I'm not from Houston, but was in town visiting my brother for the weekend. As I always do, I hit up yelp for some of the local nearby hot spots. I asked my brother if he'd ever eaten at 100% Taquito, and of course he responded with "I never heard of it."

We showed up around 4:00pm on a Saturday evening. Upon entering, my attenion was immediately given to the massive "chele-rita." Thats a large frozen lime margarita with your choice of a meixcan bottle of beer inside of it.

And just when I thought things couldn't get any better after sitting down with my chele-rita, out comes my order of sizzling hot freshly cooked chicharrons. And for those of you who missed out as a kid, those are pork skins, aka "pork rinds."

The tacos although very small were decent. But, definitely not the star of the show at this place. Between the drinks, desserts, and the chicharrons, there is no doubt this place is a must visit for me every time Im in Houston!

The Horchata here is my ultimate favorite! It's a must try.  Their food is good, too. I usually order their fajita de pollo gorditas with the works, topped with cilantro and chopped onions. The guac is fresh!

The set up is nice (ties into their roots), good latin music is always playing on their flat screens and of course they have a variety of drinks for us futbol/soccer fans who like to watch in groups while having a cold one.

I was told this place serves up a taco truck menu in an indoor setting and it's pretty much right on.  There is a VW bug taxi cab parked inside, but overall, it has the ambiance of a middle school cafeteria, but the food definitely makes up for it.

First I ordered the taco sampler, which had one asada, one tinga (braised shredded beef), and one chicken in mole sauce.  I had chopped onions and cilantro on all three.  I like the chicken one the best, it was flavorful and tender.  The tinga was flavorful, but took a bit of chewing to break down the stringy beef.  The asada was awfully dry, so I added salsa and guacamole to make it palatable.  Next time I would just order chicken mole.  The tacos don't come with chips, which I was a bit bummed about.

I saw several nearby tables holding an interesting side item known as chicharrónes or pork rinds.  But to be honest, calling them pork rinds brings into mind of those bags of styrofoam like nasty things in convenience stores.  These however, are freshly fried (they were crackling and sizzling as I carried them to the table) and served with salsa and guacamole.  Sooooo good on the tongue (probably not so good on the hips), but oh well, it was well worth it.  I think it was $4.79 for an order with salsa and guacamole.

I also had a horchata (a sweet drink made from rice), which was smooth and no residuey stuff on the bottom which is always a plus.  It wasn't too overly cinnamon flavored either.  Unfortunately, it does not come with refills like the sodas and ice teas.  Overall, I will be back if I'm hankering for a street style taco and don't feel like cruising the streets looking for taco trucks.

PS  If you order a quesadilla there, it's not the kind you get at Taco Bell.  It's practically the same thing as a taco, except it has some cheese melted on it before they add the meat and toppings.

    I'm giving it a 4 because I'm rounding up from 3.5.

It's good if you can't get to Tacos Tierra Caliente and need a taco fix. The atmosphere is cool, the food is pretty decent. I do really like their corn tortillas. Their tacos el pastor are good. If I were to go again. which I likely will, I'd get a sopa, seeing that their tortillas are the best part.

    This place is IT!

Love the environment. I don't think I've eaten better Mexican food anywhere else! I always order chicharones to start. With avocado and salsa of course. Served warm and cracklin'. MMM. And the tacos. Gosh, they're amazing. The history of the place is pretty interesting if you have a chance to read about it on their website. Will always be back for more!

Man, this the real deal right here!

If you want some good authentic Mexican food, then check this place out. I'm known for getting their chicken mole quesadillas...on corn tortillas. Their garlic shrimp tacos are also very good. Their messy, sloppy, and just great to eat. Enjoy getting your hands dirty throwing a 3-pack of these down.

However, the sleeper item on the menu--the unsung hero--is the chicharrónes!
I grew up on those crappy bags of pork skins, so I was apprehensive to try these, but it's definitely worth (since they're made fresh).

