Loud plasmas everywhere, predominantly male crowd, overpacked sardine-like...I'm not one to visit such venues, but my bud Jaime wanted to enjoy some good beer & watch the Lakers' playoff game. So, after some great sushi next door we popped in here.

We sat in a comfy booth in semi-darkness. Laughter & yelling in baritone surround-sound. The scent of testosterone filled my senses.  I was pumped & ready to drink some good ales. Their list was extensive, with beers & ales from across the globe. Jargon to me, but my friend is a connoisseur. He recommended a Chimay, so I tried it and loved it.

The game was pathetic. Oklahoma killed the Lakers by 30 points. People were hating on Kobe, but the beer & ambiance was worth it.

The next beer I tried was a dark stout with chocolate undernotes. Quite delicious with its cocoa-flavored foam, but so thick & filling. Yummers!!

My poor friend got a parking ticket for not feeding the meter on time. I offered to pay half ( cuz he's a cheapy :) ), but he declined my offer.

It was a swell evening, nonetheless, and I'd love to return again.

Whats not to love? A good beer selection with plenty of craft brews on tap.  Free Pizza during happy hour.  Comedy shows, The game is on.  Outdoor patio seating where you can soak up the neighborhood and relax.

    Okay it all sounds good...except.

The Bartenders are really really really REALLY bad.

Yea they are bad.  They just seem disconnected from the establishment.  A place like this needs a regular bartender that everyone knows and loves.  The bartenders that usually man the bar are clueless and seem like they are just "filling in."

Here is what you get.  Horribly poured pints.  Beers where half the glass is foam.  Watching the bartenders try to pour your drink by pouring it into multiple glasses and pouring them back in forth into one glass to get a finished product.  Its kinda sad.  It sometimes take 10 minutes just to get a drink because the bartenders keep messing up.  They pour a pint and then leave it behind and serve other people.

I hate to be harsh, but this has the potential to be a prime destination in Los Feliz.  Please train the bartenders.

I'd love to write a good review of Public House, because in theory it should be a great place. But in practice.....

I went on Sunday for their "free pizza with a drink before 7" offer. The place was packed and it was unbelievably sweltering hot, as they clearly had no interest in wasting money on AC. My friend waited in line for 45 minutes (including 15 at the front of the line without being acknowledged once), only to be told at exactly 7 that the offer was no longer good.

While the barbacks and one other bartender hustled like crazy, the girl manning the register was a waste of space. She was utterly useless dealing with the crowd, and once that died down, she spent the entire time flirting with two customers and overtly ignoring anyone who actually needed a drink. If the tip were going directly to her, I would not have tipped at all (which I have done only twice in my life). When I asked to see a manager, she rolled her eyes, said no manager was working and walked away.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of accidentally leaving my ATM card at the bar. When I came back to get it, I found that they had charged me $67 for 3 well shots and 1 order of potato skins. On top of that, they had illegally charged my card an extra 18% gratuity. That's right - 80 bucks for a few (poorly made) shots & a couple of burnt potato skins.

This bar is in a great location and has all the potential in the world. Unfortunately, the staff seem to want to make up for the money they don't get for their inedible food by ripping off customers. I'm really looking forward to when someone else takes over Public House and runs it correctly.

This place just FEELS dirty. I have no idea if it is nor not, but it feels unclean. Further, you have to stand in one of two awkward lines at the bar to order your food. Then you go back to your table where an angry busser throws the food down at you like he's got better things to do. Heaven forbid if you need a condiment.

Some of their food is pretty good. The salmon and cauliflower puree come to mind. Some of it, not so much. Especially the sandwiches. None of it tastes creative or good. I love some good bar food, but this isn't it. It makes me think of an amateur chef who wanted to make some bar grub for his friends, so he went to Ralph's bought some stuff and made food. It's not quite as good as you'd get from the real restaurant. A cheap imitation, if you will.

Also, this is a minor complaint, but their Diet Coke tastes off-brand. Like they're serving me RC Cola and trying to pass it off as Diet Coke. -1 star just for that.

Recently visited this joint for the first time this past weekend, and while i was impressed with the beer selection on tap ... that's about all i was impressed with.

the service was horrid, and the enviorment was murky.

