I've only been here at 2:30am after the group has left the clubs.  It's filled with drunk, loud people trying to eat off their eventual hangovers.  Lots of water does it!  Anyway, I love the decor; the private booths; with all those drunks, I bet some interesting stuff happens in them.  The food is pretty decent; I never feel like I've eaten a crapload of grease (I usually get omelettes).  This last time I did the crab eggs bennedict; pretty good, I like their hash browns, but there wasn't enough crabmeat IMHO.  Also, I'm always on the prowl for good hollandaise sauce, and theirs was average, at best.  All in all, good company, slightly buzzed, and decent food make for a good night out.

Oh yeah, the wait was like 30min, which I didn't like, but it was the drunk-rush!

BADASS STEAK JOINT
~Open 24 Hours A Day~
This place reminds me of home. As a former Chicago girl, I grew up around these fabulous dark, 1950s/60s dinosaur steak joints that my grandpa favored. I always thought he was such a badass, taking me and my family out for a swanky steak dinner. In the dim light, I'd admire the way he knocked back 8 Captain and Cokes with his steak dinner as he barked orders at the waiter like a Camel-no-filter-fire-breathing dragon.

Ah yes,  I love the dark "MAD MEN" 60s gothic decor and I LOVE that this place is open 24 hours. Unfortunately, they have done a bit of remodeling in here, but the overall charm is preserved. And thank god the tall-backed brown leather booths are still the same. Except for the tragic loss of the coin-embedded old tables (replaced by a more generic cherry table wtf were they thinking???) this place remains the King of late night dinner in Seattle!

The private booths are so welcome when you want a discreet, drunken dinner. And the crowd is always a fun mix of just about every sort of person from club kids to old timer drunks. The staff is consistently wonderful. They never keep you waiting and are always polite whether you are there at 8pm or 3 am. In fact, the staff is SO wonderful, it's a little "Twilight Zone."  Definitely part of the charm.

The menu can be a bit hit or miss.
Hits: You can't go wrong with the Philly sandwich or any of the pasta dishes. If you are not on a budget, have steak of course!!! Keep in mind, the food is as "retro" as the decor. Heavy, salty, delicious comfort food that is nearly extinct in ultra-healthy and ultra-hip Seattle. For breakfast I get the Eggs Benedict. The Canadian Bacon is always delish and they NEVER screw up the eggs. Just be sure to get the hollandaise on the side as sometimes they can pour too much on.
Miss: Avoid things like the bay shrimp cocktail. A little too 60s even for me. The salads aren't spectacular either. Needless to say, don't bring your vegetarian friends here, they'll just bitch and whine and ruin your meal.

Although there are a lot of joints like this in Chicago, this is the only place like this in Seattle. Sadly, these types of places are a dying breed.

I had been wanting to go here for years but its location is sort of out of the way and I never remember it when we're trying to think of a place for dinner.  The other night we happened to be driving home to Queen Anne from Capitol Hill around 10pm looking for a restaurant that would still be open, and we decided to finally try 13 Coins.

The outside looked a little sketchy to me, but once we got inside I was totally blown away!  The decor is a 60's/70's posh lounge number, with brown leather tall back booths and tall swivel chairs at the bar.  It was moody and dark, with flattering lighting and a nice marble bathroom. The waiters were all wearing bow ties, and you get an old fashioned relish tray with your bread when you sit down.  It was part Mad Men, part Twin Peaks, and part The Shining.

It's fairly expensive but you get a lot of food and I felt like the quality was good and it was definitely worth it, especially for the atmosphere.   It made me want to put on an evening gown and drink a bunch of highballs, make an important business decision, seduce a spy, then make another important business decision.  I wish I could have seen it in its heyday , it absolutely oozes with suggestions that all kinds of scandalous happenings went on here :)

Like most people, I am not known to be here before 2 am  and I have never been in their bar until now. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that not only did they have a happy hour but a nightly drink special. I was lucky enough to be there on a Monday when the drink special is $5 martinis and I don't mean well liquor. Stoli, Kettle 1, Tanqueray, Bombay, yeah, I couldn't believe it either. These were doubles of course and just $5. Now moving beyond the cheap booze the bar has a cozy atmosphere with a gas fireplace and club chairs. There are 3 tvs for the sports fan but not overwhelming. I had a good time and the food isn't bad if you know what to order. I have never been disappointed with the Joe's special.

