These guys know cocktails and they aren't afraid to push the boundaries. I went for a bartender's choice (after telling them I'm a fan of properly done exotic -- a.k.a. tiki -- drinks).

He came up with some concoction that had kava tincture in it. It made the mouth numb and kind of reminded me of the topical they give  you at the dentist. While I'd never order that again, I was glad they had it, as it isn't something you'd experience anywhere else.

A few other less out there drinks were fabu.

Great atmosphere, great service. The food might damn well be good as well. I intend to find out.

Only complaint -- as a tiki fan, I wish they had Orgeat in stock. The Mai Tai deserves a place of honor at a place that takes cocktails seriously.

I can't say enough good things about this place. 1022 South is my go-to bar when I need a delicious drink, some tasty food, or a great spot to take someone.

Chris (the owner) and the staff are welcoming, knowledgeable, and friendly. Someone always greets me as I walk in the door. I often go by myself and sit at the bar, so I can see the drinks being expertly crafted. There is an extensive cocktail list ranging from refreshing to mysterious--one drink actually contains magic. The lavender cocktail is as good as everyone says.  I have tried quite a few different drinks, and have yet to find one that doesn't delight me. There might be some strange ones, but they are all a taste adventure. Happy hour is from 4-8 (I think) and Thursday might be ladies' night. The White Vulture is a good happy hour drink with jasmine-infused white wine and ginger soda.

The staff will give you a glass and carafe of cucumber infused water while you peruse the menu. The bartender has always answered my questions about the liqueurs or spirits with which I am not familiar. There are also beers and ciders on tap as well as bottled selections. During the cold months, they have had mugs of whiskey with warm cider for $5 on special.  The bartenders will even create a drink catered to your tastes if you desire.

Did I mention that their food is also fantastic??  There are "small bites" like almonds and cherries, goat cheese-stuffed peppadews, green beans with a balsamic sauce, orange zest and sea salt, charcuterie plate, assorted olives, etc. (All of them are highly recommended.)  Their sandwiches and salads are also divine. The BLT and muffuletta sandies are a couple of my favs, and they come with a balsamic-dressed side salad. I wish they offered more desserts, but I usually just order the green beans instead.  The chocolate/espresso torte is good.

It's a cozy spot where you may have to sit near people, but only interesting people go there. The atmosphere is jazzy yet comfortable. There's always good music and conversation in the air. The place is lit with candles and vintage-looking, light bulb pendant fixtures. Beautiful bottles fill the wall behind the bar.

There is a single, unisex bathroom in the back. Bicycle parking is available as well as
plenty of on-street spots. There are hooks to hang your coat in the back.  People don't mind scooting down a table or barstool to make room for everyone.

I hope this review encourages you to go to 1022 and try something; you can't go wrong. A new, Spring menu will be launched soon--Can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Sometimes the food & drink fates just line things up perfectly for me.  Case in point: I had plans to go see a movie with my boyfriend and his parents in his hometown of Tacoma, and immediately 1022 South and all the rave yelp reviews I'd read of it popped into mind.  I wanted to suggest it, but I also didn't want to overstep, since this is THEIR city.  Dilemma dilemma.

Then fate winked at me when post-movie, my boyfriend's mom suggests heading to a place called 1022 South, a little spot she had heard great things about.  Huzzah!

I was so excited to stop by for happy hour and try the Lavender Cocktail, which was mentioned so many times in yelp reviews it made my head spin.  It was every bit as delicious as everyone says.  Not overly floral, it was creamy from the coconut milk, with a perfect amount of sweetness, not cloying at all.  Typically I keep pace with others at the table, only ordering a second drink if others do.  So it's a testament to how outstanding this drink was that I eagerly ordered a second, no shame that I was outdrinking my company.

We also had the small cheese plate which was ok, but nothing overly special.  I definitely plan to try more small plates on our next visit, and until then I'll be dreaming about that spectacular cocktail.

