10 Degrees South was never that appealing to me. Driving by, it was in a random location, the building looked more like an office park and I had no clue what South African cuisine was. I probably never would have tried it out, and I would have been missing out.
A few years ago, a friend had a birthday get together there where I was able to sample a few apps and was surprised and impressed. Recently I decided to head back for a full meal experience.
While the exterior of the building is nothing special, the interior still has a very homey, but upscale feel. Not overdone with safari decorations, but simple, if understated pieces that reflect the theme of the restaurant.
Service was pleasant, attentive and spot on.
We skipped apps (although several of the items are available on both parts of the menu). For my entree, I had Sosaties, which were skewered beef filet marinated and topped with a sweet apricot curry sauce, served with yellow and white rice and vegetables. The beef was extremely tender with a touch of char on the outside. The apricot curry sauce had a spicy sweetness. Overall, an excellent dish.
We also had a bottle of a South African wine that was quite good (although I fail to recall the name).
A bit out of the way and a bit under the radar, 10 Degrees South delivers excellent food and a unique experience. I'd certainly recommend it for a date night, or some other special occasion where you're looking to do something a bit out of the norm.

This is my 2nd time at 10 degrees South, and I had another good experience!
FOOD: We started with the Bobotie Spring Rolls which is 4 spring rolls around beef curry with a side of mashed potatoes. It's a nice portion for two people. Another app we had was the Crab Pastries, which was crab baked in a flaky pastry. It was okay, but it could've had more crab. For dinner, I had the Chicken Curry, which was chicken, potato, veggies in spicy curry sauce with sliced bananas and sprinkles of coconut on top of a bed of yellow and white rice. You might think bananas and coconut on curry! Yes, but it was good.

My friend had her b-day dinner here and it was a great choice! The restaurant has a cozy feel. As an app, we ordered the Bobotie spring rolls with an apricot sauce and the crab cake puff pastry. The spring roll was delicious! It came with a scoop of mashed potatoes. I thought the crab cake was so-so. I could barely taste the crab. The safari salad was also ordered and it was over powered with rosemary. However, there were many fresh veggies and mangos with a mango dressing. I ordered a glass of riesling and I felt like it wasn't $7 worth bc it wasn't even half full. Next time, I'll order the bottle!
For the entree, I ordered the Sosaties which was like a beef kabob without the skewers. I wasn't a big fan of the apricot sauce that the meat was marinated in bc it had a sour taste. It also came with a side of white and yellow rice and green beans. The sides where okay. Three people in our party ordered the Sosaties. I also tasted the Cape Kingkilp which was a white fish. It just melted in your mouth. It was the best out of all the entrees. Birthday girl ordered the prawns, which I thought were cooked a little too long and another friend ordered chicken curry. I didn't try the curry, but my friend said it was good. It was different from the regular curry that I'm used to, bc it had coconut and bananas.
We brought a cake and they charged $1.50 cake cutting fee per person. They didn't even cut or serve the cake for us! Overall, this place is great, yet different. The service is also very good!

My hubby spent 6 years in Africa so this was a treat to take him here and get his opinion on the authenticity of the place; which by the way was two thumbs up!
The service was great, the waitress made great suggestions and we each ordered a different plate.
Scott had the escargot as an appetizer and it was prepared exactly the way he like it, served in a rich creamy garlic butter sauce.
For dinner he ordered the Filet "Au Poivre" - An 8 oz. Angus filet mignon grilled to your liking, topped with a Madagascan creamy peppercorn sauce served with potatoes and vegetables. Apparently the "au poivre" sauce very specific to Africa is hard to duplicate as this is the only restaurant that hit the mark. After his first bite, he said wow, I feel like I'm back home!
As an appetizer, I had the prawns that were marinated Portuguesen peri-peri style. (Piri-piri, peri-peri or peli-peli is the name used in Mozambique and Angola to describe the African bird's-eye chili. Peri-Peri sauce is the hot East African sauce made from dried and soaked piri-piri chillies.) It wasn't too hot though and it tasted great. I liked it.
For dinner I ordered Sosaties - Skewered beef filet marinated and topped with a sweet apricot curry sauce, grilled to perfection served with yellow and white rice and vegetables. OMG, it was to die for! The marinaded beef was scrumptious!! I will definitely order this again!!!
I also tried a bite of the Cape Kingklip. The King of South African fish - a white mild fish grilled and served with lemon butter sauce, rice and vegetables. Even though this is an unknown fish stateside, try it. It was good, very mild, and the sauce was a great compliment.
We also ordered the Chicken Curry - Made with traditional South African spices and herbs served on a bed of yellow and white rice accompanied with sambals. (Sambal is a condiment typically made from a variety of peppers, although chili peppers are the most common. Sambal is used as a condiment or as a side dish, and is sometimes substituted for fresh chilis; it can be very hot for the uninitiated.) Again, OMG. You must order this one too! The mixture of the chicken, curry, coconut, and bananas was amazing to experience. AMAZING!
Make sure you order their desserts too. LOL, we went with some friends and Whitney ordered two desserts because she wanted to try both!!
10 Degrees South - a very posh clientele, however understated to the unknowing eye. The food is great, as is the service, and ambiance.
You should definitely give this place a try, you will be glad you did!
PS - and we would love to go again, so drop me a line! :)

