14 reviews for 14 West
Food was pretty good, prices seemed in line with other higher end restaurants. Wine list was pretty solid, but by no means the best in town.
New menu sounds like it will have some good changes.
Had a free night to dine with my Nephew while the rest of our Indy 500 crew of 15 went to the Snake Pit Black Tie Ball. Bah Humbug!! Like I'm gonna pack formal wear for an Indy 500 weekend! So I searched yelp for something high end so we would have an experience to brag about as well. 14 happened to be 1/2 block from our Hampton Hotel, sweeeet! And how sweet it was.
Since it was just us two guys we opted for the bar instead of the formalish dining room. Good move! I wish I could remember our bartender/servers name, but most everyone at the bar knew it, very friendly/local vibe for an upscale place. He was well informed re; the menu and put us out of towners at ease. I started with the spinach salad topped with a medium poached egg, nice addition. I also enjoyed the Indiana free range pork chop, a tad overcooked for my preference, but still very good. It was accompanied by the most incredible feta infused mashed potatoes. I am very partial to feta cheese so I was in Indiana Heaven! Nephew selected the lamb shank which was cooked to perfection, and came with polenta. Had a nice Hayman and Hill Pinot Noir that went well with both entres.
Prices are what you would expect for the food and ambiance, but not outrageous. The Ball earned the better bragging rights as the Ohio Players were the house band for the night, but no regrets on our part damn it!
This place was close to the Downtown Indy Marriott, so it was convenient for our group of 30 to be able to walk here, eat, and sight-see afterward. They did an awesome job accommodating us and even created a personalized menu for our group! Very welcoming and nice to us students.
We were basically on a budget of $25/person, so most of us chose to either get soup/salad + main entree or main entree + dessert. I got to try all three, thanks to my generous friends! I tried the 14 West Signature Lobster Corn Chowder, 6 oz. Filet, and Chocolate Mousse Cake. The pretzel rolls here are so yummy, I had never had pretzel rolls before. We asked for refills at least 2-3 times. I think everyone around the table ordered the Filet, but some people didn't get theirs cooked to the right temp. We were also sad because we didn't get the fried onions! My steak was okay, still prefer Taste of Texas or Pappas Bros though..
The Lobster Corn Chowder was good, but Mark's Corn Chowder will always be my fave. We were pretty full after all the pretzel rolls and steak, so we didn't finish the dessert entirely. The cake + toffee crusted vanilla ice cream was really quite tasty..currently reminding me of Restaurant August's Napoleon of Nougatine..mmm!
The decor was nice with Christmas lights in early January and the wait-staff provided excellent service. I'd visit again (but probably not for the steak) if I'm ever back in Indy.
This place is TOP-NOTCH! I've dined here a few times, but until last night, I forgot how good the food is here. 14 WEST (Formerly Malibu) has the best appetizers of any restaurant I have dined at. Our party of seven shared the pretzel roll, brocolli, and crab cakes. They have the BEST crab cakes ever! These crab cakes are much better than any 5-star restaurant----yes, better than Hugos, McCormicks, etc.
Let's get to the entree. Tuna Pad Thai---simply amazing! To go along with the Tuna, we shared Lobster Mashed Potatos----yeah, the Chef, Layton, is one of the most innovative chefs I've come across. I mean seriously, who would ever think of Lobster mashed potatos----incredible.
Great ambience, great service (It helps when you're dining with the owner), and a creative wine list. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Right away, your meal starts out on a high point with the arrival of the most delicious pretzel bread rolls and garlic butter. The rolls are served warm and the butter just melts as soon as you spread it. This has honestly been my favorite part of every meal I've had at 14 West.
I really enjoyed their Pork Chop, served with carmelized onions on a bed of feta mashed potatoes. All of their dishes, including a very creamy yam bisque, are flavorful. What really stands out to me about their food are the different flavors they use and how they combine them in their dishes. Take their creamed corn with andouille sausage: who'd ever think to put sausage and corn in the same dish? But what a great idea!
It's an upscale atmosphere and the staff are attentive and polite. My only caveat to the review: take heed when eating their home-made after dinner mints. They look beautiful and I'm sure they taste delicious, but I was too overcome with the sensation of sugar scraping every surface of every tooth in my mouth and trying not go into a diabetic coma to notice the taste. I'm pretty sure this is the spoonful of sugar Mary Poppins was referring to.
