As others have said, the location is great for this place and some of the desserts looked good, although I didn't try any.  We stopped in there for lunch when we were running some errands in La Jolla and although the food wasn't bad, it was nothing memorable and I don't see myself going back.  This is a decent place to grab lunch but you can pay a few dollars more and open up a lot of better options.

The parking pretty much blows, which makes the location not so great for a coffee shop, at least in my opinion. If I'm looking for a place to relax and grab some coffee, I'd much rather pick a location with convenient parking. That being said, I'd only go here if meeting up with friends and making a night of t, or if I happen to be walking around downtown La Jolla already.

I know some people who are regulars here. I've been here a few times and found the teas to be decent. They had a nice selection of coffees, teas, and even some (hard) alcohol?!? I didn't try the pastries or desserts but they looked worth trying.

It was a pretty chill place to hang out. I appreciated the patio out front, although it was seriously packed and probably usually hard to get a spot on. I could see having to stake out tables even on the inside - this place seems to be popular, especially with the young adults. I saw some people trying to study here, despite how loud it was, but I guess no more loud than any other coffee shop. I wish this place was more convenient for me because I despise coffee chains. San Diego really needs more independent, local coffee shops. But, yea, this seems to be the happening place to be. Next time it's convenient for me to get to, I'll give it another shot.

I have been fooled people! Completely snookered by the overabundance of collegiate peeps and funky wobbly tables and overstuffed sofas. I thought this place was going to be a watering hole for the parched and shopped-weary  yokel locals. However, the cashier suggested the passionfruit ice tea as a popular drink....popular for who? The ones who like barely hint-able fruit substance in their iced down tea? I'm sure that it tastes good for everyone else, but I've had good tea people, if there's one thing we Asians do know, it's good tea...damn it!
And for someplace that prides itself with all the amenities, why don't they have liquid sweetener for customers instead of sugar crystals? That stuff don't dissolve in cold beverages!

Okay, okay...I'm calm...deep breaths....if there's anything I get hepped up on...it's tea.  Laura L. had the Vanilla Chai Freeze drink which we both thought was quite good but a little too sweet. It's enough to rot teeth, but in a good way.

I didn't think their european baked goods were appetizing. They looked like they've sat in the refrigerated section since the 60's.

Finally got over to Living Room Coffee for a second time, so now I feel like I can accurately review it.

This is a fun place to chill out and grab a hot cup on a rainy day or lunch. The first time I came here it was ubber-crowded, but that was most likely because a torrential downpour opened up on all of us in downtown La Jolla and we were all trying to take cover. However, the coffee and quiche I had that afternoon were brilliant.

Most recently had their California sandwich, which was superb and exactly what I was craving. Filling portions. The menu posted in front of the restaurant was an old one according to one of the servers, so my bf's sister was disappointed that her chicken salad sandwich did not, in fact, have grapes and walnuts as it was advertised (and I would have been too!). So, star lost for old menu out front.

Cool interior though, with lots of nooks and crannies to sit and relax. The art leaves much to be desired, so one more star lost. Over all not too shabby of a place to spend an afternoon.

One word: Blondies.

I order my usual drink, a Blondie, and walk down to La Jolla Cove to enjoy the ocean breeze, wave watch and sip the goodness of soy white mochas.

Friends don't let friends drink Starbucks.

I used to like this place way more than I do now.  It's pretty busy, but no free wifi, and the drinks are not that great.  I used to get their hot chocolate here, and was not very happy with them.

The one nice thing about it is the atmosphere is really chill and it's got a great location.  You can't really see the ocean from the back, but you get ocean breezes, which are nice.

Somehow, God knows why, I find myself in La Jolla on rare occasion.  My personal opinion of this 'hood is found somewhere in between the tame "Eat the Rich" by Aerosmith and "I hope Bin Laden strikes here next".  When I am here or anywhere for that matter, I desire 1 of 2 things, a great cup of coffee or a great pint of beer.

