & fish, clothing items, pretty dinnerware, specialty cookware, world musical instruments, the list goes on! Sound overwhelming? I guess it kinda is, they sell a LOT of stuff & the place is HUGE. hehe.

I know that's a little vague, but I really can't remember all of the crazy things I bought here. It's been a while since I've visited them... probably close to a year, mostly because I moved further northwest, which made it a bit of a drive (especially since there was a LeeLee nearby) & now, I'm out of the state completely, so yeah. But I totally recommend them, even if you aren't looking for anything specific! Just go browsing here, it will cure your boredom & I'm sure you'll find something you like or want to try. :D

This review is for the 17th St Market Grill, the market's brilliant new addition. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am - 5pm, you'll find a mobile catering unit parked directly in front of the market. Today they had a 2-for-1 special on all offerings and today's special sandwich was a catfish po'boy for $4.00.

The menu is short: Rock'n Burgers, cheeseburgers prepared from custom-ground beef, chili cheese dogs,  BBQ pulled-pork sandwiches, mahi mahi tacos (2 for $3).

I heartily recommend the catfish po'boy. It's a freshly fried huge catfish filet on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, pickle and a mild cajun sauce. If they have that sandwich they next time I go, I'll request some sriracha or at least some Louisiana hot sauce, but as it was served, it was a good, hot, fresh sandwich.

Combos with chips and drink available.

Limited shaded seating at a community table and a few benches.

This writer is always disappointed by the quality of the produce here.  Despite being kept in very cold storage the produce always seems to be tired and wilted.

There are no bargains here.  In fact prices for items like olive oil and vinegars seem higher than most gourmet stores.

The owners should spend a week in Zabar's to see how this really can be done.

Even though they carry a lot of attractive ethnic items but their prices aren't so attractive.  I find a lot of their fresh goods not so fresh and on top of that, they were overly expensive.

I prefer Lee Lee's... they have competitive prices and similar goods (if not more) compared to 17th street market.  Also, they give 10% discount since they have opened back in December 2009 (still).

Boyfriend had been raving about this place for the longest time, so I was excited to check it out. Aside from a really cute, quaint interior, they stock TONS of imported and hard to find groceries. The boy is quite an anglophile, so we stocked up on bangers, rashers and blood pudding for a full english breakfast one morning, as well as some nice produce. The housewares section had an endless selection of tea sets, chopsticks, plates and bowls. I wound up with a nice handmade sling bag (orange!! yaay!!) on top of all the groceries. The prices were okay, but same as with AJ's, for imported goods you can't expect to pay the cheap price.

If you like cute, funky little places, this is for you!

edit: for those of you who are curious, blood pudding is okay -- i think it's the idea that it has blood in it that freaks me out :/ white pudding (the same thing but with no blood) is delicious!! also, rashers are extra thick bacon slices -- similar to canadian bacon. delicious!

For me, this green grocer and international dry goods store sets the curve for all stores and ranks up there with Berkeley Bowl (Berkeley, CA--it's worth a visit if you are in the area) as a supplier of food.

You will find a substantial selection of fresh vegetables and foods in an expansive fridge room. Additionally there are many Asian vegetables beyond your bok choys and Japanese eggplants. Dairy, eggs, dairy substitutes, international items (fried tofu pieces and clotted cream amongst this hodge podge), and an international selection of chocolates are also within this area.

Out in the aisles, the dry goods are both American and international, coming from a variety of countries too large to list. Whether it is pickled something-or-other or that German cookie that you have a hankering for, you might find it in their pathways. Note that their coffee and, more specifically, their tea selections are vast, as are their juices, cooking oils, dry legumes, and spices (to name only a few). Loved the local breads that they sold here!

On the far end of the store are several aisles of specialty Asian dry goods, including more ramen than you can imagine, loads of drinks (think chrysanthemum tea, creamy coffee in a can, coconut juice, and an entire aisle more), dried prawn-monsters (ok, not actually monsters, but they are pretty creepy with those beady eyes), and much more. Around the corner is a variety of bulk rices and beside the dry aisles is the butcher counter which I never made direct eye contact with.

The frozen selections are good, though I never needed much from that section. I was always amused pushing the trolly by when I would see the frozen whole durian and the funny British meat pies.

In addition to the foodstuffs, 17th Street Market is a purveyor of music and musical instruments, international items for gift or decoration, childrens' toys, toiletries, and accouterments related to food, cooking, and kitchen.

My favorite time to shop was Saturday mornings or afternoons, when there would always be a representative from a different company that sold their goods at the Market presenting samples and answering questions accompanied by live musical entertainment. Such an enjoyable way to shop.

At the heart of it all, I think this shop is about the vision of the owner or operator to run a place that offers a huge variety of interesting and quality goods at a fair price to the customer all while having fun. It is a place that someone obviously cares for, and it really shows. They are doing something they love and I--along with a bunch of other people--are lucky to know about it. Check it out and have an adventure while you get your groceries!

The only downside when we walked into the produce area it smelled like chemicals-my friend and I were thinking perhaps they had just cleaned.

Hidden off Euclid, this place was a joy to find.  I come here for my fake crab meat and my wanton skins.  Oh, I also stop by for organic shampoo.

My Asian boyfriend comes here for Asian sauces and other ingredients that I refuse to try.  He likes this place even more than I do.

It's dark.  Like Costco dark.  The floor is like garage floor (same floor as Costco).  They have a big produce room that they keep refrigerated.  I like that room.

