I generally keep my coffee drinking basic and black, but the less you doctor it the more you can tell the difference between quality and dreck. What you get at 1369 is quality.

This location, roughly 30 steps from my front door, is always buzzing with activity. The small shop is packed with tables, mostly for 2 people. There always seems to be a seat available when you need one, however.

The staff at 1369 are all very friendly, and will answer any questions that you have ... and even though this is a coffee shop you might have some, given their range of drinks, beans and baked goods. Their beans are not outrageously priced, nor is the rest of their menu. I have noticed that drinks requiring "assembly" (lattes, etc.) tend to take a while. If you are in a hurry, better stick to coffee or tea. Also, bring cash.

1369 also has an ever-changing selection of baked goods. I love their scones (orange-cranberry mmmmmm) and their giant cookies are also good. I haven't allowed myself any pie or cake yet, but they look mouthwateringly good. They also do breakfast sandwiches on the weekends only.

This is the first time I have reviewed a coffee shop so I hesitantly give it 5 stars. This place is very cool, and deserves such a rating. Would I say that you need to drive clear across town to drink coffee here? Probably not. Walk 15 minutes to hang out here? Absolutely. But part of this 5 star review goes beyond simply recommending 1369. The simple fact is, we need more places like 1369 in this city. There are definitely more cool little coffee shops than there were when I moved here 5 years ago, but there could and should be so many more. So I guess what I'm saying is that 1369 is a shining example of why you should support your local coffee shop.

Great coffee served with a gigantic middle finger.

In theory the perfect local Cantabrigian coffee shop where everyone knows your name and they're always glad you brought your iPad.  In practice its a secret psychological experiment to see how long people cling to the idea that 1369 is the Platonic ideal of a coffee shop while constantly suffering from increasing levels of abuse.  Odd/chaotic counter setup, high prices but cash only, pipping hot coffee served with a weird sleeve that serves no purpose but to taunt you as your hand burns, flimsy lids, and zealous control over your both milk intake and your bathroom needs.

When will you finally admit that this place is kinda awful and that you would be happier at Toscaninis or even McCafe?

I really want to love this place, I do.

BUT - it simply doesn't live up to expectations. Perhaps mine were too high. I enjoy the non-starbucks vibe and the nice baristas. However, the price I pay just doesn't match the value of the taste. The coffee cake was super medicore and the fruit flies in the back were just plain disgusting. Overall, I say go to the OTHER 1369 if you can and don't, I repeat, don't sit in the back of the shop!

2 stars is probably not fair given that I have probably visited once a year for the past decade or so without any major problems, but whatever, here goes.  My experience was enough that I'll probably not visit this location again (Mass Ave location slightly better).

I'm a $tarbuck$ guy during the week, simply because that's all there is near my work-day commute.  On weekends I try to do the socially-conscious, Cambridge, liberal, yuppie, hipster thing and visit a mom-and-pop coffee place so that I feel better about myself for supporting the big, bad, franchise places, blah blah blah (que Rage Against the Machine song).   So what better idea than to visit 1369, right?

No.  And I'll make it short.

Customers are just obnoxious. Screw you to all the squatters sitting at tables for hours while the place fills up.  Take your dissertation or Facebook stalking somewhere else.  And when did the words "excuse me" leave the lexicon of urban Bostonians and Cantabrigians?  You want to get by me, or you bumped into me? Say something, don't just nod, stare at the floor, or walk away.

Scones?  Ehhh, stale, dried out and flavorless.  Threw it out.

Service?  Disorganized and confusing.  Ordered two coffees, only got one, no real verbal clarity from service staff about whose coffee was whose (multiple people waiting for orders, people taking wrong drinks, etc).

Coffee?  Gross, burnt, and expensive.  1369 may also be the ONLY coffee place I've been to (aside from DD, interestingly) where the staff puts cream in your coffee for you instead of having cream/milk containers out for public use.  Needless to say, counter-guy barely put any in it and then simply moved on.  They also ration out those cardboard sleeves too.

In the end, scone thrown out, coffees poured out, $8 wasted, and of course....back we went to big, bad $tarbuck$.

I'll admit, I'm a sucker for indepedent coffeeshops but this is just too bland for me. I've been here (and the Central Sq. location) a few times I can safely say I am just not impressed, whatsoever.

My review, while for the Inman location, also applies to the sister location word-for-word.

It's a pretty small place and it's typically crowded, so good luck finding a seat (thank God there's no free WiFi). Atmosphere is pretty ordinary.

