Definitely a fan of this place.  Cozy little neighborhood lounge spot.  The drinks are very good, and the staff is great.  They also serve food, sort of small plates and the like.  I've only had a few items on the menu but they were all tasty.  The seating can be a little odd sometimes because most of the sections are for larger groups, but people tend to be willing to shuffle around to make it work.  I've heard them play a variety of music and, unless there is a DJ, I think one of the bartenders picks what he/she wants to play.

Finally, don't be afraid to dance.  There isn't always a dance party going on, but if you are willing to start one, the 1534 crowd will typically join in.

Is Monday an off night?  With all the four and five star reviews I actually feel guilty giving this place the review I'd like to give, which is two stars.  Why you ask... read on.

I was searching the area for round two drink after dinner with a buddy of mine, and the only place I hadn't been to around here was this one.  So off we go towards 1534.  Walking in, the place is occupied by a few folks sitting outside, the doors are open to the street.  It's a gorgeous space, and very welcoming.  The hosts are very attentive, and seat us at the bar in a moment.

I grab a bar stool and order an Old Fashioned.  I figure this is a standby, good to order anywhere.  The bartender is very friendly, and quick to mix up the drink.  However what came out was just plain weird.  I order these all the time, tend to have a redish color, and pack a punch.  This drink tasted kinda like club soda with a splash of orange.  Being an attentive guy, he noticed I wasn't impressed and asked if it was ok.  I said it tasted different than I'd had before, no large ice chunk, even bits of crushed ice, and this orange soda flavor.  He explained that he didn't like bitters much so didn't use a lot.  So offered to throw a dash more in.  Then he suggested I stir.

I did all this, but still was not impressed.  So I asked if there were signature cocktails I could choose from.  I chose the Wally Harbanger.  He mixed it up quickly and offered it over.  Definitely a step up from the previous drink.  I was mildly satisfied.

I would come back here for the space, it's super sexy, and probably they have a great menu.  But the drinks they were making - at least on a Monday night, were very subpar.

Is this a sign I've been hanging in Williamsburg too long, and all the mixologists have left the island?  Is Soho now a Euro tourist wasteland, leaving no top notch venues behind?

It is rare to find a cocktail bar in Manhattan that isn't pretentious as hell, and 1534 is just that.

Pretty fantastic. After a big disappointment at Bowery Ballroom, where I was rejected at the door because I was apparently sold fake tickets, I was looking to drown my sorrows. Drown my sorrows TASTEFULLY, mind you. I went to Jacques and sat at the bar. I was being too precise in asking for a impromptu cocktail and the bartender told me about the lounge 1534 downstairs.

So we happened upon it - I would have passed right on by the door downstairs had I not gone into Jacques. I only had time for one drink, which I enjoyed thoroughly. I got the Rock the Casbah which is similar to a mint julep with the additional spices of cinnamon and cardamon. It was delicious and you could really taste all the different flavors. The bourbon was the most important part for me, though. The lounge itself was quiet and sexy. I would love to come back and try more cocktails sometime.

My 1534 experience goes to show that you really gotta make the most of your nights that do not go as planned because it might work out really well in an unplanned sort of way despite everything (bourbon).

Having some time to kill before meeting my friends last night, I stopped by 1534 shortly after they opened. Located right next door to Jacques, there isn't much identifying 1534, except a lone sign above the door.

Since I arrived very early, around 5:15, I was the only one here, which actually turned out to be a good thing. Had I come here later on when the place was totally packed, I could be writing a much different review.

Anyways, the bartender on duty las night (Saturday) was Eli. He's a really cool guy and when I asked him what would be a good drink for someone who'd never been here before, he took some time to ask me what flavors I liked, as well as what kinds of alcohol. Based off that, he made me something and had me guess what was in it, which I completely failed at doing. The drink he made me was the Gold Dust, which was Rye, House Made Ginger Agave Syrup and Lemon Juice. I was definitely impressed, especially since the rye did not hijack the drink. Despite the fact that this drink only had three ingredients, its simplicity is what made it shine. I'd definitely recommend it.

In between drinks one and two, Eli and I were talking about Angel's Share and their Early Grey Infused Vodka, so Eli suggested that I try the Gypsy Woman for my second drink. Made of African Rooibos Infused Gin, St. Germaine, Yellow Chartreuse, Lime Juice and a Lemon Peel, this was another good drink. He also gave me a free shot of the tea infused gin, which didn't taste or smell like gin.