Will i go out of my way to visit 1739 again? NO
If i'm in the area will I stop in for a drink? Possibly, but I now know not to have high expectations (or any expectations ) at all if i return

Went here to watch the Kings game. Had the burger it was GOOD add some beer (many/great selections) and this place is my new hangout spot. The only problem is that you have to order food at the bar but they are making next door into a sports bar and the current place will be for fine dining from what i was told.

This place is great to stop in for a beer. Huge selection of brews from all over the world. They also have a great happy hour where you get a free pizza with a beer... Pretty cool.
Down side... I'd the bar is packed it is nearly impossible to get a drink... I know that is many bars but this one is especially difficult.
They also have some outside seating and six bug screen tvs for the sports fans.

Before venturing into this joint on a weekday night, I committed myself to keeping an impartial perspective of 1739. For as many of you are aware, 1739 is infamous for having one of the most "questionable" services in the Loz Feliz Region.  Within five minutes of my visit, that notoriety reared it's ugly head from the behind the bar.

Let me give you the backdrop, the joint was barely half-filled when I entered with empty seats scattered about. Perch myself at the middle of the bar assuming that I had obtain some prime real estate (both seats next to me where vacant). However for the next few minutes I was all but non-existent to not one, not Two, but THREE bartenders (props to the Count for the math lessons on Sesame Street). Made cordial attempts to get each bartender's attention (after all, you never want to be an A-hole with your bartender -- it's just etiquette) but to no avail. I had to grab the attention of the bar-back just to get some service.

When I painfully obtained service, I asked for a delirium tremens,  the pour was lackluster -- an inch thick of foam and a glass three-fourths filled (in fact, this happened on the consecutive round with a different bartender). This may impart had to do with the staff's I.Q. or the fact that the keg tabs are not regularly cleaned on a consistent basis. Don't get me wrong, the bartenders are great eye candy but they have no talent when it comes to their profession -- think Jessica Alba. For a moment, I thought I was being single-out, but I witness two patrons ask for a menu on the other side of the bar; the bartender walked over with a "who the F-are you" glare and toss the menu over to them (you can't make this ish up people).

Aside from the poor excuse of what they label service here, an assortment of flat screens overplay a variety of games from the professional to collegiate levels (including European futbol). Lounge couches and outdoor seating arrangements are available for the non-sports enthusiast as well. 64(+) beers are advertised on the menu, but it doesn't appear their menu is regularly updated. For instance, Newcastle Werewolf Ale which is generally offered during the Halloween season was on tab... just two days away from New Year's Day peeps!

The only thing keeping the joint above One Star waters: All beers on tab are listed at $6.50 a pint & free cheese pizza with your purchase of brew during happy hour. A golden rule of thumb, never turn down free FSA (Food. Sex.  Alcohol).

They have a good selection of beers (sure why not Allagash Black) and the burger I had during happy hour was pretty good.  They had the game on (Lakers).

It seems as though it'll be closing down soon and opening up something similar next door and this space will become a wine bar.  This explains the unusually nice bathroom for a sports bar.

If you want a real beer for a change and even a little knowledge on the many varieties out there. The best part is : buy two beer and get a free cheese pizza. I can only caution those who try many beers , take it easy. With some between 7 and 9% 'tis better to walk than drive.  HAPPY HOUR ALMOST ALL DAY. English people like that, as we spend half the day in them

They get 3 stars because it wasn't super crowded and I could sit down (the only thing I really care about at a bar) :) I tried the Tangerine beer and I liked it, I would get it again. Free pizza during happy hour is awesome. I'm super socially awkward so I didn't ask for one until the special was over, but I did have a slice of my friend's pizza and it was good, thin crust cheese pizza. I had the wings, nice spicy bbq sauce, not bad at all. The bartender wasn't super friendly, but whatever.

    Excellent selection of beer.

The service is horrible.  It's not a friendliness thing, it's the ability to serve.  Horrible pours, 10 minute waits at the bar on weeknights, and the management is just bad.

Also, this is just a small thing: but I find it annoying when my beer is taken off my table even though it's not finished.  Sure it's only a swig or two, but i paid for the damn thing!  And for the amount of TV's in the place, it seems they're trying to be a sports bar.  EXCEPT, they only seem to have 1 or 2 different channels on at one time.  So it kinda falls in between a sports bar and a hip beer bar....

