Great place for inexpensive good food. Not for sissies.

Located across the street from Foodland & Starbucks, we drove pass every morning until finally on Day 6 of our Maui vacay we decided to give it a shot. The giant banner for $2.99 breakfast was what drew us in. Your choices were portugese sausage, spam, hot dog, corned beef or american style sausage with fried rice and eggs for $2.99. Cheap and decent but not outstanding. You definately get what you pay for. The tables are food court style but outside and about halfway thru our meal a chimney smoker sat by us and started puffing away. Needless to say, all 4 of us lost our appetites and that was the end of our meal.

Cool spot to grab some local grub without the hub bub!
Large portion lunch plates and decent prices! They are open late and early, so you can get you fix at almost anytime.
Its in Lahaina right next to the Mickey D's, open air corner spot in the lot with plenty of parking. Typical lunch plates/musubi/saimin/burgers/chinese fast food, bottle/canned soft drink "/ ...and a decent range of goodies on the menu!
Regular Sized Loco Moco was good, massive portions of rice and mac salad, plenty of gravy over the jumbo burger patties, and 2 decently fried eggs. They do a job on making it the comfort food it is!
Seafood & BBQ Mixed Plate was also massive, 3 Butterfly Fried Scrimps, Fried Pork Cutlet, 3 Short Ribs, 2 Scoops Rice, 1 Scoop Mac Salad.
The rice/mac salad are good ole' standard fare, nothing to write home about as there are a ton of other spot that can match it. The eggs were a bit runny for my taste, but the burger patties size and juiciness definitely made up for it. The Fried Scrimps were crispy and lightly breaded, went well with the tar tar sauce/sriracha and didn't leave you feeling like a grease ball. The Short Ribs has a nice flavor but a little more chewy than I like.
Overall this spot is a great bang for your buck over Aloha Mixed Plate (AMP), the portions were large enough I couldn't finish off the rice/mac salad. The difference between the spots is really just the Bar and the surrounding beach. -

Food-wise, this place is a Better than Aloha Mixed Plate, but since it's in a funky strip mall the ambiance is lacking. Good food and big portions and cheap.

Listen to a girl who calls Maui her hometown. This place is a great place for a cheap delicious breakfast, a quick plate lunch, or a late-night food run.
Personally, and speaking for others as I know many others who would swear by this, but they have the biggest portion for the cheapest price for a delicious breakfast. They have the big sign out front selling their $2.99 breakfast, and it isn't a rip off.
You get a generous amount of fried rice, (which is not bland, like so many i've found) a fried scrambled egg, and your choice of a breakfast meat (I recommend the mochiko chicken or portuguese sausage) and for all that, you can't beat the price. So many mornings, before school, or work, friends and I would flock here to get our cheap breakfast fill. It's convenient.
Their breakfast is my favorite, but they also have some great hawaiian and chinese bbq for lunch and dinner. They have a very large menu, and all for competitive prices. We'd sometimes stop by before a late night movie, or after night shifts. It's never too busy, as their customers come scattered throughout the day. But I definitely recommend this place for breakfast. I now cannot wait to make it back home. -

This is definitely a hole in the wall place that I was looking to pick up a quick plate lunch at.
They have a wide variety of chinese and hawaiian fare here but i decided on the galbi ribs and mac salad which I had been quite lucky with previously in my trips.
It wasnt that good here, the galbi was stringy and not really cooked all that great. The mac salad was ok and perhaps so is the other stuff, but I wouldnt get the bbq short ribs here if I were you. -

We stumbled across this spot while looking for parking - we saw many locals ordering so decided to try it out.
We ordered the mixed BBQ plate and mini curry chicken katsu. Both had a generous portion size - taste was good. We even had leftover for lunch for the next day. It's a cheap spot for decent food -

A fairly hole-in-the-wall-ish place that's simply a walk up window with outside seating. Both times I've been there, I was the only tourist, and the rest of the customers were locals.
The best part of this place is the extensive menu. They've got your traditional Hawaiian BBQ plate lunches, plus Chinese (think Panda Express style), plus hot dogs, burgers and fries.
The first time I came here I got a plate lunch, and was quite happy with it (BBQ beef and chicken katsu). Second time I got some Saimin, and it hit the spot. The only item I didn't like much were the dumplings, they came out a little overcooked and chewy.
High recommendation for quick, cheap eats with lots of variety. It's not a tourist trap, but the quality of food is probably comperable to what you'd get on the other side of Wainee St. by the shore (for less money).
Tip: The paper menu behind the counter has more items than the sign outside displays. -

Breakfast Review
I like meat in my breakfast, and this place has it at an awesome price.
The inn where I stayed at has free breakfast, but only the usual free stuff which is pastries, eggs, fruit, juice and coffee...and no meat. Luckly I found No. 1 BBQ on my way to McDonalds.
There were a few local polynesian bruddas gathering at No.1 BBQ, and from past experience that's usually a good sign. For $3.50 you get the breakfast special, but in reality you're likely get an extra item and maybe coffee, pushing the price up to $5-6. Remember that this is Hawaii, where everything is expensive, so 5-6 is a relative bargain.
For the base price they give you one meat item (sausage, bacon, chicken, and I think maybe spam, not sure if I'm confusing that with McDonalds which has spam too), scrambled eggs and either fried rice or rice. The meats tended to be fresh, and the guy gave me large hunks of manly bacon (not the usual tiny 3-4 strips you usually get at a cafe). I went two days in a row, got my meat breakfast fix and started those days of with a smile on my face. I really wish there was a place here in the bay area that offered the same thing at the same price, but I'll have to leave those dreams and wishes there at No.1 BBQ.
Pros:
-Generous MEAT breakfast
-great bargain
-outdoor seating
-friendly workers
Cons:
-no bed and breakfast style options, in case you're with others that like that stuff (no cut fruit, bagels, toast, cereal)
-no coffee available on my second visit
(I got coffee at Maui Grown Coffee anyways, about a block and a half away)
Unknown: I don't know how lunch or dinner is, although I had the Lau Lau at dinner and really enjoyed it. -

I do not give five stars lightly. By far the best "BBQ" chicken sandwich (teriyaki basted chicken thighs on a sesame seed bun with mayo and iceberg lettuce) for under $3. I am going to try to recreate this at home. In the words of my two yeat old, this sandwich is "delicious". The mac salad is tasty too. We visited No. 1 several times and found it lived up to its name.

I hoped this would be as good or even better than L & L, so we ordered Saimin noodle soup, fried mahi mahi, and chicken katsu, with mac salad. Noodle soup was just 'ok', the chicken katsu tasted funny (because it was fried in the same deep fryer as the fish), the fish was dry and tough (and a tiny portion). The mac salad seemed odd. All in all, I was worried we would get sick. I don't know if they re-cooked old food or we caught them on a bad day, but we won't go back. It's too bad because their menu looked very interesting.

Went for the cheap breakfast special since all the local construction workers were lined up there for breakfast. I was not disappointed. Fried rice, fried eggs, and sausage or bacon for under 4 bucks. Good hearty fuel for the day

not so hot. i've had much better food. the fired rice was fried rice but i'm not sure what the "chicken" in the orange chicken was. they were cleaning the seating area with hoses pulled thru the service window while we were there, including where we were sitting. we finally left because we were getting wet and it was kind of gross.