I also tried their Tuna Tartare, which was delicious and fresh. It was perfectly seasoned and served with parmesan crisps and cucumbers.

Since there was nobody else in here until the very end, Eli also took some time to explain to be the differences between rye, whiskey, scotch and bourbon and also let me smell different bottles so that I could see the differences between using pure rye to make rye vs. using a blend to make whiskey.

Price-wise, most drinks are only $12. Drink sizes are standard.

The only downside to this place was that it was incredibly hot. I'm not sure if the air conditioning wasn't working or just not turned on, but it was uncomfortable. Otherwise, the decor, booths are bar are pretty cool.

As I asked for my check, Eli asked me if I was familiar with 1534's rules:

Me: Umm, I've seen some on the website, but don't know them offhand.
Eli: Ok, look at the menu and read number 7.
Me: Never turn down a free shot from your bartender... ok, I'm down. Are you going to do a shot with me?
    Eli: Absolutely

He asked me what I'd like to do a shot of and I asked him to make it unique, something that I couldn't get everyday. He ended up choosing Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka. This bison grass infusion gave the vodka a vanilla-chamomile flavor.  It was incredibly smooth and didn't taste like vodka at all.

Except for the oppressive heat, I had a really good time here. I had come here for one drink, but one drink turned into four. Definitely check it out and come sooner than later for a more personalized experience.

The variety wasn't there. Most of the drinks were whiskey based, and they only had one vodka based cocktail. The waitress did not seem knowledgable about the drink selections or offer any drink suggestions.

The food menu was interesting but the potions were very small. The Vietmanese summer rolls came with only four small sushi style pieces and that cost around $7! The meatballs were much better, but not mind blowing just meatballs with a sweet sauce.

Atmosphere was very relaxed and calming. The layout of the room was very open, semicircle booths around a small table. It could be a good place for a group of friends hanging out after work. It wasn't as speakeasy as I thought it would be, which was a little let down.

This upgrade is more of a 3.5, but with spring arriving, my ability to round up has improved.

A last minute dinner in Chinatown led to a party of 8 needing a cool bar to check out.  An avid yelper and possibly one of the more sober of the party, I got tapped to "Figure it out".  After finding a few of the speakeasies had gone the way of the list, we opted for 1534.  My 2 star rating has now become a 4.

For whatever reason, they had a guy working there that identified people who were larger parties.  A table came up!  My suspicion was correct. If you're seated, it's quite nice.  Also with weather improved you can actually relax and enjoy the place a bit more.

    A few more drinks:

The hot toddy... does not taste at all of alcohol. Absolutely delicious
    The Gypsy woman.... Me likes...
The silk road, extremely smooth.  Who knew you could do that with gin.

All and all a much nicer time than my last.  Music seemed a bit lower and I was able to hear others in more of a bar format.

1534 is one of the better hand crafted specialty cocktail bars that I've been to in NYC.  The staff are all well versed in the menu and can readily recommend a drink based on your personal preferences.  I was particular fond of the whiskey based cocktails that they offered.  They also have an appetizers menu and the lamb meatballs that I tired were particularly memorable.  We came for pre-dinner drinks so I can't really comment on the crowd during the high traffic hours.  But judging from their house rules that is listed on every menu:

1.) You must enjoy yourself here.
2.) Do not take yourself too seriously.
3.) Do not sit quietly at the bar. You must engage in conversation.
4.) We drink to be merry not to be boring.
5.) If a beautiful woman/man is by themselves, you must attempt conversation and attempt courtship
6.) When an awesome power ballad is playing you must sing along
7.) Never pass up a free shot from a staff member
8.) Finally, bad decisions are celebrated here not condemned. . .No judging.

I'm sure people have an awesome time here every night.  1954 is a great choice for good stiff drinks in a laid back environment.

This is my new neighborhood favorite hang out, the drinks are amazing and I love the fact that not that many people know about it. I really hope this little hide away doesn't get too hyped up like every other NYC speakeasy bar. This place is super cozy, great for a cute intimate date or a get together with friends. Good background music (nothing too loud or crazy), very classy place; you feel like you are in some remote area on NYC in a different era. Other words I could use to describe this place... warm, cozy, inviting, just perfect to get away from the madness of soho... sometimes, when craziness is just not what you are looking for. I'm def in love with this little bar. I will def be one of their regulars :)

In 1534 all kinds of exciting things happen including Anabaptists forcing people to get baptized, Martin Luther translating the Bible into German, and Huguenots attacking Catholics. That same year, Jacques Cartier sailed forth on the ocean blue in order to reach India, but instead discovered Canada, which apparently according to 1534's website was an anti-climatic affair, but they exchanged a few trinkets in the spirit of friendship.