Anyway, order the chicharrónes with 1/2 salsa & 1/2 guacamole. Oh yeah, remember to squeeze a little bit of lime juice in the guac (a little tang is always good...and yes, that's what she said). So, in order to get the full experience, dip a chicharrón strip in the salsa and let it sit for a couple of seconds while you enjoy the crackling sound. OK, eat that one, and then get another strip and dip it in the guacamole. Continue by enjoying that one as well.

They're margaritas were crap today, but they're usually decent. Just remember, you're here for the food.

You can thank me later :-)

Came here with a good friend, and a friend of the good friend, who recommended this place. And I can see why! Loved the "taco truck." And the Quesadillas with Tinga were excellent and delicious! The guac was fresh and also very good. The margaritas were also delicious, and the prices were actually reasonable for food in this neighborhood of Houston.

Probably the best tacos in the Houston area that I know of. Environment is friendly and it is as authentic as you can get to Mexican food. The 3 small tacos that come in an order are probably the only complaint.

This place is legit Mexican (not Tex-Mex), and it's DELICIOUS! We've passed by here 4719871928321 times before and finally decided to check it out on a hungover morning. What a great call.

The food was all very fresh, very authentic and made very quickly. We got chicken mole tacos, pork and pineapple quesadilla (the real ones are actually more like tacos...), and I guacamole tostadas. Everything was delicious, and the provided salsa brought out all the flavors even more. Oh, and they were showing the Euro Cup for good measure.

Definitely check this place out if you're looking for a casual, cheap, delicious and AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant. Going back fo sho.

I heard about this place through Yelp. Having read most of positive reviews I decided to give em a try. I drove from Katy just to try and see what all the rave was about. Place was easy to find thanks to the huge billboard pointing to the restaurant. The restaurant itself is nicely themed as a mexican barrio. Now to the food, here is where I have an issue. The portions are very small and priced high for the amount they serve. Although considering the area and the Bentley and BMW and Mercedes parked outside.  I should have expected the prices  to be higher then a typical mexican taco place. Food was great service was good just the portions are way too small and priced too high.

Hand made tortillas! Hand made sopes shell! Ooooh my! This is the REAL "antojitos mexicanos" ( mexican street food ). Definetively tasty and authentic.

A great place to grab a quick tasty inexpensive bite.

WARNING! - Eating at the patio is YUCKY!, there is pigeon poop all over the top and the bottom of the windows and on the trash dispensers as well.

I have been going to this place since back in the 90s when they used to have a truck in the parking lot of the walmart. I actually went to school with the owner and that's how I found out about it.

Their tacos al pastor with pineapple are the best. Banderillas (Flautas with 3 sauces) are awesome. It is not a cheap place for being a mexican restaurant, but the quality does separate them from any other place...

It is "street" food, and inside it is meant to make you feel as if you were in Mexico City eating right on the street with its decor (minus the pollution)

The Tres Leches is right at the top of the best ones I have tried along with Pappasitos...

Super tasty, quick, inexpensive, and fun -- what more could you want!

Love the tacos al pastor -- the sopes are also good, but the tacos are my favorite. They aren't huge, but an order of tacos (3 to an order) plus splitting guacamole or salsa with chips with a friend is more than enough for lunch.

It's no frills, and mostly serve yourself -- they hand you a buzzer and you pick up your food when it's ready (usually super quickly) from a window to the left of the registers.

Don't be like me and forget to get silverware every time because you're too distracted scooping up tomatillo salsa from the salsa bar!

Question of the century: how are they so cheap yet sooo good?
I don't know how authentically Mexican the food is, but I've enjoyed everything I've tried here. I love the "quesadillas" which are really 3 soft shell tacos with onions and cilantro. It's the perfect serving size (for me). The restaurant is clean, and the staff is welcoming and professional. They always have fútbol or Latin American music videos (whichever suits your fancy) on the TVs.
Best part is you can get a nutritiously balanced (if you load enough pico de gallo on for veggies) for under $5.