Open 24hrs 365 days a year. That got my attention.  Was very excited to find a classy  joint with the hours I keep.  Seems like most of Seattle shuts down at 10pm for food service.  We went in for a non-thanksgiving thanksgiving dinner with he plan to splurge.  My BF and I both decided to go with the NY steak & scampi... The steak was fantastic, the shrimp a big disappointment.  I asked the server if the shrimp was served butterflied- the best way to get scampi, was told yes and it came out over cooked, bland, and un-butterflied.  On the plate with it was some over cooked spaghetti topped with butter and some more bland spice, and not vegetables in sight.   I will go back for steak, and likely to try some breakfast or lunch food, but I'll avoid the high price combos & seafood.

I haven't been to 13 Coins since New Year's Eve 2002. Early Sunday morning, 4AM, and the guys and I needed food. I get a text message from our friends that we left Urbane with *see my review on Urbane* and they were at 13 Coins, so we joined them.

The menu is expensive! I recall my parents always going to 13 Coins in the 70's and early 80's when it was in its hay-day of swankness in Seattle, but I'm not sure about the hoodrich crowd that was there..then again, it's 4AM.

My guests ordered: French Dip, Ham & Cheese Omelette's, and I ordered the club with fries, and a salad. It came out with bow tie pasta, I told the server I ordered fries, and they promptly served me a complimentary double portion of fries. The salad was huge! And really good.

I haven't been here in 7 years, but I'll be back soon...I love the atmosphere and dark ambiance of the place. The service was excellent.

It's worth a trip to 13 Coins for the atmosphere and the service.  Both are some of the best that I've come across in my time in Seattle.  The food is pretty good, and the only thing that holds this place back from getting a full five stars.

The atmosphere is very lounge like, and the last time I went in there was a jazz duo playing.  It was a lousy cold night, but a seat next to the fireplace, a good drink and great music made it a really good experience.

If you told me that 13 Coins has been serving the exact same menu since 1967, I'd believe you.  It feels like the cooks and wait-staff have been going through the same motions for decades, just counting the minutes till quitting time.

The food is uninspired, boring and flat. It's greasy and bland; tired and unsatisfying.  The environment is soul-stripping - feeling more like a dark and musty wood-paneled moose lodge than a restaurant. It feels as sad as an estate sale when someone has passed away.

The French Onion Soup is way too salty, the omelettes should be half the price, the hash browns are a tasteless, greasy mess and I swear the "orange juice" is Sunny Delight.

When my wife's order was screwed up (she specifically told the waiter that she was vegan and asked for no eggs on her benedict, which he didn't write down of course), our server just told her to take it off the plate and use a spoon to put the Hollandaise back on the english muffin!

Hey, if it was a cheap dive-y tongue-in-cheek kinda diner, it would be  great...you could take punky photos in the retro 70's decor.

BUT IT'S NOT!!!  It's a "serious" restaurant and you'll realize this when you get the check. Hold on to your 7-foot high brown leather seat cause it'll be a doozy.  And don't expect any sympathy from the waiter...he just wants you to pay the bill and leave a tip cause his shift's over in 10 minutes.

I don't eat crappy diner food so was skeptical when Henry, my new drinking buddy, suggested we hoof it here after closing Zig Zag, but 13 Coins violated several laws of food service physics. My subjectivity may have been compromised, it must be noted, as I was jet-lagged, hammered and had consumed my previous meal some 17 hours previously.

Violation #1  The bigger the menu, the more diverse the offerings, the worse the food.

Violation #2  Open 24 hrs = Good eating only if less than 20 seats--preferably stools--and if the place has been has been there forever, or is a hot dog truck.

Violation #3 Waiters and cooks can not exist in the same space. If not separated by a physical barrier, they will annihilate each other in a burst of gamma-profanity.

I had the "Hangtown Fry"--a bacon and oyster frittata with onions and peppers--quite frickin' awesome. It was a tad expensive, $20 with an unsweetened iced tea, but they refilled twice without my asking.

The decor was straight out of a Connery-era James Bond villain's lair--we sat at the counter in swiveling, cocoon-backed black leatherette power-stools across from the controlled chaos and flames of the open kitchen as two cooks and a waiter danced the Mamoushka.

Open 24 hours. 7 days a week. Every day of the year. (Yes, even on holidays.) What other places can say that? Hmm, Denny's, 5-point, etc. Mostly greasy spoons, certainly not places where you can get STEAK AND LOBSTER at 3am. Nice!

