So, I'll admit it, I'm a bit of a snob. I had really low expectations in finding a really nice meal in Indianapolis. But, wow, 14 West was a surprise, in a good way.

Can I just say LOBSTER MAC & CHEESE? Hellooooo...yeah, I think our party might have ordered more than one and totally had to hold back in ordering more because we actually had entrees coming.

Every person at the table finished the food, from appetizer to entree to dessert.

The service was great, very friendly. Food came out perfectly timed, water glasses refilled efficiently and cocktails kept coming, but not wasn't pushed on us, which was nice.

The only thing that is preventing me from giving it 5-stars is the fact that even though I had reservations, we were seated by the door, which made it awkward between the noise of the restaurant, the hostess/reception counter and the draft from the front door.

But, all in all, great restaurant and even better food. Great location from the convention center and the various hotels downtown.

Ate there last night for the 1st time, and probably the last. Even though we made reservation and there were plenty of open table, for some reason the host put us in a small corner window table next to the kitchen. Needless to say, the wife and I did not appreciate that with all the noise and traffic. After an appetizer, a soup, a salad, 2 seafood entree, a dessert, and 4 cocktails, we ended up with a pretty hefty bill.

To be fair the food was generally good and service was OK. But for that price, I would pick and recommend Oceanaire or Harry&Izzy over this place anytime.

Look for Lori as your excellent waitress at this excellent place. Huge helpings - but hey, nobody talks about the Miami Beach diet here anyway.

My husband and I visited 14 West on our "date night." We arrived at 8:15 pm on a Friday night and we were 1 of 3 couples in the restaurant. This was surprising since we passed several restaurants on the way that had a vibrant crowd. When seated in a booth the waiter left the menus on the booth instead of presenting them to us or placing them on the table. The Shrimp and Grits appetizer was really good and I would recommend it. However, my husband ordered the Salmon and I ordered the Sea Bass and both were just so-so. Especially when considering that both were $30+. We had Key Lime Pie for dessert and it was decent but not out of this world. Overall, the experience was alright but we probably will not go back.

I just went here again for the third time for my Mom's birthday. Of course, it was another great experience. The waiter was very nice and very down to eart. The atmosphere is very quiet, romantic, and intimate. It's pretty dark in there, but we didn't mind. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks. My mom and I took part in the devour downtown menue which was an excellent deal, 3 courses for $30 bucks. My mom had filet and I had the seafood fetuccine which was really good but I did pick out the scallops. I've tried scallops at many different restaurants and just can't get over the texture so this isn't to speak to the quality of the scallops at this restaurant. My mom let me have some of her filet and it was incredible, tender, melt in your mouth steak. Fantastic new england clam chowder which is a soup I don't even like and won't eat unless I'm at 14 west. This is without a doubt my favorite local place. I've never had a bad meal. This was the first time I didn't order the lobster mac and cheese, but for the record, that dish is incredible and an appetizer which I usually order as my entree. Yes, it is pricey, but check out http://restaurant.com for gift certificates on the cheap. Also, I noted on my open table reservation that it was my mom's birthday and both the hostess and waiter wished her a happy birthday. It's nice touches like that that really show the true class of a restaurant and that they really care about their patrons. Park at mall parking right next door, it should only cost 1.50 for up to three hours.

I travel to Indy often, and when I'm eating alone (most don't want to eat so expensively), usually pick 14 West.  I always eat at the bar, always have a great conversation with whatever bartender is working and always just enjoy myself.  The dry vodka martinis are perfect.  The pretzel bread is perfect.  My entree -- whether it's scallops, crabcakes, steak -- is always perfect.  Love this place.

There are so many steakhouses and upscale eateries to choose from downtown Indianapolis, but very few offer something local and serve food produced locally.  Nothing screamed romantic like our mini-Indy babymoon and finally trying out this lovely restaurant.  The menu called my pregnant name as soon as I read: lobster mac&cheese.  Um, hellllllllllllo pregnant ladies of Indy - this is a MUST try!

We decided to start off by splitting a Caesar salad (I promise we aren't cheap, we just didn't want to overeat).  It was crisp, fresh and came out right away (and they split it for us, which I thought was a nice detailed touch).  While I really wanted to try everything on the appetizer menu, I just couldn't decide and knew that my entree along with my side items would definitely fill up my 36 week belly (food just doesn't fit like it used to!).

