Came here for brunch with my gfs...and it was realllly good!  Brunch is my favorite meal (with lunch/dinner/breakfast all a close second), and this place had a varied menu with items that had a bit of a twist on the traditional brunch foods.  They give a complimentary basket of freshly baked little muffins, and that won my heart over immediately.

I ordered the huevos rancheros, and the rest of the table ordered Waffle Eggs Benedict, rgular Eggs Benedict, a Ahi tuna salad, and the salmon frittata.  Everything was SOOO good!  It's also on a nice part of Montana with a lot of shops, so we were able to take a nice walk afterwards.  We also didn't have to wait for a table in the beginning...and that is a HUGE pro when you're starving on a sunday morning.

The place has an impressive menu. We had a coupon for 20% off dinner so decided to check it out.

The beer selection was a little sparse, but the menu made up for it. I had the tortilla soup with a smoked salmon salad, she had the vegetarian tostada, and he had the orange curry chicken.

My soup and salad were really, really good. The tortilla soup was especially good. You know, that kind of soup is hit or miss, but this was good. The vegetarian tostada was more like a salad with some chips, some beans a guac, and a cheese stuffed pepper. Pretty decent. The curry chicken was a surprise, though. It was just a chicken breast that (apparently) had some curry sauce on it.

We didn't get a chance to try the desert because we had a movie to catch, but this place is not short on sweets. You see them right when you walk through the front door. All sorts of sweets, if you like that sort of thing.

Oh yeah, it is a bit spendy. You are looking at about $30 per person before drinks.

I went here for lunch with a coworker the other day and I was pleased with my experience.  When you walk through the dar, there is a display case of dessert goodies, which is always exciting.  The dining area is large and spacious.

I had the Chinese Chicken Salad and it was delicious.  It came with strips of white meat chicken, wonton strips, mandarin oranges and scallions.  The portion size is very big, so it's filling!

I plan to go back and try some other things.

We got a slice of pumpkin pie to go from here and it was the sorriest looking slice of pie we'd ever seen. It was old and falling apart. We would have thought nothing of it but they charged us $6.50 for it. Totally not worth it.

Meh.

Food was bland, service was slow, menu was overpriced.  A rather big letdown, as good brunch food shouldn't be that difficult!  The complimentary muffins were the highlight of the meal.

My advice: Eat the muffins, give away the entree.

I have eaten at this place a few times, mostly because its right by my house.

Some of the staff is super friendly and welcoming, while the rest are kind of moody.
The food is super over priced for what you get.
Today I ordered a south western salad with turkey. The turkey tasted like it came from a pre packaged super market lunch meat. To boot it cost $16!

The bread they serve pre meal is a little on the stale side, probably left over from the night before. The waitress was horrible about refilling my water class. I had to wave down a bus boy to do it.

This place will always have a lot of people in it because of the location, but its worth finding some where else to dine.

During my weekly Friday breakfast this morning, I just learned that the 17th Street Cafe has changed hands.

The familiar faces are mostly gone and the pricing has changed as well.  Even though the pricing was somewhat expensive already, the new pricing is even higher and the warm neighborly customer service is somewhat missing as well.

Sadly it is time to explore some new places.

This is a great little find on Montana even if it did just change hands. I actually think 17th Street Cafe has the best burger in SaMo. though R&D is awesome as well.17th Street Cafe has the local "feel" and a menu featuring pizza, salads, sandwiches and dinner entrees.

I have always had excellent service even if the kitchen was backed up. This place does get very, very busy. However, you never feel rushed by the waitstaff. Great little consistent find!

This place is like my high school girlfriend. Every time I "go there" it is reliable and provides what I'm looking for. It's good. It's what I expect. It's laid back, but still wears designer jeans. It gained a lot of weight since we dated. Wait a sec.

Anyway, I've been here many times, but only officially moved to LA 3 days ago. This is a classic spot with a neighborhood vibe. The food is clean and good. Always four stars.

