I love a good night out to 103 Harriet. Drinks are a little on the pricey side. Watch out for the fotogs, as your face will wind up on SFGATE. Things are always bumpin here. Good music, always an affordable ticket to see some great DJs. Note: pregame the shit out of yourself before you go here. I"m not paying $9.00 for a drink in a plastic cup. I'll keep going back to this place over and over.

I would have given it more stars if drinks were cheaper!!

I loved a lot of things about it.

    1) TOTALLY NOT MY SCENE.  A lot of tweakers and people wearing weird ass-shit, but I don't mind.  I was a bit over dressed but I'm always overdressed anyway.

    2) For what it is, SO FUN!!  They have a hip hop-ish room and an EDM room.  Loved both!  Loved that the ceilings were so high because it didn't get too hot.

In short, it's just a fun place to get weird.  It really Berkeley-esque, I guess you could say?  I had a great time there, but it's not a girls night out place at all.  It's more of a .... go to a club by yourself and act like a weirdo and no one would care kind of place.  Like if you needed to let loose but didn't want any of your friends to know how weird you get kind of place...

    Don't catch my drift??

Well that would make sense because I'm not sober either.

I think a good 90% of people here were on some type of uppers.

SBTRKT show here killed. Even though it didnt start til 12:20am on a Thursday night, we loved the DJ all night too - great electronic mixes, but not techno, still with good bass and an awesome beat that you actually can dance to. Also pretty spacious. Decor a little sleek/modern for the music & the hipster crowd. Theres a 2nd room with the stage (where concert was held) - stand in the right front corner looking at the stage, theres a HUGE breeze from some ceiling vent there and you will not leave sweaty and gross for once.

Will def be dragging my friends here more often on weekends. We go to Bootie way too much.

Venue is eh ok, but staff definitely needs to fix their organization skills.

A friend and I attended the Brainfeeder SF event and we had will call tix.  Stood in one massive general admin, will call, already have tickets line. One staff member shouted for all the will call folks to step off the curb, checked our IDs, and told us to go inside and talk to ticket booth person because she had out tickets.

Get inside, almost at ticket booth and then guy inside tells us to gtfo because will call is outside.  Tell all the will call people behind us guy said we need to gtfo.

We gtfo another staff member says will call line is here (points to disorganized and confused mass of general admin, already holding tickets people.  Will call people get stank eye.

Then another staff member says will call list is with her, but doesn't have the list because someone else has it.  Wait another 15 min. wondering wtf is going on.

IDs checked again and directed back inside to the ticket booth to pick up tickets.  Miss 90% of the Teebs set.

Still a good night, but staff looked confused as heck.

Oh, FYI, if you get disoriented because of the lights, go upstairs and you'll enjoy the music better.

Next to the music selection, the best thing about this venue is location.  It is located right off the 101.  Can I get three cheers for less street traffic?!  Also, street parking is golden since it can be found within a 2 block radius.

The bar is cash only, but there is an ATM on the lower level.  I'm not a big fan of the layout, since I can't really lurk the deejay's style during my disco workout.  Even when on stage, club visibility is generally low.  What can I say?  My eyes appreciate some good lurkage.  The venue isn't visually stimulating either and although interior aesthetics aren't so weighty in my reviews, I do appreciate pretty insides.

This venue usually brings in an interesting, fun crowd.  I could write a book on my encounters.

Was dragged here despite my kicking and screaming that dubstep isn't that friggin amazing and gets old pretty quick. Lowriderz and Pantyraid proved me wrong. Luckily for me they not only threw down the dubstep but also breaks, dnb, n' facemelting techno.
The sound is pretty sweet here and the light show is dazzling - the visuals on the screens could be taken up a knotch. Parking was surprisingly easy to find - always a plus.
Get a buzz going before you show up or else you will spend all your money on $12 cranberry juices masquerading as cocktails. And if you're high as a kite don't get sloppy, the security is itching to eject people that are a little too stumbly/droopy with their eyes rolling to the back of their head.

