I love this place! Their Cinnamon Roll French Toast is yummy without the really oily, eggy texture that lots of places have. I always get the 14 Carrot Special as a scramble with tofu instead of chicken. The avocado and mushrooms are always really fresh and yummy, and their shredded home fries are the best!
The owner, Terry, treats me like family. The best breakfast/brunch spot in Seattle!
Went for brunch today.
Ordered the Greek scramble and got an omelet, which was a bit of a disappointment. Altogether the veggies and feta should have added up to a pretty flavorful bite, but there really wasn't any seasoning whatsoever. It was quite the bland affair.
I like the space and service was fine.
Met some fellow crew mates here for a brunch on Saturday afternoon, we were seated right away with our group of friends. Coffee and water soon followed the waitress! Service was fast and very courteous!
I live very close to this spot so it was a nice and convenient walk. I got the simple bacon and eggs breakfast. There were a few moments of... wanting to drain my plate from grease and dab my bacon, but I refrained to maintain friendships. Other than that - after a 50 mile jog or 9k meter row - I'd eat here again!
Or next time get the fruit bowl! : )
While the hus and I were taking a birthing class over in Eastlake last Sunday, we stopped here for lunch with another couple from the class as it was only two blocks away.
We were seated in the back, right next to the kitchen, yet they somehow easily managed to ignore us for a full 20 min before coming to take our order and bring us drinks. Excuse me, but you have two pregnant women who are about to pop & your restaurant is practically empty, so it's not like you're so swamped you can't bring us a f**king water. Pardon my French...but crafting a person from scratch is is thirsty work.
30 minutes passed after we placed our order and still no food. So now it's 1:50 and we have to be back in 10 mins. Admittedly, we didn't really notice how appalling the service was at first, since we were chatting and having a good time, but when we noticed we had been there for 50 minutes, and the only thing on the table was water we were all pissed.
When we asked for our order to go - the owner and her son got instantly bitchy, saying that our order was now up and they didn't want to have to put it in boxes. WTF?!
We actually had to argue with them to get them to transfer our food from a plate to a box, because they felt like they wouldn't get a full tip from us and we had taken up an hour in their restaurant. Give me a break!! I'm going to give you a shitty tip b/c you're rude, have poor service and have no idea how to treat customers, not because my order is suddenly to go and I don't have to leave a full service tip now. Ugh!
Pancakes, french toast, omelets, scrambles, eggs benedict . . . 14 Carrot does all these deliciously and with a twist (like the eggs benny with avocado and turkey). Good-sized portions. Their freezer jam rocks. The best entrees have come from the specials boards. I've been here many times and always had good service. I also like that the walls feature local art, and the atmosphere is bright and cheerful.
I live in a new neighborhood now, and 14 Carrot is one of the few things I miss about Eastlake.
I live just a few blocks from this place, so I've been there a few times. I haven't been entirely impressed with their service or their food, to be honest. I used to be in Food Service and have done everything from cooking to waitressing, so I know that it's not that hard to be at least cordial to customers, nor is it hard to cook scrambled eggs without making them taste like rubber. The pancakes, though they tasted fine, blocked me up for hours. I was full for about 9 hours from just eating two rubbery eggs and two small pancakes... pretty creepy right?
I'll probably go again, because it's so close to my house, but I would advise: don't order the house coffee (it tastes like butt) instead order espresso from the dudes with the cart outside (which, might I add are ALWAYS the heighth of friendliness! and I'm not being sarcastic) , and just don't expect to be greeted by a friendly smile from the waitstaff, unless you count the busboy (or man, really) as he seemed more than happy to wait on us..
We had brunch with some friends, when the Portage Bay Cafe was crawling with hungry-looking people waiting outside. We asked if they were all waiting, and the looks on their faces said it all. Yes, we're waiting, f--k off you are annoying us even more! :) Fair enough...
Our friends suggested 14 Carrot, which was nearby. It was crowded but we were seated immediately. We had a table next to the windows, and it was really hot that morning. There was a sad, standing fan on a countertop, at the other end of the room. There were a lot of people in there, hot weather, joke of a fan...