Not to mention, they indulge your senses with pretzel bread as well.  Sometimes I wonder why bread is a starter...after all, it's SO FILLING and this bread was DEEEE-LISSSSSH!  It was soft and flavorful and came with some awesome spreads.  My hubby's favorite was the spicy Dijon (which he said would be too spicy for me, but I wonder now if he just didn't want to share!).  I enjoyed the herb butter so there is something for everyone which was nice.

For entrees, I got the 8 ounce filet oscar-style and it was MELT IN MY MOUTH deeeelectable!  I was in steak heaven (and I rarely eat red meat).  The whipped potatoes were extremely smooth and a very nice texture.  And, the sauce (not sure exactly what it was) was the perfect touch to bring it all together.

But...I must discuss the one item I came for.  The lobster mac&cheese with brie and parmesian.  The little macs were sliced in half and cooked perfectly, coated with all the beautiful white cheeses.  We were both quite surprised at the amount of lobster that was in there, as well!  They did not skimp and the flavor was intense but not overwhelming.  While it is a very heavy dish, it was the perfect side item to our entrees (my hubby got the lamb and devoured it so fast I couldn't try it).  All I can say is "can I have the recipe??"

Overall, I was incredibly impressed.  We had a 7 p.m. reservation and were seated immediately. Adam, our server, was prompt, polite, and very encouraging but not pushy about the menu.  He was always nearby if we needed him but did not hover. The overall atmosphere was romantic, quiet and absolutely lovely. I would DEFINITELY go back!

The one thing I will say I found odd was the bathroom situation - it was in the basement, SEVERAL steps down a long, cold hallway, which I didn't really like.  But I won't actually complain.  It's just a comment.

I definitely think this is a fine-dining establishment that needs to stay while others (cough cough - St. Elmo's), I couldn't care less if they went.

This is a GREAT date place or an awesome location to celebrate an anniversary, babymoon or other fun, special occasion with a SMALL group.  I would probably also enjoy an evening at the bar indulging in appetizers and lovely drinks (once I'm allowed again) to start off a night out downtown.  Men, take the ladies here for something a little different (Ruth's Chris is definitely getting a run for my money!).

I have a love hate relationship with 14 West.  There are times when I feel it is one of my favorite restaurants, yet there are times when I wonder what the heck is going on in the kitchen.  Perhaps it is the change in chefs.

Anyway, tis the end of halibut season, and I was craving the light fish before the fresh stuff disappeared off menus.  I'm happy to report the meal was delicious. It was served with a summer risotto and vegetables.  As always, it was hard to keep my hands off the delicious pretzel rolls and spicy mustard.  I try to eat as much locally sourced food as I can, and I appreciate a number of their menu items are made with fresh, local ingredients.

Once a week they offer half price bottles of wine.  Also, the bar offers a light happy hour menu.

14 West, I really hope you find your footing - I'm cheering you on.

In a city with a less than thrilling downtown culinary scene, this place stands out. Great service, tasty and sexy food - great cocktails and drinks... and desserts that sounded too good to pass up despite tightening belts... our server boxed them up for us; ice cream and all!

In looking for a new steakhouse to try in Indy, I stumbled upon this place. I had the crab-stuffed grouper, and it was to die for. Moreover, I love the fact that their delicious fares are locally produced. The ambiance  was cozy and romantic as well. The only problem-- I was one of maybe 8 patrons there (a Thursday at dinner time). Hence my writing this review-- A place like this should not be overlooked!

After reviewing their large menu online and hearing wonderful things about their lobster macaroni and cheese I was really excited to go here over Valentine's Day weekend.

However, when we got there we discovered that they had a special Valentine's menu and there was no lobster macaroni and cheese to be found. Also, they somehow lost our reservation despite calling in and requesting a booth. We were still given a table right away though.

For our appetizer we chose the shrimp cocktail. There were 5 large shrimps that tasted really good and fresh. The sauce was good too with a lot of horseradish.

For our second course I had the berry salad which was filled with strawberries, blueberries, and goat cheese. I was very happy with my salad. The pretzel bread was also brought out to us at this point and they were good too.

For my third course I had the lamb dish. I guess I should have been more careful when reading the description. I love lamb chops and somehow assumed that this was what I was ordering. However, when I received it, it looked like a fancy beef stew. Unfortunately, it also tasted like beef stew too. There was nothing special about this dish at all.