My first experience with 103 Harriet was just this past Friday, March 4th, for Low End Theory SF and it was the best time I've had in a while as far as shows go. Such a dope lineup: Gaslamp Killer, D-Styles, Free The Robots, and Flying Lotus! (among others). What more could you want?

Anyway, more about the venue: It's very simple to find, and with as many people there were and as late as I was (10 minutes before the show), I was surprised how close I was able to find street parking. I was a bit confused when I got there, as there were about 5 lines; 3 for roll call, where they gave you a ticket after you checked in, a line to go in after you got that ticket, and a line to buy tickets. The security there is super chill; perhaps a bit too chill. I wasn't searched at all. Once I was inside, though, and the music was playing it didn't matter much to me.

The inside could use a little bit of work, but in all honesty, once you're in there and you are feelin the music, the last thing that matters is how pretty the interior is. Apparently, there are multiple stories in this building. I didn't check the second floor until I was leaving, and it looked like some sort of line was at the lower floor so I didn't bother with that. I spent all night right in the front of the main floor watching the DJs and producers work their magic, and it was such a cool thing to see. Set after set, the artists brought it and the crowd fed off it and danced the night away. There was so much low end! I literally felt the music that night. Not that I'm complaining or anything, I love that kind of stuff.

Word is that Low End Theory is a monthly thing here at 103 Harriet, and for that alone I am a fan of this place. I'd definitely come back, and if other shows here are anything like what I experienced on Friday, then perhaps I'll be here more than once a month.

I was ready to call it a night this past Friday.

My eye makeup was smeared. My feet were tired. A hot shower was calling my name.

But there was something restless inside me that would just not sit still. I couldn't sit still. While searching for my pajama sweats, I fumbled with my phone and messaged some close friends to see what they were up to (I have always had this strange desire to know what everybody's else night is shaping up to, so I can feel better about my own late night choices).

My friend texted me back that she was going to a show at 1015 Folsom/103 Harriet. I was about to shrug it off, when something inside me stirred me on to call her.

"So who's this DJ at 103 Harriet?"

    "Rusko."

That's all I needed to hear. In a matter of minutes I was towel drying my hair, while awkwardly trying to pull on my shoes and apply mascara at the same time.

    It was an epic night.

    An epic night.

(this was my third visit to 103 Harriet as an event space)

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about the night was walking through the front doors and seeing the capacity sign read over a 1,000 people.

Where else do you see that in the city?

    Where else?

Now I know that 1015 Folsom/103 Harriet often gets a bad rap for their too tight and overly gruff security, who will personally hand pat guys down on sight (women seem to have it a lot easier), their steep cover, and their over-priced bottled water and drinks; but their potential as an event space is remarkable. Especially for San Francisco.

They have large rooms which can accommodate a diverse group of artists, music, and people. It's a full on -  club. A real club, where midriff baring girls climb up on go-go stages next to the headliner's booth, and whisper things in his ear -  while he spins. It's a club where you can get lost in the lights and pounding music. Where you can make out familiar San Francisco green smells. It's a club where you can still be dancing after 3:00am, taking breaks to relax on white pleather couches, while a DJ woos your heart and body with his magnificent mixing.

103 Harriet mixes up their music - so be sure to study their event calendar hard before making a trip out here. The crowd largely reflects the genre of music playing, and I'm certain some nights can be big let-downs, but 103 Harriet was worth the 20 dollar cover this past Friday.

My friends and I hip-rolled our butts off - to the sexy Dub Step beats well into the morning. There was an abundance of space to move. The sound was killer. And the crowd was refreshingly varied and warm.

A guy was mopping the floor at 4:00am as we reluctantly made our way home.

I continued to dance the morning away in my room until the sun came up.

    Trust.

1015 pulled the old bait and switch with me on this one.  Went to a show expecting to explore a new venue and what did I find?  Bouncers standing on Harriet Street, ushering confused party-goers into the front door of 1015.  This "new" venue boasts the same outrageous door price, same overpriced, weak-ass drinks, same skanky crowd on the dancefloor (even the same freaking dancefloor), and same overblown sound system (bleeding eardrums, anyone?) as its "neighbor" 1015.