I wasn't uncomfortable but a little AC would have been GREAT.
I tried the chorizo omelette. It was an enormous pile with buttered toast and hash browns. And, my favorite jam in the world: FREEZER JAM! YES! The omelette was good--black beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, enveloped in fluffy egg. The chorizo, however...not good. It had the consistency of what I envision scrapple to be. Close to ground beef but....not. A little tough, a little questionable, and definitely not what I look for in chorizo.
The coffee was surprisingly good--smooth. The service was decent but not great. Probably our first and last trip there...
I had a good lunch here recently. I wouldn't trek across town to come here, but it's a nice neighborhood joint.
I ordered their avocado & turkey sandwich, which was good but not too exciting. A selling point for me was that it came with cream cheese, but sadly there was too little on it. I did enjoy the side of fruit that came with it, which was a nice change of pace from the potato chips or fries that one might get at other restaurants.
They had some interesting-sounding specials on the board and I will probably come back to try their breakfast sometime, despite the uneven reviews from other Yelpers. The service was fast and friendly, which is why I'm giving them four stars instead of three.
We have probably been here 30 times for weekend brunch. So obviously we like it! Well, it was also just one block from our old house. The nice thing about going to the same place, you've tried most of the menu and you know your favorites.
It seems like we flirt between feta-spinach scramble and Joe's special. But we always always order the Tahini French toast! It is absolutely delicious. The powder sugar sweetened warm tahini just has such a unique texture and taste! Tahini is basically sesame butter, so it is packed with goodness and energy! You might feel the urge to climb a wall afterwords so it's best to share this:) This order comes with fresh fruits and yogurt, which is very refreshing!
Note: At 14 carrot they serve cafe vita coffee, I love breakfast spots that serve espresso, rather than just drip :)
My friend and fellow Yelper Mike T. (of Boston) has a distinct dislike for the Greeks (he claims to have been the subject of an assassination attempt in Athens in the fall of 2000), I find this prejudice unjustified, this supposed assassination attempt unsupported, and hold up the 14 Carrot Cafe as proof of the Greeks' worth - with omelets this good the Hellenic Republic cannot be all bad.
The food was well proportioned, quite tasty, and the service was prompt and polite.
I really don't understand the bad reviews. I live in the neighborhood and always take visiting friends here and we have never had anything bad or any complaints. Service has been great and friendly, and I was never hassled for a tip. Well, the first time I went there the cinnamon roll was as hard as a rock, but everything else has been great and their carrot cake is to die for!
I think the coffee is great - maybe the reviews for bad coffee were off days for them. I like all the rotating specials and their jam is the BEST!
I'd give it a try - I actually like it way better than Louisa's right down the street which everyone seems to love and I can't figure out why. Go figure.
Really great! A somewhat hidden gem. Brunch was fantastic and the buttermilk oat pancakes were ootw! Vegetarian sausage was available and quite good. If you have not been, you have to go. One last thing service was fast, efficient, and courteous .... A rare treat in Seattle (finding all 3 at the same place at the same time).
I love breakfast places, and since this is down the street from my work I figured I'd take a walk down there during a long break and get myself some breakfast. The staff there is SO sweet and welcoming. Too bad the mushrooms I had in my scramble weren't the same... but the espresso was AMAZING. I think I need to drink a latte from a mug more often. It only cost me about $15 for a full breakfast and a 16-oz latte. Not a bad treat to myself. I wish they stayed open later.
I ordered something to pick up once without a menu in hand and they were patient enough to work with the annoying questions I was barking at my friend while she was on the phone ordering for us.
Was "greeted" in a way that made it very clear that they have their regulars, and that I am not one. Asked if I could order a sandwich to go, since I was on my way back to work and didn't have time to hang out. Was given a mechanically-dispensed list of options for my sandwich and side, then left alone with no further comment and no offer to take a seat until it was ready. Just left to hang out at the front door and look awkward. Watched my hostess-slash-server melt her ice to chat up one regular, then say "hi sweetie" to another. Decided to go outside and grab some coffee.
