[For some reason 1&1 is in multiple places on Yelp, so this is a repost]

Uggh. This must be, by far the worst Web Host in the WORLD. Or at least in the United States. If you have a domain name or multiple domain names, they are set to "AUTO RENEW". 1AND1 does not  really tell you this up front, it is in the fine print. I had a big bill and they have all these strict rules on how they process your payment. I had two invoices but only one contract number so they would not even let my spilt my two invoices into two payments. They told me either I had to pay it on the spot or they would not be able to accept payment. They would barley budge and they DID NOT tell me that my other invoice for $250 was not paid for yet. So I could NOT negotiate that invoice because they already gave me a one time courtesy on the $450 invoice to take off some domain names to help get my invoice down to a reasonable amount I could pay. On top of this, they could not try and run my credit card on the spot to see if it would even work! They DO NOT process credit card transactions over $500 on the spot do to "security purposes." So I won't even know if my credit card payment went through until Monday. Since they only process transactions on business days and it is Friday (today after 12:00EST). If this is how they want to retain customers, they are in for a treat trying to offer services to the United States market. I give this company 2 more years until they are acquired or bankrupt. With this kind of service they will not be in business much longer. Go-daddy will eat them alive. The ONLY thing 1AND1 did right for me this time, is the fact that they opened up my control panel so I can manage my domain name accounts over the weekend. Honestly I think they should not even lock the "Administration" side of the control panel until you have a grossly over due balance. I was only a couple weeks late and they did not even remind me that my bill was due by phone, mail or email. You are just supposed to know when you are up for billing or by going to the "Account" panel under billing on the 1AND1 control panel. I also hate the fact that with a 1AND1 domain account you are only allowed up to 5 sub domains TOTAL. This does not mean 5 sub domains per domain name you own but 5 sub domains per ENTIRE account. So if you own 100 sub domains you are out of luck, you better choose wisely what you want your 5 sub domains to be for your entire account of 100 domain names. They told me on the phone that they could not offer me more sub domains do to "security purposes." I responded, "Really? Due to security purposes huh?"  This is a horrible policy and it is REALLY in place to make you have to upgrade to one of their other more expensive web services that offers more sub domains in a package type deal.

Also on another note I heard their customer service is horrible for their dedicated hosting services. They pretty much make their prices reasonable by cutting out any kind of support and if you have a kernal bug on your Linux server, you pretty much have to wipe out your server and start new with one of their SPECIAL disk images for a clean install. You can not just use your own software do to "security purposes." That is always their excuse "security purposes." I am so tired of hearing that. I mean really tired. 1AND1 will tell you if it's a server problem, server service, sub domain question or if you are trying to pay a bill over $500. It is most likely that their answer to you is going to be "Sorry, do to security purposes, we can not help you sir." I think I am going to transfer all my services to Go-daddy in the near future. Please ADVISE, don't go with 1and1 unless you like feeling as if your being "thrown around like used dog toy and then stomped on a few times". The 1AND1 people on the phone may try to sound helpful but they really can't do anything for their customers. They all seem to be following a "strict set of guidelines" that are written in stone, seemingly from some higher order above the glass ceiling, and there really is nothing the 1AND1 customer service people can do to help you with your web service issues and problems. It is not entirely their fault, it is the fault of bad upper management. I believe if upper management truly cared about their customers, had better vision and more fair rules about how their business model should work, maybe my experience would have been different.

So I hope everyone will do themselves a favor and take their domain, e-mail, webhosting, vps, server, ecommerce and other web businesses else where. You will save your selves a lot time, troubles, and big head aches if just take your business to another web service company.

    Thanks for reading.

This side is a scam. They charge me every year couple times for domains I don't have and I don't use. Always try to fix it however spend more time than the money I will save since they don't know nothing about it. This is a headache. I had been working on this for hours.

Why can't I give them NO stars!!! This is the worst domain registrar in the world. They use bait and switch tactics. There support is non-existence. Their billing department is totally screwed up. It takes days or weeks to get anything done.

They are trying charge me $9.99 instead of the $0.99 quoted when I placed the order. Since these are transferred they now have the ability to hold my domains hostage. They want $1283.00....Should only be $185.00

I have over 200 domains and I've been building websites since 1994. I've used dozens of hosting companies and registrars. 1&1 is the WORST by far!!!