I feel scammed by 1015, whose ownership must have figured out that no one wants to party there anymore.  How about this for an idea? -- Instead of tricking people into coming to your club, why don't you do something to fix the things we hate about it so much? (See above.)

With all respect due the first reviewer (who is undoubtedly cooler and hipper than I, I mean that sincerely), 103 Harriet reminded me of nearly everything I disliked about 1015 and other clubs of that ilk.

Staff (security and events here, not the bartenders who were exceptional in that regard):  Arrogant and disorganized at best, hostile at worst.   Doors at 9pm turns into doors at 10:30, turns into show at 12.  Lines, a complete  fiasco.  Smoking area, a fiasco.   Upstairs access, a fiasco.  Honestly, I'm too old to go to these places looking for an argument with the staff, but this staff seemed to find one to have with me several times.

Facility:  Pretty dirty/sticky/smelly for a venue that stayed closed an extra hour just to set up.  The lounge is cute, but the dance floor/stage area is  filthy.  If you fell you'd be eaten by roaches.  Good sound at least.  It's been a while since I checked out DNA but it's on that level.

Bar:  Great service all around, and the prices aren't bad considering.

Crowd:  90% clueless club kids who could care less who was playing.  If the shortness of a willcall line is any indication, most of the folks were there last Friday for the sake of seeing and being seen at some trendy club on Friday night, not catching the Miss Kittin show.  They probably come here every week to show off their sexy new outfits and buy a candy drink without getting carded.

    Clubs like 103 just suck.

I could blame some of this lameness on the organizers for not promoting this particular show well if I knew anything about that business.  I don't, but one might get the idea that since the show was on a Friday anyway, they figured "what the hell, it will eventually sell out so why bother promoting it?"  Well, because that way you'd have a crowd who knew what the hell was going on.  I'd pay more to see the same show at a proper music venue (anything from Slims to Bimbo's to the freakin' Warfield would do) just to lose the clubber mentality.

I came here with some friends last month to see the Twelves. We were surprised that this was pretty much the big room at 1015 Folsom, only the entrance was through the alley (Harriet). There's no sign or anything. We even ran into the Twelves as we were trying to figure out where to enter from, because they were trying to figure it out too and there was no one outside 1015. Put up a sign to help us out!

Anyways, I think this place and 1015 are ok and the bartenders are decent, but they get 2 stars for having a $40 bar minimum for credit cards. They're violating their credit card merchant agreement by having minimum... I'd let it slide if it were like $20, but $40 is getting ridiculous. They also have a crap ATM that will charge you a $4 or $5 fee. Lame

103 Harriet is the hotter/cooler siamese twin attached to 1015 Folsom.

It's a smaller, more intimate, less douchy space than it's other half.  Went to the Miss Kitten show here on Friday and had a much better time than all of the shows at 1015 combined.

Strong drinks, friendly bartenders, a sexier clientele and a bodacious dance floor.

Good things do come in smaller packages!

Fuck this place. Came here for compression a couple of weeks ago after a long day at school. Had some drinks and nodded off in one of the booths only to be awakened by security manhandling me and eventually throwing me in handcuffs so tight that my wrists were swollen the next day.

These security guards are the type that can turn a potentially dope spot into something really shitty.

In addition to that drinks are overpriced (easily compatible via car bar). And what type of two bit club doesn't take credit card?!?!?

I've been a huge fan of Compression crew for years and I have nothing but love for those guys but as far as 103 Harriet goes, that place can gi fuck themselves.

    103 Harriet...

If Garage, Glitch, Dubstep, Deep House or dNb is involved, then it's a yes.  Besides the fact that a few of my buddies spin at Compression, I'll definitely show face and support their work.

On the flip side, the bartender upstairs is a complete doucher.  The drinks are more than average, so if you don't mind blowing a buck or two just to satisfy your alcohol craving, by all means, knock yourself out.  Sound quality has to be 100 times better than Mighty. But when the night is over, it kind of reminds me of when the sun comes up after an intense rave back in 99, your ears have a constant ringing till the next morning.

