Better than Chez Panisse.
Suggestion: Start with mussels and pomme frittes. They go deliciously wonderfully together.
For two people, I would then order one larger dish. We ordered lamb skewers which were served with a fun lemon pistachio chutney over fregola (a type of small pasta I had never had before).
Finished with their "signature dessert" coupe a cote--highly recommended for chocolate lovers.
Came to $50 (with tax). Great service and atmosphere, will come back! -
Review from Joyce B.
This place has been on my to-go list for YEARS, ever since I heard it from my friend about how good their mussels are.
I definitely think the ambience here is more for romantic dinners and this would be an awesome place to bring a date bc the lighting inside is quite dark.
I came here with my friend and they seated us outside, which was awesome esp because it was still bright outside.
We ordered the Pommes Frites and Mussels to start and decided to wait to see how big are the portion sizes before we order more food. The Pommes Frites were so-so actually, except the dipping cream was good. But I wouldn't say it's amazing. And since it was cold, our fries got cold pretty quickly. The mussels are a must try dish! It's all in the sauce. I couldn't get enough of it that we (mostly me) finished the 3 pieces of bread they gave and we had 2 extra plates of bread. I think we literally licked the plate clean bc the sauce was so good. Since we were pretty full, we ordered the Bittersweet Chocolate Ice Cream, which comes with brownies. It was quite good especially because it's not too sweet. It is quite dense and rich but I would recommend trying it.
Overall, it's a great experience here and the service is superb! -

Made reservations for 6:15 on a Saturday. The bar was pretty empty for most of the time we were there, so I would imagine that you could usually just swing by to eat at the bar if you can't get a reservation.
- Pommes frittes: 5 stars! Crispy w/great flavor
- Asparagus flatbread: 5 stars! Flavorful & has onions & a bit of garlicky-ness
- Halibut: 4 stars. Crunchy crust, but I felt like the fish itself could've had more flavor. Really tender & soft though.
- (Dessert) Rhubarb Gratin: 2 stars. The strawberry ice cream was delicious, but it was on top of this dry cake w/tangy rhubarb at the bottom. We didn't feel like finishing it - and this coming from a woman who LOVES desserts and usually finishes the whole serving... not a good sign.
Totally looking forward to returning to try more items! -

Ambiance is romantic, cozy low lighting, and noise level is average. The menu is small plates, but a little bit larger portion than you would be used to.
Started with bottle of wine, falaffel balls, sardine croustinis and linguist flat bread. They all tasted great, the sardines were a challenge as I normally do not eat them, but the combo with the lemon and sauce and greens made it very unique.
We finished with the halibut, which I highly recommend, crust outside, super flaky and tender inside, and mashed potatoes are AMAZING.
I didn't have desert... but I would go back and try it... -

The wife and I had dinner here last Saturday to celebrate our anniversary and it was absolutely perfect. Thanks Yelp community for recommending the mussels and pommes frites as a starter. They were great and went perfectly with my spot on manhattan. The sauce the mussels were cooked in was so tasty that i quickly used up all the bread sopping it up. Our server came over with a knowing smile and offered more bread, so as to "not leave any sauce behind". How great is that. Initially the wife and I ordered the swordfish to share as our main course but when it showed up my hungry eyes screamed out you need to order more. Magically a delicious steak was delivered to our table 5 minutes later. The service was dead on all night, our server wasn't intrusive in the slightest way but at the same time my drink never went dry.

I decided to come here for dinner last minute on a Friday night. Tables were full until 9 pm but we still decided to come here anyway. When we arrived at the restaurant, I was surprised to see how busy it still was, even though it was way past dinner time. I didn't even begin to empty out until past 10 pm. The food was delicious (ordered the mussels, flatbread, and paella). The service was good, with an exception to the hostess. When we arrived, no one greeted us and the hostess was no where to be found for at least 15 minutes. If I didn't already have reservations, I would have left and gone to another restaurant down the street. Other than that, I had a good dining experience here. It's really dim and has an intimate vibe, nice for a dinner date.

I went with three friends on a Friday night, and were promptly seated in their back patio. The service was excellent, and the food was beyond words. It was a very cozy place, and I appreciated that even though there were a lot of people you couldn't really hear them (which is so important to me!). Definitely try their cheeses and the coupe a cote! You won't be disappointed.