I love the food - it's delicious, wholesome, simple and lovingly prepared. The prices, however, can leave something to be desired. It's very casual and I love it for takeout but at $17 for my favorite salad it's only a rare treat for those expensive greens. The tortilla soup is another fav - it's almost like a puree.
Try the chicken avocado and grapefruit salad - it's seriously memorable.

I was absolutely starving this morning, after having travelled for pretty much the entire day before.  So, I think my eyes were way bigger than my stomach when I ordered my brunch.  While an omelette stuffed with cheese, bacon, AND potatoes sounds like a fabulous idea, I have to say it's a bit much; although surprisingly, there's not much egg accompanying the stuffing.  The waitress did warn me it would be very filling, but I had it in my head that I needed bacon.  Turns out I didn't need it that much.

I can't completely ding this place, since the coffee and service were good, and my friend seemed to enjoy her waffles hollandaise.  And, the complimentary warm mini muffins were a nice touch.

Overall, decent choice for brunch while visiting a good friend in SoCal.

Casual but really nice. Food is always really good. I've had brunch and lunch here, but do prefer lunch - their salads are really great. Healthy and full of flavor. Actually - that is how I'd describe most of their food, except the uber indulgent sweet potato fries.

There is always a wait here. No matter the day or the time. But even with the crowd - the staff is super nice.

This is a popular place. I like the food a lot. Breakfast: The portions are big so you could get one continental breakfast and a regular entree to share. I like getting half OJ & half cranberry juice. Lunch & dinner are very good too.  It is busy, loud and the service can be rushed. But,this is one is on the yes list.

Excellent food + noisy + rushed service = three stars.

Here is yet another place to get sweet potato fries!! I swear this is a trend more than frozen yogurt in LA!!

So yes, Dave C. and my friend Amanda and I all got an order of sweet potato fries here as an appetizer to our brunch. I mean how can you say no to a basket of of sweet sweet goodness?? And they were pretty good....still no father's office style, and I wish these fries came with some sort of sauce other than the usual ketchup. Sweet potato fries are special potatoes so they need to come with a special sauce! :)

We waiting about 20 minutes for a table on a saturday morning brunch, so not so bad, and this place is way bigger on the inside than it looks. There is even a little nook like area inside which is cuter than sitting in the main area next to what looks like fake bricks and retirement home paintings on the wall ha.

BUT food is why you go out to brunch anyway....I got their waffle bendict!! How fun does that sound? I bet you haven't had it before! Yup, I was excited too, hence why I ordered it! It was a little messy and a little hard to make sure your waffle had a little bit of everything on it, but it was pretty tasty and VERY FILLING. It is like a nice breakfast version of Roscoes!!

Amanda was not too happy with the salmon fritatta special she ordered...I tried a bite too and it was just so so so so so so so so so salty from actually having TOO much salmon in it! Most places are skimpy on the pricey part, but not these place, but it was just a little too salty for our tastes. BUT it did have capers! Which is confetti for your mouth :)

Dave C got the blue corn huevos rancheros which were pretty big too (gotta love big portions) and he definitely finished everything on his plate! And they give you a decent amount of guac here too!

Oh ya, a free plate of tasty muffins comes at brunch too! Hooray for a freebie!

p.s. come here for brunch....the dinner menu is kinda pricey for the ambiance here i think....

Shhh!  Don't bother the movie stars, this is their neighborhood restaurant.

We've always enjoyed 17th St. Cafe, for it's casual but classy atmosphere and it's refreshing menu.  It's just a fun, California style restaurant, with excellent basic food.  It's not 5-star presentation, but it's good.  With excellent service.

And spotting the stars who consider it their local favorite (at least half the times we've been there) makes it interesting.

This past Sunday a group of first timers, myself included, decided to hit up 17th Street Cafe for some post run brunch.
After a long run, we are non judgmental and will eat just about everything.  With that mindset, most brunch locations are always 5 stars. 17th though, it was ehhh...