I cannot review any of the sandwiches or salads because they simply did not look or sound all that appetizing. They seemed pretty run of the mill, things I could probably make in my own kitchen with minimal creative effort and monetary output.

The drip coffee is just kind of boring, and they serve it piping hot. It''s more or less undrinkable the first 15 minutes you have it. The coffee itself tastes pretty boring and unremarkable, a step above Starbucks but that's about it. They don't serve pour-overs.

The best thing about this place are the espresso drinks, They're good-- not great and certainly not worth traveling out of my way for, but I don't mind dropping a few bucks on a nice latte here.

The pastries I've had here are edible, but by no means remarkable.

Most coffeeshops are standard fare in most departments but have a few elements that make them worth going to every once in a while. Nope, 1369 is pretty much par in every aspect, which makes it less than par holistically speaking.

Sunday morning. Bags under eyes. Somehow I am in Inman Square. Sandwich consumed. Need a beverage that isn't coffee but has chocolate. 1369. 7 Macbooks. 6 iPhones of varying generations. 3 iPads. My Android was disappoint. Get hot chocolate. Extra whip? Fuck yes, don't ask me again. Fancy lids. Mustached barista does the nod to a fellow mustachio. +1 coffee shop XP.

From the looks of the place, my expectations were exorbitantly high... I had a yerba matte latte with soy... the soy was way too hot and it was not even close to par with other lattes I have had at similar indie but cute coffee shops in the past. The ambiance is cool, but was pretty crowded (it was a Sunday brunch-y time). The staff was nice, but I don't think I would be running back the next time I'm in the area.

Highly anticipated, Highly disappointed. We had a drip coffee and Mocha and they were pretty average and tasteless. Their pastries were either solid cooked or from the day before. They only accept cash and you have to pay for WiFi :(
Don't bother trying this place, keep walking on by.

Still in love with the place, but a bit let down as of late. I used to prize this place for its cold-brewed iced coffee. I can only drink iced-coffee, and cold-brewed is so much better. I always order the same thing (oh, how I long to be a regular) and it used to be perfect. Iced coffee with soy, and I don't add anything in. The sweetened soy milk had just enough sugar that the coffee was fine, especially since the cold-brewing makes a less acidic flavor that doesn't need as much sweetener to cut the sharp taste.

The past few times I've ordered my usual drink though, its tasted a bit different. I wouldn't say its no longer cold-brewed, but it doesn't taste like it anymore. I get just a tiny bit of an upset stomach drinking the recent blends, similar to when you drink a large coffee on an empty stomach - not a stomach ache but a slight bit upset. Maybe they switched the base for this coffee, maybe it just sits out longer these days since winter doesn't bring much high demand for iced coffee, I don't know. I'll keep coming, but will start branching into more palatable beverages if the coffee doesn't go back to being the star attraction it once was.

    I still love you, 1369!

This is a nice coffee shop with just the right amount of pretentiousness.  When I visited Boston, I was staying at a B&B not too far from 1369, so I came here every morning.  It was my first time trying a London Fog  (earl grey, steamed milk and a bit of vanilla) and I got hooked!  While the London Fog was definitely the standout, the scones were  respectable, but I thought the chai was a disappointment.

Overall, this is a cool and relaxing spot with great drinks.

I'm now a visitor to Cambridge (previous resident), but I'm still a fan of 1369. Mostly for the vibe -- local, indie, neighborhood coffeeshop. The drinks and food are okay, but maybe not something to call home about. Unfortunately, it appears that they've started charging for wi-fi. It makes sense (put a small barrier to decrease the number of people from camping out with laptops), but it still sort of sucks.

Oh, and the prices on the chalkboard still reflect the price including sales tax. Love it!

I moved to Inman Square less than a week ago, and right away, I headed to 1369.  I like the small space and the chill vibe here.  (Of course, "hipsters" work behind the counter.)  I don't think the coffee or food is anything special.  I like that it's close to my apartment, and I've stopped here many times.  (According to my frequent flyer card, I've been here 7x in less than 7 days!  Which is either funny or just outright sad.)

What truly saddens me is the wi-fi.  IT IS NOT FREE!

We can debate about whether or not this is fair.  I have no interest in that, and I can see why 1369, as a business, would prefer a paid internet service rather than a free one.

I like this place, but I will definitely have to limit my stopovers here.  Nevermind my graduate student loan budget.  The wi-fi is NOT FREE!

The service here gets 5 stars. Very patient, very interested in how the customer's day was going. Big emphasis on quality service here.