I had the Dungeness crab Eggs Benedict, which was ok. I would probably get something different next time (the pan-fried oysters looked good) but really, where else are you going to find all the crazy stuff on their menu like steaks and seafood and SNAILS that's open 24 hours?

I probably wouldn't choose to come here during the day for breakfast/lunch/dinner, but it's awesome to have around when it's the middle of the night and you want some food!

They serve a weird little platter of pickled vegetables and sliced meat, and a bread basket when you sit down. SO WEIRD! But good. Definitely an interesting place that uniquely Seattle. The place has a total 1960's vibe about it with dark leather chairs and whatnot.

Definitely a place to check out at least once - I was prepared for either a) it totally sucking or b) it being completely awesome, based on the Yelp reviews. I gave it a try and I'm glad I went, so there!

While I have great late night memories of 13 Coins circa 9 years ago, I was disappointed by the breakfast I had there with friends recently. Our snooty server should have tipped us off to the mediocre experience that lay ahead, but we were hopeful. When my husband asked the server if the grapefruit or oj was fresh, his response was bordering on disgust as he said, "No, man, it's from a can". I suppose the servers there don't appreciate questions about the menu items...how rude of us!

I asked for an eggs florentine without the egg, which i've done at many places and it's never been a problem- should it be that much trouble to NOT cook an egg and put it on the plate?????? When my food arrived, the egg was there on the plate drowning underneath the overly oily and far too salty/lemony hollandaise sauce, sitting atop the sopping wet not at all crispy english muffin.

As most people do, I adore the vintage over the top decor of 13 Coins, but the food has gone downhill and the service has most definitely followed. If you're in the market for something tasty and sassy, I would suggest Glo's Diner or Peso's for a yummy breakfast in a fun atmosphere...sorry, 13 Coins- your service isn't worth a dime.

I have to point out a few things regarding some of these reviews...

1) 13 Coins DID have a distinct "sag" in quality... as noted by The Stranger article on the wall as you walk into the entryway (between outside and inside, effectively)... and they worked daggum hard to bring things back up.

2) ASK QUESTIONS. See, if you are wanting seafood, maybe a 24/7 place isn't it? I can't really say... I asked questions. I found out that the minestrone we shared was all made from scratch, broth never prefab there... quite important when you're like me and MSG makes you utterly sick to the point of taking that booth up on its offer to let you scooch yourself down in a fetal position for 24 hours or so...

The first time I went, we'd been to The Saint for Happy hour, to El Corazon for ... um... the Air Sex Championship... and well, everyone else hit the Hurricane. I was actually gonna go to Habesha, but they closed the kitchen early. This place saved us from the Hurricane and its crowd of drunk, smelly, loud, drunk, loud, smelly, drunk people and decidedly awful food (hey, if even the bread is nearly inedible, it's not worth my dime--Subway isn't that far away, after all, and their bread is edible.

That first time, I was with a dear vegetarian friend of mine. I LOVE the spinach-gorgonzola ravioli. I've had it since. So have friends. All swooned. I've had the duck. Not as amazing but GOOD. I've had the gorgonzola cheesecake (bits of it): savory, too much for 1 person to eat at one time, so I see it as a great appetizer/finisher in lieu of a cheese plate.

Did i mention NUMI teas? They just bring me the whole assortment and even if I use more than 1 bag, they don't charge extra and bring as much H2O as I need.

What else? Oh, Hmm, 6? times later, the ravioli is (price and taste matching up) the most frequent meal (loved by ALL even carnivores, BUT if the cheese on top isn't fully melted, have them shove it under the heat lamp--it MUST be melted. Period.... The seafood alfredo was really well done and likewise... so rich it was easy to share. Some came home. It survived a gentle reheating, too.

This is my absolute go-to spot when I'm near it, especially as I'm never sure what's open. The prices are high, yep, for much of the food, but who's getting crab/lobster at 3am? That's more a catering thing for me anyway. In any case, hot ravioli, superbly cozy booths, sweet people (SO sweet), managers that care... I'm pretty sure some of the 1 star reviews are--even if recent--not reflective. I've been so many times and NEVER had anything bad. The duck was the only kind of "regular" thing, and the other person LOVED it (it was juicy, tender, prepped right... but the sauce was too mild for me--I want intense berry flavor; theirs was gentle and savory--overall the cost was the reason it's only "ok" to me--expensive stuff and they use local goods as much as possible--what isn't from scratch is from local companies like cucina fresca making a couple special pasta items for them).