ZERO STARS HERE!  Same as all the other reviews.  Had called to report and error with the log in and cancelled service as my contract was up.  They didn't cancel, claim I never called and now are telling me that either I pay for the addtional service fees or they are sending my info the a collector!  WOW!  They have the worst customer service.  Filled a complaint to BBB along with hundreds of others I saw posted on there as well.   I wish I had read about all this prior to getting mixed up with this company.

    Well, 1 & 1 strikes again.

    NEVER EVER USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!!

After canceling our two accounts in January, being wrongfully billed in February and having to jump through hoops to get a credit issued, 1 & 1 just sent us an invoice for service for April through July stating that our service was never cancelled. They happily deleted our account again, but now I have to talk with yet another department to get another credit memo issued.

At what point can we bring legal action against this incompetent, less than reputable company for lost work time?

The worst company on the planet. You need a "no star" rating for these people.

Last time it took a Yelp post to even get customer service to contact me. Let's see if I hear from them this time!

I had originally had my PC person set up an account for my web site with 1&1. Since I found him to be shady in his fees, I dismissed him.

He did tell me the first year was free but to my chagrin he did not tell me that there would be a $29.94 monthly charge there after (I found this out via the mail).

After much negotiating they agreed to cancel my  account on the 27th, no further fees and credit my CC a prorated rebate as of today. Well the account is cancelled but no prorated rebate.

1&1 you don't make 2, even stars in my book!

In the 11 years I have been doing IT this is the worst service I have ever had from an internet services company.

I asked for one thing, they sold me another, then the bill expired and they did not contact me in any way other than robo-calls and spam.  Then they sent us to collections without ever having heard from us.  The bill was less than $100 but they refuse to accept money.  One has to pay the collections company.

I did that on Sunday, now it is Thursday and we still do not have any way to update the account.  One side says I have paid, and the other side says that they have not received the money yet and nothing can be done.

They also decided to blame me for them not trying to get in touch in any other way than spam and robo calls.  A second look at my account also shows that they have an address for me that they made up.  When asked they told me that they are getting around to sending me paper mail soon.

Forget them.  Any other hosting and DNS provider has better service and a better attitude.  Their attitude is that it is all OUR fault and we had our chance so it is OK for them to take forever to accept money and fix our accounts.

Of the numerous web hosts I used over the past decade and half, 1and1 by far is the WORST I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with.  Their hosting is AWFUL.. Numerous and repeated outages, downtimes and worse..  Support there is a NIGHTMARE as it's outsourced to India and you can't even understand these incompetent morons...   They don't even deserve a star...  I've used dozens of hosts in my time, but never one as bad as this company.   If you value your business and website, stay far away from this incompetent and half assed company

Horrible customer service.  Only one out of the several reps I talked to were friendly.  The others sounded like they were about to commit suicide.

My husband and I attempted to cancel our domain name and got a million different answers.  We finally talked to one rep who said that we could cancel and then get a refund, but this was eventually shot down by his supervisor.  When I spoke to said supervisor, he sounded like a cold-hearted robot, reading straight out of a manual.

I will NEVER have another domain hosted by 1 & 1 Internet.

    Can we have NO Stars?

1&1 deserves the Golden Turd award. I am 10 days into trying to make a simple DNS change for a client. I'll take some blame, ooops, should have been a .net instead of a .com. But really??

The problem as I see it, off-shore support, a customer service department trained in the fine art of the "run around". And frankly, it's like dealing with a government. 1&1 does not elude a sense that they care.

I have dealt with many hosting companies and domain registrars, no one even comes close to 1&1 with poor customer service. I even went as far as tracking down the local phone number in Chesterbrook. When I called, I introduced myself as "A desperate customer, sick and tired of off-shore support. And will you pleeeeez help (begging tone included)".

Yep, got transferred over to the abyss known as customer service. And wouldn't cha know, after waiting on hold for 20+ minutes...the call dropped. Talk about kicking a man in the gonads while he's writhing on the floor.

1&1 it amazes me you can stay in business!!!!! I vote for the GOLDEN TURD award.

