This is one of my favorite places to grab breakfast in my area of town. The décor alone is fantastic. When you walk in you feel as if you have walked back into 1972... with oversized burned orange booths and throw back photos of feathered hair, polyester and afros.
The food is always great and comes out fast. I always get the Mikey Fitz. Everything is reasonably priced... a single diner can get out with breakfast and a coffee for $10. This place is open 24/7 so it's also good for after hours dinner and some good people watching. Being connected to the Best Western you see all different walks of life.
Came here on a Friday for lunch. I thought the redone midcentury interior was a nice touch (I love anything midcentury!). I had a tofu and vegetable sandwich with fries. I was expecting warmed/cooked tofu but instead it was like... cold, uncooked smooooshed up tofu on bread. Kind of gross. The fries were amazing. They must make them there. It was a mix of regular and sweet potato, so good.
If I hadn't seen Shirley Manson or there hadn't been a ton of delicious male eye candy, this place would get 3 stars. But yeah, it's cute inside, the service was decent, and there were plenty of attractive men to look at. Sometimes food comes second.
Open late, adjacent parking lot, and gorgeous interior. 9 times outta 10, this is all you need in a diner.
Last night, I also needed a full cup of coffee and an awesome piece of pie for a reasonable price. My coffee cup arrived half-full, my apple pie was decent (and warmed!) but not especially exciting, and my bill came to over 10$.
Solid place to hang and have a conversation but diner lovers - especially from the Northeast - need to keep expectations in check.
This place is one of our favorite late night stops. Close to the apt so it's convenient. The breakfast food is pretty good. The peanut butter milk shake alone gives this place four stars! Service is horrible because they have one server running the floor, cashier, and acting as the floor manager. Not their fault but the place is always understaffed. So order everything you need in one shot. The food is always good and the peanut butter milkshake is tha bomb!
I have eaten here several time and over the past year I have to say this is probably one of the best coffee shops in L.A.
From breakfast to lunch or dinner, the food is consistently very good. Nothing stands out as amazing, but I have never been disappointed. The decor is one of the best things about this place. During the day, the sun shines in but at night it has great low key lighting and mood. The place is nearly 24hrs (7am-3am) so you can drop by some good eats nearly anytime. Close to the 101 fwy in Hollywood, you can park for free in the lot under the sign. Prices are moderate, not expensive, but not cheap cheap. They have some kind of early breakfast special for $5. Plus, their weekday daily lunch/dinner special are quite good. In closing, this is a great place to go with friend or even by yourself to take in a newspaper.
How have I gone this long and NOT written a review for this gem?
101 Cafe ROCKS! You can't pick a better place for late night eats, esp post-debauchery. On the other hand, it's a great hang out, date spot, or whatever else you can name.
One the best highlight of this place is the healthy eating, for meat lovers and VEGETARIANS alike! You can get Soyrizo (veggie Chorizo) and Tofu. I highly recommend the breakfasts, esp the Soyrizo and Eggs or the No Huevos Rancheros (which ironically tastes good WITH eggs). Among other interesting choices, you also have the Portabello Mushroom sandwich, or the Catfish and Eggs. You will be remiss to find catfish as a breakfast item elsewhere, and they do a pretty darn good job. The coffee is also decent, and the killer 70s contemporary chic decor with its pop corn ceilings, speckled tile, and laminate wood counters; all offering up an old school feel alongside Hollywood attitude making the place very sexy in its own right. The dim lighting helps.
If you use this place as a date spot, you have already shown you have a taste for spots that are funky and unique without being ostentatious or pricey. If you are dating a vegetarian, he/she will love you for offering up a spot that caters to their needs. Add in that the help staff is attractive, has a little of that Hollywood attitude I mentioned, but they are helpful, though from time to time you might get forgotten in the mix lol. So you will end up with the total Hollyweird package. For fans of the movie Swingers, this was one of the spots they would goto to discuss their girl problems. If you haven't seen the movie Swingers - ummm what's your problem, homey?
I only give 5 Stars to places I have been to over and over, and have kinda gotten an addiction towards. 101 is definitely one of those spots.