For desert I had the banana foster which was delicious. My boyfriend had the creme brulee which was also very good.

Overall, the food was pretty good and the service was very friendly. However at $79 a couple, definitely not worth it! I've had much better food for a fraction of the cost.

14 West is a favorite of mine in Indy. Of the many times that I've frequented this restaurant, the food has been disappointing once. It was as if the boss was out of town and left the summer intern in charge. But before that one time and since then, I've been very happy with the food and drink - quality and quantity. This restaurant is dependable. I don't think that just because I'm a mac 'n cheese fanatic. (The lobster mac 'n cheese is noted as "award-winning" on the menu, and it's good.) But, I really go here for the entrees - and the sauces, yum - specifically, the scallops, Chilean sea bass... actually, everything is good. The only thing I would skip at this restaurant is the ahi tuna appetizer (weird taco-like seasoning).

Can't-go-wrong Order: the crab cakes, goat cheese and arugula salad special (ubiquitous but really good here!), sea bass, and apple strudel.
Deals: 1/2 price appetizers at the bar 5-10pm M-F, 1/2 price martinis on W

This review is for the Sunday brunch buffet.  You can see from my three previous reviews that I really enjoy dining at 14 West.  They need some work for their breakfast.

I'm on their email list and I received an announcement about their first breakfast buffet.  It said "Drinks are included in the Buffet."  I assumed that included milk and OJ. Well we get our bill and it did not.  I had my iphone with me and pointed it out to our waitress in a calm manor and she spoke with the manager Rhiannon and cleared it from our bill.

Things were a little hectic there.  14 West is small, which is part of it's appeal, however it was too small to service a buffet.  The staff was not very organized.  They had a very large crowd there and I am not sure if they were ready to handle it.  Our waitress was nice and apologized for the delay in getting our drinks.  She was doing her best considering the chaos.

The food was good, not great, just good.  Which I expect a little more from my past experience and the price we paid.  I understand they allowed kids to join, which might explain the eggo style waffles.  The coffee was very good.

I will gladly come back here for dinner, but if I want a breakfast buffet in Indianapolis.  The 120 West Fresh Market Grill in the Hilton is by far superior.

14 West does the white table cloth experience well.  The service is refined and they are working a classic Sinatra-era decor.

I consider myself a mac 'n cheese connoisseur, especially when it comes lobster mac 'n cheese so when I saw it on the menu, I had to try it.  I've also had the seafood fettuccine.  Both times, the seafood was a bit rubbery.  I understand that Indiana is land-locked and all, but if there is a white table cloth then I expect fresh fish - which is not quite what I got.  However, the fettuccine was extremely rich and a great dish by itself.

I am going to give this place the benefit of the doubt and say they were having a bad night or we just got the one horrible waitress.

Reservations at 830 and were finished with entrees by 9:00. I have never felt more rushed at a nice restaurant in my life. The food was average considering we were force fed. I had to ask our waitress what the specials were and she described them like the combo meal at Wendy's. There was not a moment when we didn't have food on our table.

We talked to the manager on out way out and he assured this is not normal. This was definitely not a great anniversary meal. We let the Conrad desk know to be weary of recommending guests to this place.

Not wanting to try another steakhouse, I needed a place for a couple of birthdays.  14 West was listed as a best place in the city, so I made reservations. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed.

The menu is all over the place, but has a little southern flare.  The southern style chicken was half good and half dry.  My colleagues reported their food to be good, but no raves.  The lobster ravioli wasn't amazing, it was much too rich/heavy and really wasn't any better than the non-award-winning versions out there.

I would come back to give other menu items a shot, even though there are some other promising restaurants in the area.  Service isn't exactly refined, though refined-casual is appropriate.  Dining room was empty, but the bar was full for the football game.

3 stars for average food.  It's one of those middle-of-the-road places if you can't decide on a genre.

They say good things come in small packages, and at 14 West fine dining comes in a small, intimate setting.  Chef Tracy Lemmonds presents beautiful, well-crafted dishes, while the elegant atmosphere and service round out the dining experience.