It's really unfortunate that  a place with good food and great beer can be such a bummer to go to. I have to say, of all the places that I go to on the east side, 1739, hands down is the most notorious for it's horrible service.

I can't help but to find myself going here for a good beer or a free pizza at happy hour, but I ALWAYS leave disappointed. Bar service needs some great improvement before I recommend this place to friends and visitors over other beer bars in the neighborhood.

I could recommend the pizza and shepherds pie though, just don't be surprised when it takes and hour to order.

This place is a sure thing if you are inviting someone out for a drink and you have no idea what they are really into and so you don't want to go to an awkwardly over-stylized place. That being said, the charm of Public House tends to wear off with repeat visits but if you can ignore the awful drunk girl whose boyfriend keeps giving her money to play Edwin McCain and Matchbox 20 on the jukebox then you'll be alright.

    Drinks
Their beer selection really is impeccable and also reasonably priced. The bartenders even are knowledgeable as to which beer is supposed to go in what type of glass but they could be faking it because I have no idea. Surely they aren't. Their mixed drinks are always poured strong and are a reasonably price as well.

    Happy Hour
Any drinks you order during happy hour come with a free cheese pizza. I always appreciate businesses that give their guests amazing deals. So, thank you Public House.

    Scene
The environment here is hopeful, yet problematic. The bar has a lot of variables for seating options: inside, outside, booth, table, high top, bar, or secluded area. That is definitely great but Public House tends to have a comedy night or trivia night or something like that that seems to be there every time I go on a weeknight and it gets inescapably crowded. Sports fans will rejoice that this place is decked with TVs so that you can pretend to be interested in what someone is saying but you are really looking over their shoulder at the score.

If all else fails and you don't like the place, there are several other bars within one block. I'd say it's worth a shot.

Never had bad service here, I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about.

I do think the beer selection is excellent.  But for anybody who's paying attention, the prices are an incredible rip-off UNLESS you get a free pizza at happy hour.  I know this is L.A., but $6.75 for a pint of beer is offensive.  (somehow Dillon's manages $3 per pint)

Been going to this place for about 3 years now, always a good experience. The best time is 3-7pm, you get a free pizza with a beer. The pizza is a cheese pizza but actually very good. As most people said, the beer selection is awesome and changing often. The food on the main menu is surprisingly good and inexpensive. Beers are not cheap, but there are so many interesting/exotic beers, it's worth it. Seating isn't a problem until later in the night, and they have large TVs above the bar showing different sport games at the same time.

This place has let my friends and I down continually, yet a few continue to return for their lame trivia night. There is a constant rotating door of bartenders, which says enough on it's own. The beers are overpriced, atmosphere sucks, and the cleaning crew actually came into the ladies bathroom to clean (men) last time I was there while girls were in the bathroom. I only returned because there was nothing else open, and I left immediately and happily to drink an oatmeal stout from my own fridge. What a shame that such a shitty place is in such an ideal location.

Came here with a group of 7 people on a Friday night around 10pm and found a table instantly. It a very hipster, very laid back type of environment. A little grungy looking but nothing that would make someone uncomfortable about being there. There are a TON of beer selections, which are fairly priced, and a great variety of food.

I ordered the meat-lovers calzone and a Woodchuck Apple Cider. Odd pairing...but it was delicious! The calzone was massive and cooked really well. Everyone in my party was pleasantly surprised with their meals and extremely happy about the beer selections.

I will be coming back with friends for some beers and some football.

There's a sign stating "Please excuse our mess." but there was no mess when it came to the facilities. One word. Plush.

If you're not familiar with the setup, you head down a hallway in the back that's shared between Public house and it's next-door neighbor. The neighboring restaurant was a cuban spot, but now it's a boarded up mystery.  It's a long walk, but it's worth it. They've recently remodeled and expanded on what was already an impressive setup. It's very modern with wall tiles that resemble carbon-fiber or maybe some sort of premium denim? Who knows, but it looks great.

Everything is new, clean, and shiny. I'd suggest getting over there before the football season heats up and the expected wear takes it's toll.

There are multiple entrances, sinks and stalls. Take a sharp right. You'll find a small powder room, complete with it's own sink and coat hook. You've also got 3 urinals of varying heights, so if it's a slow night - you have your choice. Try them out and decide which fit is right for you.