I've been dragged into this place a couple of times with company.  We are no longer friends.  My experiences can be summed up in the following, mostly true, short story.
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------

"Hey man, let's go get some coffee or something." says a former friend.

"Oh where should we go, we're in La Jolla?" I reply.

"How about the Living Room, that way we can grab something to eat too."

"Man, I don't know dude, I haven't really ever gotten good service there."

"Come on, just go," He snarled.

Before I knew it a struggle ensued and I was knocked over the head with a crowbar.  I awoke dazed, bleeding, and standing in a long line at the aforementioned cafe.

After the normal wait of eternity, I stood at the counter now an old, gray man, and I waited some more.  Praying fervently only to be noticed by one of the American Apparel Model Rip-offs that take the money and pour the caffiene, I nearly broke into geriatric tears and soiled my Depends.  Upon being noticed, I was shocked and happy, the wait was over.

"Hello person not cool enough to be standing in my cafe, how may I, ahem, help, ahem, you?" Asked the shiny prepubescent 20 year old standing behind the counter.

"Well sunny, I was hoping to get a cup of coffee..."

"Is that for here or to go?" He rudely interjected.

"Here. I was also hoping to get a sandwich..."

Interrupting me again the future coke addict stated, "We're out of those."

"Oh how about a..."

"Yep, out of those too."

I was obviously wasting his time so I cut to the chase, "OK then, just the coffee.  By the way, how hot is your coffee?"

"It is Starbucks hot...times infinity, infinity times."

"Hotter than Starbucks, I didn't know that was possible." I replied in awe and fear.

"Yes old man, our coffee is so hot it would burn the sun and melt light.  Oh and that will be a bazillion dollars and your both your kidneys."

Paying up, I felt doom and death linger over me like the dinner bell had been run.  After another eternal wait, my coffee was delivered to me by a dwarf wearing a HAZMAT suit.  Upon first sip my tongue ripped itself out of my mouth, and ran for the door flipping me off on his way out.  That was it, I then knew this coffee was good for only one thing, and that thing not being consumption.  So I walked over to my friend who dragged me in here in the first place, took off the lid to my cup, and poured it on him.  He melted.

Oh, the Living Room in La Jolla. I used to think you were good, but since you've gotten older you've aged badly. Or maybe I just don't see you in the way I used to? Regardless, I just don't love you anymore. In fact, you disgust me. And you smell.

I sometimes work in the La Jolla area, and on my lunches I enjoy getting a coffee. I sometimes go to the Living Room, but I don't really enjoy it so much. For one, it's always warm inside. Let's just put it this way, no matter what the temperature is outside, you can count on it being warmer inside the Living Room. Maybe that's a good thing for you? Maybe you have arthritis and you'd prefer being in a warmer climate?

But the heat is not something I can tolerate so well. But still, I don't mind going to a place that's warm inside if the drinks are good. I can, you know, get my drink and go. But the drinks aren't so good here. I mean, they're just below average. C minus to be exact. And the same goes for the food.

I just recently ordered a cup of organic coffee from here, and it tasted like cursed lavenders. Their standard (non-organic) drip coffee isn't bad, but not especially good either.

It has gotten to the point that I will actually walk out of my way to go to the Starbucks on Prospect during my break. Yes, you read that correctly. And I really dislike Starbucks. Still, at least I can count on it being consistent and a more comfortable room temperature, and better service.

Totally a 3.5 star place, but I am rounding down because no one could help me with trying to get online. The drinks are of coffee house quality and no matter which location in San Diego, it's going to be packed, which makes it bad to bring your laptop too in the first place...bring a weapon to fight for an outlet. Recommendation: Half Mexican Half White mocha (I call it the "Esteban" because I'm a half breed of my Beaner mom and Cracker dad). Studying is OK when you manage a table and if your able to drown out the ambient noise. One of my favorite places to go.

One winter's day in 1995, a group of college classmates and I came to the Living Room to study. Over the next three years you could find us there cramming for midterms and finals and getting into circular arguments over politics and religion.

