They had everything I needed to make Pho
Beef bones, Vermicelli noodles, Pho spice pack, mit leaves, bean sprouts etc
This place is cheaper than the square market for certain meats.
4 stars buddy. -
Review from Sophia C.
This is the poor man's 99 ranch market. This is literally a 99 ranch market minus interior decorating (you can tell because they sell the same things). Chinese markets don't usually spend much money on aesthetics but this place LITERALLY looks like they just rented the property, threw groceries inside, and opened the doors.
On the plus side everything is cheaper on average. On the weekends, this place is every (wo)man for himself (or herself). Heavy traffic and rude people cutting you off with their shopping carts. If you've never been in the situation you won't be pleasantly surprised.
How clean is it? The restrooms are O-K by Chinese market standards but that's aiming pretty low. If you are desperate enough to use their restrooms, they don't provide paper towels to dry your hands (gotta save $$ I guess). Why wash your hands anyways if you gotta touch that nasty door knob on your way out. Let's just sit here and imagine for a second all the types of human fluids or particles that is on that exit door knob. Thank you 168, for no paper towels. -

Cheap and Fresh produce, seafood and meats!
Love coming here when they have a sale on lobsters, lol!
Also, another go to place when Hawaii and 99 Ranch aren't on sale....
Also, on the weekends, they have a lot of samples to try, and the pushy, older Asian ladies are a pain in the butt to deal with *shudders*
Besides that, my only biggest gripe...the stupid parking lot, especially when you have the dumb drivers, or parents with kids, who just let them run amuck without even worrying about their safety...just watch out! -

DO NOT GO TO THIS MARKET. They have false advertisement to get you into the store and will not honor their coupon listed in the newspaper. They had a coupon for dry shredded pork for $8.99 year. Regular price is about $16. When I got to the checkout, they said they couldn't honor the coupon because it wasn't in their system yet. The sale was supposed to start 2 DAYS ago. How could it not be in their system when everything else was? The manager said the coupon wasn't valid, even though all the fine prints in it said that it was. I can not believe they would cause a scene over 7 measly dollars. Typical Asian business. They have complete disregard towards customer satisfaction. I will never return to this market again nor will I refer anyone. Please stay away at all cost. Shady business. Unmoral and unethical.

I hear that this place is owned by 99 Ranch. Well, the other night I went over to 99 Ranch to pick up some random groceries for a good price...I pretty much left empty handed. But then I come across 168 Market. And there were lots of good deals that I came away with. For example, red-bean popsicles at 99 Ranch: more than $5 a box. At 168 Market: 3 boxes for $5. Also got some aloe vera drink on sale, and other good stuff.

What can I say... The place is dirty. Its loud. It gets crowded. Don't expect any help. Looking past all that they have cheap cheap produce. Cheapest produce I've ever found besides the farmers market. I wouldn't buy any American brand products as they are usually really expensive at any asian market.

Nicely located in the heart of San Gabriel, this super market is one of the best I shop for my groceries, when visitng my mom.
Great fresh seafood, and good selections of food.
If you're into cooking, and like to use only fresh meats, vegetable, then this is the place.
Oh did I say they alway have weekly sample food?
Yes everyweek they have few small tables, to offer best buy of the week, so you know you can take advantages of the deals.
If you plan of spending between $20 to 60 bucks, you will go home with approximately 7 to 10 bags worth of grocerues for at least a whole month for yourself:)
Well, go try and enjoy. -

When I got home I discovered that I was not given my halibut and sashimi yesterday, $20 of $100 spent in groceries.
Should not have bothered to go back but I did only to receive the standard SGV service where the customer is never right. 30 mins later the manager, who would not speak with me, refuse to credit me for my merchandise which was presumably given to another lucky shopper. I could never imagine going through this ordeal at Von's or a mainstream market.
So tired of the B rating and crappy service in SGV food/market experience. -
Review from Joyce Y.
This supermarket is kinda dirty.
The fruits and veggies are not super fresh. I found some limes and lemons that looked really old and shriveled up. It's also a little bit more expensive than other asian markets, where you can get a little bit cheaper for fruits and veggies.
Also, like all asian markets on the weekend, it's very crowded! -

This is one of the best asian super markets I have been to. The veggies and fruits are fresh all at amazingly dirt cheap prices. The meats and seafood are also fresh. If you are looking for a specific asian spice, I am sure you will find it at the 168 market.
This place has a huge parking lot, accepts credit cards, super fast check out registers.
The only minor bad thing I can say about this place is the employees all speak chinese and hardly any english. There may be a communication issue, but if you explain to them or speak slowly they will eventually understand you and get you what you are looking for. -