Visiting 1534 is a little like setting  forth on an unknown adventure. 1534's entrance is slightly hidden and overshadowed by Jacques, the older brother and a full restaurant. You walk all the way down the stairs while wondering if you're accidentally going to enter Jacques's basement storage, but instead a beautiful elegantly understated lounge awaits you (just watch for the last step). I was instantly charmed and I love the friendly atmosphere that they cultivate there. While other speakeasies with their bespoke cocktails fosters an exclusive "don't bother or talk to other patrons" attitude, 1534's rules are that you encouraged to talk to anyone you please. Their attitude is that we're here to have a good time and treat the place as if you were at a great house party.

    Here are their rules:

       You must enjoy yourself here.
Do not take yourself too seriously.
Do not sit quietly at the bar. You must engage in conversation.
We drink to be merry not to be boring.
If a beautiful woman/man is by themselves, you must attempt conversation and attempt courtship
When an awesome power ballad is playing you must sing along
Never pass up a free shot from a staff member
Finally, bad decisions are celebrated here not condemned. . .No judging.

    What's not to love?

Their cocktails are incredibly lovely. The use of bitters is far more understated than Amor y Armago, thus you have a sweeter drink (but no worries, the sweetness is more of a delicate fruity or floral notes, than saccharine sweetness of white sugar) warmed with woody or herby accents. The drinks are creative and festive without the tackiness of tiki bars or loud tourist getaways.

I ordered the lamb meats with harissa sauces and *sigh.* It was pure love. Wonderful little balls of delicate, savory lamb draped in a rich brown gravy with a hint of spice from the harissa. I ordered a second plate of it after I finished my first.

The service is very slow. Don't come here unless you plan on whiling away for a couple hours at least. Don't be in a hurry and be prepared to have every appear at a snail's pace. As long as you know you're there for the long haul, relax and enjoy yourself and you'll love it.

And if you're lucky, maybe there'll be a tall, dark, and handsome stranger who's worth stalking, er talking to, there as well.

After sampling their cocktails at a few Yelp Elite events, I finally had the chance to check out 1534 in the flesh. I would probably conclude that this is a late night spot since it was nearly empty at the peak of happy hour.. which I don't mind since my goal was to have a drink and a conversation. Initially, both were delightful -- the bartender definitely knew what he was doing and the cocktails were great.. each better than the last. Besides being tasty, they were noticeably potent, too. When you're paying $12 per cocktail, there better be some alcohol in there... well, I'm happy to report that there is. I highly recommend the Queen of Sheba and the Way of the Dragon, while my friend enjoyed the Wakea. We sampled the Moroccan Chicken Cigars and the Lamb Meatballs, both of which were tasty, light bites to accompany the cocktails. We really enjoyed the late '90s soundtrack... until about 8:30 when the volume mysteriously increased about 10 levels and made it impossible to hear across the table. Luckily, the staff was happy to lower the volume since only a few tables were occupied. A great spot for a good cocktail and intimate conversation.. if it's early enough.

This underground bar is tucked away next to the main entrance for Jacques. It has a decent amount of space for what it is, but could use more seating. Six enormous booths aren't useful...it's not like New Yorkers share.

Drinks are pricey and are made slowly but well. I had a Wally Harbanger, which is somewhat like a bourbon mojito. And by "a", I mean three.

No cell service down here...so it's a good place to take a date if you want to make sure she can't get an escape text. Or if you want to be able to focus on each other. Depends on how creepy your approach is.

5 stars for the bar.  We did not eat, but the food looked good.  Love the location and the atmosphere.  Good underground (literally and figuratively) atmosphere. You sort of feel like you're walking into something unknown and kind of special as you decent from street level. Quiet and relaxed.  Creative drink options and it seems like you can't go wrong with anything. The service was slow but friendly, and we were enjoying ourselves so the pace didn't change my overall opinion.

My friend and I ended up here after scoring a bloomspot coupon for two drinks and two appetizers for $20.

I really enjoyed the drinks here however, our bartender could have been a little bit more cheerful.  I guess it had to do with it being a Sunday and business is surprisingly slow.  Furthermore, she showed her displeasure after I offered up my bloomspot coupon and she was very explicit about tipping at the original price of the bill.

