i walk through here every day. Yes, you're likely to see a drug deal go down, the smell of piss is sometimes overwhelming, and you may see a pimp slapping a ho on occasion. But the area is heavily patrolled, and unless you're wasted by yourself at 2 in the morning, you shouldn't have much to worry about. Some of the best restaurants/spots are within a few blocks of the station. Oh, on one occasion a large crack head yelled "Faggots!" at us. Granted, I was holding my boyfriends hand.

Mission, San Francisco, CA
This is almost certainly the worst maintained and planned of the BART stations, at least those in SF. Ignoring the outspoken denizens of the plazas, the station itself often has multiple broken fare add stations and is covered with trash and unidentifiable stains. I've never heard or seen of anyone getting mugged, and the area isn't as dangerous as it looks, but it's certainly not upscale.
Worst part? No side entrance to the paid area, meaning that second entrance functions as a much longer path to the single set of entrance gates.
Time to take notes from 24th street station and upgrade this place. -

I loathe this place. The station is filthy and there are always unidentifiable puddles and smears every where.
The bike racks have carcasses of molested framework attached to them. Not reassuring in the slightest.
The attendants are rude and preoccupied and then you go up the stairs and are thrust into complete dawn of the dead. I feel like if there were a zombie apocalypse the only way I'd know the difference would be that the dejected masses that linger around this joint would actually be lunging at me instead of just falling in my path or yelling at me.
I don't understand how this continues to be such a cesspool. -
Review from Justin C.
Sure BART is amazingly efficient and a smart option for traveling around the Bay Area but this station is just dirty, stinky, and dangerous.
Only use this station during the day unless you don't have much of a choice. The neighborhood is not the best and you should keep your valuables out from the open.
Just be smart about your surrounding and travel in groups.Listed in: Avoid.

I remember stepping off into this station in 1996- I'm in the big city now. It's spectacular in a way- the grand stairs leading from deep in the subway up to the street. One could expect to emerge on something spectacular. More commonly however, it's human suffering that's fully on display. There's something good about that--to have a daily reminder that you are fortunate, and that there is much to do.

The Mission St BART Stations:
-- 16th St & 24th St are situated in one of the most dangerous areas in San Francisco. Coming here during the day is not a problem, but these areas can be pretty dangerous at night.
There is a Burger King Restaurant close to the 16th St/Mission BART Station. I come here just for Burger King and order my food to go then I'd get on the 22, 33, 14, 14L, 49 or BART!
Quick & Safety Tip:
Always keep any valuables out of site (this includes cell phones, mp3s, wallets, etc.)
Traveling through here at night? I wouldn't recommend it but if you it is necessary for you to do so, then travel with a group/companion (someone you know and trust)!
Other than that, this place gets 1 star for being a BART Station. BART runs trains to and from this station gets you to where your destination in a lightning speed!
Nearby restaurants include:
Burger King
McDonald's

This station consistently smells like sweat and shit, and the creepers on the platform above making catcalls at me not my favorite - especially after dark. Not to mention - it's right in drug deal city!
But hey, it's my closest BART station, and it gets me from A to B. -

Escalator smoothly carried me up to the surface, where there was a guy taking a whiz. He looked at me and said, "How's it goin'?"
If I was a crack, meth, or smack addict, if I was looking for a toothless hooker, if I wanted to smell some of the worst smells in San Francisco, if I wanted to get robbed, or fence some stolen goods, if I wanted to pull my pants down and take a hot messy dump, I'd give this BART station five stars.
I can only guess this is some kind of containment zone. -

Two stars because you get me to the Mission, my favorite place in the City but...damn. Only that one, narrow, long staircase to reach the train platform in a HUGE station, really? I always end up running down that huge hall to catch a train and usually miss it due to idiots coming up the other way or sit on the stairs despite the crowds needed to get through. Whoever planned this station needs to be b*tch-slapped for incompetentcy. And don't even get me started on the skeezes, pervs, and sketchy characters that hang around all night. Ah, and don't forget the rampant perfume of poverty--urine--that permeates this place.

If you're homeless, this is hands down THE place to live. Sure, you are probably thinking, "How can someone homeless see this review?!" But some of the homeless here in SF have access to free Internet at the library, shelters or lost/stolen smartphones. So this review is for those Internet savvy survivalists.
So my excursion of irony began at the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station and ended here--the ghetto fabulous 16th & Mission station.
The station is old, but well kept. You're sure to find many friends and black market deals at the top of the escalators. Lots of open space to spread your legs and relax or comfortably take a dump where ever you like.
The accommodations around here offer many fast food joints such as McDonalds and the BK Lounge. After filling yourself up on fast food cellulose and soy soil run off over 42 thirst quenching ounces of high frutose corn syrup, you can check out the live music venue at the bottom of the west station escalator. Great local musicians play all the BART station hits. Slow dance with crackwhores to George Michael's sax solo from Careless Whisper or dance like Gloria Estefan with the pigeons to Miami Sound Machine's Rhythm Is Gonna Get You on the plastic drums.
The station service here is your usual overpaid BART attitudes, but dont mind them when scouting for your next humble abode--they are too busy shutting off the upper 99%'s cellular service or dealing with new hipsters fresh from SFO looking for Dolores. -

