Hidden Gem alert.  Locals are going to hate me. I am going to tell all my friends visiting Portland to make the trip to SO PO to visit 158 because its THAT good.

Can you say homemade bagels?  Can you say amazingly fresh toppings?  What about, insanely good coffee?  Can you say all that?  If you love bagels and coffee, you need to check this place out.

Ok,Ok, I know its not much to look at from the outside.  it may look like a shack next to a marina, but do'nt judge a book by its cover.  Don't let the large jolly roger out front scare you.  Be open minded, be patient, and be polite, and you shall be rewarded my friend.  I had a latte and an onion bagel w/ Sausage egg and cheese and it was off the hook.  Ok, maybe that was a bad pun as fishing is nothing to joke around these parts.

But seriously, super friendly staff, amazing coffee, killer bagels, crazy fresh ingredients, chill outdoor patio.  I felt right at home here.  Cant wait to come back.

    I like it here!

Strolled in for breakfast with friends looking to eat our hangovers away.  I ordered up a B.E.C. on an onion bagel and it did not disappoint.  The bacon was the good stuff - of the blackstrap molasses variety, I believe. And the bagel was excellent quality for Maine.

Cozy, relaxed. I imagine it probably gets pretty crowded at times, but they do have outdoor seating or you can get it to go.

Might not be worth a special trip, but if you're in the area needing sustenance you should definitely consider 158!

Why this place doesn't have hundreds of raves on Yelp is beyond me.  But it is 7 AM, and as we travel back to Prince Edward Island from New York City, I am waiting for the doors to open at this eclectic little joint housed in an old boat builders shop which just happens to be one of the best bagel and sandwich joints in North America.

Think, if you will, of the best Montreal bagel you have ever had. Then think of that bagel on steroids. Then throw in that particular "Portland Vibe"...a little like Seattle...old blue jeans and a lot less pretension than a place like New York City- Portland doesn't have to spend billions on advertising telling you it is the best city in the world, the universe, ever, for eternity.

It just is. What it is.

For those using a GPS to find the joint, beware-- it is actually situated at 158 Benjamin W  Pickett St. Just entering Pickett St will do no good.

High on my list is the Everything Bagel with bacon egg and cheese. The bacon is legendary- thick cut, naturally cured, dripping with maple syrup.  The bagel is not your run of the mill puffy air filled sack. Everything includes fennel and sea salt,  oodles of natural grains piled on top, and all of it on a bagel whose unique flavour is partially due to a sourdough starter- chewy, substantial and delicious.

There are many choices of sandwiches, all very good. Another real standout is the Salmon- salmon with cucumbers red onion capers and fresh dill. Fabulous!! Or try the Capone- egg, prosciutto and pesto. Or try the Cubano- shredded pork, Black Forest Ham, cheddar, pickles and house mustard. Yum yum. Have a coffee- hot or cold it is excellent.

Got your puppy along for the ride? No problem as there are picnic tables out back and the happy relaxed staff will kindly bring a bowl of water for Rufus (or in our case, Mugs, who really enjoyed licking the butter from that cute little tots hands).

Portland itself needs to be explored over a few days as there are tons of places serving first class home made real damn good food, and some of the best Chefs in the world have little tiny hideaways around the city.

This is possibly the most wonderful coffee shop I've ever been to. And I've been to a LOT of coffeeshops. Strong, delicious brew. No flavored syrups to be found. Fantastic bagel sandwiches. Friendly baristas. A skull and crossbones flag at the door. Cozy, mismatched decor. Gorgeous, but amusing, little drawings on a nautical theme. A punk soundtrack. Outdoor seating. A screen door thrown open to the sea air. I could die happy here.