I returned to La Jolla last year, and drop in from time to time for a cup of nostalgia . . . I was there yesterday. I guess the place has changed a little along with the ownership a while back. It has a slightly different vibe now. But I don't think it's as bad as some folks say it is. I haven't encountered any attitudes yet.

You'll find lots of foreign students there, but that's nothing new and I've always enjoyed the diversity. It IS over priced. But it's location, two blocks from the Cove, is choice.

One star deduction for over priced, mediocre coffee, and one star deduction for over-priced, mediocre food.

I am going to use a word that many previous reviewers used to describe this place - FUNKY.  And I like funky.

The help seems kind of bi-polar.  One night I studied there and they were peppy and constantly cracking jokes.  Another night they were completely serious and verging on grumpy.  So it goes.

Recommendations:  White Hot Chocolate or their cappuccino.
Their food LOOKS good but I've never tried any.  Though I did overhear a fellow patron raving about her slice of cheesecake.

It can get super-crowded, be warned.  And sometimes full of Bishops (high school) kids, which can be overwhelming.  But if you can handle the noise, I'd say give it a try!

Refreshingly funky for a La Jolla joint! The last time I came here was on a date, and we sat outside because it was so crowded. Today I finally made it inside, and it was wonderful! Very cozy vibe and my tea was delicious (alas, it's hard to mess up tea), but the reason for this review? The BAKLAVA. As the child of an awesome baklava-bakin' mama, I'm extremely picky about it, and this is the best I've ever had outside of home.

I was in a hurry today, but I noticed the menu is extensive and includes sandwiches, so I'll be back for lunch someday. An update to follow!

I was in deep trouble, faced with a problem that I couldn't solve using my regular tactics.   I needed a solution and fast.
My classmates were meeting for study group at the Living Room.  No surprise there, the place is packed with study buddies.
But I didn't know them, and I didn't know the place has beer.  They sell beer.

Beer.

Beer.

beer.

I walk in, skin crawling... it was warm and crowded.  Purposefully mismatched furniture, and a low ceiling, full wall mirrors so I could see myself, there, like a caged animal at the zoo, uncomfortably sober.  I hesitated. The cartoon Toucan cheered me on "You CAN DOOOO IT!!!!"  like he always does.

I moved to play on the Internet while my classmates formed an answer to the problem. The Living Room does not have Wifi.  WHAT? NO WIFI!!!!  So I entertained myself with bland pea soup while they worked away, and I made faces, as if  I too were concentrating.  hmmm! Verrrry interesting!

No answer!!!

"What is the max. allowable area of a 3 story A-3 occupancy in CA?"

You need the construction type.

As a drastic last option....

*serious tone*

I then organized class wide mutiny.

Each student was assigned their respective roles in my midterm mutiny:

I stood triumphantly, rolled the homework into a funnel, and yelled down the tube at them:

"You!" *pointing*   "Whine!"  I demanded.

"You hear me!? Whine like crazy!  Its NOT FAIR!!!"

"YOU!"  *point*  "Act like you're going to cry!  She never told us this!" *waving arm in dismissal...* "NEVER!  This is NOT on the syllabus!"

"YOU, you and YOU!" *pointing* "Just keep asking questions!  We didn't review this!  We don't understand this question!  What does this mean?"  "Tire her out with questions!"

"You!"  I pointed at the slight kid with pimples... and squinted "Tell her..  'My father will beat me if I on't get an A.'"

"Everyone!  When she walks in, raise your hand immediately!
ACT CONFUSED!!!!  Ask question after question!  She can't fail us all!!!"

I marched back and forth in front of them, ranting my lunatic plans...  The toucan marched along behind me, with his little army hat on, mimicing my movements... the students stared up, aghast, black swimming pools for pupils... taking it all in.  I don't know if they were scared or inspired.
***

Next day before the test, I turned around to Kevin, a co-conspirator and whispered loudly "PSSSST Kevin!  Start!    Now!"