I've been wanting to try this place out for awhile and when I found out I was going here for Julie's birthday celebration, I got pretty excited! She was having her party at the bar which is located at the back of the restaurant. The space is simple, yet beautiful and they have a beautiful patio. They also had an acoustic guitar player playing some songs...it was ok, but just a bit weird since the restaurant is a bit more upscale.
We all started out with drinks and I ordered the Hanger Vodka and Tonic. I know its a pretty simple drink to make, but the bartender did an amazing job! For dinner, I ordered the Safari Salad with Prawns. It was fantastic and I enjoyed the mango and cantaloupe in the salad and the papaya dressing was to die for. For dessert, I ordered the Chocolate Truffle with Vanilla Ice Cream. It was really rich, but I expected the dessert to be more like a Chocolate Lava Cake with a gooey center.
The customer service is excellent and very attentive! I definitely recommend and will have to go back and try their Vegetable Curry dish. Oh, and how can you not love that they serve Bitch wine!

Can I just say AMAZING food, wine, atmosphere?
Besides the fact that it's a one-of-a-kind place for Atlanta, of course, it's just plain good quality of food and service. Wine selection was awesome, too. Nothing I disliked... besides maybe the not-so-friendly vallet guy.

Cool place, in a nondescript building. Great service.
Ordered:
-calamari
-bobotie (sweet ground beef curry)
-sosaties (beef filet)
-ostrich
-Cape Klngkllp (fish)
Boboties were the tastiest. The ostrich medallions were presented in an undesirable manner, drowning in brown sauce and visually unappealing. No one was too excited about the food which was sad because I had a lot of hopes for this place :(

I went for a small dinner and was very pleased.
A little drafty, but cozy setting none the less.
So I tried the lamb lollipops, tasty with a dash of potatoes
and the curry chicken
very different,spicy and tasty
not yr typical dish, but in a good way
onlydownflal is they only had three south african wines, YET its a south african restaurant &they were double in price (an 8 dollar glass for most their wines, but S.A. wines went to 14/15)!
I give it 4 because it stands out on what it offers, but def. not a place to make a regular spot

Wow. I was really excited to try 10 Degrees South this past weekend because I had always wanted to go. I had read the reviews here on Yelp which added to my enthusiasm when a friend suggested we go this weekend.
I seriously do not think I ate in the same restaurant.
I gave TDS two stars based on the interior and the wine list. I had a delicious South African rose that was resonably priced at 8 a glass. The interior is very slick and well done - you can tell no expense was spared when they redid the place.
Outside of that, the food was pretty dismal across the board. One of my dining companions is FROM South Africa and had been to TDS before. He was so horribly disappointed by our meal here. We tried the boerwoers, which was decent enough. It was sort of glopped up by a sweet sauce on it that was not helped by the watery tomatoy/oniony sauce in the ramekin on the plate. The chicken livers in the peri-peri sauce were tasty enough. The peri peri had little to no heat - it seemed to be the Buckhead dumbed down version. The bread that accompanied it needed to be toasted as a good textural counterpoint to the livers.
The lowest point of the meal was the Caesar Salad topped with Biltong. Having never had it, it was described to me as "spicy, flavorful cured meat". This tasted like...nothing. Absolutely nothing. The salad was not tossed in the dressing - just drizzled with it. The entire dish was bland and pedestrian.
We wanted to try more things but were just so disheartened. A dessert was ordered - a chocolate truffle thing - that seemed very average and not homemade.
Service varied from comical to irritating. Our server didn't seem to be able to answer many questions about the cuisine, which I find odd seeings as TDS is such an unusual restaurant. He did warm up as the night went on. The busboys were hovering most of the meal and we couldn't shake them. They were just LOOKING for something to do.
This place is definetely a scene - the fancy cars out front and the pretty Buckhead crowd. If I lived in the area, I can see stopping in at the bar for a drink...but I would never go back for the food.