The inside atmosphere was squished. If seated in the main dining area you will most likely feel claustrophobic or as though you can't have a private conversation with your meal buddy. This is due to them putting as many tables as possible in a smallish space. I can appreciate a good business mind and ways to make more money (i.e. more tables, more customers at once, more turnover, more money) however, at the expense a comfortable meal, I'll pass. Remove a table or two, space things out and let us talk!
On the plus, the food was very fresh and tasty. We ordered Eggs Benedict on a Waffle, the first time I've ever seen that menu option. It was delicious! The fruit was fresh and potatoes well seasoned.
In addition, their coffee selections are wonderful and served to perfection!
The downer to these positives are the over priced meals. For two people who ordered one entree to split and two coffees'... $32.00, a bit steep.  My friend wanted to order a turkey sandwich.  After seeing it was $13.00, he passed and went for eggs.

All in all, if you don't mind dishing out a couple extra bucks, chancing that you may not be sat the less crowded side room but do want a tasty meal, swing on by!

Good breakfast here. Good brunch, too. Nice afternoon lunch. I probably wouldn't come here for dinner, if it's even open then.

Totally something for everyone. Slightly pricey, but that comes with the neighborhood. Good coffee, local feel. Pleasant inside!

I've been here three times in three years, and every time I go, I forget -- not a very diverse crowd, everyone is ultra-white (with your occasional asian person here and there); needless to say, the lack of diverse audience doesn't prevent the food nor environment from bein' fine.

Really quite little place. Went on a Monday night, seated right away..were only about 4 other ppl in the whole place.

Had the chicken, avocado (everything i eat here in CA has it on it! not complaining!) and grapefruit salad. Was perfect and not too heavy, but a good size portion.

Good bread, too! Yum! And sweet potato fries. Another thing CA loves. (Fathers Office sweet potato fries are better tho!)

Would love to go back and try other things..

What a charming and cute place!  I brought a friend here for Mother's Day brunch and we both really enjoyed the experience.  The decor makes the place seem very cozy despite the fact that it's actually pretty spacious.

There were so many tasty options for brunch we had a hard time deciding what to eat.   As others have mentioned, they start you off with a basket of muffins which are quite tasty.

Service was good, I found it easy to find street parking and as a bonus it's on that great strip of Montana Avenue with all the cute shops.  So after brunch you can do some shopping and make a full day of it.

Nice nice nice.

When you go, take in the nice break from your day.  Look around, you'll see people really enjoying themselves.  Order something that you would normally avoid because it is bad for you.  Lots of butter or cream, or too much sugar, etc.  They are famous for breakfast.  I loves me the breakfast here.  No matter what I order, it is good.

They make food with care here.  If you don't like something let them know and it will be made your way.  That's my advice if you go often, otherwise, like I said, kick your shoes off (not literally, you are still on Montana), nobody wants to smell your stinky tootsies!

Enjoy!

My friend called up & asked if I would like to take a break from one of my many moving days. Since it had been @ least 10 years since we last dined here, it was due for a revisit. Nearly empty when we were seated for a 5:45 Sunday evening dinner, the dining patrons quickly overflowed into a standing room only establishment.

B. ordered the chicken/spinach cheeseless ravioli with tomato sauce. It was served with beautifully cooked broccoli & carrots. She asked them for artichoke hearts & they complied. She liked it so much she ordered a 2nd helping without the vegetables. The bread she said, was very good.

As for me, I had the chopped grilled vegetable salad. They honored my request, "no balsamic vinegar please".  The taste was superb, a huge salad that left me feeling better than ever for hours afterward. This would be a good meal to eat prior to boarding a plane, as it sat in my stomach without any complaints.