From the appetizer menu, my table enjoyed Sesame Crusted Ahi, Tempura Battered Calamari, and Lobster Mac-n-Cheese--three distinctly different dishes that represent the somewhat eclectic menu.  The rare Ahi was complemented by a wonderful combination of flavors and textures--spicy, sweet and salty flavors of mango, wasabi and soy glaze with the crunch of sesame seeds and tender, toothsome soba noodles.  Yet despite all the flavors and textures, the steak-like rare Ahi was still the star.  Without question, the calamari was the best I've had in recent memory.  Too often, calamari is overcooked, giving it a rubbery texture.  But this was tender, and I liked the combination of the asian-style tempura batter with the tangy apricot chipotle sauce. The Lobster Mac was everything macaroni and cheese should be.  Think rich, creamy and decadent, then add perfectly cooked lobster claws.  And just try to save room for the rest of your meal!

From the second course offerings we chose the Iceberg Wedge Salad and New England Clam Chowder.  The wedge salad was more flavorful than most, with a Maytag bleu cheese dressing that had an assertive dill flavor and a garnish of chopped red onions.  Personally, I loved the combination, but some at my table thought it was a bit much.  We could all agree, however, that the chowder was excellent.  The texture was just slightly less thick than traditional clam chowder, but no less creamy, and it had a wonderful smokey bacon flavor that while noticeable, did not overpower the sweetness of the crab.

When the Lobster Rabini entree arrived at the table, I was worried that the flavor would not stand up to the magnificent (although phallic) presentation.  I had nothing to worry about.  Tender lobster tail, jumbo shrimp, sherry caper sauce.  What's not to like?  Nothing.  It was perfection.

And although the presentation of the Lamb Shank (locally grown at Viking Farms) was less elegant, it was no less impressive.  There's something about a huge plate of bone-in meat that just makes you want to put your face in it.  But I managed to show some restraint and use my fork (no knife necessary, this was fall-off-the-bone tender).  The lamb is accompanied with a corn risotto that really works with the strong wine and lamb flavors.

The Chilean Sea Bass was the only disappointment of the evening.  Although the menu says "seared" it was battered and fried.  What a terrible way to treat such a lovely fish!  It tasted fine, but sea bass should never be "just fine".  I did enjoy the complexity of the red wine risotto that it was served atop, however it was slightly undercooked.  Another minute or so in the pan would have created risotto perfection.

Of course no meal is complete without dessert.  If you read my earlier post about Tavern on South, you know that I have very high standards when it comes to sweets.  14 West did not disappoint.  The carrot cake with Grand Marnier frosting is quite simply the best carrot cake I've ever had.  I would challenge even carrot-cake haters to find fault with it.  The creme brulee was traditionally prepared and had the perfect not too thin, not too thick texture.  And our server even noted that it was my birthday and dressed the plate accordingly.

For superior service, great ambiance and impressive food, I give 14 West on overall rating of 4.

14 West was my dinner destination on a recent trip to Indy. Located in the downtown area we entered to be greeted by the hostess who rattled off a list of wants, needs and desires. I had no idea what she was talking about until I remembered who I was with as my friend as a very specific list of criteria as to where he will and won't sit in a restaurant.

The good news was it must have been late for dinner in Indy (8:30 on a Saturday night) as we were one of the few tables in the places. A large bar is what you first notice and then a smattering of tables and booths in the main dining room.

We did get seated at the perfect table, right by the windows. Our server Sarah was fantastic- pleasant , affable and so willing to help us while we visited her city- she even suggested some other bars we should stop in and see while we were there.

We started with the fried green tomatoes. They were pretty good although not the best I've had. The corn sauce and bacon added a nice contrast.

Next up? A NY strip steak for me and a filet for my friend. The steaks were fine (nothing special) but maybe coming from Chicago and the great steakhouses there jaded us a bit! As a side-we ordered some of their award winning lobster mac and cheese. Delicious! Made with brie cheese and large chunks of lobster claw this was pretty much perfection in a dish! A must have if you come here.

We also saved room for dessert and went with the apple strudel based on Sara's suggestion. Two large pieces of strudel (nutty and chewy) and two scoops of vanilla ice cream. The perfect ending to our dinner.

So the next time you are in Indy and looking for a good spot for dinner that has great service, check out 14 West. I think you'll be happy you did.

Our experience at 14 West after a Colts game this season was nearly flawless.  The restaurant isn't typically open on Sundays, but for a private event the restaurant was open and we took advantage.  We bought a Living Social coupon a few days before we went which made the prices much easier to swallow.  The first thing to know about this restaurant is that it really is expensive.  For us, it needs to something special to pay $35 for an entrée.  But, for something special, this is a great place.  The décor is pretty, but not overdone and the service was great.  Our server was somewhat new to the city and was super friendly.  At times maybe slightly over chatty, but we earned that since one person in our party was very, very late.