This place is big and has (almost) everything you could possibly want.  Except for copper strainers.  They didn't have those.

This place is impressive. Sure, there are obstacles - you have to FIND it, which is a feat in itself; you have to overcome the dubious first impression of this warehouse in the middle of an industrial district; and then you have to park without getting whacked by a gigantic truck. There are rewards in store for the tenacious, though: aisles of delicacies from nearly every continent, including a generous portion of unusual Asian items. It's not hard to come out with a bag full of baked tofu, clotted cream, fresh fava beans, rosewater, locally baked bread, gunpowder tea and "mock abalone" in a can. It's fun to just wander the aisles and pick stuff to try (though I honestly don't recommend the gummy corn).

The produce selection is extensive; not quite as varied as AJ's but definitely less expensive, and the room is refreshing on a summer day. There's an ever-changing section of dishes, household items and decor, plus a musical area. A lot of people have no idea this is here, which amazes me.

I always pick out a few items on my visits and never run out of new treats to try. They also carry...brace yourselves...KINDER HAPPY HIPPOS! Expensive at $1.29 for the cute little guy, I suck it up because, duh, they make me HAPPY!

Their produce selection is unbeatable. Sure, I shiver, but I man up because they have so much stuff I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. Also, a ton of stuff I've never even seen or heard of. (&I'm a foodie, so I know my shit.)

I am a bit spoiled. I live fairly close to Lee Lee's Oriental Market which is a MUCH newer/larger version of 17th. Regarding the the variety/quantity of Asian produce/products17th St. Market can't compete.

Ethnic foods aside, this market has a variety of specialty items--such as hot sauces, organic produce/products, vinegars, coffees, etc. Many products were local and very affordable. Great prices on purple potatoes which usually cost an arm and a leg at places like Whole Foods. (Or Whole Paycheck, whichever you prefer.) Excellent variety of specialty meats, some organic--goat, duck, bison.

Although not the most convenient location for me since I don't live downtown, I am sure I will return in the future when I am in the area.

Goodbye old friend.  The recent changes have undermined what had been unique and appealing about this store - from "treasure hidden" to "treasures removed."

Deep in the heart of the Lost Barrio, 17th Street Market is a well-known gem among Tucson's swelling ranks of ethnic markets. Shoppers not used to the slightly dingy look of truly organic and exotic fruits and veggies might be confused by their produce (yes, plaintains are supposed to be brownish),  but the true star here is the seafood. Comparable Guaymas shrimp, salmon, and grouper go for nearly twice the price at A.J.'s, and the seasoned (pun city) staff knows the difference between boiling powder and oil. I always grab a product I haven't tried, and the fun of hitting a homerun at home far outweighs the few misses (leave the frozen squid sticky buns in the case). The garlic naan mix yields a superb product, and the freezer section offers delicious Chinese entrees, Italian gelato, and tofu in every incarnation imaginable. Sulfer-free agave honey, miso candy, gourmet ramen, goat, red beans and rice mix...the aisles are divided by ethnicity and easy to navigate. Check out the Asian remedies section. These guys stock some seriously bizarre concoctions that claim to cure everything from acne to the common cold. While the smell of the place alone has cleared out my sinuses (scents from this many places were probably never meant to mingle), I'm trying the curandera section at 17th Street Market if I am ever plagues with gout or an ulcer.

I usually buy too much because there is SO much to buy. Great source for Asian cooking, super produce, interesting imported items.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news on this one.  I used to love coming here to get British and Asian food.  Until last weekend, I never had anything bad to say.  However, last weekend made me think about whether I wanted to ever come back.  The service here is good, however I am very concerned about the sanitary factor of the market.  We came in and towards the seafood section, it smelled AWFUL.  Now I know that seafood smells fishy, but not this fishy.  Quality seafood is not supposed to smell that fishy.  We skipped buying our fish from here.  I also was getting a chicken teriyaki dish (premade) in the freezer section across from the seafood area and the freezer smelled like it had rotten food in it.  I am not sure if either the freezers stopped working one night and the food went bad and they never took it out or what???  It made me cringe and I personally did not buy anything that needed to be refrigerated or frozen.  Very disappointing that I had to worry about getting sick instead of being able to buy food I love from here.  I won't be coming back.

Awesome.  Imagine a CostPlus hodgepodge of food from various world cultures, all assembled under one roof.  And not just that -- the foods are legit.   Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Vietnamese/Thai/Latino markets all under one roof here, with some other stuff as well, including jerk sauce for Jamaican jerk chicken, local Arizona hot sauces, etc.  Pretty good veggies and herbs, including Thai Basil, fresh okra, various choys, fresh bean sprouts for salads and soups, etc.  And winter melon and other delicious Asian veggies.  Not always cheap, but definitely worth it.  Oasis in the desert!

Cute little market tucked right off of euclid/toole that offers a variety of ethnic foods (fresh, frozen, spices, sauces, etc.).. They also have a fridged area in the back with a small selection of meat, soy products, dairy products, breads/pitas, vegetables and fruits. Their prices are definitely a little high (think whole foods or trader joe's) but this is one of the few places in Tucson where you can go to find dried asian noodles, just about any type of asian sauce, frozen dumplings/buns, etc. I don't live too close to Lee Lee's Oriental Supermarket up on Orange Grove so I come here if I need something right away.. Since this place is a small farmer's market type store they close around 6 or 7 which is pretty early if you have long days.. The one thing I didn't like about this place is that there were a lot of things that I couldn't find, which means that I would have to drive up north to Lee Lee's ]:
