You'll find me here at least once a week on my laptop working on a paper or reading. Yes, the decor is a bit boring, but I like the fact there's enough outlets, it's quiet and the staff is very friendly. Also, it's free WI-FI - that's a big plus. The iced coffee is okay, but I do like their teas. If I feel like spending a little more I'll get an iced hazelnut latte.
Lately, It's been a pain though since their restroom is out of order. FAIL.
But, I like this place. As mentioned above it's chill, quiet and I know I can get work done. -

17 Bleecker is yet another one of those places that I never would have found if not for Yelp. I was wandering the East Village last Thursday and decided to scope out the place to see if it'd be a good writing spot for me. Unfortunately, it left a lot to be desired.
What it lacks in space, it does not make up for in charm. There were no paintings up when I went, and the light green paint made the place seem so uninviting. I agree with other Yelpers who described 17 Bleecker as "drab" - I couldn't imagine getting very much work done here, although the five laptop-addled people who were there might disagree. Even aside from the less than desirable lighting (I prefer lots of natural light), there simply isn't much here to inspire.
On the plus side, the service was friendly and my chai latte was nice and hot, but I didn't try any of their baked goods (I smuggled in my Mexican brownie from the Treats Truck). The music selection is courtesy of whoever is working there, which I realized once the shifts changed (one ipod was replaced with another).
As a pit stop for a hot beverage and snack, it might do in a pinch, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to come back here. The free wi-fi bumps it up to 2.5 stars. -

This is a sleepy little neighborhoody caf with free WiFi where local bohemians (or not) can grab a pastry, get caffeinated, and write some Yelp reviews all in the same spot.
There's very little signage or awning, so it's lucky that the name of the business is the same as the address, or no one would be able to find it!
Get off the 6 train at Bleecker station and head East for about two blocks. It's on the north side of the street. -

Though this place isn't much to look at, it has a lot going for it (if you're a writer). Free wifi, a decent number of outlets, both table/chair and couch options, and it isn't overrun with NYU students.
The 17 Bleecker folks didn't spend a lot on decor or ultra-comfy chairs. But what they do have is serviceable, and that's really all I ask. The place is on the small side, but not cramped or ridiculous. I could even see bringing a group of writers here for a writing day under the right circumstances.
They're open every day until 11pm, which isn't as late as I would like but, again, not insulting like 8 or 9. Busy times are 3 - 6PM both weekdays and weekends, so if you can get here before that, you can beat the crowd.
I'm not thrilled about the price of drinks and food. It's a little high. But for this neighborhood, expected. Unexpected: Cash Only. I don't understand how coffee shops in this day and age can get by without having a credit card machine. Really now.
Bonus points for being near the B/D/F/V/6 trains.
I like 17 Bleecker a lot and look forward to spending many weekday evenings writing here, possibly with other Yelpers! -

Coffee, Friendly staff, Free wifi and fairly quiet. I didn't have a problem finding a power outlet for my laptop.
The only minus is the atmosphere/decor... kinda makes me depressed after spending a few hours here. I'm not really sure why... hmm... Maybe because it's what I would imagine a nice prison's arts and crafts/activity room to look like in the 1970's. ha... random. -

I stumbled past this place today while looking to kill some time in the area in any place other than a Starbucks.
I don't know what some of the other reviewers are talking about. I love this place! I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't so hot in there that I was forced to strip off every layer I had on.
First of all, let me talk about the music they were playing. It was the most perfect chill out or do some work jazz and blues.
I've just come back from New Orleans and they played a lot of the type of music you hear down there.
It sounded at times like they were actually playing old records. So super great!
There are plenty of tables and some couches to spread out on. I think the decor is a maybe a little sparse, i wouldn't go as far to say drab like some other people commented. I like the tin ceiling a lot and the painting in the back is pretty interesting.
Always good to know about, free wi-fi. I would recommend charging your computer before you get there if you plan on working on your laptop. I only noticed one plug.
I love the bookshelf with the globe and the Buddha's and the crazy head with a skull cap on and I especially like the books for exchange (bring a book, take a book)... reminds me of the cafes I'd go to on my travels
And there's chess if you feel like getting a game on. I saw some very cute boys to play with.
The coffee is just fine, the pastries looked good but I wasn't hungry so I didn't try any.
There is no sign outside, just the number 17.Listed in: Gotta get my caffeine fix...

Good music, good coffee, ample space but not exactly cozy, tiny bathroom, fun jar-like mugs, friendly, chess and books, free wi-fi! There's table seating, bar seating and a couch in the back.