The menu offered to us on that night was limited because the restaurant is not usually open on Sundays.  It was still a good menu, though, and we can highly suggest the lobster mac 'n' cheese!  The cheese combination made a unique taste for mac 'n' cheese.  The lobster is almost unnecessary, but it is a fun signature appetizer.

We'll be back - we just need a great reason to do so first because of the prices.

14 West is one of the few non-chain restaurants in downtown Indy.  They have an upscale atmosphere, but you can definitely go in jeans and feel comfortable.

It's a great place to have lunch or dinner and the specials are always priced fairly.  My fav is the Steak Frittes are my personal favorite.  Ask for Heather F. as it seems like she is always there with a smile and something in the works.

Many people don't realize this, but 14 West also has a great boutique hotel on the upper levels and spaces for group meetings and large parties.  I did a fundraiser there with 200+ people and it went off with flying colors.  The staff was really easy to work with and coordinate all the moving parts and everybody had great things to say about the venue.

This is a hidden gem to impress a date or just kick back for a few signature cocktails at the bar.

Right away, your meal starts out on a high point with the arrival of the most delicious pretzel bread rolls and garlic butter.  The rolls are served warm and the butter just melts as soon as you spread it.  This has honestly been my favorite part of every meal I've had at 14 West.

I really enjoyed their Pork Chop, served with carmelized onions on a bed of feta mashed potatoes.  All of their dishes, including a very creamy yam bisque, are flavorful. What really stands out to me about their food are the different flavors they use and how they combine them in their dishes.  Take their creamed corn with andouille sausage: who'd ever think to put sausage and corn in the same dish?  But what a great idea!

It's an upscale atmosphere and the staff are attentive and polite.  My only caveat to the review:  take heed when eating their home-made after dinner mints.  They look beautiful and I'm sure they taste delicious, but I was too overcome with the sensation of sugar scraping every surface of every tooth in my mouth and trying not go into a diabetic coma to notice the taste.  I'm pretty sure this is the spoonful of sugar Mary Poppins was referring to.

Great new restaurant in downtown Indy - located around the corner from the Palamino restaurant and underneath the 14 West Suites.

This is a fairly new restaurant (as of this writing) and the food was delicious. For starters, they bring out some pretzel bread rolls served with butter, chive butter and a horseradish-mustard sauce. Beware - they are addictive! For appetizers, we requested Lobster Ravioli (normally an entree), calamari and crab cakes. All were excellent, though I would recommend the lobster ravioli over the others. The caesar salad was excellent (just the right amount of dressing). I had the Free Range Chicken Scallopine which was served with a truffle sauce and fried shoestring sweet potatoes. We ordered the lobster brie mac & cheese as a side for the table to share.

Overall, I was very impressed with the food, the service and the ambiance.

I wanted to explore the drinking possibilities of this town but had to work

Had a free night to dine with my Nephew while the rest of our Indy 500 crew of 15 went to the Snake Pit Black Tie Ball.  Bah Humbug!!  Like I'm gonna pack formal wear for an Indy 500 weekend!  So I searched yelp for something high end so we would have an experience to brag about as well. 14 happened to be 1/2 block from our Hampton Hotel, sweeeet!  And how sweet it was.

Since it was just us two guys we opted for the bar instead of the formalish dining room.  Good move!  I wish I could remember our bartender/servers name, but most everyone at the bar knew it, very friendly/local vibe for an upscale place. He was well informed re; the menu and put us out of towners at ease. I started with the spinach salad topped with a medium poached egg, nice addition. I also enjoyed the Indiana free range pork chop, a tad overcooked for my preference, but still very good. It was accompanied by the most incredible feta infused mashed potatoes. I am very partial to feta cheese so I was in Indiana Heaven! Nephew selected the lamb shank which was cooked to perfection, and came with polenta. Had a nice Hayman and Hill Pinot Noir that went well with both entres.

Prices are what you would expect for the food and  ambiance, but not outrageous. The Ball earned the better bragging rights as the Ohio Players were the house band for the night, but no regrets on our part damn it!

Formerly the Malibu on Maryland, this fine restaurant and bar attracts an upscale, downtown dining crowd, as well as the after-work, cocktail seeker.