I've hosted my domain with 1&1 for nearly three years and about a year ago I opened a hosted account for my personal website and for working on client projects. I just want to say without a doubt, they are the most professional, have best rates, and best product out there when it comes to web hosting services (you can setup either Microsoft or Linux services, and of course there is dedicated hosting available).

Yes, there are some other hosting services that may provide little perks here and there if you're, say, a blogger or someone who does a lot of video. But if you're looking for a well rounded hosting service that offers everything you'll need to run a blog, host a website, stream audio/video, 1&1 is great.

I signed up for hosting during their 25th Anniversary special, so I got a special rate; however, regular rates are great too.

For somewhere between $7-$9 a month, I get TWO domains, 1200 mailboxes (you never know when some day you'll have a small business that needs to run email), 120GB storage space, and 120GB monthly bandwidth. Here's where 1&1 really stands apart: they give you 25 SEPARATE MySQL databases. Crazy, huh? They're running PHP5, so everything is the latest and greatest. There are also a slew of tools for doing everything that an online business could need: RSS, Shopping, web stats, and the list goes on and on.

I've had to go on the phone with tech support several times to clear up some issues I was having when I transferred my account to a business account and they fixed it with a few hours. Normally, I don't have to wait more than 5 minutes for tech support. Someone normally picks up right away.

So, my recommendation is to avoid hosting services like GoDaddy, and stick with this real dynamo of an Internet Hosting service.

This company smells like a German national company decided to expand into the US without an understanding of US based credit card protocols.

    Oh wait, it is.

1and1 hosts my site, http://www.101Secrets.com where I give away an eBook on credit and FICO scores.  They charge small amounts on my Amex card.  The dollar amounts are between $6-60 based on usage.

The company tried to put a transaction of $29.94 through but it fell on a cusp of an expiration date in November.  Normal US based merchants run the charge card MINUS the expiration date since card processors don't need the expiration date!!!.

Since November, 1and1 has successfully charged small amounts (($22.46 on 11/27, 25.94 on 12/20, etc) but  sent $29.94 to "collections" and locked the website 101Secrets

    Lessons learned...
    - Keep electronic copies of ontime payments
    -Take phone record notes
    - Summarize complaint in writing and CC a third party website like http://Yelp.com

    Other reminder lessons...
    - card companies can still charge your credit card EVEN AFTER IT EXPIRES
    - never close your account because you can't dispute charges in a closed account.
    - Instead of closing an account, reduce your credit line.
    - If you must close an account, call in your card stolen... wait 30 days and then close it.  Make sure you write a letter to claim your card was stolen
    - if you're using a debit card, the recourse you have is less strong compared to a credit card.  US laws protect you getting ripped off via credit.  US "Fair credit reporting act" doesn't apply to debit

SUMMARY: IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CREDIT REPORT, STAY AWAY FROM 1&1

I've been a customer with 1&1 since 2003.  They are the WORST company in the world.  They're OK charging my card for 7 years until the card's expiration date changed from 2009 to 2013.  They DID NOT notify me of any problems.

The next thing I know, my credit report monitoring service goes haywire and tells me they reported me as a 9 severity credit risk to all three credit agencies.  This brought my score down from 790 to 640 in one hit.  Now I have to deal with bad credit for the next seven years. THANKS 1&1, YOU SURE KNOW HOW TO TREAT YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS.

DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH ANY INFORMATION.  on top of this, their infrastructure is crap and the site I hosted with them were super slow. STAY AWAY!!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

1 & 1 has the absolute worst customer service of any domain company on the planet today. I would rather pay $500 a month to go with GODADDY than pay $5 a month to go with "1&1".

I got sent to the "complaints department" before I even had a legitimate complaint; but after five minutes on the phones with those schmucks I had a complaint.

Waste of time. Waste of Money. Should be closed for fraudulent practices.

