So here, too, the Yelp crowd is a bit harsh on one of Waco's finer and more expensive establishments. I suppose bistro characterizes the nicer than everyday fare, which includes your standard steak, chicken, and pork offerings with a variety of vegetables. The diversity of the menu reflects Cajun, English, and Greek influences. It's family-owned and operated on a small scale, which keeps the feel from being too pretentious for Waco, though this is somewhat mitigated by their slightly higher than average price point. I enjoyed their pork tenderloin, potato melody, and broccoli.

I ate here several months ago with my daughter and son-in-law.  I had eaten here twice before with decent results.  To my dismay there were no Greek menu items to be had besides the waiter recommended Greek potatoes.  I asked the waiter and he seemed confused by my question, so I guess the few menu items they did have are gone.  The salad was decent and about all I ate.  The main course was only alright but what I remember is the "steamed vegetables"  which were big pieces of almost raw carrot with absolutely nothing on them.  Dry as a bone.  I had the Greek potatoes which were shriveled potatoes that had been under a warming lamp for hours (if not days).  As it was a special occasion I did not complain (too much) but it was really a terrible meal.  The first half of the meal the service was OK but after a table of Baylor girls came in, our waiter disappeared.

Don't get the Wellington, it is a piece of beef and a triangle of puff pastry.  Lazy chef.

I went for lunch. This is the only feasible time for one to go here because then you can order something they don't have to cook. I try to not go to 1424 if i can help it, but the parents wanted us to go there.
The menu is fairly normal for Greek food but everything is FAR too expensive for what it is and how it tastes.

I live near to 1424 but just visited for the first time this week.

The menu is nice, and I was tempted by the 1424 wellington, but after seeing the picture and review, glad I went for seafood picatta.

We started with the stuffed mushroom, which was quite good, a bit like a fancy pizza with a lot of cheese though.

The house salad with blue cheese was good, the dressing was very smooth but rich in flavor and did not taste store bought.

From there I had the seafood picatta which was alright but a few gripes:
Temp was inconsistent among the pieces of seafood, the tilapa(arguably not seafood), was cool and the breading had gotten soggy siting on the lettuce and sauce. The scallop was disappointing as the outside was slightly overcooked and rubbery, and there was a bit of a gritty texture, it did not taste dirty, but had the texture of dirty. The shrimp were the saving part, as they were very good.

The other diner had orange vermouth scallops and 2 of the 4 of them were also gritty.

One thing I forgot to mention is that we both had different varieties of rice, and both we some of the best rice ever had at a restaurant. now you may think rice is something simple, but in the US and even in Europe, it is so routinely done wrong. 1424 excels at rice dishes!

For dessert I we split a creme brulee (good but in my opinion too deep of a dish, leaving only a small area of caramelization possible), and white chocolate bread pudding, which was very good. I have had better bread pudding, but this was an excellent example. It was made from the same light but flavorless french bread they serve, an example of something good coming from something mediocre.

I think the price is high($50/person for a full meal) for the quality received. I am not saying I will not go back, but I would prefer to meet the chef and impart a little more flavor and quality before spending big at such a place.

I would consider giving them 4 stars, but many of their seafood specials were unsustainble/overfished and if that is important to you, largely limits their menu.
Otherwise, the service was good, but it wasn't busy when we went on a tuesday night.
We had calamari and the seafood picatta, both were good. The carrot rice was probably the best thing.
It seemed a litte expensive for what you got, but they had a decent wine list, especially if you get a bottle.

There are two ways to evaluate this restaurant.  If I compare it to every place I have eaten at in any city across the US, at most it gets three stars.  If I limit the comparison to just restaurants in Waco, then it gets a four.

Waco doesn't have too much in the area of upscale dining, so it was nice to see a place that had a bistro atmosphere and could be a place to go to for a special occasion or for a date.  We tried this place out because a friend of mine saw an article for it in the local Waco magazine that was in his hotel room.  I was pleased with the atmosphere and the service was good.