Food is excellent. Excellent Service. This is an upscale restaurant for dinner, but a great place for lunch as the lunch menu is considerably less than the dinner menu, and you get all the amenities that go with eating at a fine restaurant. The daily lunch special is 8.00 with a varied menu. 14 West has one of the best outdoor seating areas downtown; it is romantic and relaxing, framed by tasteful wrought iron, and located just off the main streets, and so is a little more quiet and intimate than some of the other outside eating areas downtown. It also is a great place for a business lunch.
The service at this place was really good. And I must say, compared to all the other restaurant pricing I saw in the mid-west I thought it was fairly expensive. In my mind I was thinking "$36 for ahi pad thai - it better be the best I've ever had" Well, it was not the best I'd ever had, but it was HUGE. The food here was really big and I thought that was nice. The taste of the steak frites was just OK in my book. The asparagus and pesto veggies nothing specialt. The pretzel bread here was amazing. I would fly back to Indianapolis for the lobster mashed potatoes and the southern fried oysters were outta control. Nice wine list, nice atmosphere. California style fine dining in the midwest - I was quite impressed.
Formerly the Malibu on Maryland, this fine restaurant and bar attracts an upscale, downtown dining crowd, as well as the after-work, cocktail seeker.
Admittedly, I have never dined at the restaurant, but I have been one of the after-work crowd at times, and have also visite the bar in the evening and visited the luxury suites upstairs.
The upper level suites--essentially luxury suites that would be similar to those found in a high end hotel--are reputable among a corporate and celebrtiy travel crowd that seek the privacy and quality offered with these types of rooms. They feature granite countertops and other luxuriuos features (hot tub on the deck) that make a stay very nice.
I have known several people over the years who have worked at 14 West and I've always understood them to be very knowledgable about their food and wines. The bar is a great place to meet downtown after work.
It is all about the FRESHLY BAKED rolls. The mustard is spicy, but not Rathskeller spicy. I really enjoyed the mustard. The service there is top notch. My water glass was filled almost after every sip. I had the veal and my wife had the chicken dumplings. It is expensive, but you do not go home hungry. It is nice and romantic. It's small, so reservations are a must. I suggest parking in Circle Center Garage. It's $1.50 for the first 3 hours.
Great new restaurant in downtown Indy - located around the corner from the Palamino restaurant and underneath the 14 West Suites.
This is a fairly new restaurant (as of this writing) and the food was delicious. For starters, they bring out some pretzel bread rolls served with butter, chive butter and a horseradish-mustard sauce. Beware - they are addictive! For appetizers, we requested Lobster Ravioli (normally an entree), calamari and crab cakes. All were excellent, though I would recommend the lobster ravioli over the others. The caesar salad was excellent (just the right amount of dressing). I had the Free Range Chicken Scallopine which was served with a truffle sauce and fried shoestring sweet potatoes. We ordered the lobster brie mac & cheese as a side for the table to share.
Overall, I was very impressed with the food, the service and the ambiance.
This New American cuisine features clear, crisp flavors that stand out. The incredible pretzel rolls are a perfect preview to West's pungent tastes, especially if you eat them smudged with the throat-warming Dijon mustard
I went here for a birthday dinner and thought it was great. My super sweet husband ordered flowers to be delivered to me at the restaurant and the staff set them out on the table to be there when we were seated. The food was great, although not the best I've ever had. The warm pear and goat cheese salad was incredible though. And we got this insane Smores dessert that was rich and beautiful and decadent.
I've dined at this restaurant twice and both times has an exceptional dining experience.
14 West is downtown and a good alternative to the other upscale restaurants in the area which are generally larger, louder, and more crowded. At 14 West, you have a more personal dining experience and the service is among the best I have ever received. The staff is knowledgable and courteous.
The menu changes and I was a bit disappointed to see that the dry aged steaks on the menu last year have been taken off the menu, but there are alternatives for every palate on the menu - lamb, fish, shellfish, steak, chicken, duck, etc.
During my recent visit, I enjoyed a very interesting salad with prociutto wrapped duck and warm shitake mushrooms and large scallops over a cream corn concoction as my entree. The food was excellent, but a bit rich, definitely an indulgence.
The wine list is very comprehensive and features only the finest quality wines.
Unfortunately, this restaurant does not offer many dessert wines, but the ruby port is excellent.
this was was only ok. we went for lunch during my conference. j really liked her burger w/ the pretzel bread. i had the chicken samish that i could have gotten for 1/2 the price at some diner. for dessert, we had a blackberry bread pudding that came w/ a choco ice cream. it looked like BARF but tasted pretty good. menu is pretty limited during lunch and there weren't that many options.