I know a lot of people are raving about this place's authenticity and pricing, but it's just not for me.  Some times things taste funny, some times they don't taste like anything.  Portions are tiny and prices are only "cheap" compared to other restaurant's single portions... 100% Taquito's portions are about 1/3-1/4th the norm.

Pork rinds are neat as they come out still crackling.  Salsa and guac are good.

I  needed to reenergize after a trip to  Costco, and tacos seemed like the perfect solution.  The ads for 100% Taquito had been cheesy, but memorable, so I decided to check the place out. The interior cracked me up.  There's a Mexican taxicab, the place where you order has been made to look like a taco truck, and the kitchen area has a facade to look like part of a Mexican village. I think kids would love it.  The spacious dining area features high and low tables and lot of windows--again, good for families.

As for the food-- I ordered 3 tacos (beef asada, pork tinga, and chicken mole) for about $4, and they were delicious! I don't know if it was "authentic" but lots of families speaking Spanish seemed to be enjoying their meals, so take that for what it's worth. The tinga burned my mouth a bit, but that's nothing to really complain about.  :)  I'd never tried mole before, and wasn't sure what to expect, but the taco was wonderful.  Tender meat in a bitter/hot/slighly tangy sauce topped with onions and cilantro a corn tortilla--perfect!  If you're in the area and want a taco, 100% Taquito offers a good value and high quality. This is definitely a local business I will support.

100% Taquitos tacos would be the perfect drunk food, but it's not opened late.  It is a solid authentic fresh hot tacos joint.

I like the set up.  They have a vintage volkswagon with a mexican inside!  Not feeling the sticky floors.  Sticky floors will always cost a restaurant a star.

One order of tacos (~$5) comes with 3 tacos.  Don't expect large tortillas, these tacos are tapas size.  Still pretty cheap though.  Heard the Banderillas is pretty good.

Conclusion: Great spot for if you have kids.  Easy parking.  Cheap fresh tacos (don't waste your money on the other menu items though).

    See below for supplemental info:
    - Price: Below average
    - Atmosphere: 5/5 stars
    - Service: Self serve

    Big turnoffs:
    - Sticky floors. Traaash....

With a name like this and a location like this what are you to expect?

I have been in this strip center a many times and always saw this giant sign but never thought to try it.  I saw some recent reviews from some people I trust and they were kind of all over the place a couple of 5s, some 4s, and even so lower.

I had to put the taco to the test.

I was warned that they are small and knowing my giant appetite I was prepared.  I had one order of the Tacos el pastor, this was my first time having this pork taco with pineapples, I like the concept, I think another taco stand might execute it better though...I also ordered the sampler to get a good variety of their other tacos: the asada (beef), tinga brisket, and mole chicken.  I had all of the tacos on corn.  Honestly, all just OK, nothing that blew me out of the water.

This place also claims to have the best tres leches in town.  I added in one of these for dessert.  Now this is where it's at.  Their serving of tres leches is one giant slice of cake.  It was great, moist and sweet.  But still not good enough to pull up mediocre tacos to a 4 star.

Overall, this place has a cool setting, with literally having cars inside, it's open somewhat late, has many tables, and delivery of food is fast, just nothing mind blowing.

I wasn't sure what to feel when I walked into this place. I expected a typical tex-mex restaurant (somewhat like Ninfas except classier due to the area), but apparently that's exactly what this place didn't want to be. It was initially a school project - started as a truck, and then moved into an actual restaurant but still wanted to reflect the atmosphere of the streets of Mexico. Which I guess it did a fairly good job in.. felt like a Fuddruckers with a Mexican twist?