It's a hit and miss, you just have to keep in the loop of when the DJ's who KNOW how to spin are there that night.

Do not the the name/ address fool you.  This is 1015!  When we went out and found, to our surprise, that  the tickets we bought in advance we actually for 1015, the bouncer told us the 103 Harriet is technically the address for the basement.  Once we got inside the basement wasn't even open!  This is just a ploy to trick all those people who hated their 1015 experience to come back one more time.  Don't get suckered in!
Of course, if you like 1015...I'm sure you'll like this too.

Here's my full report of an amazing DJ set by UK mixmaster Bonobo on January 2 two-oh-oh-nine. My secret hope is that Harriet 103 will become a new HQ for electronica in the City, breaking up the trifecta (Mighty/Mezzanine/Independent). What San Francisco really needs is more dance electronica, European style.

The place is awesome. The acoustics are ace, the dancefloor is not too big but not too small (just like Mighty's). The bartenders are very nice (I asked for an Absolut Vanilla on the rocks, I got half the bottle - just to give you an idea: a glass of vodka at Harriet 103 equals 3 glasses of the same liquid at The Independent).

The crowd was totally funky, very diverse, all these tribes and clans that seem to be invisible during the day... They just materialize at night like vampires craving for juicy beats. What brings them together is they all like to move to irresistible beats, have a great time in a club, getting lost in the music. They all take part in an urban ritual that has its roots in ancient times: dance.

The techno-shaman, Bonobo, started playing around midnight, after two hours of excellent foreplay by the resident dj (that included an extended version of Mr. Oizo pleasantly annoying track - and mixing Mr. Scruff "Get a Move On" with Grandmaster Flash "The Message" was so slick! Kudos to the DJ). No visuals at this time, but  lots of laser games by a guy who looked like Sam Fisher from Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series. The overall result was very Tron-like. Funny how the Daft Punk aesthetics has become so pervasive in the electronica landscape.

The location is really cool: the club is basically a basement, a cave... Now, did you know that the first music clubs  were indeed basements? During the Nazi occupation in France, dancing and music went underground. French young members of the Resistance invented the "discoteque", small, secret basement where they could listen to jazz music ("illegal" at the time). They risked their life to smuggle and play jazz records, so they keep alternating the locations, used passwords and had special membership to make sure that they would not get discovered by the German occupants.

Times have changed, but electronica clubs still maintain that underground, sketchy, secretive, slightly shady character. Harriet 103 is, indeed, an expensive basement with state of the art equipment, but still, a basement. You still need to be "in the loop" to know about these kinds of events. And the ID check with the imperturbable, menacing bouncer is a part of the ritual.

Will Harriet 103 become THE hangout spot for electronica in 2009? Will it become a smarter, wiser, more mature version of Folsom 1015? Hope so! I'd love to see the entire Ninja Tune dream team playing here.

I came here last night for a Compression event and I definitely had a good time. My friends try to make it out here for an event at least once a month. This was my first.

I have to say, the place was rather empty that night, which I liked. Personally, I don't like crowds, but I love going out to dance. So while some people might consider it dead, I was comfortable and with my friends having a great time.

The music was bumping. I feel like the sound was a bit off on one of the floors (can't remember which). Bass knocking hard. Liked that each floor had it's own vibe. It's a very swanky place. I liked that there were a lot of places to just lounge.

The only thing I ordered from the bar was a bottle of water. Why is the mark up on a bottle of water SO high? Seriously? $4 for a bottle of water. I just refilled it in the restroom sink for the rest of the night. I was glad to have the bottle, since after last call, they collect all cups, even my cup of just ice.

I have to say, this place seems like a tightly run ship. I saw them kick two people out: one guy on the main floor sort of slumped over on one of the couches and another, this girl in the bathroom. They looked through her bag and everything. Serious business up in here. Kinda scary/intimidating. They keep the place clean, picking up flyers from the ground, cups, bottles, etc. The restrooms were tidy.