These guys know how to serve up some super tasty legit French-inspired grub.
The mussels are awesome (but giant...it could have easily served 4 people).
The rotating flatbreads are kinda crazy (ours had lamb, moroccan + greek spices, and olives).
The rilettes are amazing (but i'm a sucker for rilettes anywhere really).
The cocktails are pretty tasty, not the best I've ever had, but then again I've had quite a few adult beverages. I guess they run a bit on the sweet side for my taste, but the flavors are there.
Super cute decor. Toasty temperatures. Old school French music. Friendly service. Happy times.Listed in: fancy pants grub - sf

My husband and I went back, but this time without the kids. We both tried a cocktail each, both were excellent. Then I had a flight of Italian wines, which I loved.
We also had food the arugula salad and the basques pork ribs, both were right on.
The staff was great again. I love this place!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Took the BF here for a little nightcap and some small plates. We got seated immediately, and after perusing the menu, decided on a couple of my usual favorites plus some cocktails:
Croque Monsieur - now that the bf has a panini maker, it's kinda silly to order a sandwich at a restaurant but the ham they use here is OFF THE CHAIN.
Sardine Crostini - you obviously have to like sardines for this one but the combination of flavors was amazing.
Pommes Frites - even on my brokest days I would always come here and drop a few bucks on a plate of their fries, and now that I've been working in Silicon Valley for 6 years, I'd still drive the extra mile for them. More aioli please.
And our drinks:
Bergamot & Bourbon - this was amazing. Tasted like lemonade with an aftertaste of bourbon
The name of the drink I had escapes me, but it was something with blood orange and was refreshing without being too sweet.
=====
I'm still wondering about the gastronomic beat down Josua P. had - was this a tasting menu? Is this an option for non-food-industry civilians? If so, I want!
Love love love this place. Can't wait to come back in April... tax return HOLLA!!!!!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Had an awesome bachelorette dinner here with my bffs. Fancy place, but we arrived in flip flops (with beautifully manicured toes) and sat out back in the tented heat lamped area.
The corking fee is waived if you buy a bottle from their list. (Smart!)
Plates to share, tapas style - but not tiny, stingy portions.
- mussels were great quality, but I didn't like the flavor of the broth - too much fennel making it too bitter.
- sardine crostini, which Vanessa attempted to send back (since Seong ninja ordered it) was not bad. Not something I'd normally order, but it was tasty.
- pomme frites - meh.
- coq a vin - meh, I think you can find better on the menu. Not bad, just a lot more flavor in some of the other dishes
- seared seabass - excellent
- marquez sausage flatbread - very tasty, probably my favorite dish of the night!
A wonderful dinner with my wonderful friends -

Comfy environment, i sat at the bar because we couldn't get a table without a reservation on a Saturday evening, which was cool. the bartender was very nice, forgot to ask her name, but she made really good cocktails, i had the house sangria, which was yummy. food was good too, definitely try the asparagus flatbread.

I had a super awesome date here on Friday evening (2.17.12).
We found FREE parking super quick around the corner and only had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. The hostess was cool when we said we'd head across the street for a bit and come back.
We decided to get a drink at the divey-ish bar across the street. Good STRONG drinks for a decent price.
We got back just in time to be seated in the back room in a nice corner table. The service is great and the food is super yum!
We had the following:
Mussels - OMG OMG OMG - if you like mussels swimming in a delicious butter/wine/garlic/chili pepper/cream sauce, you'll LOVE this dish. Get this dish ASAP!
Pomme Frites - yes, they are good - crunchy, not greasy and nicely salted
Smoked salmon on some kind of bread - don't bother. It was good but a bit pricey for the quantity
Duck and cheese flatbread - don't bother. Like the salmon, it was good but not worth it
My suggestion - get two orders of the mussels with extra bread, an order of the pommes frites and probably some kind of salad. That's what I'm gonna do the next time I go! -

This place is all kinds of awesomeness. Although the food can be a bit on the pricey side, but it was worth the dining. For a table of 4, we ordered quite a few dishes and
drinks to share and everything was just so tasty!
Food: The broccoli flatbread and lamb sausage flatbread was delicious. I'm not sure what kind of cheese were on it, but it had a great aroma. Don't forget the fries. It's a very generous portion, so beware! Mussels were a great and the sauce came with extra bread if you want for dipping. Got the chicken leg and it was cooked with all kinds of goodness. Now I don't ordinarily order chicken, but this was not some slab of chicken breast with sauce thrown on it. We were so full, but we managed to order the cheesecake which is not like your typical cheesecake. It was topped with glazed pears and it was in circular-shape, not a slice. OMG, so yum!
Drinks: Great selection of cocktails and wine selection.
Service: Came by to check on us each time something came out. They were nice about asking what we wanted to serve first since everything was shared, but they did a good job of staggering them and not making us wait.
Bottom Line: I would definitely go back. It's a great date night spot. For a Monday night, the place was packed, so make reservations! -