10 Degrees South is one of the best restaurants in Atlanta.
Hands down.
My first couple of experiences were several years ago. This place wasn't popular yet (I guess Zagat's hadn't featured them), the lounge area didn't exist, and there was no outdoor seating.
Now it's popular, there's a really hip lounge, and there's everyone's favorite, an outdoor patio. That's all that's changed - still delicious.
We have awesome service. Several of the waiters are Afrikaner, as is the owner himself. He came over to the table to check on us on a couple different visits, and we would have conversations about Cape Town (my date had vacationed there, including a safari when he killed a gazelle. Bastardly!).
I always order a South African wine. They are delicious and well priced by the glass.
The food. Oh man the food.
I'm going to mention anything that received raves by the majority of friends/guests. Keep in mind several of the foods here are listed on both the appetizer and main course menus...proportions are just different:
Boerewors - you like sausage, you'll like this.
Mussels - yesss
Calamari - every restaurant has calamari. Order it here anyway.
Sosaties (beef)
Lamb chops - of the lollipop variety. Someone in the group always orders this. Makes me think of my favorite sock puppet.
Okay the only entree I order: Cape Kingklip. The meal of champions. This is a mild white fish that has the most delicious sauce in the world on top. You intermingle your mashed potatoes with this sauce. Oh man. I'm guessing the sauce is 80% butter.
And dessert. The truffle is the only way to go.
It's not like a chocolate truffle a la Godiva, but a molten lava cake, a la mode.
At the end of one meal we ordered a to-go truffle for a friend we were about to visit. The waitress put it in a box and actually wrote down microwave heat-up times on the lid. That's the kind of service we're talking about.
Come here if you finally get that hot date you really want to impress. Or you're inviting out your future in-laws. Or you want a party in your mouth. Whenever.

I ate here a few months back so I cant remember exactly what I had to eat other than the escargot which was great. I had never tried escargot before and since it is snails, most people have a gag reflex as soon as they hear it. However I was pleasantly surprised by the taste (kind of like mushrooms in garlic sauce) and enjoyed them immensely. The South African wines were quite good as well and one of my favorite vineyards is Seidelberg but sadly I cant find them in Atlanta.
I give this place a 9 out of 10. The selection could have been a little larger but the person I was with and I enjoyed ourselves regardless.

This place definitely had a cool, hip vibe. Music was mostly downtempo beats. I was really excited about dining here because I saw ostrich on the menu. I have always wanted to try it. Actually, more than anything, I want to eat an ostrich egg omelet.
So about 3 slices of ostrich medallions came out. I was hoping for a revelation, but it wasn't as good as I expected. I don't know how to describe the texture. The only word that comes to mind is floppy. I lost a little faith in ostrich meat, but maybe I'll try it at Absinthe Cafe in CHI.
I also tried the peri peri chicken priced at about $18. Peri Peri chicken is quite rare in the U.S. so I guess TDS can charge whatever they want. I wasn't dazzled with the idea of peri peri chicken because I have tried it before in UK for cheaper at this chain called Nando's. They have more Nando's restaurants than El Pollo Locos in the U.S. Cost is about 5 pounds and tastes just as good. Just found out they opened a Nando's in Washington D.C. last month. Hopefully, it flourishes as Chipotle has and makes it's way to CHI because peri peri is tasty tasty. If you can't wait and absolutely have to try it, they sell sauces and marinades online at http://nandosperiperi..../

This avant garde Buckhead restaurant specializes in South African cuisine which is an interesting amalgamation of European, SE Asian, Indian and local tribal influences. Heavy use of spices with just the right amount of sweetness. I think the most perfect dish my dining companion and I ate was chicken livers sauteed in a spicy peri-peri sauce. The sauce was a perfect compliment to the strong taste that liver normally has. We also had traditional South African dishes called Bobotie (sweet ground beef curry topped with this amazingly savory custard and baked) and Boerewors, a traditional South African sausage. Throw in some perfectly spiced and cooked Ostrich and you have a can't miss meal!

