Shopping for a new mattress is an interesting learning experience. First we visited the larger department stores: Sears and JCPenney. The prices from the sales ads were misleading, JCPenney did not mention that there was an additional $40 delivery charge from their warehouse to the store for store pick-up.
We decided to check-out a neighborhood mattress store "1-800-Mattress". We were greeted by a salesman and he inquired as to what we were shopping for. We told him we were shopping for a twin mattress for our daughter.
He led us to the mattresses on display and explained the pros and cons of each mattress. He also mentioned to put ourselves in her situation as to which degree of firmness would be best.
We asked if there were any special offers or single items that remained in inventory. We were able to get a better mattress upgraded, a $75 value, just by asking. Store pick-up, next business day.
A positive experience!
Note: I have not bought anything here yet.
I did stop by the store recently in my mattress hunt quest and though it had a lone staffer and was dimly lit (read: no lighting except for windows) I found the salesman to be very easy to work with. He was able to produce facts and figures (something I hadn't seen before) on how competitive he might be able to sell me comparable products. He was also useful in dispensing other buying information.

When we inquired about how much a particular bed spring would be, the sales guy kept giving us irrelevant information. Then when I tried to make sense of his nonsense, he said "I can't be more clear....I don't understand why this is so hard for you to understand." ...Gee thanks.
Soon after that, another customer came in and asked how much a mattress would be if he paid in cash. The sales guy said something like, "All that would do for me is make me have to take a trip to the bank." What a jerk.
Note: I wouldn't know if all the other sales people there are so rude because that was my first and last time in that store.