Finish up and head back to the bar for a Dogfish Head.

This is my first 3 star review! Cheers to me. I wanted to give this a 2... but I do end up going here a lot after work. And let me tell yah why friends.

~ The beer selection is fantastic.
~ The food is pretty good and reasonably priced
~ Happy hour beer and a pizza, can't beat that.
    ~ It's nearby where I work

Why only 3 stars? Why did I want to give it 2 stars?

~ Sometimes, it smells like a gym. Like there is some spilled beer and sweat somewhere, behind some things, that just isn't getting cleaned.

~ It's way to loud. I really think they could turn the music down a few notches and people would still come.. heck, maybe some people would come back more often if they didn't have to yell across the table to their friends. ( I don't understand why bars and clothing stores need to have their music so flippin loud )

~ Some of the bartenders were hired cuz the boss liked how they looked me thinks, meaning, depending on who's working, will depend on how fast you get served, or if they know what a beer tastes like...

Minus those 3 things, the place is a great little spot to get a great selection of beer some late night food and to hang with your friends.

(My SUGGESTIONS to the management) ~ Cuz I pretend it matters

Pick what you would like to be, an old Public House, where people can come, talk, drink, laugh, meet up, and have a good time. Or a sports bar where people have to get loud and obnoxious and drink and have a good time. Personally, I liked the place better when it first opened and had half as many TV's. It was classy, it was it's own little pub, it had it's thing going.. Now it seems like your trying to be a Big Wangs type bar. Granted, people are going to show up either way. And have a good time, either way. My other suggestion, take out that middle TV behind the bar and put a chalkboard with all your draft beers on it. It would fit the place better AND would be extremely helpful and not as annoying as touching that dirty ass Beer menu. :-)  Cheers!

On principal alone I want to love this place, I mean looking at their tap wall makes me know what true love is.  But for some reason in practice something doesn't quite connect.

I've been here a few times, and its a bit hit or miss.  I think it really depends on the bartenders working, and how busy the night is.  On a bad night you might wait a long time to get noticed, find out that when you do get a chance to order they don't have the beer you want, and when you finally find a beer they have available, the pour is a horrendous mixture of overflowing over the cup, and by the time the head is down to a normal amount the glass is only half filled.  On a good night, you're going to have a bevy of options, a nice bartender who gets your beer quickly that isn't sticky from the overflow.  On any night you're going to have lots of options and you can rest assured that your Chimay, Delirium, Unibroue Maudite, and many other different, quality, beers you've never heard of before,  will be $6 a glass (they chose glasses based on alcohol content we figured)

The last time I went we ordered food after being denied from other places do to how late it was.  We got a hamburger and mac & cheese.  The food was completely edible, and the mac & cheese was actually very tasty.

As far as I know they don't have a minimum on credit cards, and there tends to be plenty of seating for you.

All in all, don't go with super high expectations of a fancy well decorated bar, with fancy cocktails, and high brow bartenders who will muddle fresh produce to go in your cocktail.  Every time I've gone there are only attractive girl bartenders, so to make a generalization about their hiring practices, they forgo expertise for looks, but they have $6 beers, and a huge draft list, go here for beer, and someplace else for cocktails.

What happened to this bar? I remember going when it first opened and it was a great local pub-style place that had a ton of great beers and plenty of room for groups. Now it's a sticky, tv-screen filled mess of a college-type bar? The bartenders are girls with fake boobs and not a lot upstairs and table servers/service is absolutely lacking.
I still appreciate the beer menu, but I know better places. The free pizza during happy hour is rad (!) but their menu is pretty boring and a little too expensive for the atmosphere. I had the mac n cheese and lentil soup, and I will fully admit, I was surprised at how good both were (especially the soup). But nothing here really calls me back. Drunk sports-loving frat boys can have this place. Sad Vermont ended up letting this happen to a "pub".

Came here on a Friday night around 10, there were plenty of empty tables and places to sit, by 12AM this place was packed.

They have delirium on tap! for like $6!! SOLD! and a ton of other beers on tap to satisfy anyone.  The food is pretty mediocre at best, but when you're smashed, anything tastes good.