Anyway, my friend and I were here for the cocktails and when you first peruse the menu, the drinks are sectioned off into continents such as the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

Asia definitely had the most distinct recipes especially names like Shi she so horny drink which I ended up ordering two more drinks.

I was impressed with the croque monsieur appetizers as after examining it, it look liked the cheese was microwaved on top of a piece of bread.  Of course, you can't go wrong with the pomme frites and after my friend and I polished it off, we ordered another round along with the drinks.

The place is tiny and dark and great for a tête-à-tête. On a busy night like Thursday, Friday or Saturday, I'm sure it would be hard to squeeze into this underground joint as it looks like it only seats twenty people.

I'd like to go back as with most establishments, their drink menus are rotated based on season so I'm looking forward to their spring menu!

"Bad decisions are celebrated here, not condemned". At 1534, they actually state this on their menu. I think I've found my soul-mate!! If you're impatient and a borderline alcoholic like myself, you will be frustrated and antsy when you order a drink and don't receive it until about 10 minutes later. Please trust me when I say it is most definitely worth the wait. I don't know what extra special ingredients they put in those things to make them so tasty (and I probably don't want to know) , but the second I take a sip of the sweet deliciousness, all is well in the world. The ambiance makes for a great date spot, and the music always seems to vibe with what's going on around the bar- And I'm not just saying that because I know one of their DJ's.. even though I do, and he's awesome. See you soon, 1534 :)

I've been on this semi-hidden finds kick lately, and was happy to check this place out.  I went on a Tuesday night, so it wasn't too crowded, and I didn't mind the layout of the bar as some reviewers weren't too fond of.  The bar is quite small though...still only have 4 stools.  If you can get there before it gets crowded, the small booths are perfect for catching up with a few friends.  There's also a longer table near the back for a bigger party.

The drinks were great.  I tried the Way of the Dragon (deliciously spicy) and Shi-So-Horney (the name says it all) and the "Quickie" Lemon Drop Her Panties (despite the name, it was NOT my favorite of the three...I expected a lemon-drop type of shot, and it was a champagne cocktail).

Even tasted the fries (pretty standard), the salt cod fritters (fantastic), and the croque monsieur sticks (not too bad....but would probably try something new next time).

All-in-all, a good find and would return again.

I am a big fan of Prohibition-style bars, so I was ecstatic to learn of the new 1534 opening near my office.  I was able to obtain a discount through http://BlackboardEats.com, which entitled me to a punch and two appetizers for a measly $35 or so.  The lounge was housed in a dimly lit basement underneath the restaurant, Jacques.  The bar had a lot of character with its dark wood accents and cozy sofas.  In fact, the space reminded me a lot of Raines Law Room.

Our server was very extremely helpful when assisting with our menu selections and could even be considered as too attentive throughout our stay.  However, I attribute her persistence to the boredom of having to work at a lounge that was almost entirely empty on a Thursday evening.

For our beverage, we enjoyed a punch that contained green tea-infused gin, ginger juice, pineapple juice, and other sweet ingredients.  The concoction was served in small sake cups and poured from a tea pot.  The flavors of this complex drink unraveled ingredient by ingredient with each sip.  It managed to be refreshing and tart, yet potent.

The food, however, was detestable.  The Caribbean influenced-Grilled Sugar Cane Shrimp With Coconut Curry was not the slightest bit fresh.  The shrimp were overcooked and pure mush, plus the coconut curry dipping sauce was bland and lacked spice. The Harissa-Spiced Lamb Meatballs were a mixture of ground lamb shoulder and merguez sausage that were also gooey and devoid of structure.  The sauce was infused with Moroccan chili, which lent a horrifically smoky taste to the meat.

1534 was a decent place for a quiet drink or a date, but I would definitely recommend eating elsewhere.

I was at the Yelp event that featured several bars that were serving up special drinks.  The bartender, Justin, who happened to be the owner of 1534, poured us some amazing drinks.  (This is at the yelp event) - We got to talking and invited us to go down to his bar 1534.

So we went back...dimly lit this place is all mood and attitude!  Instantly I was drawn to the very cozy looking booths and tables and then scanning over a bit - the bar.  The bar was eye catching, drinks amazing and food delightful!

Of course i'll go back there soon!