Excellent atmosphere and cocktails. The small plates are tasty too but it's all the kind of stuff that doesn't require lots of cooking: charcuterie, cheese plates, etc. i highly recommend this place if you're unsure of where to go out in tacoma and want something classy.

Love this place and their cocktails!

Nothing else compares to 1022 - from the corpse reviver no.2 to the happy hour specials, you are sure to get something unique and delicious.   Tight inside, and there are sometimes long waits for service, but I promise you the wait will be worth it.

Don't forget to go in the summer when the patio is open!

I'm such a fan of 1022, and I'm not just saying that because my roommate works there.
I first came here about a year ago and was so excited to try some of the drinks on the menu, which are inventive and delicious.
My favorite little snack on the menu are the Almonds and Parmesan, perfect to go with a cocktail or glass of wine and the rotating menu always delivers.

From the moment I stepped into 1022 South, I was blown away. This place is an absolute gem. The level of craft mixology that is happening is comparable with some of the most well known NYC bars.

Owner, Chris has created a liquor cabinet that is not only enviable, but he knows how to create and utilize every single bottle behind the bar.

He makes his own syrups, bitters, juices, tonics, and probably more items that were included in my drinks. Feel free to ask questions, my husband is a strong craft bartender and he was positively giddy learning about how the different ingredients involved.

The massive drink menu changes seasonally, and I just saw on twitter that the winter one is out, I can't wait to check it out.

Growing up in the area, I've always struggled to find a worthy bar for when I'm back in town visiting. 1022 is it! I love their small plates and was pleasantly surprised upon discovering this hidden little bar last year.

On a mission to find the best old-fashioned, I can safely say that this bar still beats out every other old-fashioned cocktail I've tried across the board. They are serious about their mixology and I'm glad that Tacoma now has a bar at this caliber.

As a Seattleite who doesn't know Tacoma at all, this seemed like a hidden gem in a bizarre area of town.

Really cozy, intimate atmosphere with a speakeasy feel. Good service and great cocktails and nosh. The owner? Manager? Bartender? was super helpful and accommodating as they were out of quite a few menu options. They make their own cola and ginger beer! Definitely worth a try!

This place rocks!  I thought my GPS led me to the wrong part of town and did a slow drive by before parking and walking up to the bar.  Once inside, it was a completely different world.  I got there about 8pm and the dinner crowd was still there so I had to wait on a place to sit, but I am glad I got there early because their food was absolutely amazing!!  I ended up eating the roasted red pepper panini and I am not joking when I say it was the best panini I have ever had.  I will be back just for that!!  Then add in incredible drinks and a bowl of almonds and parm and I was set for the night.  The drinks take a few minutes to be made, but they were worth it.  So just order a new one before you go dry!!  If you haven't been and you are wondering how small they are, if you count the bar and the tables, they have a whopping 30 seats!!

Loved it. The "lavender", was incredible. Small plates were interesting we tried 4 different ones. All good.  I can't remember all the drinks we had but I  had an orange thing I didnt really like I think it had aperol and gin...eww, not my kind of drink but two people in my party liked it a lot. Get there early if you want to sit.  We did and had a good seat on a  church pew like thing that was not really comfortable but better than standing. The cucumber infused water was pleasant.  I thought the prices were a bit out there but the experience was worth it. I will  go back.

Going to give this place another shot at the title.  Despite being a "mixologist", the bartender relented and gave me what I wanted; a glass of whiskey.  Other speakeasys are not so accommodating.  Atmosphere was nice, quiet, warm and dim but the hipsters were too much to ignore, and I wanted to smack one with a hard copy of Kurt Vonnegut's complete works stuffed in a Fedora wrapped in skinny jeans.  There was a guy wearing a work shirt that said "Joe" on one side, and "janitor" on the other.  His name was not Joe and he was not a janitor.  Indignation dripping from estrogen laced cocktail, I carried on to the bathroom.  Bottom line, the place has a large selection of whiskies and I dig that.  Can't blame the place for the patrons.  See you after round two.