Anyway, my tired feet, aching back, usually did-too-much-today self always retreat here when I'm stuck in the emptiness that is downtown or Capitol Hill or Lake Union after hours. I have been only writing reviews that I think are needed. This... yeah. They deserve a chance. If you don't like it, SEND IT BACK already. Get something else. They won't be offended if they messed something up/it's too tough or whatnot. They want to make you happy. Both late night managers are active in the prep of foods--they are hands on managers. I appreciate that a LOT. Our most frequent waiter, too, is just awesome, even though he seems kind of shy and is quite "proper" for Seattle. :) PS write comments ... they have paid attention to EVERYTHING I've said... and it's been better (when ordering the same thing) each time. That's a good sign, hmm?

It's been years since we went to the 13 Coins, but it was exactly what we needed last night. We sat in a two-top booth looking out at the bar, which looks as if it should be propped up by Dino and Frank. Maybe Roger Sterling. I love the 40s/50s look of the place so much it makes me nostalgic for smoking in restaurants.

We each had steak, and himself had French onion soup. The steak was good, tasty, nicely looked. The sides were delicious: simple spinach with a ton of garlic (sorry, co-workers), thick fries piled like Jenga pieces, and (my favorite) sauteed mushrooms. The waitress was wonderful. As we hummed and hawed over a couple of different wines, she brought us a little of each to try.

The 13 Coins is NOT cheap. Steak entrees are $30+. Also, for such a traditional steakhouse, you'd think they'd have mashed potatoes, but no (steaks come with a side of pasta which the waitress was kind enough to whisk away for me). I'm not even sure it's good value. But it's dark and comfortable and stylish in its own way and fun, and I'm definitely not leaving it seven years till the next time.

The atmosphere is a little bit more lounge like and mature.  I wouldn't take the little ones there, but if you're looking for a great upscale food and want to settle down with your friends or your significant other.  13 Coins is the perfect place for you.  Their menu is very versatile.  The portions are huge and half orders are available, I believe.  The pesto clam is delicious and the crab alfredo sauce pasta is splendid!  The filet mignon' is excellent.  Just have the Chef butterly it in half for even grilling.    I really like going there sometimes to enjoy some great food, but not have to totally be decked out and did I mention the high chairs and the pure privacy? Also the staff are professional yet friendly. So if you're willing to spend a little more and doesn't mind the dark roomed atmosphere.  You'll enjoy 13 Coins just like me and many others alike.

Zillions of reviews for this well-known restaurant,  so who will care about mine?  In any case...this is a place which can be very satisfying if you know what to order and what to avoid.  Now I KNOW that such a statement is not something which one would say about a really good restaurant,  where everything offered should be up to snuff,  but the Coins "is what it is" and I'm way past the point where I can stomach 24-hour crap-holes like The Hurricaine or Beth's or the frat-boy cum-gang banger poser scene at Dick's Drive In.

Free advice:  DON'T order pasta dishes...they don't work and are nearly always overcooked.  DON'T order the egg dishes...the hash browns are not even as good as the pasta here,  and are often either under- or over cooked.

DO order mixed drinks.  They have top-notch bartenders,  also a decent and fairly-priced wine list.  DO order a steak,  if that is your "meat" so to speak.  Tell them how you want it cooked and it will come out that way.  DO order things from the special sheet or special of the day...those dishes are always fresh and better than most of the regular menu items.  DO ask for less or no sauce on entrees and sides of vegetables...they will taste better.  DO order dessert but try the more interesting selections such as the Zabaglione (sp?),  a hot and runny marsala-flavored "pudding" made to order with egg yolks.

And here is a major "do"...DO order a salad,  either an entree or as a starter.  That is the one area where they excell and never miss.   And DO appreciate the fact that they are indeed there, 7/24/365.  I've been going there since I was a Freshman at the U of W (1972) and I would also say that the food they've been dishing out during the past two or so years is the best they have ever done.

A "P.S" about seating:  If you are still into the "show" aspect of the scene,  and are entertained by line cooks hollering for no other reason than the fact that they can,  ask for the Chef's counter.  If you want some peace and quiet,  ask for the Pantry counter...a world of difference.

I went with a small group of friends and sat in a booth, which has very high walls. The ambient lighting is soft. The place seems too classy for shorts and a T-shirt, but probably not enough to require very formal wear. There is a complimentary appetizer dish of random finger foods (cherry tomatoes, etc).