There's a TV in every corner and a jukebox playing everything from oldies, indie, rock, hip-hop, top 40, etc.  Come here with all your friends, they have lots of large tables to fit everyone.  It's a fun time!

P.S. I question the sanitation of this place, restrooms are dirty and there was a fly in my water, yuck!  But, I'd still come back for a good time!

If you can't find a beer you like at a bar that has 70+ on tap, you're a hipster douchebag, or someone who is fond of saying things like "Well, this is ok, but there's this one place in San Diego..." Suck it. The food is good (and it's served until 1am) and between 70 taps, 20+ bottles, and a full bar...look no further. Sure it's loud at times, but you don't go to a place like this for a hush hush conversation.

Lots of beer and room to move around. It's connected to the tequila bar next door... somehow.

I had one interaction with a rude bartender, but otherwise it's been OK. Hipster-ish crowd.

The happy hour is kind of a joke. The free little pizza is cool, but there's no drink offers really, except for a few draft beers which always seem to be "out of order" during happy hour.

Street parking in the neighborhood is touch and go, but overall it's a low key place to come after work for a drink or two.

While the beer selection is decent and the place is a decent size with lots of seating, it's not nearly good enough for a place tagged here as a "gastropub".

Unless the "gastro" stands for "gastrointestinal discomfort", that is.

We came to eat and watch a game. The menus were dirty and the food was frightful, as was the service. My friends, who actually ordered before me and my husband, had to wait over 45 minutes, at which point they had to go [back] up to the bar and inquire what was up. Their order was simply forgotten!

We ordered: fried calamari, eggs Benedict, huevos rancheros. Pretty basic stuff, right?

The calamari: clearly once-frozen and pre-fried and tasted exactly like dry rubber. They must have been in a fridge for at least a few weeks. Horrible. The disgusting, watered-down Marinara sauce they came with tasted like...I don't know. I don't know what it tasted like. I'd never tasted anything like it. It felt like a footballer's idea of a Marinara sauce - dump some canned tomato sauce on the top of a canned, chopped tomato and STIR, MAN, STIR while trying to find that thing in your nose.

Huevos Rancheros: bad. That same foul Marinara sauce was inside, inexplicably. Yes, Marinara sauce inside (almost bean-less) Huevos Rancheros. Were they trying to pass it off as salsa? Probably. We asked for some hot sauce to try and cover up the taste, and instead of a bottle of Tabasco or Tapatillo received a little cup of what appeared to be that same insufferable marinara sauce with hot sauce mixed in. The eggs were served with flavorless hash browns, a slice of canned pineapple and two very sad, equally flavorless, breakfast sausages.

Eggs Benedict: the final insult. I uploaded a photo I took of them out of sheer shock. The eggs were not poached, not even fried, but either hard boiled or microwaved to a flavorless, rubbery hardness, and served on chunks of torn wheat bread, alongside rubbery, formerly frozen sausage and bacon - not at all what we were hoping for a Saturday brunch at a so-called "gastropub".

We'll definitely never attempt eating here ever again.

    A disappointment.

When I first heard about 1739, a beer bar, opening up in Los Feliz I was thrilled.  Its just what the neighborhood needed.  Well the neighborhood still needs one. Everything about 1739 Public House shows a complete lack of beer knowledge.  Yes they have a large number of taps, and as a result their taps are rarely rotated or cleaned.  If you go there in the winter they'll still have summer seasonals on tap.  Thats a sure sign that they aren't rotating out old beer.  Not only that, but when a tap is changed their taplist isn't updated.  Several beers on their taplist that I asked for were not on tap anymore, and I had to squint at all the taps just to notice what beers were actually on tap.

Ultimately its just a huge disappointment.  You put in all that money for their tap system, the least you could do is get someone in there who knows about beer.  Someone should be ordering new and interesting beers for their taps, educating their staff (some of them do know their stuff though), and making sure their beer stays and tastes fresh.  Also every beer is the same price ($6.50) whether you order a Delirium or a PBR.  Thats just ridiculous (though works in your favor sometimes).

The only reason to ever go here is for the free pizza during happy hour, or because you can't go anywhere else.  I stop in every once in a while to see if they've improved at all.  When/if they do I'll update my review.