Do bare in mind, that while 101 has parking, it can fill up fast, and parking in the area is at a premium.
Love it. Very 70's like those cool Congress street restaurants in Austin. Big booths, very comfy. An Officer and a Gentleman was written there. I'm just sayin'.
You do have to ask for your refills but they're quick to bring them if you do. Love the mac and cheese. We used to come here for the cheese burgers, but tonight my bf said his was kind of dry - not as good as the last one. The french fried sweet potatoes are awesome and served with half regular fries. I hear they make great shakes and my friend always gets the huevos rancheros, but I never have.
The adjacent hotel lobby and hallway have really cool old photos of the hotel/coffee shop from the 50s, and great old movie star photos and signed posters. Really fun and classy unusual stuff.
Don't worry about going at 8pm on a Saturday. It will be dead. It doesn't start hopping till after the movies and gigs start getting out.
We always find a spot in the parking lot but there's also underground parking.
Love 101. Service can be spotty sometimes but overall, its a great classic diner. Bring a flash light at night, it's dark in there.
Upping the stars for their delicious mac n cheese. Amazing. Kind of like a gourmet version of Kraft Blue Boxed. The cheese is melty like Velvet. It's not like the baked stuff that has hardened cheese and breadcrumbs. This is old school.

This is one of my favorite late night spots. I have been coming here for ages because it is right by the entrance to the 101 Freeway when you are heading home from Hollywood. They take diner food to a new level with delicious twists on old favorites. Try one of their amazing waffles, or the no huevos rancheros... YUM. My favorite thing on the menu, the 50/50 milkshake. Half vanilla, half orange... OMG!
The atmosphere is great, the jukebox is loaded with awesome tunes, and the staff is always pretty good. If you come to have just dessert, I suggest the brownie waffle sundae, it is to die for.
Ever want to go to a Denny's where everyone is cool and the food is actually good? Then 101 Coffee Shop is the place for you.
Very cool patrons and overall vibe. And my order ... well let's just say that I cleaned my plate - LITERALLY.
Smoked Salmon omlette topped with sour cream and caviar.
Sold my friends, and I don't even like breakfast food.
Definately gonna return to check out the other diner faves with a twist.
101 Café
Cool place. Great food. Open real late. Awesome service.
The food is pretty up-to-date (I dig the portabella sandwich with roasted tomatoes and mozzarella), but the restaurant itself is stuck squarely in 70s lounge mode. Dig the rocky walls and round hanging lamps. Dig the old school booths. Check out the short brown coffee cups with white lining.
Recommended: Honey nut shake. It'll drive u nuts, honey.
It's a four star diner, not a four star restaurant, just want to make sure we're clear before rambling about breakfast burritos and fried chicken.
I've dropped in here a couple of times now. So some major kudos... Breakfast any time, check. Fried chicken and mashed potatoes on Thursday, check. Old school coca-cola with vanilla syrup, check. 24 hours, check.
The music is usually on point, the decor is from the fifties but feels cool, the guy that's handling drink service is out of control (saw him pour somehow split-pour four drinks at once), and it's a good mix of people from the celebs not wanting to be noticed to the kids wishing they were celebs wanting to be noticed.
Some menu items are better than others. Stay away from the burger, swap out the grilled green beans that come with the Thursday fried chicken for something else, the rest of the stuff is pretty standard. Can't go wrong with whatever egg creation you desire.
They keep it oldschool and I appreciate that, all they need is some salty old white guy named mac that tells you about old Hollywood tales and how it "aint' the same."
Oh, parking is easy, it's in the base of a hotel so no worries there.
This place rocks! The food is great! Everything on the menu is good! I can order breakfast around dinner time. The look and ambience of the restaurant is nice!
One of my favorite spots. All of the staff is super friendly and is always filled with good peeps. Usually the crew is on point with the coffee which is always a plus.
Tattoos are optional.
The "No Huevos Rancheros" is ridiculous!
Open til 3am, but get there early because the bar crowd fills in quickly.