Their motto, "Better living through alchemy" says it all.  The craftiest of craft cocktails.  Truly seasonal, their drink and food menus change out regularly and focus on quality ingredients.  They have an extensive and delightful food menu that always includes several top-notch vegan offerings such as pate, sandwiches, and  creative dip plates.  I've never been disappointed with the nosh.  3 stars is due to the difficulty in finding a table or a barstool on most evenings and the inconsistent (sometimes amazing, sometimes hipper-than-thou) service.

1022 South is the place I want to take all my friends to in order to tell them: "See, Tacoma is kind of cool. Sure this place smells like paper mill for half the year and you might total your car in a pot hole, but we have delicious beverages and I know a good bail bonds place if the evening goes south."

The design is eclectic, but not overdone. It's nostalgic, cozy, and doesn't feel pretentious even though everything about the term "apothecary bars" says it should. The speed of the service is variable, but the staff are super nice. Yes, this bar is in Hilltop. No, it is not as scary as people make it out to be. I personally find the douche-bros that hang out at Matador and the like to be way more creepy and scary than being in a neighborhood that happens to be mostly lower-income. Get over your privilege issues people.

The drinks are the main draw at 1022 South, but I can't stop thinking about their vegan Jamaican sandwich. Delicious jerk tofu, refreshing ginger slaw, and tomatoes on the best petit baguette I've ever had. And it's cheaper than most of the drinks.

All the beverage accoutrement are hand-made or hand-squeezed which adds to the value of the experience. If you are looking to save some cash and prefer your drinks of on the fruitier side, show up for happy hour and try some of the specials like the Liza Island or the White Vulture. They are about half the price and taste as delicious as their main menu counterparts.

This place is tiny. And an NYT write up means it is also super busy mid-week through the weekend. There's no place to wait so you can either stand outside (usually in the rain) or come back another time. The crowd is interesting and a casual mix for happy hour, but quickly turns into a LATFH-fest as the night wears on. It's an apothecary bar--I wouldn't expect any less.

    1022, how I love thee.

I've tried an embarrassing number of carefully crafted cocktails on their seasonally revolving menu. I have also been treated to the expertise of the bartending staff who have taken me on fun flavor "riffs" from drink to drink when I have shared my preferences.

If you appreciate well made drinks, you will not be disappointed. I promise.

If you heart daquiris and other such sweety sweet drinks or piss water American beers, go elsewhere.

The food is quite good, but let's be real. You are there for the incredible, hand-crafted concoctions that rival any bar in Seattle. And a well traveled friend of mine proclaimed it to be the best cocktail lounge she'd experience on the Pacific Rim.

Kudos, Chris and staff. Your drinks make my heart sing.

Classy atmosphere. Think candle-lit, an eclectic but intriguing collection of books from apothecary to literature to science, and a space small enough that you might overhear your neighbors' conversation. Friendly bartenders who clearly know their liqueurs and remember you personally. But most importantly, 1022 has unique and delicious cocktail drinks that match, seriously, no other bar in Tacoma.

Each drink is like a fireworks show in your mouth as it discovers the different  spices, herbs, flowers, fruits, and liqueurs carefully combined in your glass. My personal favorites include Lavender Cocktail (vodka, lavender, lemon, coconut) and PDX (genever, grapefruit, honey, sparkling wine). From the White Vulture (a jasmine pearl-infused white wine with lemongrass ginger soda) to the Liza Island (vodka, licor 43, orange, ginger beer) these drinks seriously can't be beat.

They make their own sodas. Enough said.

It isn't cheap. But you get what you pay for.

I tend to shy away from bars that are really small, but despite what I would consider a not so favorable location, this place is pretty well put together.  We showed up for a happy hour cocktail before heading to dinner and were the only ones there except for a couple of girls at the bar.  Service was obviously immediate, and while I don't think I could afford this type of spot on a regular basis, their martinis are fantastic.  I am embarrased to say that at this point, I don't remember what all went in my something something new yorker - I remember there was rhubarb though which was totally unique.  The happy hour prices made it feel like we were pulling a fast one, and I do hope to come back and try some of their super spicy drinks.  Friends have reported that they enjoy the food as well, but as of yet, I am unable to confirm or deny these sentiments.

