Small and cute little grocery. Friendly. Cheap soda and water prices... in fact, what convenience store anywhere can you get a bottle of water or a can of coke for under a dollar? Like, no where dude. So if you are jonesing for something to quench your never-ending thirst, cruise on over to 1001 Castro!

so i went in here on feb.24 to get hooked up with some beers and one of the guys (it's basically a pair of chaps who run the place) is all like "oh, so you're watching the oscars tonight!" and i was like...hmm.... actually the california speedway nascar race was postponed till tonight so i'm totally watching that..but would that look cool?? ah who cares..so i mutter "uh, naw, nascar race is on" and i could tell for a sec he was like.. "i see." and i pretty much realized you keep your mouth shut about that kind of thing on castro street. but it's cool i think mostly he was laughin about it
this place is just around the block from my house (and it's straight uphill, i think a 15-18% grade is a conservative estimate i'm gonna call it more like 40.) so i go there a lot, or when i'm like gettin off the 24 to head home
they have a decent beer selection, nothin too gourmet but with like some anchor steam and a few weird things like some kind of strange malt beverages and a pretty good pear cyder that i don't really see many other places. liquor selection is standard (fanciest it gets is like maker's or whatever), but that's cool, if you want something special 24th street has a number of good places, and sometimes you just need that 5th of jack to match with some pop. they have some really good 'boylan' cola that is hella tasty.
i grew up on stouffer's frozen entrees, it was not until i was like in middle school before i realized that probably 1/3 of my mom's home cooking was that stuff, but whatever, it's not bad as far as a tv dinner goes and their selection rivals bell market's even.
prices are maybe a little higher than you'd pay down on 24 but when you're feelin lazy about going out of your way, or in a hurry, well you can weigh the choice if you wanna save 50 cents or whatever.
as a bonus, the view while you're walkin out of this joint down castro towards the south is lovely! anyway that's my review where i tried to start it with a silly and barely relevant anecdote, cheers.
Between my laziness, propensity for accidents and half-assed immunity system it's a small miracle that I'm not a recipient of Meals-On-Wheels. If I had more disposable income, Kozmo.com would still be in business. Since my friends are either unable or (more likely) unwilling to bring me movies and Cheetos when I'm "indisposed", 1001 Castro Market fills the void.
It's only 2 blocks from my house, but more importantly, the entire route is flat! This is a small miracle as most businesses are a long 15-18% grade hill from my apartment. I don't do hills when I'm hung over, er, have the flu.
1001 is pretty much a standard corner store. The focus is primarily on junk food and drinks. They do have a nice wine selection and they carry every flavor of Vitamin Water (helpful for hangovers, I mean, the flu) and Izze Soda. There's spaghetti, canned soup, mac and cheese, peanut butter, etc., all of which can be a bit dusty. They also rent out a small selection of movies for people like me who have yet to drink the Netflix koolaid. The Ben & Jerry's selection is seriously one of the best in the City --- which is a point of pride for the owners. Oh, and dog owners/parents/guardians --- they keep treats behind the counter for your faithful companion waiting for you outside.
What I really appreciate, and what distinguishes them from other corner stores, is that if you have a special request, they definitely do their best to accommodate. I'd developed a favorite B& J flavor and it disappeared from the freezer case. When I asked about it, they wrote down the name and promised to try and get it. When I returned a few days later, viola! there it was.
It's almost enough to cure a girl's malaise --- almost.