Love the atmosphere here, the random wall photos are great. Good place to spot celebs.
Great Place open Mon-Sun. 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m
No place to go in a hurry.
Hang out kick your shoe off (well not literally).
One of a well known place to go after wee hour, when everything else is close, don't fret you got a place to go. After parties need more hours to sober up, just to spend more time parting or just more time away from home.
Well I suggest you get here! The ambiance is lax and easy with nice dim lights to woe your worries, nice friendly people to get your order and won't rush you out of the door when the last minute hits. Great tasting coffee and dishes what else do you need? Just don't expect that cost of their item will be cheap and everything is great after all they need to pay for the electric bill.
Came last night and since we had a group of 6 and at that point the gratuity is already included in the bill. Since the waiter already knew he was getting his tip amount, he took our order and never came back to our table. Someone else dropped off our food. We didn't get any refills, no check up to see if we needed anything else. Oh and the burger was soggy and gross. I'll stick to the breakfast and hopefully we get better service next time.
p.s. in the cave booth it was so dim that we could barely see our menus. wtf.

I don't understand the crowds.
I mean I enjoyed Swingers and much as the next guy but damn.
Is there any real reason for the line in the morning?
I stopped in for a simple breakfast. I ordered the huevos rancheros and sadly they were no bueno. A giant pile of the wrong type of salsa with too much sour cream and a weird tasting guacamole on top. Hidden under all of those toppings were a couple of eggs and some black beans that I really couldn't taste. But I'm pretty sure I wasn't missing much anyway. I couldn't even finish it. I didn't want to. And 5 bucks for a small glass of OJ! Are you kidding me?
I don't get it.
I never got this place. Yeah it's open late but the food is mediocre at best. I much rather go to Kitchen 24, Fred's or Norm's. The only reason I even came here is because it was close or friends wanted to meet up here late at night. Parking is usually easy here since they have a lot and there is another lot around the corner.
The place itself looks great but I didn't come here to check out the authentic diner decor, I came here to eat some good diner food. Too bad they don't really have that here.
What the place is good for is people watching. If you want to eat with hipsters, scenesters, and the other "Hollywood" types then your more than welcome to come here and feel apart of the crowd. I much rather not deal with the hassle and go get some food.
First things first, you must order the Honey Nut Shake, add Bananas and your in for a treat. Cafe 101 is just one of those places where anything you order is going to be good. It might not be the best you've ever had, but you will definitely not be sending it back. Its open late and is always a treat for me whenever im in the area. Thursday night is the only night you can order the fried chicken, i suggest trying that as well if given the opportunity. Try it out and you'll find yourself going back time after time.
It's not good...
It's not bad....
I've always had good experiences eating here.
It's an option.
their pancakes kind of suck!! (there, I said it)
and their coffee needs a therapist.
Really? I haven't written a review for this place? Strange.... It's nice having places around town that stay open late where you can just have a decent milkshake, hang out with friends, and wrap up the night. The food here is mediocre. The ambiance is sometimes uncomfortable due to the types of people hanging around there, namely, the pretentious crowd. I am NOT however, clumping everyone together. Every time I have been I have felt differently about this place. One time a server was awful, the next time, lovely. Stick with breakfast items because it's hard to mess up eggs. Isn't it?