This restaurant is a special place to my fiancee and I - it was both the location of our first date and where (later!!) I asked her to marry me.
It is a wonderful restaurant with amazing food, service and atmosphere. The staff is truly top notch and the food is unique, but very well done. I've yet to hear a complaint about any dish. My personal favorite is the ostrich - wow, it is making my stomach growl writing this!!

Can we say 'fabulous?'
Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've had in Atlanta.
I'd driven by this place dozens of times, and I will say that the outside image leaves a bit to be desired. It's in a nondescript area up Roswell Rd., and they have a giant black and white lit sign. But as the song goes, 'everything changes' once you step inside.
Whoa.
One of those places that will hit all your senses - just as you enter, you're greeted by the sounds of boisterous diners laughing and clinking glasses and live music, and then the calming light of the casual, yet polished, interior.
We had drinks at the bar, where the jolly cool bartender (with quite the saucy accent, I must add) gave us his story and my birthday friend a complimentary shot, too.
We were taken to our table - here's where the truly amazing part comes.
The food.
I had the bobotie, which is ground beef curry and rice, and our party of six definitely sampled each other's dishes. I won't tell you how incredible they were because it would be like ruining the ending of a great movie - it'll be even better when you can discover for yourself!
Just based on concept alone - upscale South African cuisine - 10 Degrees already has a niche that we're fortunate to have in Atlanta. But a great concept + even better interpretation and delivery?
Five freakin' stars, baby. Five.

went here for dinner with the bf and if was lovely! Our waiter made great recommendations and the food & ambiance was wonderful. will definitely be back! loves it!
As my hubby said below-we got engaged here ;-) So it's a special place for us anyway..
The menu is great and filled with things that you don't see everywhere. I've tried 3 or 4 entrees and they've never disappointed me.
The atmosphere is great too and the servers, host/hostess and others are always very cheerful and welcoming... Can't wait to go back sometime soon.

I LOVE it! I visited South Africa in 2000 and have had mad cravings for that tasty food since then. I went to this place for my birthday with a group of friends.
The atmosphere is great: real mellow, friendly, and comfortable. The food was off the hook! (I had the ostrich). And the drinks were tasty. I had a "spring bok".
Everyone should check out this place at least once in their lifetime!
UPDATE: 2/5/08
This place is fabulous! Like Deanna J, the best dining experience I've ever had in Atlanta! This was my return trip to celebrate getting into graduate school and my best friend getting a new job. I ordered the Bobotie! Delish!! It's ground beef seasoned with curry and a sweet secret sauce. Then it's topped with custard and paired with yellow and white rice. The balance of flavors was just right. It made me want to cry, it tasted so good. The presentation was flawless. I took pictures of everyone's plates because it was that beautiful. A picasso on a plate.
Others in the group ordered the Piri Piri Chicken, the 14 oz Steak. When I say that we cleaned the plates, I'm not kidding. There was not a morsel left on our plates.
Then, to top it off and make this restaurant my ALL TIME FAVORITE...again, the manager heard that we were celebrating and brought out Flan for our group! The perfect touch. Not to mention that he was so attentive and always checking back to see that we were enjoying our dining experience.
Fabulous!

I thank all that is holy that my cousin, the total networking queen, knows the owners of this little slice of heaven just a hop, skip and a jump away from Buckhead. I've been here twice and both times was so WOWed by the cuisine and the choice of wonderful South African wine that I felt OBLIGED to give this little location my five star approval.
If you are ever down South and are open to a different dining experience, try 10 Degrees South. The food is not so shocking to the senses so be daring and give it a go!

This place was pretty good and awful at the same time. Walking in we were welcomed by a guy on acoustic guitar from the bar playing Lightning Crashes...
Lightning fucking Crashes.
Meanwhile in the actual dining room they were piping in late 80s dance music. After a while I started looking around for Max Headroom.
The service was good though the food was uneven. The bobotie was a sweet curry dish formed in the shape of a beret encircled with two mounds of rice. Not very good at all. The chocolate truffle at the end of the meal was though.
Now that I think about it, it was mostly not very good.

This place makes me want to live in South Africa! After one meal, I was hooked! The decorative walls and smooth music in the background was the perfect complement to the Chicken Piri dish I ordered. My tongue literally did a happy dance as I ate.
The waiters/waitresses and bar tenders are equally friendly as they are good looking! The mix of different accents made me feel like I was dining outside of the U.S.
We were given a free shot from the bartender too! The minty/smooth and creamy Spring Bock Shot, is SO good (and worth trying out). It should be marketed and bottled to be enjoyed by the masses!
I'm definitely going back at my next opportunity!