Coffee Cart Guy(tm) did his best to make small talk while he pulled my shots, and was friendly enough. Offered to let me pay for my coffee inside on my lunch bill. Also told me that once I was back inside I was welcome to sit at any open table while they finished my sandwich. Made a DAMN FINE vanilla latte, sure, but $3.50 for an 8oz? Really? $3.50??
Went back into the cafe and took a seat at the table with the magazines, enjoyed my coffee, and waited for my sandwich. Took longer than it should've, given what I ended up with, but this isn't a big sticking point. What does kill me, however, is that I got back to my desk and opened my container to find that my Avo-Turkey sandwich -- which was supposed to contain turkey, avocado, lettuce, mayo, and tomato -- was given to me sans tomato. The fuck. The bread they use is reeeeaaally good sandwich bread, so I'll pretend the one obligatory star Yelp forces me to dole out is for that. However, there is absolutely no reason I should have paid $8.50 for an amazingly basic sandwich and a side of tough pasta salad with a grossly tangy aftertaste, let alone for those things with no tomato.
All in all, I see absolutely no reason to go back, even if I happen to be starving and walking by. I don't care if they call you "sweetie" after they finally decide they like you. I'm not going to overpay them on a regular basis for the privilege.
Coffee bar: 3 stars.
Cafe: 1 star.
Overall: Double "Meh."
I was really excited to find a breakfast/brunch place so near to my new place! But then I actually ate here.
The menu sounds great, but the food is forgettable. Small portions for the price and lousy service. The final nail in the coffin is the little sign that tells you to get the f*** out when you're done because other unlucky diners are waiting to be seated. Isn't the best part of brunch lingering over a cup coffee? I guess I'll just have to do that somewhere else.
I love great breakfast joints. Sadly, this is not one of them. The food is luke-warm, just like the coffee, which is ironic since it's also burnt!. It's too bad, this place is right around the corner from my house. If you're looking for breakfast in Eastlake, stick with Louisa's!
Bland, over-priced and boring dishes, crappy and slow service, that is the 14 Carrot Cafe in a nut-shell. A friend and I went here a while back because it looked pretty good from the outside. The food wasn't horrible, that would be IHOP, but it certainly didn't live up to the price.
At first glance, the staff looks like they know what they're doing; that's just the vibe I got. I couldn't have been more wrong, I especially hate it when I feel like I'm inconveniencing a server by having to remind them about simple things. We didn't have silverware till about 10-minutes after our dishes were served. I'm not sure of my food was cold when it came out like some here have claimed; but it sure as shit was after I was finally able to take a bite of it.
I also got coffee there, while it tasted good, it was only filled twice. I'm not going to go into a Mr. Pink-style rant about this; but Jesus F'ing C, I see you wandering around with the coffee pot, why not come over and put some of that love in my cup!? Oh I know, it must be like at a carnival or fair, I have to hit ya' in the head with my cup and win the refill... is that it?
Over-priced, shitty service and mediocre food. The reason that it got two-stars is because (shockingly) there are a lot worse breakfast joints out there. I'm not sure what the attraction is to this place, it seems like they either get really good reviews or really bad ones.
The carrot cafe seems a little inconsistent to me. Sometimes it's great (especially since it's convenient for me) but sometimes it's been rather disappointing.
I've had corned beef hash multiple times here and about half of the time it's amazing, and half of the time it's a little nasty. Not sure if it depends on the cook or what. Last omelet I had was pretty good. I like the neighborhood feel and decor. The staff is pretty nice although sometimes not very attentive if busy.
If I didn't live in the neighborhood then I probably wouldn't go back because it's hit or miss.
Hi there!
there's numerous reviews already, so here's a shorty one:
I've only had good service here and have never had to wait. The food is fucking tasty
Thank you
-M-
So I fell for this place when I was falling for a guy. And yes, the banana pancakes are still SCRUMPTIOUS. That said when I was so proud to take friends there recently, I learned my rosy colored glasses, must have extended beyond the guy...some unhappy tummies at the table I'm sorry to stay. But for pancakes folks, I still say 14 Carrot Cafe all the way!
I have gone here a few times for breakfast and lunch (not too much difference as they seem to offer the same menu all day).