Star 1) An underground club that's actually underground. The space feels downright post-apocalyptic with grated catwalks and all. Neato.

Star 2) Biggest disco ball I've seen in the city.

Star 3) Tons of space to move about and take a breather with friends downstairs and around the upper floor, but the dance floor stays packed. It's the impossible medium that I very rarely see in a venue.

Star 4) Expert bartenders - or at least the two I interacted with. Extremely refreshing ten and tonic.

Star 5) Perhaps the biasing factor for the above four, but heck, they booked Ben Watt. There are lots of bouncy clubs in SOMA, but I can see why it was 103 that got the new master of deep house to throw down under their roof.

I know its the same place as 1015. though they use the side entrance and don't promote the shows through the normal channels..

Result the vibe has been excellent, the music coming through top notch.

Security can be assholes on some occasions, but I don't pay them no mind.

probably some of the most educated partygoers in the city come here for the right shows..

Also the two people who said something about undercover cops are just straight tripping. I have never noticed that.. plus i come for music not to sell drugs.. if thats your intention you should go to ruby skye.

ReMix 1015 by making access to various rooms more limited. Don't make it obvious that you got to head upstairs to get to the sound. Let people enter off the alley. Do you feel more underground now? Nah, but it was fun to think it at first.

I went there on a Th night (29Jan09) and the place was packed upstairs by midnight. Really, that is a great vibe for a Th night. It was promoted as being a BBC One/Mary Ann Hobbs electronic night and I was hoping for EuroTrash and some hot dancing. And? it just never materialized.

I so agree with the other reviewer, we DEF need a new homebase for electronic sounds and style in SF. I loved the bulk bin variety of peeps at the show, and agreed, everyone seemed ready to party but where was it going down? I left after midnight feeling like the it was never gonna shift.

So, 103/1015, you got the market, now show us what you REALLY  got to sell.

All the times I've gone to this venue, I've not been disappointed.  It's ok that Joker wasn't here the first night I went..that night was still very good.  But Compression with Dieselboy and The Chinese NYE night with Ooah/16bit was unbelievable.  Ooah's set was craazy.. and 16bit's was intense.  One of the best live sets I've heard..

Bartenders were very nice and friendly.  Drinks were strong.  Numerous rooms (depending on the night), spacious, and everyone that come here have a good time.  Sometimes the sound is a little off (not as loud/not enough bass at times) but they usually get it fixed and when they do it gets crazy.

I'll be coming back to this spot a lot as they have great lineups.

Things have improved. The staff at the front door has gotten more efficient and maybe 2% friendlier. Inside the club things are even better, with far less harassment and no perceptible aggressive vibe.

Good work, 103.  Keep going, though.  Not being mean isn't the same thing as being professional and nice.  You don't have to be a dick to ensure security, and you get waay more flies with honey than syrup, yo.

The bouncers were nice enough and helped me and my friends know where the bathrooms were. Drinks were cash only and I feel like in a venue this hectic just makes more sense... i guess

Just saw Salem play here and it was amazing. Sound is incredibly good. Venue staff is awesome. Bar is overpriced but what bar inside a club isnt.

    Not my scene.

The place itself is swanky and the music is LOUD. I felt like I was in a movie (think "Blade") the whole time I was here. So much bass action! Thank God for earplugs. Lots of cougars, lots of skanks dancing on the pole, lots of "fringe" types and lots of people who just love to dance.

That said, I came here to see Brian G.'s brother and his DJ crew, Strategik. The music was not bad, but I can only take so much techno ish - and certainly not six hours of it. There are two rooms, which is pretty awesome, except that no one was dancing in the first room. A long walkway/catwalk separates the rooms, with a view down onto 1015 Folsom. Two bars, with average drink prices (certainly less expensive than I expected for a dance club - $6 vodka tonics, $4-5 beers). Lots of light show theatrics which is rad, but no ins and outs? No thanks.

If an electroclash-type band I liked performed here, I'd definitely consider coming back. But I could only take so much of the club/rave/whatever scene. Luckily we bought our tickets pre-sale and (since Miles Dyson canceled) they were only $5.

