Review from Ken D.
With the choices of restaurants with a full bar in the Westfield area, 16 Prospect was a default on my short list during a recent business trip. I wish my review could be more detailed, but given my 'new (very drunk) best friend' (VDBF) at the bar, I only got to try the calamari with three sauces. They, and my martini, were both good. My VDBF recommended the burger, and said that all the food was of quality. If only he ate some between V&Ts, I might have gotten to sample an entree.

This place is one of the best spots in Westfield. It has a great selection of wines by the glass and bottle, liquors, and craft beers. The appetizer selection is also excellent -- seriously try the Calamari, I challenge you to find a better one out there. As for the entrees, you can't go wrong with the Hangar Steak or the Lobster Ravioli.

I appreciated the attempt at the decor but noticed dirty skylights. I was disturbed by the inconsistent pricing. A small cup of soup was $3.00 but a small bowl of chili w/rice was $16 (chili needed seasoning). Our drinks were good and service was okay. Probably won't go back.

What a fun place for drinks in the Jerz! They had a nice cocktail list and I loved how intimate it felt inside. Small but cozy. The night we went there was a guy playing his guitar and singing 80s music ... it was awesome.

What I don't understand is how management can lose their palate or not taste their restaurants food.
This place has had good moments in the times that we've eaten here 2008-2010. However we've been here twice in 2011 and the food was well below par for the course. The pasta have been gummy and tasteless and the salads had brown greens as well as the burgers which had brown greens. The only thing this place is good for is a half way decent NJ style pizza, I only say NJ as it sure as heck isn't NY or Brooklyn style and the drinks. I'm sorry to have to write this review.
All that I will ask for Christmas this year is for NJ restaurants not be the gahbage... that they are. It's like the owners of these NJ restaurants have no pride or respect in what they do.
PS I also have to question their seasonal specials. If you have the exact same menu items on your seasonal specials menu for 11.5 months out of the year, well guess what, that s&^% isn't seasonal. Get a clue!1 Previous Review: Show all »

while I do not fall head over heals for the food at 16 Prospect I AM in love with the front room atmosphere, the music and the warmth of the decor. We will continue to keep 16 Prospect as one of our "go to" spots..Nothing like it in Westfield and surrounding area...

My friend and I came here this evening for dinner. I made reservations for 7:45 and we were seated right away in the back room with the fireplace. The whole restaurant has such a pleasant atmosphere, and it's a great, fantastic spot for a date. Immediately, a tall pitcher of water was brought to the table and our glasses were filled. Bread and olive oil followed - very tasty. Our waiter was very soft spoken and attentive, fitting with the atmosphere. He brought us wine menus - I chose the chianti and very much enjoyed it. The glass was reasonably priced at $6.
For my meal, I had the margherita pizza with black olives. It was a very appropriate size for dinner and was quite delicious. My friend had the penne vodka and liked it as well; she had enough to take home with her. We were too full for dessert, but I was happy to see a root beer float as an option.
The front of the restaurant has a stage with live music and a lively bar. I will definitely return, with my boyfriend or with friends. It's a great place and I'm happy I tried it, despite some other subpar reviews here. -

Very disappointed with the food here. It has been degrading each time I've been here over the past year ( 3 times).
Last time my wife and I were there, we were served obviously frozen food. This was in a $20+ entree. We politely told the waitress (who was a vegetarian and didn't know anything about the menu) and she simply said "OK" and offered us nothing for the insulting meal.
Rather than make a stink, I simply will take my business elsewhere. -

Highlights include an addictive cheddar cheese burger (known as 'crack burger' among younger regulars) and super cheap if you are around at lunch time; a hanger steak and portabella mushroom risotto; an engaging crowd of locals; and top-notch live music acts.

I am only giving one star because I have to...I have been going to this restaurant since it was northside trattoria when chris and tim took it over it became really good but like all restaurants when they get big their food goes downhill. Unfortunately it has happend soooooooooooo bad with this place the house pasta salad which used to be my favorite is just absolutely appauling especially for the price the greek salad doesn't even have lettuce in it? The entrees I don't even feel are worth discussing I was so disappointed. they are just not what they used to be. I would not recommend going here to nebody drive a little further and eat at rosies wine bar!