This place is so cool, but it becomes much less awesome when it's packed on a weekend night.  I came on a Saturday and turned right back around and walked out because it was loud and obnoxiously crowded like all the pubs in the area.  I came back the next Wednesday, after work, and it was perfect.  Lots of small groups happily chatty and laughing and a few couples snuggled together in the booths.  We had a bloomspot/groupon deal for a tea kettle which I highly recommend.  You definitely get the bang for your buck and the drinks are DELICIOUS.  People wonder why other people like to drink--it's because that shit tastes good if you do it right!!  The food is pretty good too, but I think I'd be hesitant to pay full price for it.  I really liked the lamb meatballs though.

I liked the atmosphere of this lounge, more than I enjoyed the cocktails... While, the drinks were good, and creative, I think I've just become jaded if they don't do anything special... Maybe it was the lack of rum cocktails on the menu, when we came in (this was back in January) that disappointed me (since, from what I've understood, they took their name from something that had to do with French Polynesian Rums)

By no means, do I mean to label this as a sub par lounge, nor do I mean to say that I will not be back - Maybe my experience was a bit lacking, or I was just expecting too much that night.

First impressions: I was put off by the loudness of this place and was actually hoping for a quieter atmosphere.

However, after reading the philosophy on the bar menu I understood why the bar was so raucous.

    The rules are simple:
    1. You must enjoy yourself here.
    2. Do not take yourself too seriously.
    3. Do not sit quietly at the bar. You must engage in conversation.
    4. We drink to be merry not to be boring.

    8. Finally, bad decisions are celebrated here not condemned. . .No judging.

They seek to be fun and welcoming as opposed to the usual pretentious speakeasy vibe. 1534 is the anti-speakeasy speakeasy - I can respect that.

Drinks were all solid. My favorite was the Zanzibar. It similar to a White Russian and comes in a giant glass fitting for a milk shake. I'll definitely be back!

I recently learned that 1534 was voted best cocktail bar in some magazine. That's a real headscratcher for me. I would imagine that the whole point of going to a cocktail bar is wanting to have a certain type of experience. I'm thinking, you want to savor everything that's on the menu. When you look at your drink, you don't want to see ice occupying 97% of the glass. Could be I'm in the wrong or that the owners have a different vision of a cocktail bar. Clearly they do, I read somewhere that they encourage strangers to chat each other up if seated at the bar and that the bartenders want you to strike up conversations with them.

Okaaay. Isn't that behavior something that happens at most bars? Or did they know my surly, antisocial ass was coming? Anyway, watch your step as you come down the stairs. There's no handrail and there's nothing on the steps preventing a spilled drink or just rain from causing a bad fall. Once you're seated and take a look around, you notice some things.

There are only 4 seats at the bar. Just past the bar is a space for about 15 people or so, if it gets crowded. Then you have a few booths. If I'm at a small bar, I want to feel cozy but this layout works against that. And what happens to me if all the seats at the bar are taken and the booths are taken? Where do I stand and not get in the way of the server?

Get rid of some of the lights. Mainly because I prefer darkness. If you're a place that encourages singalongs with the power ballads, then you might want to play some. Instead, we were hearing a reggae track, then a midtempo dance track... someone's iPod mix? Isn't it odd that I remember all this but the drinks left no real impression? Don't get me wrong. I want to like this place. Just seems like they haven't worked out all the kinks.

Coming here on a rainy Tuesday night was the best thing I could have done. I am a fan of really well mixed drinks and so I got to have just that, an intimate setting, good tasting cocktail.  I had "The Silk Road", just up my alley, citrusy and you did not feel the alcohol right away. This place also has a small food pickin's I was not impressed with the coconut shrimp, but possibly because I expected batter and coconut on the shrimp.  No sign above door, entrance right next to the Jacques restaurant.
Bottom line: greatly priced and well made cocktails ($12-13) for Manhattan, Speakeasy vibe, good drink menu, not too long.  Fun "rules of engagement" menu. Friendly service.  I'd assume it gets interesting when its busy since it has a few round large booths and so if you are a new yorker.. probably best to come on a  non weekend night.. just as with any speakeasy to really enjoy what this place has to offer in vibe.

When I found out about NYC Cocktail week I was very excited to take advantage of the great deals. Out of all the bars on the list we chose 1534. The website made it sound pretty interesting so off we went on a Friday night. The ad clearly stated that the special was offered either  between 6:00 -8:00 pm or after 10:00pm so we showed up right at 10:00. Unfortunately, it was apparently up to the bar's discretion so it turned out that they only offered it until 9:00 and we were too late. Personally, I think they should've offered it as a courtesy being that we were there for that purpose and the ad wasn't clear but they didn't so they lose one star for that reason. The bf and I did decide to go back the following week and give it one more chance though.