Admittedly, I have never dined at the restaurant, but I have been one of the after-work crowd at times, and have also visite the bar in the evening and visited the luxury suites upstairs.

The upper level suites--essentially luxury suites that would be similar to those found in a high end hotel--are reputable among a corporate and celebrtiy travel crowd that seek the privacy and quality offered with these types of rooms. They feature granite countertops and other luxuriuos features (hot tub on the deck) that make a stay very nice.

I have known several people over the years who have worked at 14 West and I've always understood them to be very knowledgable about their food and wines. The bar is a great place to meet downtown after work.

Quite enjoyable. Had the surf and turf, which was kobe beef slices with shrimp and bearnaise. Sat at the bar, bartender was attentive and helpful. Will definitely return. Only downside was a couple of random d-bags at the bar spewing cringe-worthy statements. Not sure I can blame the restaurant for that.

It's been awhile since I've been to 14 West but decided to go back for Indy Restaurant Week. So glad I did!

Small restaurant with nice, sophisticated atmosphere. We ordered off the special menu. Crispy fried oysters w/cheesy brussel sprouts was awesome (and I don't even like brussel sprouts). Gunthrop farms duck confit w/cherry reduction was cooked to perfection -- falling off the bone and so flavorful. The viennese apple strudel w/vanilla ice cream was a perfect finish.

Wine tip: really enjoyed the White Haven Sauvignon Blanc (from New Zealand)

Food was pretty good, prices seemed in line with other higher end restaurants. Wine list was pretty solid, but by no means the best in town.

New menu sounds like it will have some good changes.

This place was close to the Downtown Indy Marriott, so it was convenient for our group of 30 to be able to walk here, eat, and sight-see afterward. They did an awesome job accommodating us and even created a personalized menu for our group! Very welcoming and nice to us students.

We were basically on a budget of $25/person, so most of us chose to either get soup/salad + main entree or main entree + dessert. I got to try all three, thanks to my generous friends! I tried the 14 West Signature Lobster Corn Chowder, 6 oz. Filet, and Chocolate Mousse Cake. The pretzel rolls here are so yummy, I had never had pretzel rolls before. We asked for refills at least 2-3 times.  I think everyone around the table ordered the Filet, but some people didn't get theirs cooked to the right temp. We were also sad because we didn't get the fried onions! My steak was okay, still prefer Taste of Texas or Pappas Bros though..

The Lobster Corn Chowder was good, but Mark's Corn Chowder will always be my fave. We were pretty full after all the pretzel rolls and steak, so we didn't finish the dessert entirely. The cake + toffee crusted vanilla ice cream was really quite tasty..currently reminding me of Restaurant August's Napoleon of Nougatine..mmm!

The decor was nice with Christmas lights in early January and the wait-staff provided excellent service. I'd visit again (but probably not for the steak) if I'm ever back in Indy.

This place is TOP-NOTCH! I've dined here a few times, but until last night, I forgot how good the food is here. 14 WEST (Formerly Malibu) has the best appetizers of any restaurant I have dined at. Our party of seven shared the pretzel roll, brocolli, and crab cakes. They have the BEST crab cakes ever! These crab cakes are much better than any 5-star restaurant----yes, better than Hugos, McCormicks, etc.

Let's get to the entree. Tuna Pad Thai---simply amazing! To go along with the Tuna, we shared Lobster Mashed Potatos----yeah, the Chef, Layton, is one of the most innovative chefs I've come across. I mean seriously, who would ever think of Lobster mashed potatos----incredible.

Great ambience, great service (It helps when you're dining with the owner), and a creative wine list. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I took my dad to 14 West for a pre-Colts game dinner.  14 West isn't normally open on Sunday, but opens for business on days with a Colts home game.  As a result, 14 West offers an abbreviated menu.  What a shame since one of the reasons I had picked 14 West for dinner was their selection of locally-raised duck, chicken and lamb entrees.  Nevertheless, my dad and I found enough on the menu to choose from.