There is a minimum food purchase of $6 (?) per person! Sharing a dish will add an additional $2! As I already ate when I arrived, I got myself a manly Mangotini. Surprisingly, they did not skimp on the alcohol like many other restaurants would do. The glass was not wiped down apparently, as my fingers stuck to the mango-ness on the stem.

There is a bar with happy hour, and there are live bands on certain days.

They are open 24 hours a day, and yes they serve breakfast items all day. If you are looking to satisfy your steak and eggs needs, you might be better served at Denny's, where it would seem the quality is roughly the same (how can eggs be cooked differently?), but the price difference is much more noticeable.

Ahahaahaha... oh wait, this isn't a joke?

The 24-hour Menu: If you're in the mood for the Olive Garden, but just don't feel like you're paying quite enough for it, might I recommend 13 Coins?

A friend had a scallop curry which cost in the mid-20's and was much worse than any of the seafood curries you can get from Thai restaurants all over town. The smoked salmon fettuccine was like eating a vaguely smokey block of starchy cheese.

I guess being open in the middle of the night is a saving grace, but charging drunks a lot for shit just makes you a dick. I'd rather eat at the Hurricane, which is saying a lot, since what will happen to your intestines is right there in the title.

Maybe the 24-hour menu is the weak point, but that seems like a pretty large weak point. I felt bad for my visiting friends, who were excited to go after it was built up by a friend who used to live here. They all left incredibly, incredibly disappointed.

I came here for a late dinner at around 1030 or 11p with a small group. The atmosphere was dark and really old-fashioned. We were brought back to the 1930's with the music, decor, and cushion seating! A fun and new experience.

The food wasn't that great, but decently priced. My friends ordered off of the 'breakfast' menu and I got the French Dip ($10). The bread was a bit dry, but the fries were good! I also tried a chocolate cake on their special dessert menu and it was perfectly moist! $5 for cake + $2 a la mode. Not too bad!

It is one of those places that you just have to try. Setting and mood are worth a trip though if you like that kind of era! It is also open 24-hours, which can be convenient. They have a parking lot so parking isn't a big issue!

Excited to go to 13 Coins for the first time, I worked my lunch serving shift yesterday and zipped home to get ready to meet a group of friends.  Having made $90 in tips, I was already spending it in my head on the delicious sounding food from the menu I found online.  I walked into the Boren Ave. location and sat down in the lounge at the long table up front.  I sat for over 10 minutes without one single staff member approaching me.  I thought I caught eyes with the bartender; apparently not.  I smiled at scurrying wait staff and manager-appearing types patiently waiting for someone to offer me a beer; this NEVER happened.  Fifteen minutes later, five people came in and sat at the other end of the long table, at which point, the bartender came out from behind the bar to greet them.  When he returned to deliver their drinks some 5 minutes later, he stood right next to me and yet I remained drinkless.  Needless to say, I met my 8 person party outside, and we dined elsewhere.

It's like eating in Pat Cashmans hair. I mean that in the most endearing way possible. Pat Cashman is a local celebrity that use to do this skit on Almost Live, I don't recall the entire skit I just remember he was schmarmy as all get out and his hair must have had about 3 quarts of motor oil in it. Imagine if you will Vegas being channeled through a car dealer, your kinda cool uncle and you have pat cashman and 13 coins.

I love cheesecake. I ordered my cheesecake. My cheesecake had pineapples in it, with strawberries on top. All of the food is like this. EXTREME  in a  1950's Dean Martin over the top weird but good sorta way.

Remember those crazy cookbooks your grandmother had laying around that called for pinapples in everything. Like mmm pinapple, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Maybe its just me but Iam pretty sure 13 coins is cooking from those books.

13 coins is in the wrong place and the wrong time. It belongs back in the 50's, in Vegas. It would have been a place that the classy dames and dukes hung out after a long night of listening to sinatra and gambling.  Maybe next time I wear a tux, get in a fist fight with a manager, stumble drunk with my singer friend and dance in the rain I will go to 13 coins to top off my night, proper.

Personally, I feel like all these people complaining about how bad the food is and how expensive it is and how there are better late night eating options are crazy.  13 Coins food is medicore and is overpriced for what you get, but please tell me where else I might stuff my face with pretty darn tasty Eggs Benedict at 3 am??  Where else can I get (quite tasty) Fried Ravioli after hitting up the bars all night?