If your an international cuisine cook and love asian food, then this is your one stop shop!
I love coming here or to any asian store, they have fresh produce and a great selection of seafood and I love the way they slice their meat, it's perfect for pho and grilling. -

Great place to replenish your supply of soy sauces! This is one of the cheaper Asian supermarkets in SGV and is the sister-chain of the 99 Ranch Market. I always come here for the fresh produce (mainly bananas), coconut bread, and beef. Their meat selection isn't has large as 99 ranch, but is definitely cheaper.
There's plenty of parking, but watch out for the recycling center located in the middle of the parking lot. Sometimes, there are pedestrians that don't look where they're going.
I would like to see more prepared meals like 99 Ranch (yes, I'm sometimes lazy in cooking), but overall this is a good place to grab all your essentials. -
Review from Annie W.
The quality of the fruits and vegetables were fairly poor. I was already here and wanted to shop for my traditional hot pot feast with my family.
I left with a handful of enoki mushrooms that were already pre packages, a can of satay sauce, a bottle of hot sauce and I bounced.
The vegetables were pretty limp, withered looking and not appetizing.
I was recommended to come here so I can buy a 5 lbs. bag of mixed fish, beef, pork balls for the hot pot.
Sadly, they were no mixed bags and buying 5 lbs. worth of each beef and pork balls was a bit too excessive.
This is a massive store, but I rather shop for all my hot pot ingredients at San Gabriel Superstore. -

168 Market in Alhambra/San Gabriel is a regular shopping excursion for us because it might be the cheapest among the Chinese markets. The quality is also a reflection of the price, so, this may not be the store for everything. We do get some great deals on fish, crab, and vegetables and it's hard to pass those up. It helps if you speak Mandarin if you have questions.
Why is it called 168 Market? 168 is pronounced Yi Liu Ba. Eight is a lucky number in China and you can never go wrong with it in your company name. Also, Ba sounds like a word for rich and is akin to Liu Fa (similar in meaning to getting luck). So, the truth is, it doesn't mean anything, but just sounds cool. Kind of like the old "Lucky" stores in So-Cal. Anyways, if you are cost-conscious, you can't go wrong at 168 Market.Listed in: Shop, Drop, and Roll

Review from Peter C.
So funny thing about Chinese businesses and American holidays - Chinese people don't seem to care. This place was open on Thanksgiving, and Mrs. C and I were happy to stroll in and shop around. This place's strong point is sauces. They have Asian sauces here in abundance. Whether you need soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, hoisin, sesame oil, fish sauce, sriracha, rice vinegar, oyster sauce.... you name it, they've got it. The fruits and vegetables are also pretty good, and I've always like the freshness of some harder-to-find things like Vietnamese basil and golden kiwi.
Snack aisle has lots of Japanese influences, and you'll find plenty of Japanese snacks and candy. Tea selection is ok. The frozen section is pretty big, but it's mostly 100 different kinds of frozen dumplings.
Take pity on the poor Vons grocery store that this used to be. It was so empty and rarely had any shoppers. It seems kinda unfair that now it's a Chinese grocery store, it's busy all the time. But I'm Chinese, so I'm not exactly helping matters. Grrr @ myself -
Review from Peter D.
I typically come here for the frozen pork and leek dumplings and honeydew soy milk. They also have decent fruit and veggies at pretty low prices. It's big, clean and a great place to pick up all your Asian cooking basics. I like the large parking space since I don't mind walking a bit. I'd definitely recommend it over most Asian markets.

I've been here numerous times even when it originally use to be Von's because it's conveniently located across the street from my house. I've even had my car towed here before. :)
I love this market because it's one of the few Asian markets in San Gabriel Valley that takes all forms of credit as well as offer cash back with no restrictions attached. I've come here to swipe for gum once or twice even.
The majority of my visit is to get exceedingly cheap fruit, good fruit too, that's littered in crates right at the front entrance. You can grab a bag of cuties (real ones) for under $3 and during yellow mango season a box of 6 for $4.99. Fruit is never that cheap elsewhere! Or that abundant! Plenty of parking as well. -