I did a small poetry reading here with a friend of mine that plays music here every month. I did have fun reading my work in a cafe, but it was a little empty on a Saturday night. I was told that the emptiness was surprising because it's usually crowded. Anyways, I'll chalk it up to an off night. (Or, maybe all of those psychically inclined coffee drinkers knew I would be reading poetry and decided to forgo it, ha).
I really want to like 17 Bleecker a lot more than it has to offer. It has tasty (but not amazing) desserts and good cappuccinos. There are a lot of baked goods and drinks to choose from -- lots of cakes, brownies and pies. Generally, everything looked good. I had a lemon square which was good, but not anything super unique. I really did like my coffee, though
This establishment is cash only, and there are signs on the register. I had to trek over to an ATM nearby. 17 Bleecker has the potential to be so much more --- the walls are taupe colored and kind of drab. There was tons of bright, vivid paintings on the walls --- but, the artist herself came in and removed the paintings! I hope they get some art back, it really brightened the place up. To make up for this a bit, there is free wifi. And quite a few listless people on laptops to prove it. (Even the barista was online!)
This is a nicely sized space with tables, chairs and some big couches in the back. There's a neat-o Co-Op library, bring a book and you can take a book.
Another downside to the drab atmosphere and lack of patrons? The bathrooms are a little gross and tiny. Think airplane bathrooms and just make it a little dirty. Granted, I was there about two hours before closing and it was open all day. But still, it's one unisex bathroom, come on!
The food and coffee was a bit pricey, but I would like to give this place another try. Especially with more people hanging around, not only just plugging away on laptops and lattes. -

It's a friendly little coffee shop with free wifi and decent coffee. There is also a projector and screen set up in the back, so I figure they'd let you hold a group presentation there? May be good for a coworking-alternative.
The other reviewers found it bland, but I like the down-played decor. It feels functional. It has plugs, too, which is a bonus. -

Standard capp will set you back $3.45. Tasty.
Wish it were cheaper, but it's a good location and much less frenetic than the Think Coffee down the street.
Plenty of seating and free wi-fi. -

Bland but quiet, good coffee, funny decor.
What the heck is that mascot? headless sheep with camel's hump? Whatever it is, it's everywhere in there.
I also love the menu on the wall:
Round Things 3.50
Square Things 4.00
Trapezoids - market price -

This is a cute coffee place to meet friends... but probably not when it's hot outside, as they have no AC. There are about 4 seats outside, which are nice for people watching. The baristas are friendly.
Oh yeah.. and they have free wi-fi. :)
Overall, it was good. I'll be back, if I am in the area. -

Haven't been in a month or two but I'm a fan.
Free wi-fi Cheap Prices
Friendly baristas Good Coffee
Plenty of plugs Sort of bare & boring
Always a seat
Not bad though, one of the best in the neighborhood. -

People come here to read a book or to work on their laptop and drink coffee/tea - it's not a place for social gathering, so it's easy to zone out or relax. You'll find a mix of artist and corporate type.
Like the decor, their selection of coffee/tea and food is simple - nothing fancy, which keeps the prices down. Music ranges from Wilco to Jazz, depending on who is working that shift.
It's small, so you're never gauranteed a seat. -

I like dives, but 17 Bleecker is more of a dump. The drab interior, worn out wood flooring, and uninteresting furniture just don't provide the character I look for in a coffee house (I go for the experience rather than to grab a cup and run). If the beverages were exceptional, that might redeem the place. Unfortunately, both the hot and iced teas I tried were good, but not nothing special. The one thing 17 Bleecker has going for it is free wifi, but I'm afraid that's not enough for me.

POW right in the wallet! $7.50 for a mediocre spinach and feta pot pie will you make you tear up a little, but the good coffee, nice service, spacious interior, and extremely relaxed setting, makes you want to come back for more, if not simply for the solitude.

Review from Barbie L.
An okay-sized cafe with no-frills decor- think fluorescent lights, unassuming black furniture, and sort of minty-colored expanses of wall. Felt a little bare and the bathroom left something to be desired. However, the mood is very laid back, full of people with laptops and cell phones sitting around enjoying the free wi-fi (that works well by the way). Chocolate-Hazelnut Biscotti was delicious and only $1. Unfortunately the coffee's not worth it. I paid $3.25 for a rather watery cappuccino that made a poor poor companion for said delicious little biscotti.

This place always has good music, decently priced food, good coffee, and good service.
It is a good place both to go work in (free wifi, outlets, and lots of tables) and to just grab a ham cheese croissant and go.
Having this place to study and meet friends is definitely worth a $2 coffee and $2.5 muffin.