$55 for two appetizers, a cup of soup and a Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict ain't cheap, but what are your other options?  Hurricane?  Eeeewwww.  Denny's???  I'll pass.  Fast Food?  Maybe if I had a few more drinks.  When it comes down to it the servers are all way entertaining and Breakfast food is consistently good.  Notice I said Breafast food is consistently good.  Non-breakfast food is not so tasty.  I've had some really bad tasting pastas, steaks and salads here and the prices are pretty intense for what you get!  But my personal favorite is definitely the Eggs Benedict.  The Hollandaise sauce is creamy and slightly tangy and citrusy.  So buttery as well!

And Fried Ravioli?  Interesting..... crispy, cheesy, gooey goodness!  Beyond these items though everything is pretty hit or miss.  The salads are always bland, soggy and overdressed.  The steaks come pretty chewy and the seafood doesn't seem especially fresh.  Overall, the menu seems pretty outdated but there are a few winners on the menu.  Breakfast!  Seriously, go for breakfast items.

It may not be the best establishment to go to during "normal" eating hours, but after a night of drinking and clubbing this place hits the spot... and I really can't think of anywhere else to eat that's remotely decent at 3 am so feel free to give this place a try!

On my way back home, I needed to grab a bite to eat.  And this place caught my eye on my drive back.  As soon as i walked in i was sort of taken back by the decor and atmosphere.  There are these large, plush swivel chairs that line the counter.  The menu was fairly decent and it was nice to see the staff prepare the food in front of you.  The waitress was fairly attentive and it wasn't terribly expensive.  For a 24 hour restaurant. this place is pretty impressive given the stigma these sort of places have.  I'd definitely go again.

so where to eat at 2am after a flight in from SF? 13 coins of course. open 24 hours so this is the spot where the bar-closers trek to. decent food to soak up all the alcohol even though WE werent drunk but if we were, this is where we would go. huge portions of diner-type food.

13 Coins:

1)  over-priced diner food
2)  nice decor...a lot nicer than your ordinary diner
3)  ummm...i 'think' you're opened 24 hours?!
4)  the place to dine post clubbin'...so we were told
5)  was my grilled cheese sandwich really $20?!
6)  oh hell!  i guess when ur drunk and it's 3am...it doesn't really matter,
     right?

chicken fried steak.

enemy of the thighs, but much beloved by the taste buds, i had turned a blind stomach toward this savory treat for far too long. three dehydrated and hungry girls set out for brunch following a late night method man and redman concert, and after i spied this item on the menu, i would look no further. it arrived crispy and hot, smothered in a luscious bacon gravy, perched beside my over-medium eggs and crunchy hashbrowns. while eating it more than once a year might or might not require a triple bypass, the rich breakfast treat was exactly the calorie-laden start to my day that i needed. one of my girlfriends got the italian sausage omelet, filled to the brim with chunks of yummy, fennell-filled italian sausage, peppers and onions, and bubbly cheese; and the other stuck with a traditional scrambled eggs and bacon. i had bites of both and they were excellent. they rounded out the meal by splitting a waffle with ice cream on top, and i finished up with the mixed berry parfait. and yes, we ate EVERYTHING. after the cook sent out the food, we heard him mutter from behind the counter, "now THOSE are customers."

13 coins is almost impossible to find, and isn't much to look at from the outside. but inside, it's is all dark wood and leather, high-backed booths and counter stools that look more like thrones, and the food is tasty and affordable. our server was funny and impressed by our eating prowess, and told us the story of how the restaurant got its name: there's an old peruvian tale about a boy who was in love with the chief's daughter and wanted her hand in marriage. all he had to offer was 13 coins, but he loved her so much that the chief decided it was enough. and just like the chief who gave the poor peruvian boy a chance, you too should look past a shabby exterior and see the mouthwatering goodness that lies within.

Drinks and appetizers for happy hour then the amazing shrimp louis salad for dinner. Tami in the lounge is a great server.  I especially love the fried calamari.
Went into the restaurant and Randall served us and he was great too!
Will be back as usual

There is something charming about anachronistic places like 13 Coins.  It reminds me of mafia-owned joints back in New York City that are open all night and have everything you can think of on the menu (but none of it especially good).

I heard about it a long time before I went there.  Two friends who love good food said they wanted to take me, not because the food was so good but more that it was one of those Seattle experiences (like going to get a bag of Dick's for the first time).  Actually, the feeling I get from going into 13 Coins is reminiscent of what it is like to go into The Dresden Room in Los Angeles, or perhaps like the old Chasens, with a bit less of the charm.  The place is definitely old school.  The decor and menus are stuck in time.