They have some southwestern/mexican dishes on the menu which is a bit different, i.e. chorizo burritos, chicken fried steak and eggs.
The quality of the food is pretty average and priced higher than I would expect, but I guess location probably costs. I am sure that some locals really like the place as everytime I have been there it has been pretty busy and some of the faces seem familiar.
Service has always been very good for me.
I don't know why someone knocked IHOP, I would much prefer breakfast at a IHOP/Denny's personally.
Slow service and sub-par eats. Normally I would think that breakfast is a bullet-proof staple that anyone can get right.
Here they seem to go out of their way not to do so.
Fake syrup, fake butter, and out-of-a-box meals.
My eggs tasted like they came out of a carton, the cheese wasn't melted, and considering everything is $10+ a plate, rather small.
Service was slow and forgetful, but the best is yet to come.
They actually have a sign posted that asks you to think of the people waiting and GTFO. So I should hurry up and rush my breakfast because there might be someone waiting? Are you fucking serious?
Go somewhere else for breakfast. This place isn't worthy.
Yum. Come here for a hearty breakfast. The omelettes are huge and full of fresh ingredients. Service is warm and the atmosphere is comfortable (the space isn't cramped or large either). The prices are reasonable too.
One of the few places I'll go to without showering (don't worry, I usually do). It's not fancy, but it's decent breakfast food.
If you are hungover, you'll love it more. The food is simple. But, we always leave full and happy, and it's fairly laid back which is great for a sunday morning.
It's a good come in, eat, get out place... but I find that OK. If you want a place to linger and gab a about how "you'll never drink that much again" from the previous night, I'd go somewhere else (perhaps AA?).
Service is to the point... they get you in and out. If you have people in from out of town, I'd probably take them somewhere nicer. There are better places out there, but you'll get a good simple meal.
We went to this place for some early morning breakfast in a small group of 4.
Wow... the food was great. I am not a coffee drinker, but the coffee was also divine from what my friends tell me. The thing that hurt me the most about this place was the one true reason I went there was for some carrot cake, which was conveniently left off our order somehow. The service was only so-so although the welcoming party was good. Any more than 4 people would have sullied the experience.
I've been going to this place for years. It's a weekend breakfast staple, but get there early. Portions are huge, sharing is a good idea. If its available, get the stuffed french toast special. YUM
There is something profoundly intimidating about raw spinach.
Spinach in curry, spinach with balsamic vinegar, wilted spinach with Korean sauce, all are splendid, but raw spinach just frightens me. As fast as I can, I get it into a pan with some oil and salt and garlic, and if I find when I think about it afterwards that in fact I'm not even hungry, well, I can always put it in the fridge with the refried beans, and make quesadillas with it later.
And then there is spinach salad.
Spinach salad, reason proclaims, must be made out of raw spinach.
And it is good.
And I think to myself that I should make it.
And even sometimes do I purchase some spinach, and some bacon and other requisite items, and even do I bear them home to my dwelling, whereupon--I stir-fry the spinach and make some rice and fry up bacon, and there I am again, saladless.
Rarely can I think of a very good reason to go out to eat, but spinach salad is one such reason. Into the mysterious recesses of a restaurant kitchen goes raw spinach, and out it comes, transfigured, and I get to eat it, and then I am happy.
Unless it's at 14 Carrots. There, you order a spinach salad and what you get is a big pile of raw spinach, in all its fearsomely glistening velvety green glory. Adorned with a little pile of raw mushrooms, to boot.
Great breakfast joint with great service and atmosphere. The prices are a little on the high side for the portions but the food is delicious and they have a wide variety of options. This place sort of reminds me of Brief Encounter in Bellevue. It is a place where it seems a lot of locals come on a weekly basis for breakfast. A very friendly staff and prompt service make this place a constant go-to joint.
This is where I go when I want to feel like I'm eating a healthy breakfast. Everything I've had here is fresh and high-quality, a far cry from the greasy spoon breakfast joints I usually frequent.
My favorite of the moment is the tahini toast, which is french toast stuffed with tahini. It is a bizarre combo, but addictive. When paired with fresh fruit and plain yogurt (no sugar added), it brings out the hippie in me.