Holy jeez, this is my conversation with tech support:

ME: Yes, is your e-mail server blacklisted? I'm not receiving e-mail from my address attached to my domain name.
TECH SUPPORT: Yes, we know about the problem. All our servers are blacklisted.
ME: Do you know when you will have the problem fixed?
TS: I'm sorry, we cannot give a proper estimate.
ME: Can you give me an improper estimate? Any idea whatsoever?
TS: We are aware of the problem and are working on it. In the meantime why don't you change your outgoing e-mail server.
ME: I can SEND e-mails from anywhere. I could send them from my Hotmail account. That's not the problem. I'm not RECEIVING e-mails.
TS: We're aware of that sir.
ME: Why don't you just move my domain to another server. One with an IP address that isn't blacklisted?
TS: Only the administrators can do that.
ME: I don't care WHO does it. Have they begun moving my site to a new server?
TS: In order to proceed with that your problem needs to be escalated.
ME: As it so happens I was told that my issue HAS been escalated.
    TS: (silence)
    ME: Hello?
TS: The administrators are the only ones who can do that.
ME: Yes, you told me that. Why haven't they moved my domain to another server with a new IP address? That takes a couple minutes. It's been a week. Listen can I talk to an administrator?
TS: You can only talk to an administrator if your case has been escalated.
ME: I just told you it was escalated. So please put me through to an administrator.
    TS: (silence)
    ME: Hello?
    TS: I'm here.
ME: Can you just tell me why they haven't simply moved my domain to a different server? Or at the least move the mailserver to a new IP address? It's the IP address that was blacklisted, right?
TS: We're working on the problem.
ME; Are you sure you're in technical support? Do you understand any of my questions?
TS: The administrators are the ones who can do that.
ME: Can I talk to an administrator?
TS: Your case needs to be escalated.
ME: Can you confirm my case has been escalated?
    TS: It has been escalated.
ME: Good. Please put me through to one of your administrators.
TS: Customers are not allowed to directly contact administrators.
ME: You guys are a joke.
TS: We are aware of that.
    ME: That you're a joke?
    TS: Yes sir.

Worst company in the world.  With internet being a dime a dozen, go with a local shop over these guys!  Customer service is "the customer is wrong" mentality.

I used this company in college and with most of my websites being small projects that usually last less than 1 year.  I subscribed to hosting and domain services.  The pricing sounded good, but what 1&1 fails to mention is the fine print.  That is, 1&1 charges via auto-renew and if you don't pay up (with no email warning or nothing), they not only promptly disconnect service, then sick a collection agency on you for non-payment.  Now a college student moves around quite a bit and not keeping up with my 1&1 account, I forgot about it on more than one occasion.  I thought it would auto-cancel.  First for domain names, one for the hosting service, then for another domain registered using their site.  The collection agency charged $40 per fee, for $120 in fees, plus 1&1's "auto renew" that I needed to pay in order to call off the collection agencies.

When you call to ask about the charges and let them know you do not want services, they say that you have no choice but to pay their fees, since they'd already sent your name to the collection group.  This means you're paying fees, late fees on top of charges that you didn't really want in the first place for service you won't really use.

This company blows dead bears for customer service.  They're cheap and if you don't play exactly by their rules you'll get collection notices.  Not a good way to retain customer loyalty, no sir!

Ive been using 1and1 for the last 3 years now. They offer a decent service at a more than fair price. I have never had any problems aside from one incident where my credit card info changed and one of my sites was taked down because payment wasnt made. I was responsible for the first part, but my account went into collections with another company and it took over a week to get the site back up.

I would recommend any one with a serious site to pay the extra cash and go with a better more personal company, but for the hobbiest that isnt using their site for anything more than fun, this place is fine.

These people more resemble the mob than a legitimate business. Once your in you can never get out. They make it impossible to cancel and will continue charging your credit card until it expires or you cancel your card. I chose the latter and now they are threatening to send me to collections! Keep in mind there is "no contract" but also no way to cancel. These people are flat out crooks!

OK so I can't slam them completely as I've experienced worse hosts and I still have a couple of clients with them (until we move them all over) but geez they keep making things tough. Main issue is their billing. With my own eyes I saw them screw 3 of my clients over because they failed to alert my clients of an expired credit card. All 3 times, these accounts went to collections and for days and on 1 occasion weeks, sites were down. Customer service was very poor. On the plus side, I did find their system reliable and quite feature-rich but was blown away by their deceptive practices. With so many choices out there, try the other one.