I maintain that this is the worst block in SF. Forget the loin and parts of SOMA, this place is worse. There's literally dirty syringes on the block. I live at 25th and Valencia, so I use 24th St BART much more often but this stop is just too convenient to completely avoid.
Ladies- have your mace ready and cover your face if possible. I personally like to wear a black, dirty, oversized hoodie and run through staring at the ground.
Gentlemen- be aware of your surroundings and watch out for toothless hookers. -

During the daytime on weekends, you may be treated to some random rally or protest as you ride up the escalator, or choose to hoof it on the stairs to avoid the noobie blockers. The station interior is actually quite nice, minus the urine.
Any other time when the sun is on the other side of the earth, you may be treated to rape, murder, extortion, mugging, or any other sort of unpleasant thing you might imagine, along with many other things you might not imagine.
At all times, you will be treated to the smell of fresh, nay, stale ass piss, as if 10000 people ran around the station naked and spread the golden elixir all over the walls, ceiling, and ofc, floors...
Unfortunately, there are hella good places to eat over here, so...pay $2 bucks to ride the train, or save the Jefferson and have your car desecrated and broken into for $500.

I'm going to be honest. This is definitely not a BART stop that I prefer to frequent. To sum up the other reviews and my opinion of this place, let's just call this station one fat tree. Why? Because it's SHADY. HELLA shady. There isn't that much inside the station itself, but the entrance/exit up top on the ground floor will instantly raise some red flags in your safety radar. But you know what...there are some really tasty food stops in this area, so if it's on my way or if I have time, I'll take this stop. But that doesn't make this place any less shady. There are volunteer security patrols roaming the streets sometimes, but they can't be everywhere. Just be careful.
p.s. The Sandwich Place which is right across the street is delicious. try it out. -
Review from Cara D.
This isn't my favorite BART station. It's darker and smaller and I just feel more closed-in there than I do at a lot of the others I frequent. I'll go here if I'm meeting up with friends in the Mission, but other than that, meh.
The Verdict: Sorry, 16th & Mission BART. -

This place is just appalling and represents everything that is wrong with San Francisco. Fuck diversity and all the ~enlightened~ hipsters who think this place makes SF what it is. NO. I don't need to see people flaunting their scabies, shooting up publicly, or mugging innocent bystanders. Let's buy out Treasure Island with our tax dollars, ship all the addicts/homeless over there, and create a mini-welfare state complete with a mental institution, rehabilitation center, and free housing. I don't care - just get these freaks away!
We truly need Rudy Giuliani to move here and fix this city up like he did NYC. -

Lots of human poop and crack outside. Rush inside. Well, if you need to take the BART that is. Otherwise just walk on a different block. Nothing bad will happen to you here, but it'll make you feel desperate about human race, and you don't need that. Now if you're depressive or suicidal, this station may have some therapeutic virtues. Hell.

Holy sketchiness, Batman. During the daylight hours it's not so scary, but once night falls, watch the fuck out. The second you emerge aboveground, be careful. Keep your purse close, keep your Mace in your hand, and pray to the sweet baby Jesus that you don't get raped and murdered. Also, hold your breath because the smell of bum piss is thick enough to chew. Disgusting and scary.

Yeah. It's sad. I know. You know what though? If you don't like it you can walk right up the block to Valencia St.'s outdoor mall-type-strip that it has going on, buy a five dollar latte, a vintage belt or something, and forget all about poverty, lesions, veterans, desperation, whatever. No more bummers. Pffft! Gone. I'm serious, you can really do that.
I try to look at it like this: The 16th & Mission BART Station is a reminder of some real and terrible facts of life. I'm not talking in a like a "I grew up in the suburbs but I can still handle the streets now gimme cred kind of way" either. What I mean is that it's easy to forget what a close proximity you can be from some serious human misery and be totally oblivious and unconcerned. Too many people forget and that's why we live on a planet with billionaires who hate sharing. Google map Casablanca or Cape Town or something. Check out how close the houses with pools are to the slums. It's kind of weird at first, but if you think about it for a minute it's really pretty standard.
This is my backyard (figuratively, I don't live in The Mission). I care about it. This place is an insane place, but an honest one, with honest human beings. Except for the lady with the tracheotomy who was trying to bum a cigarette from me all raspy like "It's okay hunny, they ain't bad for my throat." She was definitely lying. -

Probably the most efficient Bay Area public transportation. If it wasn't for BART I think I would go crazy because MUNI is just pitiful. The only set back is why are the escalators one way? On the Walgreens side there are escalators going down and on the main entrance there's only one escalator going up. It doesn't make sense. If there was a plan to have you exit and enter a specific way, shouldn't there be arrows? Anyhow, the job gets done either way, I get from point A to Point B pretty quickly.