I was so sad to see La Trattoria go, but when I saw that 16 Prospect opened in this space, I figured I have to try it at least once. Well, I've been here a few times and have had enjoyable experiences each time. The food, wine, atmosphere is just so pleasant. If you're sitting down for dinner, I suggest sitting in the back, where it may be quieter and further from the piano. If you're here for drinks, sit in the front and enjoy the piano during the weekend -- this past weekend the pianist ended his set with "O Solo Mio" with EVERYONE singing along. It's a definite stop in downtown Westfield, whether you're stopping in for a cocktail or for a 3-course dinner. I would also recommend it for larger/private parties.

a very disappointing meal. I had penne vodka which was just ok. The sauce was watery. Everyone at our table seemed to say the samething. The food was decent but not terrible. The problem is the meal was quite pricy. For food at that price I would have excepted it to be much better. The decorations on the inside are also very strange so if you do eat here I recommend eating outside. I must say that while the food was not up to par the service was. Quick and friendly, I was impressed by the service. But that doesn't make up for the mediocre food and high prices.

Hubby and I walked into 16 Prospect for dinner on a Saturday night. We saw the piano near the door and noticed there are several bar tables across from the bar. We decided it would be nice to sit by the fire, listen to the piano and enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner. The piano player came back before we ordered and the piano IS SO LOUD I could not hear our waiter nor could he hear us. I am gluten intolerant and wanted to be sure he heard my order. He just looked at me blankly and I hoped for the best. I ordered the Spring Bistro Salad with a piece of salmon. He did hear our wine order as it appeared many minutes later. We have been to many bars with piano's and have sat much closer and could still have a conversation. Our meal arrived a little while later. My salad was bland (according to the menu, nothing was changed to make it gf) the potatoes were mushy and the salmon was fishy. My husband ordered the diver scallops w/ risotto and it was very salty and the scallops were ok.
The thing is, this place has sooo much potential. It has a liquor license for one but it has lots of room and prime real estate. If the owners could find a decent chef, choose a killer menu (perhaps some FRESH food) and find an interior designer to create some atmosphere (any atmosphere would be an improvment) would help tremendously. Perhaps even find an appropriate piano for the space as well! -

Normally, I wouldn't review a place without at least TRYING the food, but I just have to tell you guys about this.... my cousin is a VERY picky eater and we looked at the menu and he actually gave a nod of approval so we ventured inside.
We were seated in the back. Beautiful ambiance and friendly enough staff. They poured us some bottled water before we ordered which was all very classy and nice. The menu selection was vast and seemingly high end, but we never got a chance to find out because there was some dude singing and playing piano and butchering every single song he sang. I mean, it was GOD AWFUL to the point where it was hurting my brain to continue listening to it. We contemplated asking the waiter to have the sound turned down, until we realized that it was a LIVE performer that was being blasted on the speakers throughout the restaurant! No wonder everyone was sitting outside! All the outdoor tables were filled so we just got up and walked out. Seriously guys... if you're going to let untalented amateurs perform during peak dinner hours... at least have the decency to NOT blast the music all over the restaurant. You lost our business tonight, my friends. I'd go back, if they promise me a silent dinner! -

ok- agree below with the piano being a little much. but I also agree that it is vital to sit in the back room if eating dinner.
what do i like about 16 prospect- very good mixed drinks menu (for the misses) small plate menu is exceptional. I highly recommend the lobster ravioli small plate, its a bit pricey for 4 mini- raviolis, but they are worth it. The blush sauce is heaven and you will be dipping the homemade bread until your plate is dry..
Service could be better, also it is important for the wait staff to understand the menu. Need to know portions sizes. My group ordered an appetizer with clams that is nowhere near enough food to share. Also ordered a specialty pizza that was more of a personal pan size pizza. It was very good, but staff needs to effectively communicate serving sizes, which i do not believe are listed on menu (ex- 8in pizza). Never made a reservation and was sat both times without a problem.
Can not comment on a full dinner experience. Only small plate and drinks for me at this spot......