Menu looked fantastic, too. I'd definitely would like to try all their "fog" teas. I had the London fog (earl grey tea with vanilla syrup and steamed milk) and it was a great take on a classic. I also tried the pb hot cocoa, but it didn't knock my socks off. I would definitely want to come here to try a quiche or a chicken curry salad along with a baked good in the future. Good crowd for 2:00 in the afternoon, which shows that people are loyal but it's not crazy busy at the same time, or at least not at 2:00.

My husband absolutely loved this coffee spot, coming every day that we were there in Boston which was 3 days.  He discovered this new drink called the London Fog which is Earl Grey with warm milk and a shot of vanilla.  I admit, it was very tasty which I can see the attraction.  Their scones and their pastries are also pretty solid.  The Chai, skip.  The small downside is that they don't take card.  Otherwise, a cute spot for a caffeine pick-me-up.

My sister and my niece love this place!! Whenever I visit them, we always stop at 1369, and it's always one of the highlights of my trip. I really like it when the employees point out how much my 11 year old niece has grown!

The 'strawberry vanilla' scones are my favorite. But everything is tasty.

As the other reviewers have pointed out, be sure to bring cash since they don't accept credit cards.

757 vs. 1369: what a world of difference! 1369 has two cafes, one at 757 Mass Ave. and the other on 1369 Cambridge St. The former is grotty and mostly populated by hippie bread-dreds from Central Square. The latter is refined and populated by the Inman Square yuppies that live close by. There are two differences. The cafe on 1369 Cambridge St. is much cleaner, much cozier, and the coffee is much tastier. If you have the choice, travel the extra distance on your bike or on your feet and go here. Also, there's more to snack on if the mood hits you.

Charging for wi-fi just as the big chains have figured out not to do so is not cool, and having a glitchy interface for it does not instill confidence. It is OK to plead with people not to "camp out" on wi-fi, but NOT if they are paying for both the wi-fi and the food/beverage.

Saying that cappuccino with milk in it (instead of just foam) is traditional does not make it so. It makes a coffee-ish milk drink, but there is nothing traditional about it.

I do like the atmosphere (though I think the books that have been written in this cafe were written when there was a different play list on the sound system), and the baristas are friendly and attentive, if not quite expert.

I reserve higher ratings for shops that support the farmers that make the coffee business possible. I don't see evidence of this in the brochure or on the web site.

The location is nice. I love the benches in front of the store n the artsy folks sitting on those. It makes the storefront more lively n funky.

I found the muffins at $2.10  expensive, take-away price that is. Taste? Well that is obviously subjective but my carrot raisin muffin tasted like it was made of up to 90% sugar.

I definitely have had my frustrations at 1369 -- The teapots are so small! There's never a table! I'm out of cash AGAIN! -- but I gotta say, I think that it is accomplishing exactly what it is trying to accomplish. The vibe is great -- free WiFi would ruin it. The drinks are creative, if small. The Inman location is a cozy little space with beautiful light streaming through the windows.

Haters: of course it's crowded -- it's the most well-known independent coffeehouse in Inman square. Take what you can get. I personally love the atmosphere of the place -- Cambridge at its finest. The baristas ask you whether you would rather freeze to death or be burned alive. Drunk guys come in off the street and dance to Mumford and Sons or Ella Fitzgerald or whatever else is on the stereo. Everybody is hard at work on their novel or reading huge textbooks. It's a very Cambridge, very Inman, totally hipster environment. Give it some love.

Yes, it's not cheap. And yes cash only is never convenient or fun. But one of the best things about my apartment is being a block from 1369. If you live in the neighborhood you definitely earn their local respect, and staff will ask you how you're doing each time you're in. I do not drink coffee, so I judge most places by their chai and pastries...and 1369 excels in both areas. If you come in early the croissants will still be warm.

Also, they completely accept you working/studying/reading at one of the tables, even if you've just purchased a cheap pot of tea. The music is pure hipster coffee shop, but there are many magical mornings when they play soul or jazz and the music just infuses whatever you're eating with extra goodness.

I was looking for somewhere cozy enough so that I could relax, but not so muted and dark that I felt like I was in some cavernous hole in the wall that just happened to serve lattes. My friend told me to check this place out, so I brought a stack of papers to correct and found it to be a pretty ideal place. The lighting isn't bright and sterile, but juuuust right. Plenty of places to sit and do your thing, plus a fairly mixed clientele (or maybe just your typical Cambridge clientele?). Staff was friendly and professional- no rolling of eyes when i asked for a baggie for my cookie while they were cleaning up to close shop. I ordered a single cappuccino which was pretty good- the foam couldn't have been more perfect. The cookie was a BIG cookie, but well worth it.