So we return around 6:30 or so and the lighting seemed a little brighter than I remembered it the first time. Perhaps because it was earlier in the evening. It was definitely not as busy though which was nice because we got a booth right away.

We each ordered two drinks and two of the appetizers. The drink options were pretty good but there were only 3 appetizers to choose from. The drinks were tasty but a couple of them had too much ice. Also, the service was a bit slow considering the fact that there weren't that many people in the place. It took a long time to get our bill because our server kept disappearing.

Overall the place is nice but the layout of the floor is weird. The bar is not a focal point at all and only has 4 bar stools. The booths make it seem like they are trying to be more of a lounge bar but there is a giant space on the floor which could be utilized better. It just seems like this place is having a bit of an identity crisis. Perhaps this is something they should revisit.

Nice backroom atmosphere with an upbeat vibe and never a problem at the door.

Once you wade through the never ending crowd at the bar, you'll find a varied selection of unique Polynesian influenced cocktails all crafted from top shelf liquors. The tea pots a good bet for a group and are better than the punch bowls at a lot of other cocktail lounges.

1534 would be a good first stop with a fun date, but dont plan on staying the whole night here.

Also came here with my roomies and boyfriend for Cocktail Week. As other reviews have noted, it is hidden and you have to be on the lookout for a tiny sign.

It is dark and feels like a dungeon.

The cocktail menu for Cocktail Week was limited and unlike at Pegu Club, you couldn't split the 2 drinks and 1 app deal for $20 with someone. Our waitress was also a bit aloof and off and weird. We also witnessed a girl get smacked in the face with a door while waiting in line for the bathroom (this speaks to the tiny space near the kitchen and bathroom).

The cocktails were pretty good. The appetizers were also good (we tried the lamb meatballs, fries, and a breaded cheese/ham thing).

Would come back if in the area and in the mood for "fancy" cocktails.

I'm a fan of laidback/inconspicuous bars, so I had to 'drag' my friends to go there for my "farewell for now" drinks.  The place is definitely a little harder to find than most bars, and we walked downstairs before entering a nice lounge.  On a Sunday night, the place was quite empty (no problem for us).

Their drinks are influenced by regions of the world (Americas, French Polynesia, Africa, and Asia).  Even if I don't care for rum or whiskey, these drinks are fun enough to give them a try.  Some of them we tried were Tohu Swizzle, Same Same but Different, Pearl of the Antilles, an African-based drink with rooibos tea, and a vintage punch of Haloong Bay Cooler.  They were all good (and strong!).  The Haloong Bay Cooler was fun to pour out of a big metal teapot and to drink out of tea cups.  It was definitely good amount for 5 people.

Their "rules" are amusing as well.  One of them was that "When an awesome power ballad is playing you must sing along."  Unfortunately, it was a Sunday night, so the bartender/DJ opted for mellow folk/alternative music that we had to request for power ballad just for fun.  It'd probably be more fun if it were a Saturday night with a couple of more people (but not too many).

    I'd definitely consider going back.

In 1534, Jacques Cartier sailed the ocean bleu...and nearly 500 years later his discovery of Canada becomes the raison d'etre for a new basement cocktail bar.

My initial feelings of guilt for celebrating colonialism quickly subsided when I tasted my first cocktail. The menu resembles a passport, complete with stamps. You can literally drink your way around the world, hopping from one continent to the next where France planted its flag.

The drinks were designed by the mixology masters of Contemporary Cocktails, the same team that created the Breslin's menu.

The space isn't the largest (Appropriate I suppose as  France's empire was never as large as the beef-steaks, I mean, English) yet it doesn't feel extremely tiny. Booths can seat about 6 and any more cocktail enthusiast capacity must be supplemented by benches. One side of the room features a long bench, perhaps resembling a pew in a Catholic church.

I started with a "Pearl of the Antilles" composed of cachaca, cane syrup, lime juice, and muddled blueberry and cardamom. Cachaca's a key ingredient in the Brazillian caipirinha so there was some resemblance.

Next stop was the St. Louis fizz, made from spiced rum, bourbon, spiced syrup, fresh lemon juice, and egg white. (Not Missouri but Senegal). As far as fizzes go I preferred the one at another cocktail lounge in the neighborhood but this one was tasty enough.