This is one of those places that makes me feel out of it, and annoyed. So many fans of 101 on this site. So mediocre for me this Halloween morning. Looking to sponge up some time while I got my car smog-checked (Yay Smog Pros right across the street at the Arco station!), I dropped by here for my second or third visit in 5 years. Entered from the side door, and strode to the front of this dimly lit place that reminded me of a trendy cave. Call me weird, and sober, but if I'm in a coffee shop in the morning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, I want brightness. No hostess apparent, no sign-in, no greeting from anyone and no wait--the place was maybe 2-thirds filled. So I took a table for myself, in one of the only places illuminated enough to read my LA Times. I waited for around 5 minutes, in very plain sight of all employees, while the bus "men" talked to each other, and a waitress or two cooed over a customer's toddlers. Got up and asked busers for a menu. They looked annoyed that I'd interrupted their convo, and reluctantly handed me one. "And some ice water too," I said, wondering if that was too presumptious a request in this place. Ice water didn't come. Around another 3 minutes later, a waitress said to me, "Have you already ordered?" and I said "I haven't even been acknowledged yet." With a brief look of concern on her face--but no apology--she said "You're acknowledged. What can I get you?" Eventually, flapjacks, eggs, bacon, longed-for ice-water and hot chai arrived. I liked: the way the superman-costumed waiter's cape brushed customers as he strode around the place, an acoustic version of "Peace, Love and Understanding" by Elvis Costello on the jukebox, a mother at a neighboring table cautioning her child to use "your inside voice, please!," the interesting mix of customers--bespectacled middle-aged dude with the belly in the rugby shirt and shorts sporting your very colorful calf tatoo--you go guy!--and the amazing newspaper article I read about the high school football coach rendered weak and voiceless by a disease who still coaches and communicates through his wife via a complex code of gestures and facial tics. Made me cry. Oh, and I liked the average bacon and okay fried eggs. I did NOT like the mushy pancakes, the single pat of butter, the awkward heavy squarish chai mug, the cacophony of noise bouncing off the walls, the lack of a water refill or any service followup for, like, 30 minutes, and the fact that the place made me focus on all its shortcomings--for $11.95 plus tip-- instead of offering a nice friendly effortless meal like you can get from a hundred other L.A. coffee shops.
But my morning misstep was worth it because 1/2 block East on Franklin, on the way back to the service station I finally went into the tiny jewel called Pygmy Pinscher--a teensy atelier and antique furniture/curio shop owned by a lovely artist named Allen who was WELCOMING (hallelujah--someone in town still gets the value of that), offered me some Halloween Junior Mints, told me the story of his now-in-doggy-heaven pinscher's regal Czech moniker, and was in general a cultured, sweet man out of time and place who restored for the moment my faith in my goofy hometown of Hollywood.
the food is pretty damn good - i like the diner staples here like grilled cheeses, omelets, milkshakes and anything fried.
That said, this place can become a little too scenester and you'll wait for a table most late nights (it's a zoo on the weekends) - but if that's your thing, you'll dig it.
Also a great breakfast/brunch joint
My friends and I are hungry. Really hungry. We want some good, filling American food. But it's late, really late, and we're in the middle of LA, lost, hopeless, and alone. And hungry. Where on earth can we go that's still open and will satisfy three drunk omnivores and a vegan with the munchies?
Oh yeah, 101 Coffee Shop.
Finally there's a place where I can get coffee and diner-style vegan food in the middle of the night. The no-huevos rancheros were exactly what I needed that night, and I'll definitely be returning the next time I'm feeling similarly unfulfilled and in need of some good ol' fashioned american dream on a plate.
Loses points for service.
70's-style diner. I feel like I've stepped back in time, and that's nice.
For $10, I got dry scrambled eggs, dry bacon, toast, and hashbrowns. The hashbrowns were okay--flavored with pepper and sour cream. For $5.95 at Denny's, I can get the same items plus pancakes and oatmeal! I was hoping the food would taste more expensive, but no, it was just overpriced and way overrated. I paid an extra $3.50 to add the buttermilk pancakes on the side. Thank goodness those were tasty, or I would have marked this down to a 1-star.
It took a few minutes for someone to tell us to seat ourselves. Another ten minutes for someone to ask if we wanted coffee, and several more for another waitress to come and ask if we needed coffee. ARgh! Horrible! The waitress checked on us once, and it was exceptionally difficult to flag her down just to ask for water.
Not my place.
What feels like a drop back to the 1950s (excluding the 1970's/1980's photos on the wall) Cafe 101 is a dimly lit throw back, hole in the wall, Dick Tracy, Pulp Fiction, Hollywood coffee shop place to go.
But just cause it's like this doesn't mean that it's not for everyone 'casue when I went there were Australians, Punkers, Loners, and Bar rejects; which I think add to the uniqueness of this place.