We admired the nature photographs on the wall. However both of us so satiated, neither of us had room left to muster up the courage to order from next door's Pinkberry!

the muffin basket and the tulips on the table were perfect preludes to the 2 big catfish soft tacos' delicious showdown.

however, underneath the pretty cajolement of voluntarily splitting the (only) dish we ordered for us was an uninformed $2 surcharge--what!! like a splitting equivalent of a corkage fee?--there's not even a word for it! "splitage" sounds like broken ribs. anyways, listen up dear sheep-coated  green-eyed waitress of ours victimized by venture selfishism: if refilling water or putting leftovers in a takeout box is part of your complimentary service, such a basic favor should also be. because restaurant business is not insurance where you stare at a never-ending list of things to find out what's covered. because love is free!!!

I used to come here with my cousin for lunch every Thursday. Like clockwork. We're friendly, low key, and tip beautifully. The food was consistently terrific. But something was missing. Then I realized that no matter how much of a "regular" I was, the same waitress we always had, the same hostess who always sat us...well, they looked right through us. They continually greeted us as if they'd never seen us before.

So we took our business to Houston's. And that big, ugly chain restaurant has a host who knows us by name. But back to 17th Street.

Yes, I still love to come here once in a while. And when I do, it's gotta be for the Chopped Vegetable Salad with Salmon (ask for it a bit undercooked) and dressing on the side.

If I had only gone to 17th Street for breakfast, I think I would've given it 4 or 5 stars... but my wife and I went once for dinner and wow, what a different experience.

Not awful, by any means, but definitely not to the caliber of their breakfast items.  Not only was the menu not as strong as their breakfast menu, the evening chefs are below par with their culinary skills.

Maybe it was just the night we went... I don't know... but after dozens of breakfasts there, one dinner has kept us from going back for nearly a year... and we live a couple of blocks away.

So... 3 stars for the great breakfast...

I wasn't quite in the breakfast food mood when we had brunch here, but the grilled veggie and herb whole wheat pizza totally hit the spot.  The veggies were so fresh and it all tasted way too good to be a healthy entree!

My friend had the huevos rancheros, which looked awesome as well.  I was also a big fan of the warm bran muffins they brought to our table when we first sat down...i could have easily eaten the entire basket if I wasn't trying to save room for the pizza!

I've passed this place during visits and it always seemed happening. The  large glass windows made it very inviting and a few of us decided to have lunch here today.

One of the guys we were with has been here many times because of the food. And the food was good. I had the Spaghettini, which came with grilled chicken, sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese in a red tomato sauce. The other two people I were with were also satisfied with their meals... healthy, fresh and tasty.

The main issue was the service! It was pretty bad. Thank god they've got the food going for them. But our server was not attentive at all and couldn't even remember to bring water when we specifically asked for it. When it came time for the bill, we put down a credit card and they brought us back the wrong card with the wrong bill to sign. It literally took a good 15-20 minutes to sort it all out. And they weren't the least bit sympathetic. That was the most frustrating part. Sure we all make mistakes but at least apologize!

Anyway, the food was good enough to give it another shot. Hopefully it's better the second time around.

One of my favorite breakfast places!  I've come here many times for breakfast and once for dinner.  Service is always very good -they're friendly and attentive.  The breakfast menu is pretty extensive and they're very accomodating to changes in the menu.... my favorites are the grilled veggie salad, and the chocolate chip pancakes.  The complementary muffins that they provide are also very delicious (even if they are wheat!)   The one downside is that their coffee is very weak....

This is also a good place to see celebs.  Last time I was there for breakfast (06/28/08), Don Cheadle and the guy who plays Sayid (from Lost) were also there...

Excellent place to enjoy a nice evening with a small group of your friends or significant other.

We had heard about this place initially through Yelp, and found most reviewers raving about their brunch/breakfast.  On the contrary, we decided to give them a shot for dinner and see what that's like.

The Food:
Fresh, large portions, and tasty!  I would recommend the steak salad!  Some of my friends tried their fish entrees and steak entree, the halibut was very tender and flavorful, the salmon was pretty yummy, and the steak was also a hit.  We shared sweet potato fries, and those were also delightful - but the only thing missing was a nice sauce to go with the fries.