Anyway, on to the food. One of the few places in the area where you'll find pretty authentic Mexican food - none of that Tex-Mex shenanigans (which I love, btw, don't get me wrong). Tacos are small on a flour or corn tortilla, not basted with cheese or any of that. Just simple - meat, cilantro, onions, and your  choice of hot sauce. Menu is pretty big and has a lot to choose from, and for a pretty decent price. Good place to come for some good authentic tacos when you're sick of the tex-mex!

The name and the strip mall setting doesn't do 100% Taquito any favors.

That said, they have the best street tacos I've had in Houston. Very authentic like buying them off the street in Mexico. Loved the Banderillas and the Tacos al Pastor. Also the straight up Asada tacos are also great.

Advertised as the best tres leches in town... I'd have to disagree. Still good though...

i had seen this place tons of times, since it's right around the corner from my house, but the cheesy name deterred me from checking it out in the past.  however, my mexican friend says that the food here is very authentic, and that if you go to mexico, the food will taste just like it does at 100% taquito.  the ordering counter is decorated to look like a taco truck, and there is a vw bug taxi inside.  i guess it's supposed to look like a plaza or something.  they were blasting some mexican house music, and one of the songs kept dropping the f bomb.  dude, mixed crowd...  bring a pair of earmuffs for the kids and for your grandma.

i got the sopes de pollo con mole, which was excellent with the salsa verde.  my friend got the sopes de tinga (spicy chipotle brisket) and the maiz en vasito (corn in a cup), which is bomb with lime, spicy sauce, and salt.  i also had the mango dulce, which is a mango smoothie with leche and carmel.  next time i'll try the mango smoothie with spicy powder (sounds yum!).  they claim to have the best tres leches cake in houston, but had run out.  i'll have to verify this next time as well.  the staff was very friendly, and served us with a smile, even though we came 10 mins before closing time.  they also stay open fairly late (usually 10 or 11p) for all you night owls.

Like other people have mentioned, the name is a little ridiculous and doesn't do the restaurant any justice.

However, my experience with this place more than made up for it. I've been coming here for quite some time and have tried lots of different stuff, but I always go back to the tortilla soup or tinga sopes. Never both at the same time (I couldn't possibly finish all of it). I can't speak on the size of the tacos, but with my drink and sopes, I'm almost too stuffed to walk after I walk out. The tinga there is fantastic.

Granted, this is one of those places that doesn't lavish you with attention, or even really give you the impression that they care if you're there, but I think this is just part of what you should expect at a place that you can get out of for $6. It's not a steakhouse, you know?

Overall, I love this place, and it would take either a natural disaster or some kind of health inspection shutdown to keep me away.

This is the best place to get MEXICAN (again, not Tex-Mex) food in the inner loop.

I had to drag my fiance here at first (he is from Mexico and was very off put by the name 100% taquito and the strip mall location). But then he loved it and agreed that there is no better place to get real Mexican tacos in Houston.

As people have mentioned, the tacos are tiny, so you may need more than one order if you're super hungry. I love the al pastor and carne asada tacos, and I DIE FOR the molletes. If you haven't tried molletes, you are living a dull and meaningless life- toasted, crusty french bread topped with delicious black beans and melty queso de chihuahua- HEAVEN, I tell you! For desert, they have bunuelos (crispy fried dough topped with cinnamon, sugar, and dulce de leche), tres leches cake, dulce de mango, and flan. I usually go with the bunuelos.

In addition to the tasty taco truck cuisine, they have a variety of mexican imported drinks (Mexican coke, jarritos, sangria senorial, etc) and alcoholic beverages. This is a great place to come to celebrate Mexican holidays or if you're feeling nostalgic for the kitschyness of Mexico. They always have Mexican music videos or futbol on TV, and the decor is hilarious- I mean, a dog labeled Salinas, how can you beat that?

Anyway, my Mexican fiance and I love this place, and you should, too!

N.B. Free chips and salsa is an entirely American concept- this is a Mexican joint and if you want any type of botanas (chips, guac, chicharrones, etc), you have to buy them separately!