I must have been drunker than I thought last time I ate here.
The chicken wings leave a lot to be desired. Only eat here after your 4th or 5th beer and even still, avoid the chicken wings.

While having a juke box is cool, having a bunch of losers pick the music selection is not. I guess I normally am here when the music is off and the big game is turned up. Time to find another local pub to watch baseball games...

When I walked into this place for the first time,
the reggaeton in the next room almost rattled the teeth out of my head.

Everywhere I turned I saw a milfopotamus adorned with far too little fabric.
Curse the maniac that invented one-size-fits-all.
    I was genuinely frightened.
Partly for the fear of  the deception of beer goggles,
mostly for the fear of a stampede if someone yelled bacon.
    Zero stars.

    But I digress.

I picked up the beer menu....
I was in a state of shock and arousal as I gazed upon the taps.

Such an array of quality taps and hardly a sophisticated palate in the house to dry up the good ones.

Most of these philistines were drinking Heineken and Amstel Light.

Belgian godliness, DogFishHead madness, SoCal hoppiness...
Someone really knows what they're doing.
Yes, the taps are as clean and well-maintained as the Virgin Mary's vajayjay if she was Brazilian.
    5 stars.

I started with the Buffalo Stout...
since I was apparently where the buffalo roam
and this is not an easy beer to find.

How the Belgians can turn every beer they touch into a work of high art still amazes me.

This is not a bad locale per say. For the Vermont Ave 'scene', it is tolerable. Usually full of scruffy hipster types and those who enjoy sports viewing, a HUGE beer selection and a fun happy hour (free pizza with two drink purchases daily).

However, the bartenders SUCK. This past Friday there were FOUR female 'bartenders' (not that gender matters, but for authenticity sake) that were serving perhaps 30 total people in the whole place (it was about an hour after the Lakers game completed so it had cleared out) and our group did not even get a look that we had been seen or noticed as we are STANDING AT A NEAR EMPTY BAR. Either they are brain dead or just have absolutely NO bartending skills whatsoever. The icing on the shitsola cake was that my friend and I each gave them a ten spot for our 6 dollar drinks and they KEPT THE CHANGE. First of all that is very unprofessional, second of all they deserved a 25 cent tip, if that. Maybe less.

Owners of the Public House: clean YOUR house if you want to keep your customers coming back.

A group of 16 of us (whom were later joined by 4 more) came running in here around 10:30 on Saturday night. We were all freezing and wet but we were immediately mellowed by the cool (warm) vibe inside. I don't remember being carded at the door (and I was never carded inside) so that was a bit odd but we were all over 21 so maybe we just looked old or something. And really, I don't care.

The bartenders were friendly and super efficient. I never waited for more than a minute to be acknowledged or more than 5 minutes for a drink. And, even as the night grew on and I grew intensely inebriated the bartender ladies never told me to stop hitting on them. Which was nice. And though I wrote love notes for them on pieces of paper and left my phone number for one of them on every surface, they never made me feel as pathetic as I realized I was the next morning. Ah Alcohol. I spent over $100 that night but I did buy drinks for a few strangers at the bar. Eventually Ted started calling me "baller" because for whatever reason I was very loose with my wallet that night. (My bank account did not appreciate that the next day). To all those boys that I bought drinks for, you are welcome.

I do remember drinking the following (this list is in no particular order and is missing a few things):

    a shot of Makers
    3 buttery nipples
    kamikaze
    french martini
stranger's drink (he kissed my hand and talked to me in French while I drank his drink without asking)
    an Adios
something with gin and ginger ale

    Things I lost this night:

    my dignity.
    my shirt.

I think you can see now that this was a very wonderful night. I would recommend you giving this bar a shot as well.

P.S. Kami. If you are reading this, I am SO sorry.

I stopped in here for a bite and a beer.  I was blown away by their beer selection.  80 on tap!

I had a tuna melt and wedge salad... both were generous portions and tasted great.  The tuna melt was the best I've had in a while!

I was there on a Monday night and it was fairly crowded at the bar but plenty of seating away from it.  There was some kind of amateur comedy night that provided some entertainment.. not bad for a free show.

I plan on coming back to 1739 Public House next time I'm in the area!

    Lots of Bulls fans? Check.

Fun place that's not too douche-y or frat-y for watching sports? Check!