The only drawback: you have to pay for WiFi, thus the 4 starts instead of 5. but hey, there are worse things.

I love this place. I haven't really had any of the baked goods, but I have a routine where I come in for my evening de-caf london fog (or some other tea-latte) when I take my dog for his last walk of the day.

The sizes and prices are great and the service is quick. The place has never not been packed, and getting a table when you want to sit down is tough. The pizza bagels on weekend mornings are so good, I've literally gotten them even though i'd be going to brunch 30 minutes later.

I had been going to Bloc 11 in Union when I was in a transient phase and staying with a friend in that area, and I never had an issue ordering a Rooibos latte with honey. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I have ordered one here, I seem to get the same girl who corrects me and says if its a tea, it can't be a latte and is an "au lait" and that i can put the honey in myself. I dont like to do this because it makes what little foam there is drop, so I never quite get it the way Bloc 11 would make it. I ask for latte so its slightly foamy. I get that you cant have a tea-capuccino but I ask for latte so there is still some foam and not just tea with hot milk. Either way, this chick's typical Cantabridgian attitude doesnt deter me from coming in, though if I could get my tea lattes made the way I like without getting an attitude and having to doctor them at home, I'd definitely give them 5 stars.

One of the perks of living in the Inman Square/ East Cambridge area is having small, independently owned establishments like this one all around you.  Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds are well hidden near the brutal grocery bully, Shaw's. There's no Starbucks. Stores like The Gap and J. Crew are all situated indoors down at the Cambridgeside Galleria.

The 1369 Coffee House is right in Inman Square. You will easily spot it because there's almost always a long line outside. And if there's not a line, due to poor weather, an abnormally early hour or a disaster of some kind, you will find it just behind the Inman Square bus stop (Bus 69) where lots of people wait for the bus. (Some of them are waiting for companionship, a hand out and a deep desire for early morning whiskey.)

Once inside, you'll find a small space that is overflowing with people who set up shop and do not leave. So don't plan on finding a seat. And if you do, you will be insanely close to your neighbors so watch out who you are talking about. No gossiping about your boss, please. Save it for the walk home.

The coffee is strong and hot, the pastries rich and solid, but I find the service cold and the prices high. Sometimes I have to wait far too long just to get a simple cup of tea or hot cider. No vegan options. There's usually a newspaper or two lying around so you can catch up on the news if you are able to grab a seat.

    It's Inman. It's crowded. It's coffee.

I consider myself a lucky girl to both 1) live in Inman square and 2) have 1369 as my neighborhood coffee house. The iced coffee (cold brewed) is wonderful in the summer and they never disappoint in their hot creations either. I can't speak for the ambiance of this place, as I'm always on the go, but it has all the charm of a friendly, understated coffee house. No thrills, just homey and warm and offering lots of house-made baked goods. So basically, 1369 is like the grandma's house of Inman square and that's always a good thing! Plus, it's a local business - so it's a win-win.

The thing that drives me crazy about this place though is how long you have to wait for espresso drinks. If its a weekday in the morning, plan to wait at least 15 minutes. Even on weekend mornings its that long. Makes me wonder if they only have a single shot machine. When I think of having to wait awkwardly in the very small space they have, I actually forgo it and get my coffee at the Biscuit or Central square. If you have the time to hang, then by all means, 1369 is your place!

Order: Americano or espresso or hot chocolate, drink, repeat.

I've been to both locations (the one in Central as well) and I have to say I thought the service and overall end product was much better at this location. Too bad I don't live in this neighborhood anymore as I've recently been on a kick for trying out new types of tea.

The service was pleasant, they had a question of the day. "Which animal would you rather be. A giraffe or a platypus?". Me and the cashier were able to strike up a friendly convo about why I chose platypus hands down.

I ordered a London Fog - I casually mentioned my hatred for Earl Gray Tea and she quickly suggested an Oolong in its place which was actually much milder and suited for my taste.

I left happy and unaggravated. Which I definitely cannot say about all places. What more can you ask for?

This was my first coffee shop experience when I moved to Boston and I am still a fan.  Really helpful staff.
The lattes are well-balanced and have just the right amount of strength.  The flavored lattes are good, but sometimes a little too sweet.  My favorite is the "Almond Joy."
The loose leaf tea collection is also extensive and comes in the cute little tea pot.  Unlike Athan's in Brookline, they will not charge you if you need a little more water added to the pot.
The bread pudding is really nice and hasn't changed much in years.  It tastes like it muffins were added to the mixture!