Like:
- Small packaged eateries (e.g., pig's ears, seaweed salad, etc.)
- BEST PLACE to get hot pot ingredients (i.e., sliced meat- lamb, beef, chicken, etc.)
- AMAZING and SURPRISING Quality for sliced meats and Filet Mignon!
- BEST PLACE to get dumplings (3 bags for $5.50!!!)
- BEST PLACE to get kimchi
- BEST PLACE to get Chinese snacks
- BEST PLACE to get vegetables (i.e., pound of bok-choy for less than $3!!!)
- BEST PLACE to shop if you are trying to feed a lot of people on a tight budget...(thanks grandma, you're awesome).
Dislike:
- Sometimes it gets crowded but I don't mind standing in line with a bunch of older women who remind me of my grandmother.
- Sometimes their fruits are over-ripe (Fruits are best obtained from Trader Joe's- there is one in San Marino on Huntington Blvd.)
Note:
Shopping here makes me feel like I am going back to my roots. They speak mostly Cantonese here (I speak mandarin) but I feel so at home in this market!
NOT A GOOD PLACE to get "American foods" such as orange juice, milk, etc. Eggs are dirt cheap (less than $2 for a dozen of medium sized white eggs). -
Review from Laura T.
I use to come here when it use to be Vons, I was at shock that Vons closed and became a Asian supermarket.
Anyways, I come here pretty much once a month, either with my mom or for a quick cigg run for my dad. This place is less then a mile from where a live. As a matter of fact, a bunch of asian markets are within the 5 mile radius of me.
They are pretty much your typical asian supermarket, Chinese music playing in the background. Fruits inside a big cardboard box with a price tag sticking out. Prices at asian markets are crazy cheap but for this location, its slightly a bit expensive compared to others. The floor is typically dirty, doesn't seem like they clean it much, but sadly they do, it just doesn't look like they do at all.
The layout of the place is the same as Vons. It just more packed with a lot of random stuff. Asian markets doesn't seem to follow much of the safely rules. They have a tendency of pushing the limits or cutting it close. Why do I say that you say? Well I seen numerous times, items being stacked too high. I am a short person, so climbing on to the shelves for me wouldn't be good. The last thing I need is to be banded by an asian market.
I normally come here for their snacks, prices are okay, I am sure if I try hard or a bit willing to drive out of the way for a bit. I can find the same item for a much cheaper price.
I just know if I want to come to this market, I should do it in the morning when no one is up and ready to go geocery shopping. Parking is always back, they share the plaza with small restaurant and stores also CVS. Parts of the parking lot is currently blocked off because of the gas station.
I honestly would prefer another market over 168. I am slightly resenting them for taking over Vons, even til this day. -

I'm always shopping at 168 b/c it is cheap. I am giving four stars b/c some of their priduce is on the verge of being rotten but that's an asian market for you LOL.....just don't buy the rotten veggies and you'll be fine. Cheap prices and they have all sorts of asian imported foods. You'll even find non-asians shopping there b/c of the low low prices. All they really need is to give away free gifts and they'd get five stars hahaha
I went there with my mother once and she ran into five of her friends. What can i say but those Chinese mothers love to save money LOL
So if you want to save money on groceries go to 168...Just do not buy the rotten food but even a blind man can tell when an apple has a worm in it hahahahahahaha -

The number 168 is pronounced Yi Lio Ba, its suppose to rhyme with Yi Lu Fa! Meaning good fortune all the way! Pretty smart eh?!
Anyway, this place is great. I love the wide selection they have here. Its way better than 99 ranch. Prices are pretty good too!
Great place to look for fresh seafood! Asian supermarkets are always cheaper than american ones when it comes fresh groceries. If you are looking to save and looking for some asian imported goodies, this is a good place to start. -

I went back to take a photo of the Armadillo. I did not find it. Perhaps they checked the freshness date. I did not see the venison either...They had Jack fruit and dragon fruit and their pork bellies looked pretty good.
They did have what they called Razor clams, boiled and frozen meats about 1 to 2 inches long. It did not show place of origin. They had Alligator meat (farm raised in America) .1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Gabriel, CA
I rarely, rarely come here. However, it can sometimes satisfy your needs. It takes a lot of comparison shopping with the neighboring supermarkets to get the cheapest prices. Sometimes it's Hawaii(more than not), other times it's 99Ranch, and then sometimes it's 168. Of course, this is just talking about the Asian markets. Why would you compare 168 to an American supermarket?
Anyway, 168 sometimes has very good prices. If you're reading this, it might be too late, but they sell some of the commonly used/eaten Lunar New Year items at a REDUCED price! What's so good about that? Because other places like Hawaii and 99Ranch usually INCREASE their prices on these kinds of items as the holiday approaches. So why does 168 do the opposite? No idea. Maybe they want to steal costumers.
Asian grocery shoppers are usually pretty loyal to the markets that have served them well in past times. However, that contradicts with the notion that Asian people are quite cheap and go for the lowest prices. Shrug!
Anyway, parking is a HELLUVALOT easier to find here than 99Ranch and ESPECIALLY Hawaii. Other than that, it really takes some pricing knowledge to know where to get what. Have fun!
Oh, and yes, avoid American products. This applies to all Asian markets. They never throw away their American item stocks. NEVER! -
Review from Karen C.
I think the owner of this place is in cohorts with 99 Ranch markets... or maybe they have the same owner who knows?! But doing a side-by-side comparison of both store's flyers on items that are on sale... it's quite suspicious, the very same items are on sale and also for the very same price! Anyways this place is kinda of your typical Asian supermarket, so a guarantee to find your asiany vegetables like bok choy, napa cabbage and daikon radishes. Things aren't always on sale so it helps if you shop around at other stores.
The produce seems fresher than most markets and neatly bundled. Since this location used to be a Vons, the aisles are set up wider and they have a good refrigerated sections. The people at the store are friendly. Holla to the flaming checkout boy who called me beautiful he's such a sweetie! =D
People have complained about the Asian drivers here before but I haven't had any troubles at this location.Yes, I know I am Asian driver too, but I swear I am not causing any of the problems all the accidents I've been in was because people ran into ME ok! -