First off I have to say the wine prices were relatively cheap.  Keep in mind: 1) this place is in Waco and 2) I'm used to Dallas prices.

We were provided a basket of bread to snack on before our meal arrived.  This had a "store-bought" taste to it and wasn't served warm.  I think this would have been better warmed up.  The bread also lacked any real flavor.  Meh.

A Caesar salad came out first.  I've had some really good Caesar salads in my day and this was just okay.  Nothing out of the ordinary.  Perhaps some homemade croutons might have been a nice touch.

For my entree I had the 1424 Wellington.  I thought the meat was well prepared, but overall nothing that blew me away.  It's a nice entree that one would be pleased with if they were to order it.

What I do have to give them credit for is the bread pudding dessert.  It was really good.  If you do come by, you have to give this a try.

Overall if we are just talking about Waco, it's a nice restaurant worth checking out.

this was my second time at 1424.  i was really hoping that the last time was just an off night for the cook, but it wasn't.

this evening, we had the shrimp appetizer which was tasty.  it had a bit of spice right at the end that was really good.

for dinner, I had the Ahi special.  I asked for it rare, and it was, but the cook was unable to get a sear on the meat.  it came out slightly grey and slightly cold and not entirely pleasant.  the fish was thin and full of connective tissue.  it was clear that they had gone for a cheaper cut of fish.

my wife had the angel hair pasta with a seafood-tomato sauce.  i was eager to try hers to see if the pasta was as over cooked as it looked. it was.  the pasta was perfectly cooked if one had no teeth or needed to be fed through a tube.  the one shrimp i tasted from the sauce was, on the other hand, over cooked and tough.

we had the mousse cake for dessert.  it had a good flavor, but the cake was dry and it had the consistency of a frozen then thawed to order cake ala Sara Lee.

the only fine dinning aspect of the food was the price.  it seems like the cook is just phoning it in.  I would be embarrassed to take anyone here. its sad that this is what passes for fine dinning in waco.

the waitstaff was friendly and efficient.

Save your money and time and go to III Forks in Addison! Unfulfilling, bland, and overpriced are words that can begin to describe our experience on 11/04/11. I love Waco and my wife and I frequent many different local restaurants.  After last night, our money would have been better spent at the Texas Roadhouse! Notwithstanding the poor quality of the food, service was just as dismally poor of an experience.  Our server, whose name I had to read on the receipt because she wouldn't be bothered to introduce herself at this fine dining establishment, was late to our table and with each infrequent stop she made at our table she couldn't getaway fast enough! Watching her one would think that Miss Alicia, "Not Server of the month", was being timed on how quickly she could dump food on our table and flee! Like I said, III Forks, even Diamond Backs is worth it. If you're not in the mood to spend a pretty penny and want an enjoyable dining experience and great food, DON'T go to 1424 Washington, however, Texas RoadHouse never disappoints!

The food was good, but not 25 dollars a plate good. The service was slow and informal. The guy talked like he should have been waiting tables at the Texas Roadhouse. I ordered the 1424 Wellington. It was good, but not worth 23 dollars. My date ordered a 20 dollar plate of shrimp fettuccine Alfredo. The bread pudding was good, but the bread pudding at carinos is better.  Lower prices and hire some Baylor students that know how to speak properly. I don't think I'll be going back. I can cook this stuff home just as well.

Adrien E from Dallas was right on the money.   Compared to a city that has decent restaurants this place is just OK.   But for Waco, it's really now the only other "fine dining" there is, other than 135 Prime which has "dumbed down" since opening and now has K-Mart lighting..

The EXCELLENT, top notch (compared to any city, IMHO),  Green Room bit the dust.  Now, casual yet great (IMHO) Seite Mares is closed. as well.