Either way, cute place if you've got some extra dough and well liquor just isn't going to do it for ya.

This is the best bar in Tacoma.  I found out about 1022 South from a friend in New York who sent me a recent review from the New York Times.  That seemed ridiculous, because I live less than five minutes away from it.  But was I ever glad that I did!

An apothecary bar works--we tried MANY drinks and they were all amazing.  Our favorites: Lavender Cocktail (sweetly fantastic, I could drink these daily), Beatrice Cocktail (balsamic fig? glad we trusted the bartender because it was fantastic!), and Bleu (earl grey influsion).  The flavors were so complex, things that sounded outrageous were like taste explosions in your mouth.

The only down side?  This place is not cheap.  You are getting what you pay for, but expect to pay around $10 for a cocktail.  They do have happy hour specials for $5--the Hilltop New Yorker was tasty with rhubarb bitters and the White Vulture was light and summery.  The food was also delicious; we had vegan panini sandwiches which were great.

I can't say enough about this hidden gem in Hilltop.  Check out more at: http://tmagazine.blogs...

I am in love. 1022 truly makes a cocktail an art. The drinks here are exceptional-from unique to classic. If you can not appreciate a drink here, I question your taste. Any place that concocts their own flavorings and herb and spice mixtures in the name of a savory drink has my vote. At first I thought the drinks were a little spendy. After seeing all that goes into a drink and the level of knowledge of the bartenders at 1022, I'm more than sold. They have an exceptionally long happy hour anyhow, during which a handful of cocktails are featured. The food menu is lighter fare and absolutely delicious! Enjoy!

I love this place.  The drinks are off-the-charts tasty; so is the food.  (Portions are not oversized, but adequate.)  The flavor combinations are unusual, imaginative, and superb.  The overall theme seems quasi-Victorian.

Everything is hand-made, and 1022 is often very crowded.  With this in mind, the prices and speed of service are understandable.

I live about thirty-five minutes away from 1022 South but I have to agree with the previous review from 'ruthy g.' about not wanting to share this place.

A great place to go if you are in search of a well-made, creative, and adventerous cocktail. It also works if you are looking for a shot of whiskey served with an over-sized ice cube. It was a pleasure to observe the bartender as he carefully crafted these cocktails. At the risk of sounding goofy, it looked as if he were scientifically measuring with potions and beakers. The charcuterie plate, while not very filling if shared, was incredibly indulgent.

I would also suggest this bar for smaller parties. It is very cozy and there is not much seating. We went recently on a Sunday night and it was still fairly busy.

I would not suggest this place if you are looking for a pool table, nachos, and Coors/Budlight/MGD/etc. I would say it is probably the opposite of that.

I was dying to try this place because of all the reviews from Yelp!  I finally checked it out last night with a friend.  I knew what I wanted already and ordered the lavender martini - TO DIE FOR!  I fell in love.  It had a very refreshing taste, not over-powering at all with a hint of lavender.  Delicious.  I didn't try any other drinks because my taste buds were clearly rooting for the lavender.

The location may put you off at first but don't let that deter you from coming here.  Dimly lit, unique flair and friendly staff make your stay here enjoyable. Going on a weeknight, it was still fairly busy and I can understand why.  This place is a new favorite of mine.

    ON FIRE, OKAY?

Second of all, the lavender coconut cocktail is still making my mouth water.
Cozy atmosphere, beautifully crafted drinks, and great small plates to nibble on. The sandwich was sub-par, but the charcuterie plate was excellent. I want to live in a vat of that blue cheese hybrid and eat my way out.

