Review from Everett D.
La Habra, CA
Hugh and his staff are excellent at what they do! I had brought my guitar in to get a setup and new bridge. when I got it back it felt great but one problem, my low string kept falling out of its notch on the bridge. Reason was because I really upped the gauges since I play in a pretty low tuning. But I brought it back and they opened up the notch so the string sat in perfectly....for FREE. Because these guys GUARANTEE their work and will not stop til that guarantee is met. I plan on doing all tech related stuff here. Not to mention their shopping selection is not bad either!

Hugh is a pro. I take all my guitars to him. His prices are good and his work is exceptional. I am glad to see his business growing. That is what quality work and service will get you.

I can't recommend this place more. Hugh and his great crew rule the guitar fixing school. Really super nice knowledgeable folks. I explained to them about the broken truss rod and interest in using the Stewart Mac Truss rod rescue kit . Long story short I helped to buy the tool and they did all the work for me + the bridge saddles and a set up. Bonus is the restaurant next door: Raymond's California Bistro which totally rules. A tad $$ but very yummy.

I love this place. I gig and teach professionally and I do all my own basic set ups but I have a fear of touching frets. My strat was fretting way more than a guitar with medium jumbos and a 9.5 radius should so I took it in after a recommendation from a friend and I was very pleased with the results. I can bend like crazy with no problems at all. Finding someone that can do frets that well is a real challenge. Cool guys too. Don't hesitate to bring in your guitar. A week long wait is with the peace of mind.

My guitar was crackling when I plugged into an amp, so I took it here for repair. I had a couple of other guitarists look at it, and they both thought it was a failed pot. I was expecting to drop the guitar off and get the pot replaced. I was impressed that Hugh asked questions to diagnose the problem, like a doctor would an illness. He told me the response I was getting out of the guitar didn't seem to indicate a pot failure. He opened it up and found a small metal washer hidden under the wires in the cavity. Took it out, and the crackling was gone! Didn't charge me for any time. Really excellent customer service. I would not hesitate to go back for another repair issue or to get a new guitar set-up.

I had my Kamaka Concert Ukulele frets adjusted by Hugh today and he was kind enough to knock it out in the same day. He is always willing to help me out with any issues I am having. My Ukulele is now setup perfectly. He also helped me install a MISI pickup. I will return for any addition work I need on my Ukes. I don't have any worry's when Hugh work on my high end ukes.

I can't say enough good things about Hugh and 13th Street Guitars. Over the years, I have paid for set up on several guitars/basses and did see improvement. However, the setup I received on my Ibanez RG is phenomenal. I can't even believe this is the same guitar and the playability is better than any guitar I've ever put my hands on. I went all out with both the setup and fret dress for $130, and now my guitar feels so perfect that I wouldn't change a single thing about it.
Whether you just bought a guitar, you have an older guitar that maybe needs work, or if you are thinking upgrading the guitar you are playing now, then do yourself a favor and have Hugh's shop work their magic. It is the most worthwhile money that any guitar player will spend. -

The sad truth is that most of us musicians are moody, broke, unrealistic, and just difficult to deal with on a business transaction level. Having been jaded and worn by weathering years of our abuse, most luthiers have hung up their personalities and good attitudes for good, becoming insufferable bastards, themselves. It's a vicious cycle.. Enter Hugh Thomas from 13th Street Guitars.
I hate having to leave my guitar with strangers for weeks, only to have it returned with half-assed work and a poor attitude. Hugh is cut from a different cloth- or maybe I just caught him before the reality sank in that the only things wrong with music are musicians! I keed, I keed!
Hugh is very knowledgeable, his shop is neat and orderly, he doesn't employ used car or Jiffy Lube up-sell tactics, and he's just a genuinely good dude. The bonus is that he prices his work competitively.
I let him have my custom warmoth for a setup and fret level and expected to have it back within a few weeks time. I dropped it off Wednesday and got a phone call Friday evening that she was ready for action. Since I received it, I have not been able to put it down. I feel like I'm in high school again and this guitar has bumped my SG-GT to the backup stand. She's going on tour with me for sure.
The only trouble with Hugh is that he's too big to put into your gig bag or guitar case. Bring cash when you pick up your guitar and have a hamburger at the donut shop next door. Tell 'em Frank sent ya.

Buena Park, CA
After reading rave reviews about this place I decided to get my guitar set up done here. Since its a cheap fake of a major brand, I was sure there wasn't much that could be done to make it nice and playable. I just wanted to rid the incessant annoying buzz on several strings, and maybe straighten out the neck a bit.
I took it in around noon and had a nice conversation with the proprietor, who seems to be a nice guy. He took one look at my guitar and informed me that I needed to dress my frets also, totaling at $130. The place is small, but very clean. Which says a lot about how they work and reflects the quality of their work.
After 3 hours I came back and was absolutely astounded by the work they had done. The damn thing plays like butter now!! Wow, I couldn't believe my hands. Buzz is gone, intonation is spot on, action was nice and low, and the guitar itself just felt "right". Magic, thats how they do it.
Bottom line, these guys do excellent work, at a great price. They even guarantee their work, so if I'm not happy with the adjustments I can take it back at no cost. This establishment will be getting all my guitar related business from now on. -

Great place to get your guitar set up. Every guitar I've taken there plays much better than before. Depending on the condition of your guitar, it can come out feeling like a brand new guitar when they are done with it.

I'm a pro musician and need my guitars to play....(weird I know), so they said they would need one week to level the frets and fix some wiring. OK. After a week I call. No it's still in the running...I ask well how much longer? He says a couple more days. I say ok. After three days and no call I decided to drive there. Guess what: He said work has started on it but it is not finished then he saw that oh work has not yet started on this guitar and the notes on what to do on it were nowhere to be found. He hasn't even started working on it after keeping it 10 days, yeah, so I had to take it and leave cause I needed this guitar.
BUT
Even though this ordeal subsequently cost me a lot of money (because unfortunately I then took it to the guitar doctor who actually butchered my guitar...and then I had to pay someone else to finally fix it.......arghhh) -
I really appreciate 13th Street guitars reaching out to me after the ordeal though and offering to make things right. That is pretty rare and cool these days.
As I hear from friends, 13th street guitars is the only decent guitar repair service in the area so give it a try! -

Believe the hype. Hugh is honest guy who really knows his stuff. Reasonably priced & fast turn around time as well. He's a totally unpretentious and simply interested in making any guitar play better. If you are in Orange County (or even South LA) and need guitar work done, do yourself a favor and try this place out. You won't be disappointed!

I brought my G&L bass here for a set up and a set of strings. The other reviews are right - this place does excellent work for reasonable prices. No pressure or attitude. Great customer service. I highly recommend Hugh for any of your guitar or bass repair needs.

We're lucky to have a shop like this, easily the best of its kind in OC. This isn't some guy on Craigslist, it's the full size shop of a full time professional. Meticulous guitar work, easy-to-find location, open till 7, they take credit cards, and the prices are always extremely fair. Really fair. They could probably get away with charging more than they charge. So far, I've used them for setups, fretwork and wiring, and some of those were my own semi botched DIY jobs. Between my own experiences and what I have seen on the wall and in the shop, I would trust 13th St with any job, on any instrument, period. I have never been disappointed with the work. Relatively quick turnaround times and great communication. That's one thing I like; THEY call YOU when it's done, as soon as it's done. Hugh and Ben, hope you stick around - you guys are an asset to the local community of musicians .