We have only two choices left.  Sadly, the chain parking lots are full and  there must not be a market in Waco for great food

Enough ranting...We ate at 1424  last night:

    The GOOD side:
    - Service was prompt and pleasant
    - Ordered the filet mignon special - with blue cheese and mushroom   sauce.  The quality of the meat was very good.
    - The fish (scallops, shrimp, and tilapia) were very fresh tasting
    - House salad with blue cheese dressing was very good - green, crisp and chilled.
--Setting and ambiance pleasant - tablecloths and candles, at least.

    The BAD side:
--No full bar so you are SOL if you want a cocktail - just wine and beer served
--Adrien was right - bread was not freshly made and came cold
--My filet was barely luke warm - perfectly  cooked inside, but the cool .  overall temp distracted a bit from the overall enjoyment,  The mushroom sauce was quite bland and the blue cheese did not seem of very good quality--had no real bite to it.
--Overall, the food lacked flavor..or lacked the proper flavors.   It was all fresh...but underseasoned or poorly seasoned.

The Greek potatoes that the waiter highly recommended were poorly executed.  They tasted like someone just doused them with a grocery store  jar of "greek seasoning".  instead of layering and incorporating flavors.   There was no "crisp" to them at all and classic Greek potatoes are made with rosemary thyme and lemon.  I did not taste those flavors.

Same with the piccata sauce - it had no depth of flavor and was not prepared properly ether.

I think overall - this is a fairly good place...for Waco .   I think that the bones are there to make this a very good, if not excellent restaurant -- but it would probably either take some additional culinary classes or a new chef.   I lean toward the latter - since, IMO, you either have the knack and palate for creating flavors, or you don't.

If I could give a half a star I would. I have eaten here before and my meal was decent. Last week I was will several people and 3 out of 5 of our meals were horrible.  The house salad was great with the house Greek dressing. That was the best thing we ate  Three of us ordered the Wednesday special which was chicken piccata.  The only thing on the plate with any flavor were the capers which, by the way, were the only thing that had anything to do with piccata. There was no sauce whatsoever. When I asked about this missing ingredient the server said the chicken is sautéed in a lemon butter. No it wasn't. It was bone dry and hard as a rock as if it had been in a warming drawer all day. The broccoli was steamed well but again no seasoning. Blah. I told our waiter we were all disappointed. But he made no attempt to correct or offer us anything else. The restaurant was virtually empty. Very sad as Waco has so few fine dining establishments. I hate to see another independent restaurant go under but I can't see this place being open in 6 mos. the service is great but the food sucks. I've had better tasting chicken at KFC. I am not sure I will go again.

We should have known better than to rely on a 4+ star rating on a restaurant in Waco Texas.  It was Good Friday and my wife wanted to eat fish.  We were to be in Waco for a family gathering so I checked yelp and made reservations at 1424 relying on the rating and the supposed  fish offering.  We arrive and the only fish offered was talapia, orange roughy and mahi mahi, both in unappetizing dishes.  So we ordered a cheese and fruit appetizer, which could have come from a Sam's Club dish, a portobello mushroom appetizer that was coated in inedible cheese and a salty marinara sauce, and a 6 oz tenderloin that plate that was marginal at best.  Maybe it was just Waco.  I think instead the previous reviews were from people who had never been outside Waco.  Avoid this restaurant at all costs.

This unique bistro had a cozy and up beat atmosphere with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. On the night of our visit the kitchen was burdened y their first large party since the opening of their additional wing and although we hardly noticed the delay in services, at least 3 different employees apologized individually to us for the it. We had escargot as an appetizer (or first escargot experience), and split a stuffed trout dish for dinner which was a bit too much food for the even the both us to polish off together. Every thing as well seasoned and prepared. We especially LOVED the tortilla soup. It was so good that we regretted having tried such a soup in a city were would only be visiting for a weekend. No other tortilla soup will ever compare. We so enjoyed this restaurant that we debated re-visiting it on our second and final night in Waco. Great atmosphere, nice staff, 10/10 food!