This is an awesome market. You can get huge, delicious crab here...even better than the beach. They steam everything for you. They have fresh skrimp....haha I mean shrimp, clams, lots of wonderful fruits and vegetables and there are probably about a million things that you can make with all of their ingredients. There are plums, papayas, mangos, coconut that are sweet and delicious. They have all kinds of sauces, sweet sauces, salty, pungent... They also have lots of sampling and this really is great. I especially LOVE one of the samples that I had of this ABSOLUTELY delicious Korean salted, and slightly roasted seaweed.
Its just a mecca of wonderfulness. -

I like this place... I really like this place. Despite it's not a sano looking market, the live fish tanks are usually great deals, like today for example they have live dungeness crabs for as low as $2.69lb. Good prices on meat today as average prices on your Asian staples.
It's busy on weekends, but the parking lot is big so no problem. Plus it is right across the street from 101 Noodle Express which has the best Beef Rolls on the planet. Also there a great Wells Fargo branch a block away with lots of Asian cuties working the teller windows and they are so friendly and easy to talk to. Love the community of business here. -

Durian? Check.
Kimchi? Check.
Balut (fetal duck egg)? Check.
Fresh fish and a butcher shop? Check and check!
All signs of a good chinese market. But 168 is different. Perhaps it's because they took over an old Vons that was previously an old Smith's (the western facade is a dead giveaway.) The aisles here are big and I did NOT, and I repeat I did NOT run into any little Chinese ladies with a shopping cart.
This place has character.
They give free balloons on Saturday and Sunday to children so the Chinese parents can keep track of their midgets by looking for the giggling balloons.
And remember what drew you to Costco in the first place? The free samples that can stand-in for lunch? This place had tons of free stuff to try. Lumpia. Seasonings. Drinks. And no membership is required!
I will be back! -
Review from Jenna C.
Great place for fruits and veggis! Way way cheaper than Vons or Ralphs.
I just moved down here from up North and first made a shopping spree at Ralphs and Vons. Spent like $50 at one and $40 at the other. I knew there had to be an asian market that I could go to get cheaper groceries. Not wanted to go all the way down to Ranch 99, I found 168. Kinda scary sounding because of its resemblance to 187... haha i don't know why that comes to mind. Anyways, the place had lots of parking even though it was packed with shoppers! I had to wait at the cart return area just to steal a cart from some old man as soon as he took his bags!
I went in and found really cheap strawberries, bananas and peaches. Much much cheaper than the aforementioned grocery stores. The overall market was pretty clean and the cashiers were pretty friendly. It's still crowded with pushy asian women and it's always fun to see people poking at the 'fresh' fish sitting on the beds of ice. Will continue to go here to buy produce until someone recommends some place better! -

This is one big supermarket (formerly Vons) mostly patronised by folks from mainland China. So, be prepared and expect China's courtesy (none), attitude (i.e.buy and/or get lost and dirty looks) and cleanliness.
Excellent seafood selections but prices range from moderate to not that special. Same goes to meat and poultry. General groceries are definitely higher than Hawaii's or San Gabriel Superstore
Fruits and vegetables (they look old and tired) sections are messy on Sundays (inconsiderate shoppers). Again prices range from special to not that special.........
Since the prices are alleged to be cheaper than their competitors (really?), expect to shop alongsides with messy cheapskates.
Man, I miss shopping in Koreatown where my body and wallet should be. -