Whenever I have friends or family in town, I take them here because of the warm and friendly vibe. It's got a little bit of a funky/crunchy vibe, but not enough of one to scare those Denny's die-hards away.

Stopped in here last Saturday before dropping Brent off at the airport. Gave ourselves at least an hour to get seated and eat. Make that an hour and 15 minutes. Got seated quickly and then waited 15 minutes to be acknowledged. I said to waiter, "We need to leave for the airport in one hour. Do you think we have time to eat or realistically should we leave?" His exact words were, "We'll make it happen."
Well, he didn't. We left hungry, with a package of hard scones given to us as a gesture of good will. Appreciate the fact they apologized, but didn't make up for the fact that they didn't deliver on a promise.
Honestly, after the 4 or 5 times I had gone there (I used to live very close), I never had a great experience. Definitely not worth the inevitable wait.
Between the food either being under or over cooked and the jerky owner, I won't be heading back any time soon.
I'm calling it my new Rusty Pelican.
What I love is I can breakfast or lunch and there are like a million bajillion choices!!
I'm a lot of talk sometimes "I want breakfast, I can't wait for pancakes, I want hashbrowns!" Then when we sit down with the menu, I'm like "oh a chicken gyro sounds awesome"
So I like the variety.
It's always lively and a really up beat atmosphere. The art they have now is all about these crazy cat ladies and it's awesome! I wish I could buy one, they are so funny!
(PS you can buy the art, it's just I'm too broke)
This is a great Eastlake neighborhood spot, perfect for the lazy breakfast without traveling to 5Spot or any other more popular breakfast places. It's full during weekend and holiday brunchtime, so plan accordingly - there's a reason it's full of people!
The coffee cart (which I assume is part of the same business since it is stored inside when not in use) rocks, and is a nice alternative to Voxx from time-to-time.
The food's always good, the value is decent, and the table service is a nice treat from my other favorite for a hot breakfast on the weekend, the bakery down the street.
There are so many things wrong with this place but so many things right with it that you have to go ahead and give it a middle-of-the-road review.
So it's Memorial Day weekend in Seattle and everyone is throwing a party... it's my duty to attend said parties and therein accept the consequences of them on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. when your already-recovered friends, who apparently didn't understand that Memorial Day weekend is the time to memorialize your veterans/serving forces by announcing your patriotism with red + blue jello shots, wake you up and tell you to get dressed (oh, but I'm still wearing last night's clothes anyway) and take a walk down to Carrot Cafe.
So as you may have gathered, I'm basically teetering on the edge of my life in hangoverland, but delightfully enough the walk was about 1 minute long. That's the cool thing about Seattle.
But unfortunately the wait is about 15 minutes long. Being a patron of many brunch spots in Los Angeles, 15 minutes really isn't a big deal. So we sit outside, in the beautiful temperate setting that is an abnormally warm Seattle weekend, and wait. We also had run into some of my friend's old colleagues so it was pleasant.
We get called in and seated at a table that's a little bit too large for 3 people. Who cares. They do have an enormous selection of breakfast items, but since I simply needed carbohydrates/bread-like material to soak up the leftover evil in my stomach, I went with sourdough pancakes.
I thought, "I love sourdough bread, and I love pancakes. This should be amazing."
So I'm sitting there staring off into space, looking much like death, when the hostess/lady who runs the place came over to me and put her arm around my shoulders.
"Honey, are you really hungry?"
"Oh... um, I'm...just really hung-over," I said.
At this admission, the mid-50's lady starts CRACKING up! "Oh, honey, I so know how you feel! Let me bring you some toast and some water."
So although the waiter had not brought us water nor food for a little longer than one would expect, we did have a bunch of toast to nosh on. That was nice.
When my sourdough pancakes did finally come (and after the waitress had completely gotten my friend's order wrong) I was pretty excited.