It always feels so dirty in here. To make matters worse its full of people that look like they don't shower.  The atmosphere is in need of immediate attention/help!  Hipster-hippy-ville.  Personally not for me, if I want to be inundated into that culture Diesel cafe in Davis is atleast more interesting to peoplewatch and in terms of food selection.

A perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee on a rainy day.  They also have a couple of lunch options which are pretty tasty but don't forget they are cash only.

Ooh ooh, so here's a riddle!

What do you get when combining the milk of a cow, the unfertilized baby of a hen and three day old orange spice, blueberry and poppyseed muffins?

Why, 1369's bread pudding, of course!

This exemplifies my experience with the joint. A slapdash mishmash of quaint and quirky, this diminutive, slightly worn space packs in studying folks, murmuring couples and relaxed friends vying for a coveted spot at one of their walnut tables.

Aside from the morning rush no one seems to be in a hurry; the collection of board games, relaxed staff, and soothing/refreshing beverages give the place an easy air. And although I've never made it a destination the rows of teas, and pint sized Vietnamese coffee are always pleasers.

A year ago today I wrote my very 1st review - of 1369 in Central. So to book-end my year of Yelp, I'll review it's sister-operation at the other end of Inman Street.

Is it any better? Have the 1369 corporation improved in 365 days? Not really, it's the same-same set of tables arranged like on a train, littered with people of the laptop-variety eeking out their last drops of old coffees to justify taking up space for everyone else.

1369 briefly went on a tea-trip and tried to improve that woeful side of their 'experience' but it was doomed to failure when staff paid no attention to how to steep a Pu-Erh or how to serve milk with your Earl Grey.

    Happy New Yelp!

I came to 1369 for coffee and a small bite to eat and as I went to put my coat on chair (it was the only one left), the ENTIRE place glared.  Great start.

Ordering was just as awkward.  I got a few stares from the three people behind the counter although I ordered just a honeybee cappucino and bagel.  Could the baristas get any colder?  Just one word answers and a total dollar amount.  The same happened at the location in Central.  I know I do not order things rudely since I tend to make friends at every other coffee house I go to...

My friend and I stayed anyway, feeling the hatred of everyone else there for taking a table even though we were paying patrons.  The honeybee cappucino was extremely flavorful, perfect in terms of temperature, and even had foam art.  My friend gulped his hot chocolate, apparently because he enjoyed it so much.

Perhaps if it wasn't so crammed, making it  difficult to navigate or  have conversation in, and if the staff and clientele weren't so full of themselves I would considering going back sooner.  Until then, I'll probably only make it in if in the neighborhood.

    Also...CASH ONLY!

Large double skim caramel Latte + cute counter person( Scone + Outside bench) / Guilty Pleasure = Happy Cara

Sure the inside is  crowded with too cool for school scholars or really hip 'fuck you' ers. The  Bust Stop outside has a bunch of drug addicts and "special" people waiting for the 69 bus.

You are correct. Every Tom, Dick and Harry who is walking down Cambridge st comes in here for a coffee.

Wait.... Wait.  You too? I thought I was the only one in the world that swears I have seen the oddest couple in America here at the 1369. Not to be a bitch but the questionable coupling of some 1369 patrons hurts my eyes.

Regardless of the sharp jabs at your eyes with the ugly knife, when the 1369 is not crowded it is a great place to meet up with a friend or read a book over some yummy coffee and tea. On a nice day, I sit out on the outside bench and make fun of everyone who walks by.

The other cool thing about 1369 is the cool/cute factor of their employees completely  cancels out any heebie jeebie's you may get from the Cambridge Hospital  patients roaming the outside door like zombies. Plus, you know this is one place in the world you will come and are guaranteed to be the hottest one there.

The 1369 is the quintessential neighborhood coffee shop. The cappuccinos and lattes are very tasty - this is the first place I was ever able to drink anything remotely coffee-flavored. (I had a strong coffee prejudice before I discovered this place - couldn't drink the stuff at all.) The cookies and little tidbits are tasty. The atmosphere is everything you picture in a coffee shop. The staff is friendly and helpful and always willing to strike up a conversation. Going to the 1369 makes me smile. It's an Inman Square staple and embodies the flavor of Cambridge.

The only con is that it's a popular place and you're not always able to get a table. But if that's the case, get your coffee to go - it's still worth a visit.