The Rebel Yell cocktail was unanimously vetoed by all members of our imperial party. Perhaps used to torture heretics or Huguenots, this drink had the rare value of causing looks of disgust on the face of anyone who tried it. Proceed with caution!

My final exploration was the Foreign Legion punch: chai red bush tea, vs cognac, fresh lemon juice, demerara syrup, and some black cherry preserves. topped off with a lemon wheel and brandy cherry.

This was cool and refreshing, the perfect way to end a night of discovery.

My other discovery, however, was that the bites menu was literally that-- one bite of every item ordered was all that was required. Drinking across le monde is hard work and so I tried the Harissa Spiced Lamb Meatballs, Chicken Pastilla With Almonds, Dates And Lemon and finally Salt Cod Fritters.  Every item appeared as the smaller brother of its namesake. Lamb meatballs? Small enough to eat with a tooth pick. Pastilla? As small as a snuffbox. (Or Tic Tac container for a more modern metaphor). Cod fritters? Maybe as large as a chocolate malt ball.

So don't come here on an empty stomach or you'll be increasingly hungry as the night goes on.

But do come here to drink, learn geography, and drink some more!

Our waitresses were a bit unpredictable, much like running an overseas department. Some drinks were forgotten, others were provided that we never ordered.

On a side note, it was great to connect with old and new yelpers alike
in our celebration of 1534. Perhaps this will start a trend and we can next meet at future bars 1607 and 1492.

Another hidden spot except there's a door woman waiting at the top of the stairs to greet you and bring you down into the bar.

I came with a few friends so we couldn't sit at the bar (darn!) but there were plenty of tables to sit at. The space is small but not cramped and has a very unpretentious atmosphere. The servers and bartenders were in typical city garb...nothing fancy like Apotheke or rustic like Milk & Honey.

Our server was really helpful and chipper. I ended up ordering Napoleon's Loss (strong tequila) and Laotian Blossom (light and fruity). The cocktails that are vodka based are very light and easy to drink. Napoleon's Loss was an edgy order on my part and after my friend took a sip she flagged it as a man's drink. She obviously doesn't know about my whiskey escapades.

They also offer small bites of food, hard liquor, and punch! The Revelry Punch (rye whiskey, yellow chartreuse, pernod absinthe, apple cider, lemon juice, and demerara. topped off with nutmeg and orange wheels) is a must try if you go with a group or alone if you have a faulty liver that will take in any amount of alcohol in comparison to your body size.

    Cocktails $12
    Punch $50-60

You could get both and turn it into a cock/punch kind of night, but I'm not sure if the guys will love it.

I can't emphasize enough how amicable they were. After a long night of drinking around the LES, we, particularly I, had to use the rest room and decided to hit 1534 back up to see if they would let us use their facilities...and they did! No questions asked...just a very warm, "you certainly may."

1534 is one hot little number.

As such, it's no longer under the radar.  In fact on weekends they remove the seats from the bar to free up some additional space.  Not that they let it get too crowded, but it just keeps the space comfortable.  You don't need a seat on a weekend evening anyway- the volume of the alchemy being performed means the bartenders can't really engage in conversation one on one.  The trade off for this slight lapse of attention means they have a shot at staying around, so it's a trade-off I'll make.  Swing by on a weeknight and it's a quality cocktail joint with a specialization on punches; great  if you enjoy chatting with the bartender, getting a mini education on new or unfamiliar spirits, and receiving a bartenders choice that has thought.

In addition to the normal visits, I also went for the Summerfling event on the 14th, I can also say they do events right.  They had decorated the venue in a cheeky luau theme, but it was more of an insider wink at the upsurge in the high class Tiki bars dominating bar trends of late: with cocktails they stayed true to themselves with delicious punches- although in keeping with the theme, drinks (such as the In Luvin Color) came with extra flair in the form of hibiscus flowers, fruit and more fruit on a swizzle stick.

In sum, they do things right whatever night you go, just be prepared to have a different experience based on your timing.

You know what I love in a great new Manhattan cocktail bar? Good snacky time food. They have it. Lap it on up (Damn Lamb Meatballs get me everytime, I'm such a sucker).