Kevin:  "Huh?"

then I made a dire mistake of scowling and loudly whispering

"KEVIN!!!!" I scolded "DON'T YOU REMEMBER LAST NIGHT!?"

I should have given the phrase some thought.  People thought I meant something else.   As a class, we managed to stall her quite a bit and she conceded some answers.

The Living Room is not really a place you'd go to eat... more a place to study.  Back in the day when i was a teenager, before I had status and before I had a pager...  it used to be pitch black  and goth in The Livingroom, but then fire was invented.  I mean to say.... then the internet and study groups came along.

A baseball park was built instead of a library.  Remember that?  1996.  This is the library now.  A crappy cup of coffee is your admittance.

A couple of my friends wanted to smoke some hookah, and I was craving a chai latte, so we decided to go to the Living Room. The food was really expensive (ten bucks for 3-4 inches of sandwich). But the soy chai latte I got was rather yummy, although not quite worth the five bucks I paid for it.

Out of our group of four, only two of us actually wanted to smoke, so they went to go get a hookah. When it arrived, they told us that we couldn't sit at the same table as our hookah-smoking friends. We offered to present our ID's  (we're all 18+) so we could all sit together, but to no avail. So we settled at two tables, and I decided to light a cigarette to spite them.

It gets better. The management then sent someone to babysit us to make sure that only the ones who were allowed to present ID were smoking, so some random dude who works there sat a couple tables away and watched us for the remainder of our stay there.

He didn't offer any assistance when it came time to light some more coals, and when I busted out my lighter to light a coal--not smoke, just lighting a coal--he notified management and they took the hookah away with two coals to go.

My friends decided to buy their own hookah that night. It's shaped like an apple and has disco lights :)

I used to love this place. Then one day (about three or four years ago) I was asked not to read in public here.  As in, I was reading a book.

I looked around and there were at least six people on laptops who seemed to be camped out for the day (I had just purchased my drink and sat down).

The staff member pointed out a sign to me that indicated something like 'no homework' -- I wasn't doing homework, I was reading for leisure, but that was enough to make me never want to go back.

I often stop in here when in town. The biggest draw for me is the ambiance - an aforementioned funkiness that still manages to be relaxing.

The coffee options are decent but not extraordinary, and the food...sufficient but somewhat forgettable. I've always been here in the early morning, and can't really remember anything I've had.

A great place to meet international students and travellers who want to practice their English and maybe after a few coffees their French, if you catch my drift...but you can just bat your eyelashes and demur.

For a place on Prospect, it has a lot of funkiness and character.

The furniture looks like a dozen different people each went to a different vintage furniture store and raided the dinette sets. Every set of chairs is different, and the tables range from huge dinner-sized to tiny end tables. Very eclectic, and creates a nice feel.

It's centrally located on Prospect, and serves as a good rendezvous point  for meeting or getting a pick-me-up after walking around.

Expensive, but consistently good.

Totally overpriced!!! This is definitely one place that should have free wireless internet, but doesn't. $6 a day? It's not like this is some big corporate-run business, so what's with the attitude?

For you study folks, this is a good study place. But beverages and food are overpriced. I usually get a chai latte, it's quite sweet here but I like the flavor nonetheless.

There's an outlet for your laptop on the far right, by the windows.

It's a good pretty good place to study. But seriously, the prices turn me off.

I thought the "Best of La Jolla Night Life" sticker outside was funny.  It might be one of the ONLY places open past 8pm.  Gimme a break.  So of course, everyone will flock here.  But, all sarcasm aside, even if I had alternatives, I would've still loved this place.

What drew us was the liveliness, people smoking hookah outside, diversity of menu (quiches, sandwiches, wraps, hummus, dolmas,...), and several couches and tables.