We were exploring downtown Tacoma and 1022 South was on my list of recommended places to check out.  It's a charming little cocktail bar with a creative array of cocktails, a generous wine list and a well-rounded menu of bites.  There are a few small tables inside and outside, but we sat at the bar and ordered a couple of glasses of wine as well as the $5 cheese plate.  They have the best wine bar snack food...arrays of nuts, fruit, cheeses.  But they also have salads and sandwiches if you have more of an appetite.  Service was quick and friendly and even though it was our first visit, we felt very welcomed in this neighborhood wine bar.

Wonderful romantic ambience.  Nice relaxing music.  Amazing delicious cocktails!  Superb friendly service!   Their lavendar cocktail is to die for!  Did I mention the best cocktails in Washington state?  Addicted?   You betcha!  Oh and yelp hours are wrong.  They are open Saturday.

The bar tender is an artist! Apothecary Cup is the best - the bartender will make a drink for you based on your likes and what you usually drink.

Service a little slow. It is a cozy, small bar. The happy hour is a decent length - 4-8 p.m. everyday. It is nice to have a happy hour that I can actually get to after work.

How is it possible such a great bar is in Tacoma? Thankfully I know Susan S. or I would never have heard of 1022.

1022 is a pretty small bar and although it definitely has a nice interior it isn't set up as a lounge in the way the top floor of Tavern Law is. It is setup more to allow groups of customers to relax and have great conversations while all being close to the bar.

Which is a good thing because the process that goes into making each drink is almost as spelled out and meticulous as that of Milk & Honey in NYC. Not that this place is a speakeasy, it isn't, nor is it trying to be Milk & Honey. But what it is trying to do is what all great bars must do, care about the quality and consistency of their cocktails.

I had an old fashioned myself and tried a couple of other drinks Susan S. had. All of the drinks were quite good though my old fashioned was a bit on the sweet side. That's fine with me since I like sweet or bitter or a combination of the two. They are happy to modify drinks to fit your taste so don't be afraid to be vocal about what you do and don't like.

A bunch of my friends came into 1022 when we were there. I had no idea they were down in Tacoma or even knew about 1022. All of them love good cocktails and one actually owns two bars in Portland. And when bartenders and other cocktail experts visit a bar you know it's a great place to drink.

Dope cocktails and a great vibe in an otherwise forgettable part of Tacoma. We sat at the bar and struck up conversations with some interesting people. Definitely a plus! I've been hearing about this place for a long time and was finally taken there. Great cocktail menu and a very creative bartender.

You have to try the Corpse Reviver. OMG, sweet, spicy (includes a slice of serrano pepper), and capped with absinthe. Several people were drinking these and they were a hit! For my second choice, I went with a whiskey cocktail off the menu and let the bartender be creative. Always a good call in a high end cocktail bar because these guys can do some great things!

Maybe next time  I'll try some food and upgrade it to 5 stars. You never know, do you?

WOW! Came here last week for a drink on a nice sunny day, and it beat my expectations! Tiny little place with a great vibe and very charming bartender. (And they have a little patio for some drinks in the sun.) Tried the lavender cocktail, and had very high expectations, and it was AH-MAZE-ING!!! Will definately be back with the girls to try out all of the lovely sounding cocktails.

The service is SO SLOW and the staff acts like they could care less if you're there or not. When you do finally get your drinks (we waited almost 30 minutes last night) they're almost all juice and no booze.   This was the second visit to 1022 where it took almost 30 minutes to get a drink.

I do appreciate the menu. It ranges from simple (wine and beer) to complex "apothecary" cocktails infused with herbs.

A cool menu is only useful if you can actually be served. Some advice for the staff:  a simple "we're really slammed right now so it might be a while" goes a long way.

Cocktails are amazing and very extensively listed, but at $10 a piece, definitely on the pricey side.  I loved the atmosphere, it was very intimate.  However, our waitress needed to be a little more proactive.  I had an empty cocktail glass and an empty water glass in front of me for about twenty minutes before I was offered another drink.  While being overlooked could be expected if I was seated with a large group or seated outside, I made eye contact with the waitress numerous times and she walked past my table of just me and another person about once every two minutes.