The Place:
It's cute, intimate, and features subtle, friendly decor.  It's probably nicer to try and find a seat by the window, to enjoy some of the outdoor light.  Something about it seemed a little closed off, no view here, but if you're just wanting to eat somewhere privately indoors, it's a cozy, more mature, and intimate setting.

The Service:
The staff is lovely, they are courteous and cater to what you need.  We were also able to phone in flexible dinner reservations.

The Price:
I almost docked off 1 star for the $$$ that you can expect to pay here.  But keep in mind, it is Montana, and like many of the high-end stores found on this street, you are paying for high-end food.   If you're not the type of person to pay the extra cash for a worthwhile meal, I'd suggest you skip 17th Street Cafe.  But if you're like me and don't mind forking over the extra $ once in a while as long as your tummy's happy, then go for it!

Now that dinner's got my vote, next time I'd like to see what's good for breakfast!

After winning lunch at a charity auction with Ms. Margulies (yes, the one from ER), she and her assistant took me to this tasty cozy locale in the middle of Montana St. I remember her telling me about "Snakes on a Plane" even though I knew nothing of it before it hit the theaters.

I don't remember what we got exactly, but I believe I got the cafe club sandwich and she got the grilled tuna salad. I do remember that it was delicious, especially the excellent sweet potato fries! The dishes are a bit expensive, but she covered the bill with her American Express. What a lady!

Last time I actually sat in and had brunch was a few years ago for and while it was pretty good, what really makes it memorable are the free banana date mini muffins they served warm while you wait. So good, in fact, that I always come by just to pick up some mini muffins and they're happily sitting in my fridge right now. They're delicious when they're warm and not as greasy (probably because they ARE on Montana) so they can be a teeny bit dry sometimes, which is perfect to top with butter if you so prefer. Buying them out is CHEAP, too. 25cents/mini muffin. I don't know anywhere else with such a deal!

So disappointing! I paid $25 for two mini pumpkins and a few potatoes. It's pretty much Coco's food at five times the price. I had a piece of boysenberry pie that was outright lame. I'll never go back.

The tortilla soup is one of the greatest creations ever.

The employees are a bit dumb when doing takeout (I havent ever actually eaten IN the restaurant, always takeout).

The great thing about Montana Ave eating is that there are restaurants that fit nearly every genre of cuisine one could crave, and no one does California Fresh (my own term - shut it) better than 17th Street.

Their specials are always creatively designed showcasing seasonally inspired (sometimes local) legumes and well prepared proteins that together or alone inspire the palate.  The standard menu never forgets the dishes that have made them a local's favorite.

I've never been disappointed with anything I have ordered here and the service has always been good to great.  While some find it pricey, I feel it's standard for its location and over all presentation.

I  *love* the Balsamic Grilled Salmon at 17th St Cafe. Those who know me can vouch I rarely order the same thing twice (let alone go to the same restaurant) and well I haven't ever been able to resist the Balsamic Salmon.

Soooo when my friend suggested brunch at 17th St. I was intrigued, and pleasantly surprised. I had the Benedict Waffles. 2 poached eggs, canadian bacon on top of 2 waffle squares. I asked for hollandaise on the side. While a simple dish, I rarely see these in combination. I love savory and sweet paired together and this was the best of both worlds!

My friend had the burger (which was monstrously tasty though I think Father's Office is still better) and for $.50 more you get sweet potato fries. Now these fries do rival Father's Office. SOOOO fresh hot crunchy on the outside, sweet and tender inside. I looked around the restaurant and multiple tables knew to order the sweet potato fries. You should too. You won't be disappointed (unless you don't like yams - hehe).

Great breakfast joint here. Really cozy atmosphere with casual service. The place was empty mid-week during late morning, and it was perfect. The food was really fresh. My omelet was delicious, not too over or under cooked, which the perfect amount of filling and potatoes to get you full, but not over the top. It's a perfect location on montana and great for a nice, refreshing breakfast.