The meat was a little dry that I had put some salsa in it. Their tacos are cheap but it wasn't so good. My bf had the chicken quesadillas and basically its the tacos with cheese in it. It wasn't like the common quesadillas that you see everywhere. The whole experience was decent.

I normally get Tacos al Pastor. They are a deliciously flavored pork, pineapple with cilantro and onions on top. I also recommend sharing a guacamole with a dining companion. It is super fresh and delicious.

I hear the tostadas are amazing. Can't wait to try them!

After today's "best taqueria" talk thread sparked a taco craving, I met up with Yelp superstar Danielle S for an impromptu lunch.

I had my usual:  2 orders of the Tacos Al Pastor with pineapple, onions, and cilantro (three to an order).  As usual, they were delicious and Danielle got to witness my scarfing prowess in living color.

The reason for the star demotion?  The prices went up from the prior $2.99 per order to $3.69 per order, which translates to a 35% increase.  Granted, its 70 cents per order but we are in a tough economy, tending towards deflationary pressures, and with commodity prices in check.  (I love economics, by the way.)

So, I have to ding them a half-star and I'm keeping the other half star in reserve.  Much like the banks and the TARP money.

It was my co-worker's birthday, so a few of us stuffed into a couple cars and headed down westpark.  I had always seen signs for 100% Taquito, but I had never had a chance to go.

I have to say, this place was nothing like I had expected. I had assumed that I was going to go to a regular counter-service taqueria. No Senor. The place is decorated like you are eating at a legit taco stand in Mexico City. Once inside you are looking straight at a facade of a taco stand. it honestly looks like it was there from a long time ago and they built the rest of the strip mall around it.

Now to the food. I decided to get the sopes. When I went to the counter I ordered in Spanish, I decided to try out what I had learned. I got the order right, and added rice and beans, and even asked her for no cheese on the sopes. Win.

So ya, now that I am done gloating that I can speak food-Spanish, the food was absolutely excellent, and incredibly cheap. The tortillas for the sopes were nice and puffy, the meat was well seasoned and tender, and the other fixings (cilantro, lime, onions etc) were fresh.  Also, the salsas they have to go with everything are really good, spicy yet not so much that they ruin the flavor.

Honestly, it is funny to rave so much about a $6 meal, but honestly, with the decor and the value food, this place is a top spot.

I have heard everyone tell me to check out 100% Taquito. I think now it is because they don't like me.

Dismal strip mall setting dressed up with paper mache decor and a CD to serve steamtable food in an atmosphere that makes Luby's seem like a customer friendly and forward environment.  Order the chips and salsa and be prepared to pay.  In Houston.  Simply a disqualifier for a Mexican restaurant here.  Order some of the beef and pork dishes and know they have been prepared for hours - or days - before you get them, leaving them greasy, flat-tasting and dull.

And be prepared to interrupt the social life of the navel-ring wearing, artificial-nail showing, cell phone using 15 year old bevy of girls who view your wants/needs/patronage as some kind of destruction of their personal well-being.

    Epic bad service
+Food that does not taste of anything special
    +Hokey atmosphere

With so many good - even marginal - Mexican restaurants in Houston, there is no reason to waste time eating at this one.

My buddy Tommy P and I have been planning to scope this place out after reading such great reviews about their yummy--and cheap--tacos.

I have to say that they were good, but not great. The meat was a tad bit dry so I had to drench it in lime and salsa. (If I come back, I'm gonna try the tinga or maybe some sopes.) I'm a fan of their warm red salsa and toasty chips. The interior is the typical fun, festive decor (I kinda want to hop in the Beetle and take a picture with those mannequins. They look like a fun group.).

Kudos to the doc and nurse I saw downing Coronas with their lunch. I only hope they weren't headed back to work.