The bart station itself actually isn't too bad, but once you venture up top it's crawling with drug dealers, homeless and the like. It's a scary place to be for a single women a lone. The area in general could use some "cleaning up" if possible I avoid this station, but once in awhile I just HAVE to get off here for whatever reason.
The Bart Station itself, inside the paid area, isn't too bad, it's actually much cleaner then I had expected and their were a lot of business travelers heading home, so that gave me a sigh of relief. Just outside the paid area a man continuously tried to get me to buy a Bart ticket off of him, I said no thank you and walked away, but he continued to approach me, he was so pushy I finally had to be aggressive and tell him to get lost or I'll scream. He ventured back to the top. -
Review from Eric B.
There was an old Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode called Past Tense. The crew of the Defiant is thrown back in time to 2024 on Earth. The USA has attempted to solve the problem of homelessness by erecting "Sanctuary Districts" where unemployed and mentally ill persons are placed in makeshift ghettos. Sisko and Bashir are awakened by a pair of police officers, who believe them to be vagrants and send them to the ghetto. Do you think they might have filmed this scene and parts of this Sanctuary District at or near the 16th & Mission BART Station?
At the same time, it is the Mission and the neighbourhood is fun and alive. Plus, Mission Delores Park, Bi-Rite Creamery and on to the Castro make a pleasant days walk. But when you're starting out or returning, just make sure to keep alert, avoid eye contact, move strategically, and when possible keep your back to the wall. -

Super easy to find, but it can be very over run with people not actually riding bart. Doesn't smell too bad either.

Review from Akvile H.
Day time, it's fine, doable if you really need to get off here, but I can say that I wouldn't feel very comfortable being alone here at night. It's near a convenient location in the Mission, but I would avoid it if I could. If you pass the pay area, it's much cleaner and safer, but coming down or out of it is best described as "sketchy". If you do have to use it at night, go with a group or be aware of your surroundings.

This bart station is disgusting! Everytime I go it smells like pee, someone is harassing me for change and I see various drug transactions and usage. I try to avoid this station at all cost, but some times can't avoid it. If I know I most get off at this station I prepare myself. I make sure my bag is secure, I have nothing that looks valuable hanging out, and try not to engage to many people. The last time I went here I saw about 3 cops standing around talking while some guy sold drugs not to far away. Bart needs to step up security here!

I was meeting a friend outside the 16th St BART (clearly I don't really like him that much...) and a hooker threatened to kill him if he didn't wait for me on another corner because apparently Anglos on that block who are over the age of 25 look like cops and are bad for business. It was 11am on a Tuesday.
Since "no stars" is not an option, my star is for the guy playing the saxophone.
***Kidding about the friend - he's one of my favorite people and top five favorite pirates. -

I don't get to this area much. But, I went last Friday and the stench of this place has been permanently burned into my nostril hair follicles. As if sitting on the BART with a puke-soaked seat cushion (unknowingly) in the seat in front of me from Mac Arthur to Embarcadero wasn't enough.
Exiting the 16th & Mission Bart station, you are whisked into an area that San Francisco doesn't advertise. It smells like sewage and what I can only imagine the smell that a fatal disease would emanate. If going to a crack house was ever on my list of strange goals, I could cross it off for having stepped foot in this place.
But, it gets 2 stars anyway. 1 for just keeping it real and 1 for getting me smack dab in the middle some of the best taquerias in town. -

Every morning, I descend the 16th & Mission BART station stairs on my way to work.
And I swear, every other morning I end up inevitably flashing some poor soul behind me, as the station turns into a giant friggin' wind tunnel whenever the trains pass through. It's an ongoing fight to keep my skirt from blowing up all Marilyn Monroe-style, only much less, uh, graceful.
And despite aforementioned wind tunnel, this station is always really hot and stuffy. Why? I have no idea. Maybe from all the people smoking crack at the street level.Listed in: I live in the Mission

Outside of the BART station:
-men urinating? Check.
-dollar store nearby? Check.
-lots of yelling, screaming and fighting? Check.
-buses 14, 22, 33, 49? Check.
-ice cream cart with *ring ring* bell? Check.
-men selling (most likely) stolen items nearby? Check.
-bible thumpers with a megaphone? Check.
-someone asking you for money? Check.
-yucky men trying to attract your attention? Check.
You're so charming, 16th and Mission BART Station. I only give you one more star because you allow a few ways to get home to the Inner Richmond. -

God almighty. Every time I use this station I feel like I need to have my eyeballs scrubbed with carbolic acid to take away the things I've seen around here. Last night I saw a woman (tranny?) giving a guy a bj in the paid area.
But you know what was really the worst part? She/he was bending over real far, was sans undergarments and I saw it's hoo-ha.
My eyes still hurt. -

Good place to get buy heroin and get cut with a box cutter or machete. This location is caked with filth. SFPD and BART Police need to crack down on the losers here. Oh, but I guess the jails are full so nevermind, you'll just have to deal with it.