Also? Being able to get a seat after work on a Friday night. Below 14th st is the single greatest square mile of fine cocktail drinking on planet earth, with numerous good bars to choose from (Consult this handy list: http://www.yelp.com/li...), yet it's still hard to get a truly good drink there on a Weekend night without a huge crowd and wait. 1534 right now, is under the radar, and that's a good thing for YOU (if not them).

This is a great new offering from Justin Noel and the Contemporary Cocktails Crew (Of Breslin Bar and 44 fame) down in the heart of Nolita/Soho. This Franco themed Cocktail Lounge downstairs at the basement level is hardly noticed by anyone passing by,

Try the Rebel Yell or Same Same But Different if you want something refreshing, or the Bang the Drum if you like your vices stirred and boozy. The punches are also fantastic if you have a small group.

For a name as plain as a combination of numbers, this bar does have some smooth, well-balanced cocktails. I know what you're thinking. Yet another NYC speakeasy? Well, if it's any consolation, they don't play jazz like other speakeasies. They play a mix of rock, jazz, pop and believe it or not, rap. :)

Apart from that schizophrenic music track at the bar, these guys seem to have gotten a lot of things right. Ther drink list is supposedly inspired by France's erstwhile colonies. We tried two egg-white based cocktails first: the St. Louis Fizz (spiced rum, bourbon, lemon, egg white, soda and green cardomom) and Same Same but Different (kinda like a pisco sour but with bitters, ginger and lemongrass). Both drink were absolutely luxurious and flavourful and I was so sad when the glass was empty.

For the next round, we both got drinks on ice. I tried the Foreign FLegion Punch, a cognac based drink with demerara syrup and cherry conserve, it was rustic, delicious and went down pretty easy. His drink was Saigon Folly, a  pepper-infused gin, lemongrass and creme yvette-based cocktail. It was complex and interesting, but kept me wishing it wasn't as diluted.

All through the time we were here, it was quite empty. Apparently this place hasn't caught on quite yet. But I really do see myself coming back here many times, and maybe I'll try the absinthe fountain sometime too. But I'll make sure to come here on a full stomach - they don't have one single vegetarian item on their bites menu.

Lovely spot! Just my speed on a Thursday night - many open seats, quiet tunes, excellent bartender, so much fun ice.  I stuck with my usual Macallan's on the rocks (rock, singular: a beautiful orb of slow-melting ice), but tried everyone else's lovingly crafted cocktails & they were all stellar.  Bartender was friendly but not overly chatty & came to take a shot of whiskey with us at the end of the night.  Crowd, albeit small, was totally inoffensive & for once I felt so happy to have gone out in SoHo.

I will be back & ready for snowcone style ice!

"Mixology coolness, hiding away in Nolita...who knew?"

In deciding where to meet up last night, settled on here to check out this new-ish lounge. Really, really nice and has the potential to be a favourite place of mine.

1534 is just hard enough to find that it may keep away the annoying masses, while not playing to the pretentiousness of a speakeasy.  Once you venture down the long stairs and enter through the double doors, 1534 sports a very nice decor.  You are immersed in Old World Colonial, with a splash of Art Deco in lighting and accents.  Derailing the speakeasy stereotype, an array of contemporary music solidly greets you as you enter (maybe a little too much), varying from Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue" to Cake's "The Distance".

Looking at the extensive menu of drinks and short list of food, I chose the Saigon Folly, which was an interesting combination of pepper infused gin with lemongrass syrup, soda and lemon juice.  Slightly spicy and a touch sweet/sour, which was nice for me as I don't like very sweet drinks.  My companion had a couple of selection from the long list of Single Malt Scotches.  For nosh, we had the Salted Cod Balls.  They were a little average and strangely pared (I thought) with a very creamy mayo derived sauce, which made them too greasy and heavy.

The positives:  Nice concoctions, including some unusual ones, which is an impressive accomplishment in the crowded NYC bar scene.
    - Reasonably priced cocktails for the care and quality the bartender infuses in them: $12.
    - Good place for small groups.
    -  Not very crowded.
    - Comfortable seating and atmosphere, but a grown-up place.
    - BONUS: You can take your B&T boss here and they will be impressed.

The negatives: I understand from our server that this place has been open for a month and a half.  You would have thought they opened last night.  Really disorganized.  After sitting down it took more than 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and there were other 3 other occupied tables!.  Then 30 seconds later, another server asked us for our order.  They also needed to ask 4 times what Single Malt Scotch we wanted (using 3 different people!), and finally decided that they were out of it (it was on their menu, BTW).  Other than the service, I would have certainly given them 5 stars.