The recent "best taquerias" thread on Yelp Houston prompted Edgar V. and I to catch lunch at 100% Taquito, since I'd never been.  I'd heard some pretty decent buzz on Yelp about it, so I was game to try it.  Plus, tacos sounded so much better than the Subway sandwich I'd been contemplating earlier in the day.  Healthy shmealthy.

I headed into 100% Taquito a little bit past 12:30, and the parking lot was packed.  I had to park waaayyy down the row thanks to the myriad of cars parked for this place and the surrounding businesses, but a little jog never hurt anyone.  Once inside, I was confronted by the over-the-top decor, which includes trompe l'oeil murals of Mexico City street scenes and two VW Bugs done up like Mexican taxis.

Despite its name, everything on the menu does not, in fact, consist of taquitos (also called flautas).  Tacos are ordered in sets of three, and I decided to go basic and ordered three tacos de camaron (shrimp) in corn tortillas.  They asked me if I wanted cilantro and onions, and I declined, wanting to protect my coworkers' well being once I returned to the office.  Once my order came up...I was stunned.  I was given three tiny tacos with a few naked shrimp laid bare in their corn hideaways.  No lettuce, no tomato, no cheese, no NOTHIN'?  I did snag some salsa from the salsa bar, and it added a little bit of kick to my taco...but it tasted suspiciously like the salsa roja from Taco C.  To be fair, the shrimp were on their own very tasty--grilled, seasoned and succulent.  But they could've definitely included more of them.

Since I was pretty much done with my tacos instantaneously due to their small size, I picked up some pechuga de pollo (chicken breast) tacos in addition to soothe my hungry tummy.  These were stuffed with shredded chicken and somewhat made up for the measly shrimp I'd consumed before.  Still...nothing too special.  Considering the shrimp tacos was $5 and change, and the chicken were nearly as much, it starts adding up quickly.

With the staff walking around with shirts proclaiming that their restauarant served the best tres leches cake in Houston, I knew I had to go on a fact-finding mission and try it (for strictly academic purposes, of course).  I got a slice, which was massive, and it was very good.  The best in Houston?  I don't know if I would say that, but it was creamy, soft and delectably moist--a fine example of its kind.

Overall, 100% Taquito failed to win me over 100%.  I vascillated between three and four stars for my experience, and three seems to fit better because of the steep price.  There are tons of hole-in-the-wall taco places where I'd rather get my fix.  The food has an air of authenticity about it, but the prices are definitely all-American.  Best tacos in Houston?  I'd say 100 percent NO.

I've been wanting to go here ever since I read "Fearless Critic" (which by the way you need to get if you live (and eat) in Houston).  They gave it one of the highest ratings (A) amongst all the restaurants they secretly reviewed in Houston so it's been on my list for a while.  I was intrigued that a simple walk up counter service taco stand rated as high as top end restaurants like Da Marco and T'afia.

Some of my most memorable meals have come from street food vendors in cities like Frankfurt, Tokyo, Seoul and Mexico City.  I've always loved the simple al pastor tacos I've eaten on the streets of Mexico and 100% Taquito comes pretty darn close to those.

I came here strictly for the tacos so I didn't try much else besides a small bowl of tortilla soup (which was pretty good too).  The tacos come served 3 to an order.  I had mine in corn tortillas with onions and cilantro just liked you'd get at a taco cart, then added my own condiments at their condiment bar.  It was simple and perfect!

The place sits in a giant strip mall, but what doesn't in Houston.  The signs and interior may be tacky to some but I kinda got a kick out of seeing an authentic vw bug taxicab from Mexico parked inside the restaurant.

Good cheap eats!  Fearless Critic was right about this one.

100% good!  Again, its very hard for me to give out 5 stars unless it just WOW's! me.  Their set up is kinda neat.  When you enter the building its like entering the corner of a busy street with many vendors selling food and drinks.  They sell taco truck style foods but with many more selections to choose from.

I I I lovveeee me some taquitos and flautas.  Its cheap and fast.  its GOOD!