But they were terrible. GAH! They were EXTREMELY sour, more sour than that sourdough bread stuff you get at Ethiopian restaurants, and reeeeeeaaaally dry. So I just slathered it in this jam that was on the table (which I later accidentally stuck the spoon for into my syrup... so not my day). So I literally only ate about 3/4 of one pancake and stole some of my friend's hashbrowns.
So, overall, the wait and price did not match the quality of food and service. My 2 pancakes were $5.50. They came with one pat of butter and syrup... haha and some friendly mom-like service and sympathy.
I love breakfast. I'm not sure why there isn't more universal acclaim for the 14 Carrot. Maybe I get a different experience because I'm a late riser and roll in around 11am. But the people are nice, the food is great and the ambiance fun.
I usually order the Sweet Tooth breakfast featuring the cinnamon roll, with a waffle on the side (yes I'm a pig -- oink!). My wife gets the croissant sandwich, which has eggs, bacon and cheese in it, or sometimes she gets the granola which she likes.
Call me crazy, maybe it's because I'm from the Eastside and there aren't that many great places for breakfast out here. But I've been going to the 14 Carrot for years and will gladly continue to do so!
ps- I like fake maple syrup better than the real stuff. My wife doesn't. There you go, to each their own!
Yummy breakfast with my boyfriend on a recent trip to Seattle. We were driving around town and stumbled upon this place.
I really enjoyed it. They have a pretty large menu and lots of choices. All of the staff was really friendly and helpful. The prices were okay. I usually like a cheaper breakfast but this wasn't too expensive.
I had the breakfast quesadilla and it was super good and BIG. He got the sunshine scramble which I think was a special. He also had grapefruit juice and it was pretty awesome. It tasted like a perfect grapefruit, not too sweet and not to tart.
I'd say the only reason they didn't get the whole 5 stars was because it is a bit more than I would've liked to pay for what we got. And it was a good place but definitely not the best breakfast I've ever had. Pretty typical breakfast, prob really good for a hangover.
I have to agree more with the poor reviews than the good ones. I went there on Mothers Day and it was a subpar experience. The waitress we had was friendly enough but too hippy-dippy to get our orders together. I found the quality of the food not nearly what I had been let to believe, the portions were on the small side and we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for a table for two.
I know the place is popular (Why I don't know. Hype?) and I certainly had the obligatory "Sunday brunch" wait time budgeted in, but even by those standards, we waited a long time.
There are better breakfast places in town than to go there again.
Let me echo Stephanie T's review of the huevos rancheros. The perfectly crispy tortillas make this my favorite breakfast in all of Seattle. I haven't been able order huevos rancheros ANYWHERE else without being disappointed and wishing I'd just gone to the 14 Carrot.
The place is packed on weekends, so order yourself a cup of coffee at the coffee cart (or, walk 30 steps to Voxx for better Stumptown coffee) and if it's nice out, sit in the sunshine and think about how you're about to eat the most delicious combination of black beans, eggs, tomatoes, hashbrowns, crispy tortillas, sour cream, and cheese.
The only other thing I've ordered was the eggs benedict, which was fine, I guess. Nothing to write home about... they're better at the Dish, Chinook or Cutters.
I love any place that will let me eat breakfast any time of the day. I don't understand the post that say the serve is bad because they were incredibly kind to us. I had biscuits and gravy and my friends had the florentine eggs benedict and the eggs and chicken fried steak. We all liked our meals, the hollandaise sauce looked good and the avocados were beautiful. I'll return.
I took my parents here when they were over from Spokane as I wanted a non-crowded place to sit and eat a late breakfast/early lunch on a Saturday, which is exactly what we got. The food was pretty great as well, I tried a little bit of the breakfast food along with the Turkey-Cranberry sandwich that I ordered (which was fantastic). The Chorizo breakfast burrito looked amazing and I never had less than half a cup of hot coffee, which is important for a quality breakfast joint. A great place to relax on a weekend morning and not fight the crowds of other popular places in the Eastlake/U-District area.
I went there after the Dawg Dash this weekend with my husband and another couple. It was only 10:30am and we didn't have to wait at all. Actually, we had really good service. No problems there.
The food was good, not great, and pretty unimaginative. There are lots of other places to go for breakfast in Seattle so I probably would not go back there.