I don't know if going on a weeknight during a holiday break makes a difference.  There were many tables still open.  I didn't have a laptop so the outlets made no diff to me.  I had white chocolate cocoa, sweet and smothered in whipped cream.  Then as if that wasn't sweet enough, I had a fruit custard tart with pineapples, kiwi, and strawberries.  What was I thinking.  I still enjoyed it, a little on the pricey side for dessert, but it is La Jolla.

Overpriced but everything does taste pretty gooood. Especially the baklava! And the suizerra mocha is one of my favorite drinks.

People basically camp out here with tons of study books but I wouldn't be able to, it's way too loud to actually focus.

It's fun to eavesdrop here though..

It's a good destination for a person craving good coffee in La Jolla. The atmosphere in the Living Room is very upbeat - usually you can see young crowd there (and here comes the drawback - it's hard to find a place to sit and it's a kind of noisy!). However, they're open till late and will always serve you a good coffee or tea (their selection is awesome!!!).

Ill start by saying that you will probably hate it or love it. all i know is I get my best work done at the Living Room. i love love love all the energy and action around me and can't get anything done in a stuffy quiet library. that being said, there are other options for coffee houses. I like it here because its cozy and comfy and has a view of the water if you nab the right seat. the food is marginal, but the drinks are good....of course its not cheap, this is La Jolla, grow up and pay the fee for being in Downtown LaJo with a fab view, or get out. I also find the people that work there to be quite pleasant and I can get a 2 dollar cup of tea (gooood full leaf tea!) and sit for 6 hours without being hassled.

Great place to meet up with friends, read a book, or work on the laptop. The atmosphere is very lively and young. And it isn't uber-cool super-trendy so you don't have to worry about dressing like Bjork to feel comfortable here.

The coffee here is just horrible. I prefer freeze-fried Taster's Choice to their crap. Also, the food sucks (both sweet and savory). I don't have a hatred of this place. Honestly, I have had a lot of their food so it's not like I am biased after having a bad chocolate pie or anything.

Try to score a table by the windows (the west side of the restaurant). That way you can open or close the windows depending on how cold or warm you are since if you are stuck in the middle of the coffee shop, it can get stuffy.

This review is valid only for Sunday morning visits.  If you are interested in coming on a different day or time, keep moving, feller.

If you can find a seat at the back, this is one of the best places to kill a Sunday morning.  Is the food spectacular?  No, but big deal.  Grab a big newspaper or magazine and order a bagel or fruit plate or something and a fishbowl of coffee and settle into one of the couches on a lazy--or better yet, rainy--morning.

It's relaxing and homey.  Now don't take my seat in the back.

Wasn't too impressed with this place- it was crowded, over priced, and the food wasn't even that great. I liked the decor though. Too bad it was too crowded for me to enjoy it.

Coffee shop and hookah bar, also makes julienne fries! Okay, horrible Aladdin reference, and also, only the first two are true.

Not a bad place to study, but not good if you're easily distracted or don't do loud. Alas, they don't sell earplugs. However, the music is good fun, and that, perhaps is the most distracting part. That, and the music is on repeat. Sigh. Stay for too long, and you've heard it all!

The tea was pretty good, and I think it was my fault for overbrewing. However, the Grand Marnier dessert was to die for! (I'm a sucker for chocolate and orange.)

Just come and hang out! It's more fun than staying at home ... after all, who doesn't want to stress out in public?

great selection of drinks!  the food is a bit pricey, but not so much that it ruins the experience.  sit outside for some fun people viewing and nice beachy weather.  the crowd is a nice mix, from families, to the funky, to the paris hilton wannabes...and their little dogs too.

The best thing going for The Living Room is that it is open until midnight.  That seems to be extremely rare in southern California.

The furniture is interesting and varied, but it is also old, falling apart, improperly sized, and usually unstable (which is especially bad if you are putting both steaming hot coffee and either a laptop or a part of your person on it).

The meal-type food and beverages are both mediocre, but the deserts are first-rate.  One can get alcoholic drinks here as well which makes this place part bar (though still nothing like a good coffee bar should be); that is especially useful in "mixed crowds" where people who want to drink coffee and hang out in a cafe environment can co-mingle with friends who want booze.