For starters, we ordered their signature Lobster Mac-n-Cheese app.  It was very flavorful and cheesey with a blend of brie, parmesan and white cheddar cheeses.  Most importantly, they didn't skimp on the moist, tender lobster claw meat.  This was easily the best "high end" mac-n-cheese I've ever had and worth the $15 tag.  For our entrees, my dad ordered the 16 oz T-bone, medium-rare and I chose the 12 oz NY strip, medium-rare.  This is where the wheels fell off of the 14 West cart.  The T-bone appeared to be cut from the very end of that part of the cow and was cut to about 3/4 inch thickness.  As a result, the t-bone was not at all prominent in the steak and didn't add much flavor to the meat.   I'm not sure if 14 West cuts their steaks on premises or they come already butchered.  Regardless, the choice to serve a thin cut t-bone with minimal bone was a huge error and definitely not worth the $34 price.   More problematic was the fact that the lack of adequate thickness of the steak resulted in it coming out overdone.  My steak was a nice thick cut and cooked to a proper medium-rare.  It was topped with Maytag blue cheese and red onion confit.  The salty cheese sharply complemented the meaty goodness and gave the steak a pleasing flavor contrast.  While not the best steak I've ever had, it was very satisfying.  To wash down our steaks, we had a bottle of 2006 Burgess Cellars cabernet sauvignon from Napa.  It possessed the requisite robust, full-bodied cab characteristics with a nice finish.  The wine was very drinkable and improved as it aired out in the glass.

Despite the problems with my dad's steak, service was exemplary.  Our server, Pahua, was friendly, attentive, professional and did everything right to try to make up for the flawed meal.  Same goes for the manager on duty.  14 West delivered in terms of service and were definitely customer-focused in this perspective.  For this reason only, I'd be willing to give 14 West another chance...but on a day they offer their full menu.

If you like oysters, get them elsewhere. The appetizer here overwhelms them with tomato relish (seems like a jelly to me, not a relish) & a supposedly horseradish cream sauce. Not that I was not warned: the menu said what would be there, just not the "overwhelms" part.  Scallops too are covered with more other stuff than someone who genuinely loves seafood would want. Same, I think, with everything but the steaks. Server was wonderful, foods served promptly, display, well, it seems to be the kind of place that puts things very precisely on plates for eye appeal rather, IMHO, than the kind of place that puts things very precisely in recipes because they taste good together (and leaves out that which does not contribute).  Much food is local, and the menu does lay out in reasonable detail what they intend to do to your food. Not a bad place to try, if you can afford the kind of place that charges $26 - 38 for an entree.

14 West is a phenomenal restaurant, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to celebrate a special occasion with a perfect meal. It is quite pricey for my pocketbook at least; however, I do believe you get what you pay for.

We started out our meal with an amazing appetizer and side dish, which actually overshadowed the entrees themselves. We ordered the Calamari, which tasted light, crispy, and extremely fresh. Next, and by far the best part of our meal was the lobster mashed potatoes. It sounds strange, and disgusting, but I do not have words for this mouthwatering side dish, it was probably the single best item I have ever eaten at a restaurant.

Our entrees were very good, but less memorable than the first two dishes I mentioned. In summation everything was excellent, and the experience as a package was wonderful. The ambiance, and atmosphere are sleek, modern and sophisticated, while the great food and doting service complimented the surroundings. Plan to spend a couple of hours there, enjoying everything from the food to the drinks to chatting with the friendly wait staff.

Pretzel bread tasty. Had a great salad but sashimi tun appetizer, while good, was not extraordinary. Decent ambiance and pretty good food overall. Our wait was nil on a Weds night at 8:30.

A good restaurant downtown that allows for ample room comfortable for groups or small parties.  I had the lobster mac-n-cheese, recommended as a house specialty. It was good but not greater than I've had at other restaurants.  I would recommend eating the torte for dessert. It may look small but packs quite the chocolate punch.

The service at this place was really good. And I must say, compared to all the other restaurant pricing I saw in the mid-west I thought it was fairly expensive. In my mind I was thinking "$36 for ahi pad thai - it better be the best I've ever had" Well, it was not the best I'd ever had, but it was HUGE. The food here was really big and I thought that was nice. The taste of the steak frites was just OK in my book. The asparagus and pesto veggies nothing specialt. The pretzel bread here was amazing. I would fly back to Indianapolis for the lobster mashed potatoes and the southern fried oysters were outta control.  Nice wine list, nice atmosphere. California style fine dining in the midwest - I was quite impressed.

This New American cuisine features clear, crisp flavors that stand out. The incredible pretzel rolls are a perfect preview to West's pungent tastes, especially if you eat them smudged with the throat-warming Dijon mustard