A great suggestion from ATL Yelpers (thanks Deanna J!), 10 Degrees South is a unique restaurant that was very impressive for a group dinner last week. As one of the few upscale South African restaurants, 10 Degrees offers dishes that are a fusion of Dutch, Malaysian, Portuguese, French, and German influences. As many of the dishes are new, we started off with a Safari platter, which was a sampler of 4 dishes, which helped us in our decision of entrees. The grilled calamari was also a very good choice for a starter.
For an entree, 3 of us chose the Sosaties, which are skewered beef fillets with an apricot curry. The beef was very well-marinated and very flavorful. I tried the chicken curry, which has a flavor very unlike Indian or Thai curry. The Bobotie was also very interesting, and reminded me of a Shepherd pie, albeit with a sweet curried beef.
South Africa is known for pinotage grapes, and although the selection of pinotage wines was fairly small, the wines were well-selected and reasonably priced. I also tried a Castle Lager beer from South Africa which also goes well with the spicier dishes.
The restaurant interior is also a plus - Dark and sexy, with lounge music and an outdoor patio for warmer evenings. Overall, highly recommended for a unique experience with great food and atmosphere. Thanks again Atlanta Yelpers!

I went here with my wife for our anniversary. When you drive up the outside is uneventful, and I even questioned whether or not I was in the right drive way. Once inside, the decorating is a little simple but I feel like the dinner more than made up for it.
We started with the calamari and I would definitely recommend it. One of the things I noticed was that while every restaurant has calamari, the flavor from this dish was pretty amazing. My main entree was the same way. It was a simple white fish i had never heard of, but the sauce they used on it made the meal.
Half-way through the meal I switched with my wife and finished the rest of her ostrich. The first and only time before this that I had Ostrich was actually in Cape Town, SA. This time around it was cut really thin, and was good but not great. I wish they had left it as a thick filet, like the first time I had it. If it is served right Ostrich is on par with filet mignon.
They had Sweetwater 420 and the wine list was extensive, which was a plus.
Ever since we went everyone always asks what type of food it was. I'm definitely looking forward to going back with anyone that is not afraid to try something new, and also anyone coming to Atlanta from out of town.

Perhaps the most underrated restaurant in atlanta - i think because folks think it something other than what it is - i enjoyed by fish (don't ask what kind it was something from South Africa) - i enjoyed the sauces and dried beef - not a drinker but if i was i best i could get a nice SA wine - nice folks with funny accents --
This is one of the best restaurants in Atlanta. I still don't really understand South African food, but whatever it is, it rocked. Eclectic, fun, different, taste bud explosion. I always always have out of town guests or business associates go here, and they always thank me for a great dining experience. Food: Excellent. Wines: Excellent Service: Excellent Atmosphere: Very cool. Check it out!

According to lore, this is the only high-end South African restaurant in the United States. There is a large S.A. community in Atlanta because Delta flew direct flights to S.A. until last year, and S.A.'s don't like to change planes, so they stayed. We had a delicious meal that really spanned the culinary diversity of the country - curries, lamb chops, and a most excellent fish. Great wine selection, and I mean top top, and we polished it off with an Amarula. Drunk elephants are funny!

I loved this place, good service with humor ( we cracked jokes with the waiter) . Food is as expected, wildabeast sausages and quail appetizers. I make a point to visit Monthly as a break from American "cookie cutter" restaurants. Great SA wine selection. This IS a good date spot or client dinner location for the above normal dining experience.

Truth: Atlanta is home to a large ex-pat South African population (at least the white ones). Truth: 10 Degrees South is one of the few South African restaurants in the US. This is a handsome little bistro just up Roswell Road from Buckhead proper. The dining room is elegant and understated. The separate bar/lounge area is in the back and is attached by a nice patio. the creative menu offers some traditional South African dishes as well as some newer ones. The staff is helpful in answering questions about the food and culture. I enjoyed the hearty bobotie beef curry topped with a savory custard. A fresh fish special is offered daily and often includes lesser known species. Don't let the casual atmosphere fool you, this place can be quite pricey. There is an acoustic guitar player on some evenings, which to be honest is not necceassary. Judging form the fancy import cars parked out front by the valets, this place attracts an affluent crowd.