Working/studying here is stupid.  They only have a couple of places to plug in a laptop, the lighting is too low to read comfortably in most seats, it's generally very noisy, and there is no wireless connection at all.  Yet many people (including me) do come here to do work, mostly owing to it being open until midnight.

Even though it is only a middle-of-the-road cafe by my standards, it's still very good for San Diego -- bested only by Pannikin down the street which closes before I even get off work.

I've been here many times, and have always had a good experience. The coffees aren't as bold as Starbucks (overcaffeinated), but the drinks have good flavor and come out hot, as opposed to warm at other coffee shops. The prices are fair for their drinks. I like how they only have a small (actually medium) and large size drinks. This makes it a lot more convenient.

The only possible complaint would be that there is only one bathroom for either gender.

The atmosphere is great too, with large tables and beautiful view.

I went through a phase where I was drawing here 5 nights a week...

Spacing and Location: Quite small compared to its SDSU counterpart, on weekends and the busier nights you'd be lucky to get a seat. But has ocean view by the windows, and the outside area is on Prospect ~ real bubbly atmosphere

Coffee and Food: I am a house coffee kinda guy, and their beans never really made an impression on me. I did, however, enjoy their iced green tea immensely. Food is on the Downtown La Jolla price range and is not particularly good.

Atmosphere: Monday, Tuesday nights are the best nights to draw with the least distractions. Friday, Saturday late nights are when hot girls show up. Avoid Saturday and Sunday morning ~afternoon, tourists and families crowd the caf and leave a mess of crumbs and noise.

Regulars: There's an elderly homeless couple that comes 2, 3 nights a week. They always sit on the pink loveseat near the windows on the cream and sugar side to read newspaper. They really need a shower, someone please help them out on that. The outside area has a lot of European travelers and Russians on a regular basis.

This is a good place to go if you are one of those laptop guys who sits around in coffee shops, because the decor is very comfortable and the enviroment is cool.   There is just one problem.... I LIKE GOOD COFFEE...The espresso here tastes like costco bargain coffee, not enough crema and the milk is not frothed very well.  The bubbles are too big so you dont get the smooth creamy texture one expects from a cappuchino.

They serve Turkish coffee here, yes it is epsresso, but they do put some cardamom in it... plus I don't know of any public establishment you can get it served in a dubrek or anything similar. So, here I go if I am close and need that real coffee break. **Note: I found a dubrek a couple of thousand miles away in Boston.

I am entirely of two minds when thinking about this Living Room Cafe.  The location is nice, and the coffee is pretty good, yet I can't really let go my resentment as an undergraduate at the outright hostility I experienced on occasion while trying to get my reading done by some of the staff.

That said, I also had plenty of great times sitting and reading, staring out at the ocean out of their windows, or just talking to friends on their delightfully mismatched furniture.  Some of the staff are amazingly friendly and really personable; others are absolutely bitchy.  Good luck.

The best drink to get?  Mint Mocha.  It's awesome.
If you're hungry, grab their pita and humus.  It's vaguely delicious.

I would have given it no stars if I could have, but apparently one star is the minimum.  I went here on a Saturday evening and it was crowded, noisy, and there weren't enough outlets for laptops and they didn't have wireless internet.  The drinks were way too expensive for what you got.  On top of all of this, the service was just awful.  When I asked if I could have my drink nonfat (a pretty common request), his response was "no, not really."  Sometimes La Jolla stores can get away with being over-priced because of the nice ambiance, high quality products, and good service.  This place had none of these things.  I won't return.

This is my favorite place to go when I'm at La Jolla Shores.  The coffee is decent, and on weekends they have some sort of omelet bar.

The place is kind of dim, but all the caffeine dilates my pupils, and my eyes adjust in no time.  I also like their Thrift Store Chic mismatched furniture.

There are better cafes in other places, but this is the best in the La Jolla Shores area.