San Jose, CA
When compared to all the other Asian supermarkets in the area, this place is considered small. The selections are a little bit less, but not by much, and I was able to find a lot of great things here I wouldn't of found at a 99 Ranch, especially in the choice of roots and seasonings.
The prices are good, the mark down on western goods here is phenomenal, and you should by all your American frozen foods here.
The layout is a great place for inspiration when deciding on what to cook.
Their pork buns are terrible, though. Just awful.
Also, they don't have a deli, or anything already cooked, just produce. Their bakery section is tossed in a corner and almost non-existent, but their frozen foods section is decent. -

The three C's.
Clean
Cheap
... cute?
Okay, maybe it only fufills two C's but it is still a great place to shop regardless.
The meats and seafood here is soo fresh compared to 99 or other local markets in the area. I personally don't find the place disorganized and I've only been here just a little bit over a handful of times. I know that fruits/vegetables are right there when you walk in. Meat/seafood in the back on the left. Dairy and juices are in the back on the right. Alcohol is on rfar left, I think. Bakery goods are near the exit. Frozen foods and desserts are near the bakery--front, right. In the middle are the aisles. My favorite aisles are the snack and drinks aisles. Soooo many Asian snacks of goodness.
Recent purchases [Friday]
2 pounds of clams [soooo fresh and sweet and salty from the ocean, so super delicious in the hot pot/shabu shabu]
salmon and tuna sashimi--surprisingly fresh
lots of snacks-YAMAmotoYAMA hot'n spicy nori really is spicy! and lots of pocky
ice cream pops--green tea ice creamiscles... red bean-iscles..
and other stuff... can't remember
but total was 60 because my brother and i went a bit crazy on the snacks...
love this market. so clean... -

I had been just about any asian super market in SGV, this one has the best price, don't goes to 99 ranch, they are over price for the same item. 168 offer many onsales items, defintie the best place to buy microwave food. They got tons of freezer for frozen foods. I think the vegetables and meat isn't top notch but i usually only goes there to buy frozen microwave food for work, and if ind this one has lots of choices and great value.
Parking isn't hard, many park near cvs, but be careful it might get ticket since their had guard. -

Ridiculously cheap groceries. I went here once with my parents. It's a cheap alternative to 99 Ranch Market, but certainly no replacement. There's not take-out meals, no bakery, no turnip cakes, no Taiwanese mochi, no fresh drinks... it's just dang cheap groceries.
Everything is consistently cheaper than any other supermarket, even skippy honey roasted peanut butter. I love that their vitasoy 6 packs are only $1.99. They have hi-chews 10 packs for about $3. Deloba cookies are about $1.39. That's about all I buy at the supermarket anyway. Good stuff. -

I hope management had changed since it first opened. When Vons became 168, some of the inventory stayed such as Mexican jello, dairy and sausages. It sat there for over a year
I bought fresh soymilk one time and found Kurds of cottage cheese. It took a few chunky gulps to realize the undeliberate process of fermentization.
To sum up, it is overall disgusting. -

South Pasadena, CA
This place is f**king disgusting and is packed to the brim on weekends. Bring the crappiest car you have available to you if you dare brave this place on the weekends, because I predict there will be a 1 in 2 chances of getting hit by someone in the parking lot. My mom personally has gotten our Lexus RX400h hit 4 times while she was shopping from the terrible drivers here (I won't list any stereotypes here, but I find it TRUE when driving in this plaza). This was on 4 SEPARATE occasions. We still pester her today to not drive the Lexus here.
Anyways, I was picking up some groceries for my mom and battled the nightmarish parking lot on a Sunday afternoon. I was probably in the parking lot for a good 15 minutes fighting through a fleet of drivers who take at least 5 tries to complete a simple 3 point turn. Drove me nuts.
The produce here is dirt cheap, but at a cost. The green onions were on sale for 15cents per bundle but they were already starting to rot. The greenish tinge was replaced with brownish slime and it seemed like all the other vegetables were rotting also. I would rather spend a little more $ and go elsewhere for better product. Plus there are plenty of old Asian ladies who rudely shove in and out to get what they want, even if you were waiting there patiently for someone else to be done. Thank god they couldn't understand the f-bombs I was dropping when pushed and elbowed away.
The seafood selection here is huge, and is probably the highpoint of shopping here. The tanks look really clean compared to most Asian markets and had plenty of fish/shellfish/and exotics to choose from (saw huge skate wings and live conch for sale).
The cashier was undoubtedly slow but both her and the bagboy were pretty nice and spoke English pretty well.
Do yourself a favor, go to 99 Ranch, H Mart, or Mitsuwa for your general Asian ingredients and needs.