They had a tasty smoked salmon scramble with caviar for $9.95, it was very tasty, and the burgers looked good as well.
A definite place to go to late night stop if I'm in East Hollywood/Silverlake area.
Enjoy a cup of coffee and the ambiance of Cafe 101 (101 Coffee Shop).
Our last breakfast during our SoCal trip, and someone suggested we go to Michael Moore's coffee shop. They said he's one of the owners. The teen with me was hoping we'd see some celebrities, esp Fairuza Balk who we knew lived right around the corner. Well, no luck with the celeb sightings, but we did have a great breakfast of soyrizo & eggs, the 101 salad (had tons of healthy goodness) and two double-capps. We had great service, great food, and were very amused by the other clientele... very Hollywood. :) We both wish we knew about it earlier, and we would have gone more than once.
101 is a perfect example of Woody Allen's opening joke in Annie Hall. The food isn't good, yet the portions are too small. Steaks are less than half the size they used to be. My mistake for ordering steak here. It's not even that tasty.
Many celebs swing by. I've seen Sofia Coppola and Dominic Monaghan, to name a couple. Consequently, lots of Hollywood hopefuls sit around reading and writing scripts by their lonesome selves. 101 is overrated. Plus 1 star for being open late. Again, though I don't enjoy the food here, I appreciate that it's an option at 2 in the morning.
Do I have a thing about liking girls that don't return the feeling or do I simply fall victim to the taken lady too much? Either way that makes me a backdoor man. The men don't know what the little girl understand. But the man knows about hunger, especially yours truly and after seeing Watchman (the best piece of borrowed nostalgia from the 80's yet) on IMAX I was fucking starving.
The voices of L.A. girls echo like a harpsichord around me: "I'm so cold!" they chant. HA! You don't know what cold is; you just do as your told. Girls don't matter tonight. The three musketeers ventured for a late-night meal Hollywood style to discuss topics of merit especially the historical fiction magnificence that was Watchmen.
and they're on the 101 freeway. Eureka!
Café 101 on Franklin for tuna melts, fettuccine alfredo and of course those scrumpdidlyumptious malts, shakes and smoothies. This time I ventured for the honey'n'nutz & peanut butter milkshake which was quite simply, nuts.
The Beautiful People are all around me as I babble on about various theories my friend's flatter me they are interested in. A few tables apart from us sits a purple haired diva, who arrived @ 101 with an upscale hip group. Taking a break from her Nylon Mag shoot, only to order a salad. At least she's eating. When she goes back to her tra-la-la world I can't help but asking our waitress:
"What does it mean when a girl dyes her hair vibrant colors such as orange, pink or purple?"
She isn't a typical LA dufus, our cute yet book smart waitress, in fact she provides the perfect answer:
"Well, some girls may be going through a transformation. Hmm...it could be something they do right after a breakup, it could be a desire to try out the bisexual thing..."
"you mean lyke, 'I kissed a girl and I liked it' bizness?"
"Sure, or it could be a fashion thing, a sign of expression but you know, some girls are just flat out crazy."
Thinking he was clever, my friend paints the tip six dollars and sixty-six cents. Back in the car, Beck's 'Mutations' surrounds us. Nobody's Fault But My Own. The ride comes to a close. My friends laugh about Dr. Manhattan's elongated IMAX schlong and this time, I laugh too.
"Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone."
"I've been looking for a god time, but the pleasures are seldom and few," piques a young Beck. No song could better describe my mood, as tonight was one of those seldom pleasures I experienced in Hollywood's 'The 101'.

This place is great for some late night snacks. They're open super late, and the food is pretty good. My main reason for going there is for the milkshakes; the Purple Haze is TO DIE for. I dream about them. If I'm hungry enough, I'll usually order the mac and cheese, which can be really good (as long as they bake it all the way through, sometimes it can turn out a little cold and I have to send it back). I also love the 70's family photos they have on the wall. I could spend hours looking at those!