I've eaten there two or three times.  I didn't get sick.  The food was about what I expected.  It is not the kind of place that is trying to impress anyone.  It concerns me that their menu options are as diverse as they are as they don't seem to have nearly the amount of customer turnover as it would require to keep all of those things fresh and in stock.  A menu that broad reeks of pre-fab, frozen food restaurant supplies and kitchen shortcuts.

Seattle sometimes seems like a place that rolls up the sidewalks at 10pm so it is great that there is a place that has everything and is open all night.  Part of me feels good about supporting 13 Coins principally because it is a dinosaur and restaurants with that much character should be kept open if for no other reason that so we can see how far we've come since the cuisine of the 1970's.  But that's not really the best reason that you should want to go into a restaurant. All things considered, you should try it once.  Go in without expectations.

For starters if your looking for good food before you fly out of sea-tac airport, then you gotta go here.  Its a bit pricey for most items, but if you carefully scan through the menu you can find some cheaper options.  The food is good and the portions are generous.  My only complaint is that is took 45 minutes to get an order of french dip and a clubhouse sandwich.  One of the chefs making the clubhouse was very slow and it was part my fault since I didn't tell the waiter my husband needed to make a flight.....which he did make.  The atmosphere is dark, the booths are extreme high back, almost to the ceiling, and if you sit at the bar you can watch the chef's make the food.

Staff was friendly and very funny guy, sat down with me and told me some funny stories. Gotta love this place.

Has it really been nearly three months since I last wrote a Yelp review?

In any event, 13 Coins is an icon, a paean to the 60's since I don't think it has ever been remodeled.

Love their leather-lined booths --- they have lots of privacy.  But that privacy does make you have to squeeeeze sideways to get  in and out....difficult to do after too much holiday eating.  But  I digress.

Came here for an off-hour breakfast on a weekday.  It was uncrowded and service was attentive.  I had typical breakfast food: eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and toast.  My meal was fine, except maybe the hash browns were rather mooshy on the inside.

JP had a seafood omelet was that was deemed delicious.

Somewhat spendy, but not outrageous.

I've visted here each time I've visited Seattle-once at the one downtown, and all the other times at the one near the airport.  The musicians are a little hokey, but the service was good and the food tasty and plentiful. I love the pasta dishes-like seafood fettuccine.  Leave the omelets and eggs benedict alone! I prefer the lamb or non grilled chicken options.

I'm always on the hunt for the next Brinner place (breakfast for dinner) and 13 is one of my favorite spots especially since it's 24 hours. It's dark, clean and inviting. if you're counter side and listen well you can catch up on all the great stories the chefs spin while they flambe things to your hearts content. Anything with fire = good. I like to come here during "the dark parade", that in-between time just before the bars let out and four am but I've been known to pop in whenever. The waits are usually not too long at this time but can be hectic around the holidays or Friday nights but for the most part you can get a good seat and some great conversation in with no problem. They even have a large-party room and a separate lounge area that has live music on occasion. Kinda cool if you ask me.

What I love: I can show up after a long night of studying in sweatpants with bedhead and and still get served like I'm a queen. Plus the waiters know just how much conversation needs to be said and when the hard drinks need to be poured. They're on it with the drink refills and their dishes are hearty yet divine. You can usually feed two on one entree and the chefs don't flinch at the word "substitution" like most other places. Sure, it costs a bit more than some places but you don't have to be Oprah rich to get good hearty comfort food (I discovered this place as a poor art student mind you...)

So yeah, when you feel like going out for a nice date or just want to get away with some friends and have some comfort food and good service, hop in to 13.

I would give this 3 and a half stars if I could give half stars.  This is a nice late night dining location.  They have a large menu with lots of options though it is a little pricey for what it is.  They have a full bar and actually a seperate loungy bar area in the back.  A nice place for post-bar cup of coffee and some grub.  Request a booth if you want to talk - they feel kind of godfather -esque and are cushy.  If you do sit at the bar, it can get very loud so just know it will be harder to talk but there is usually less of a wait for the bar area.

Also open 24 hours though I have never gone during the day.

Oh and if you are a fan of grilled cheese like I am, you can get one there even though its not on the menu - just ask. I've had one almost every time I've gone.

Nice bonus is there is plenty of free parking at night.