I could really care less about whether or not this is just a side room of 1015. The venue is HOT. With its black walls and minimal design, it proves to be a highly versatile space that could handle any sort of electronic music. I saw Bonobo there last night, which was more or less all downtempo, trip hop with a tinge of disco. People were totally havin it. And taking one look at the spot, it's clear that it could also handle more 4/floor stuff like tech and prog.

I can only assume 1015 is behind this and kudos to them, its a brilliant move on their part to increase the versatility of their property.

Let's have a round of applause for those people who have retired their Christmas lights and glow sticks. Since my last review, I have continued to frequent the venue with their seemingly endless amount of bangin' dubstep headliners! It has progressed into the grimey, dirty, hard knockin' $H!T that I love oh-so-much! With unbeatable cover charges, this has easily become my most visited hot spot for dubstep music!

I actually went with Natalye S. below to see Simple Green/the Strategik crew spin last summer. I had such a fun time dancing that night, but I was really sad to discover that it was a separate admission fee to get into 1015 Folsom below. I am pretty sure the clubs are owned by the same people so this seems dumb to me. The people at 1015 seemed to having an amazing time and I was really digging the dj that was playing down there (couldn't figure out who it was because the stage was underneath the walkway that I was standing on) and having fun dancing from where I was but would have enjoyed it better if I could have just joined them. I guess I could have paid to go to the other club, but I sure admission was another $10-15 and I wasn't sure if I would have been allowed back up to 103 after wards (although I did see a few people wander up to 103 from 1015).

I'd go back to 103 Harriet to see Simple Green or other local djs again, but I'm more likely to go to 1015 Folsom, 111 Minna, Ruby Skye, Paradise Lounge, or DNA Lounge on any given night.

You know as long as I've known about 1015 Folsom, I had NO idea there was a side venue that they also owned. I learned something this week. A friend/old co-worker was playing a gig for this crazy non denominational holiday celebration here, so we decided to check it out. Crazy Xmas garb, raver outfits, suits and all sorts of mixed clientele. The stage was decked with African dancers at the moment and there was some Cirque Du Solei type shite going on with an acrobat woman. Pretty small intimate venue, though fairly plain and without character. I could see how this would be a great venue with the right acts.

Nice space, great sound, and bartenders who hook up a proper drink. Why two stars? First of all- the bathrooms were so dark that I could not see a thing. Meh- I've experienced better! Secondly- DAMN- Can't some girls get their groove on without undercover cops asking if they want party favors? So an undercover asked my friend if she wanted to sell some pills for him and his girlfriend in exchange for free pills? My friend declined of course- but this made us feel so uncomfortable that we ended up leaving early. Not cool!

I hate clubs. BUT I loved 103 Harriet, on a Drum and Bass night at least. Went for a b-day gathering, it wasn't crowded, I could walk around easily, there is lots of seating around the dance floors and upstairs & beers were reasonably priced. I would go again for sure and maybe even get myself out on the dance floor!

Well let's just say the only thing I liked about this place is that the 1015 main room still bumps! we came out here and man o man that was a mistake. undercover cops everywhere! I mean @ least 3 and their was less than 100 people there. It felt hot and so we left to another spot and it felt much more comfortable!

In the past few months 103 Harriet has adopted far more friendlier and efficient security and added more lights/visuals to the venue :) With their hard-hitting lineups and great venue setup, Harriet is sure to be one of my favorite SF spots for a while.

Absolutely the most well designed club in The City! The main floor is pure madness on good nights (it was mayhem during Benga and Rusko), while the other rooms offer something else if you get tired of the scenery. The only issue I have with the club is that they don't use all the rooms they have. C'mon! Make it EPIC! Other than that, awesome club!

Nice space but meh crowd. When I came here the crowd was dead and frankly the music was kind of weird. Just not my thing I guess. I did like the lack of jostling for what it's worth. Cover is $15. Which I paid and then left five minutes later. What a waste.