I deducted a star because depending on the server, the service can be lacking. The only time I've had a really bad experience was with a male server, who constantly forgot anything we told him, and then took 30-40 minutes just to bring us our check. Besides that one time, the service is usually decent enough. The parking can be an issue on the weekends, but most of the time we can find a spot.
Oh hell yeah, I love this diner. Five stars for the authentic "diner" experience that I haven't found elsewhere outside of Long Island, plus it's got its own Hollywood edge.
Your eggs might be cooked a little differently than how you ordered them and it's not cheap. But what a great memory and a fun place to go out after a late night out! Extra points for the Flintstones-esque stone wall inside, and fun for big groups.
Low prices in a diner that looks like it hasn't changed much since the first day it opened. Unfortunately if you're looking for a quiet place to sit and eat, this is not it. This place has become quite the hangout and has become arduous to find a place to sit. When you do sit, you are seated amongst hipsters with 5 o'clock shadows, long haired angsty musicians, eclectic pink haired artists..., not to mention the waitresses, some tattooed heavily, some in pigtails with an obvious addiction to different colored pens all clipped on to the front of her apron. For cheap eats, they offer a grilled cheese w/tomato for about $5 or other full fledged plates for a little more. A little higher in quality than chipped beef, the food is a winner. If you're afraid of an assassination attempt, sit at the counter, there is a mirror above you that will aid you in watching your own back.
It's all about the Mac n Cheese baby! The best in town which is really weird considering this place is in a best western. They also have an incredible turkey burger here. Try the vanilla coke as well, nice filling food late night at great prices.
The food is always pretty good and the price keeps us coming back.
Sometimes you'll see a z-lister or two, like that Bam guy or Johnny Knoxville.
Sergio and I got directions from his sissy for this sweet little coffee shop, we headed there after getting my medical marijuana card, I'm glad we found it! located in the best western hotel we parked in the back lot so we could walk through the lobby and see all the stars whom had graced the halls, Barbara s. had a check on the wall for 11,000.00 so guess she stayed awhile. well it is located across the street from capital records.
it has a nice jukebox and it looks like the original 50 tone kept alive.
i had an Ice-T of course with a salad and grill cheese on sour dough...comfort food and usually perfect in a diner. i was happy.
Serg got a cheeseburger and salad, w/ a New Castle..
good times!
The 101 Coffee Shop is like your ex-boyfriend that you can't stop shagging even when you want to, you're not sure that it's love, but you can't be certain that it's not.
The mushroom taquitos, the chai lattes, the salmon scrambled eggs, with creme fraiche topped with caviar. It's all a party in my mouth. More than anything it has a good feeling about it. There's always a good song playing on the juke box, a cute waiter or waitress for eye candy.
Sometimes there are too many tragic hipsters with bad hair, there are sometimes strange hippies at the counter who don't shave their underarms but that has relatively nothing to do with the taste of the food.
Downside:
Strange stuff in jars on the counter, when I asked what it was, the server told me it was chocolate pig in a jar. I almost puked in my chicken barley soup.
I have been here 3 times. Twice as the end cap to a boys night out in LA (1:30 Am) and then again with my wife after the Garth Brooks concert last year.
Each time I have gone, I have ordered the Hash Browns and 2 eggs. The hash browns are delish. Like fried mashed potatoes, very different, but oh so tasty.
One thing that sells a place to me is the interior. Perhaps because I wish I was born in the 20's or something. But the inside of this place screams 40/50's era diner. The rocks, the wood paneling, the googie lights. Check out the pix in the lobby to the best Western too. See who has stayed at this Hotel and who used to hang out in this diner.
When I was there with my wife, we met Jamie Kennedy, he was cool.
This is a good place to sober up before the long drive back to the OC or wherever you came from. Parking is crammed so be prepared for that.
Not the place for a quiet meal late night. Noisy, dark and an atmosphere that's a cross between nightclub and coffee house. I am neither young nor hip and felt out of place and unwanted. The host's indifference was evident in his barely making eye contact. The waitress wedges herself in the other side of the booth and just looks at me without any concern that I actually might not be ready to order. It was basically, "Whaddya want?" I walked out. Yuck.