13 Coins is a little slice of breakfast heaven in the city known as Seattle.  When we finally recovered from our 23 hours of travel from Boston and bachelorette shenanigans, we wanted breakfast. Badly. But it was 12 PM on a Friday.... where to go? The kind concierge at our Marriott directed us to 13 Coins.

And my god, THANK YOU!!  It was DELICIOUS. Yes, the prices are higher than a diner. But the quality of the food (ok, well the bacon, which is a food group all on its own), was excellent, not to mention the thick cloth napkins and very private booths. In Baw-ston, this meal would have cost 3 times what it did here (~$42 for all three of us), and I felt like I was royalty! Or at least sitting in the nice steak house equivalent of a 24 hour restaurant.

When I go back to Seattle (and you know I will be), I'll certainly make it a point to stop here. Maybe twice, so I can try out what looked like a delicious lunch menu. Thank you, 13 coins, for saving our hung over breakfast-craving asses.

So i came to 13 coins on friday nite for a late night date w/ my boyfriend. Service was friendly. I like the decor. makes me feel like im in some sort of mensclub or something haha. large oversized chairs on the counter and the booths are arranged so strangely. you can't see to ur left or right but you can see ppl coming in front or behind u haha (depending which side of the table you're sitting at)

I ordered the steak and prawns and chose filet mignon. I asked for medium but got medium rare almost rare. but it's ok, i like rare steaks n all. but was sorta disapointed in not getting what i ordered. what if i was someone who didn't want that much red? the bread basket and sides are so random, i have no idea why you would eat bread butter and random pickled veggies. but regardless. something to munch on while we waited

my prawns were delicious. wish they put more than one mushroom on my steak tho. i mean im paying 40something for the damn thing. lol

my boyfriend he got the steak, eggs and hashbrown plate. the hashbrowns are pretty darn good. the steak was yummy but didn't compare to my fillet mignon!

so bottom line. good place to go to have a nice expensive dinner at whatever time you please since they're open 24 hours a day. but im not so sure if id make the trip again to visit this place. the bill was 66 bux and we left a 16 dollar tip making it total to 82 dollars for two people to eat. and we didn't get dessert or drinks. sorta pricey. but it was date nite. i wanted to try the place.

i wasn't disappointed. food was good and i like our server. just some things don't match up. it reminds me of a sharis, but with better food quality and triple the price tag. lol

Eggs Benedict at 1:30am. Not bad. I think the best thing about this place is the relish tray you get when you are seated.

Oh shnaps! Before I even get into it please know that you should wear a pair of pants that have an elastic waist. If not that have pants that have some spandex in them as they will stretch out after eating the massive plates these cats put on your table.

The food is great AND really heavy. Check your diet at the door fatty.

Yeah, you definitely get a rat pack sort of vibe on this place, like maybe if you don't leave a good tip Guido will come out from the back and break your kneecaps. I've been here twice both times with out of town friends and man I just don't enjoy it. The food is mediocre and overpriced, I've had a salmon dish that was bland and watery and a pasta dish that was bland and watery. So if you like bland and water, this is your place. The bonus is that it is open all night... maybe not such a big bonus.

I got back here a few days ago for breakfast and had a pretty mediocre experience. The waiter was a complete goofball who didn't seem to know what he was doing, and in fact he disappeared halfway through our meal.  He asked if I wanted hash browns with my Hungarian Joes Special which I said  yes to. But he made no mention that it was an additional 5 bucks(the menu is very hard to decipher as far as sides  are concerned).

The substitute waiter brought my Joes which had no sour cream or mushrooms and when I commented that it didn't seem like the right thing he argued with me. But about 2 minutes later I heard the short order chef agruing with him. He apparently had grabbed my plate before the chef had put everything on it so he brought a second plate of Joes with the proper additions. But it ddn't matter much, it was bland. The Chicken Fried steak we ordered had a gritty gravy with a tinny flavor.

If Sinatra had been eating there he'd have gone back and punched someone in the snnozz.

How poetic - Seattle's fancier Dennys... near Denny way.

Target audience - the tired, the semi-poor, the huddled masses yearning to eat grease.  Also, the hustlers, bustlers, boosters, and h*s.  Oh yeah, the drunks, too.

Optimal Seating - Sit at the bar (they have comfy high backed swivel chairs) and watch the cook cook... or watch your neighbors get woken up by the servers with a gentle touch and a "hey, don't pass out, your food's here."

TIP* -  Show the waiters your best swiveling Dr. Evil impression (ONE BILLION DOLLARS) on the high back chairs and if you do it right, you get extra fries.  No joke.