To the little bitch-ass punk at the 16th Street Station who *TRIED* to steal my iPod from me this morning:
FUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOU!!!!
I held on to my clunky, 30 Gig, circa 2005 iPod for dear life as that kid was trying to pry it from my determined hands, so he did NOT get away with it. Something tells me he really wouldn't appreciate all the whiny "hipster"-pop-shit music I have on it anyway.
There's nothing like a good 'ole reinforced stereotype to get your day started. It's unfortunate, really, and much more for him than for me.
Imma get windmill-style on him if I ever see him again, tho. -

If you want to get raped or assaulted at a BART station, hang out at the one at 16th & Mission.
The interior of the station itself isn't so bad, it's just the above-ground area surrounding it that's the problem. The block of Mission between 16th St & 17th St is hella stabby, and probably one of the worst parts of the city outside of the Tenderloin and Bayview. -

Gross, yes. A theatre, yes. Escapeable, yes. Walk through it and don't be afraid of anyone here. In fact, stare 'em down with a wild smirk on your face. That's always fun. Better yet, smile, and simply say, "Sorry, I wish I could help." Then go get yourself a shrimp taco at Pancho Villa's and smother it with salsa verde.
Now no one has to feel bad! -

Inhabited by bums, crackheads, and drug dealers.
Pretty much an open air drug market, where you can see crackheads fighting, hobos shitting in the open, get lectured about the rapture in Spanish, or people selling stolen property on the street.
They should really set up sprinklers or something to clean it up mid day or rig up some sort of street sweeping apparatus under the hobo carts. Or cover the pavement in white gas and set it ablaze. -
Review from John S.
San Francisco, CA
This doesn't really have anything to do with the station itself--OK, maybe it does, but in an unintended-circumstances kind of way--but I'm convinced that more crime goes down in broad daylight at the corner of 16th and Mission Streets than at any other street corner in the city. I'm sure there are places with more crime, and there are a bunch of places, many really close to this intersection, that are much more dangerous to be standing around at; but I've seen more drugs change hands here in front of my face than I've seen in my entire life, and I haven't even lived in San Francisco for five years.
All of that said, I like the look of the stuff they added to the street level of this BART station. The glass thingy by the Walgreens and Burger King looks really cool, especially at night.
The actual inside of the station is really gross, though, and it's really hot down here. I don't understand why because while I know the Mission is a generally warmer part of San Francisco, it's nowhere near as hot as Oakland, and yet the 12th and 19th Street stations never get this stuffy. I always feel claustrophobic when I'm waiting for the train on the platforms. I think they're not as far underground as they are on Market Street. I've also seen tons of rats in this station, although they're usually on the tracks.Listed in: Within One Square Mile of Me, BART

I got punched in the clavicle outside of 16th Street BART.
In fact, at 2:00AM on a Friday night a towering scumbag knocked out another man and then proceeded to unbuckle his pants to urinate on the dude as he was laying unconscious on the pavement. As my friend yelled at him to stop, he turned on her and told her he'd kill her. All I did was open my big mouth and BAM- a little ninja from the shadows came to fist jab me in the throat/neck. Moments later a crack-addled herd of night-zombies came to nose into our business- and defend the pissing bully. Against a couple girls.
Just another day in the bay. -

Him: "Ch-ch-change?"
Me: "I'm sorry, happy new year."
Him: "I'll cut 'cha."
Me: "Whoa. Sorry, no change."
Him: "No, I...I'm sorry to bother you. Change?"
Me: "No, sorry."
Him: "I'll cut 'cha."
Two stars for at least amusing me. It's a BART station in a rough neck of town, and you take it for what it is. I've never felt unsafe through the turnstyle, and above ground, well, walk quick and with purpose.
Oh, and to whoever that was that didn't understand why the escalators go down? Well duh, don't you want to get underground faster, too? -

I go through here almost every day. Yeah, it's a little creepy outside sometimes, but it's also really cool when you come home and there's a bunch of street food vendors right when you come up the escalator. It's a good place to find street food stands in general.
Bonus: also a great place to buy crack.