Went once, had good impressions, went back again, still not disappointed.
-Great ambiance (dimmed lights, candles, warm temperatures, soft music) romantic indeed.
-The wait can be a bit long..
-Pommes frites are to die for.
-Portions aren't too big, but enough to fill you up.
-Tried the mussles - mouth watering delicious especially with the bread
-I also enjoyed the steak but if you're feeling venturous then try the quail (yum!)
Try not to go on special occasions like valentines or else the wait will be long. If you want to take your bread to go, the server might just give you a half loaf uncut (mmm bread). -
Review from Ada T.
One of my very favorite restaurants in the East Bay.
I love that the Bay Area is super down to earth and that food is prioritized over atmosphere. But every once in awhile, you want something more than just lots of light and spare wood furnishings, and A Cote fulfills that quite well. The atmosphere is very romantic and intimate. I absolutely adore their back patio. In the winter, they drape tapestries to make it seem enclosed, and I almost like it more than in the summer.
But of course, atmosphere would be nothing without food to back it up. A Cote always delivers, though. Their pommes frites are a must-order -- herby double fried salty goodness. The rest of the menu always changes, but it's usually pretty long so there's something for everyone. Their flatbreads are always a winner, and they make a good cheese plate too. The only criticism I have of the restaurant is that their dessert menu is not very inspired, and I've never had anything memorable off it.
They should also be lauded for being one of the few restaurants open after 10pm in the Rockridge/Elmwood area.
I have had many happy dinners at A Cote, and look forward to more. -

Occasion: Came here to celebrate a birthday with a party size of about 15. We had made reservations prior and we got our table as promised.
WINE:
Red Wine, Monastrell-Southeastern Spain: recommended by our waitress over the pinot noir and it was perfect. Slightly sweet, fragrant and smooth. Great recommendation and went perfectly well with our meal.
DINE:
Everything is served tapas style and is meant to be shared. She recommended that each person order 2-3 dishes. Everything is delicious, but it was hard to share everything. I wish the waiter had given better advice on how we could have placed our order more accordingly. I felt like we didn't order enough.
Some Highlights:
Mussels
Pomme Frites
Croque Monsieur
Duck Confit Flatbread
Just so so:
Scallops
Gnocchi
Braised short ribs
Rabbit Boudin Blanc
SWEETS:
You can't have a birthday dinner without some desserts...so we ordered a few to share:
Banana cream pie
Ice Cream Sandwich
Coupe A Cote
They were all delicious!

We ordered the skirt steak, the quail, and the fritters. The skirt steak tasted like shoe leather, and the bread it was served on was so soaked in sauce that it was unrecognizable. The quail was undercooked, and the polenta it was served in had so much butter and cream in it that my fork nearly stood straight up in it. The fritters were the only serviceable item, and they weren't memorable.
If you want to pick up some fries, then A Cote is a good choice. If you like fresh meat that is cooked properly, or well balanced, thoughtful dishes that present well, or food that doesn't make you want to vom (yeah I said vom, what?) then avoid.
I haven't been this disappointed in a meal in a really, really long time, and I hate to write this review. :( -

Took my mom and her friend here to dispel their horrified impression of Oakland. They enjoyed the restaurant and the food - especially the mussels.
The only thing is, the server recommended 2-3 plates per person, as though this was a tapas bar. We ordered 5 dishes total and it was still too much food! So if you are a lady who lunches, be warned that these are larger plates. -

This is my "go to" spot for mussels in Pernod and cream. After indulging in the delicious little sea creatures I dip the fresh french bread in the broth. OMG. And then there is the deep fried artichoke, hot, crispy with a hint of spicy. If you are looking for small plates to share with friends and a glass of Soave, this is the location. Even the shape of the rooms reminds me of a petite bistro. Spend an evening in Paris without taking your shoes off. Sit at the family table or get a ring side seat at the bar and take it all in. College Avenue or Cote d'Azure?

Had the most amazing dessert at this restaurant:
Strawberry Panzanella: strawberries, candied brioche, micro basil, creme fraiche. It was so well balanced. I haven't seen it on the online menu since then but if it ever comes back, I'm coming here!
The pommes frites are also really good and the aioli is on point.
The entrees were meh.
Price is pretty standard for this area of College. Restaurant has good ambience. -

Went here for Valentines Day with my girl. We had a great time and experience!
1) Parking was super easy to find (for dinner especially)
2) The service was great. The waitresses were very helpful and gave some ideas on what to get since we have never been there before.
3) The food was delicious. I wish that some of the dishes were bigger.
The price is a little on the high side, but if you are going there for a special occasion it is definitely worth it.
Will definitely go back there. -

We made two good choices and one bad one here. Let's start with the good.
Instead of ordering a flight of wines from the menu as they were planned, we took some of the least expensive wines from each of 4 planned flights. This way, we got 4 half glasses for $21. Most of the menu flights would have like a $5, $8, and a $9 on them, thus totalling $22 for only three. The quality of the less expensive wines was still rather good in our opinion, as we expected. Went with two whites from Austria, and Italy; a red from Greece; and a Rose from France. The Italian one had particularly interesting flavor.
The other good choice was the pomme frites. They were delicious and abundant.
Unfortunately, we kinda screwed up by ordering the crispy artichokes. Definitely do not order these unless you are obsessed with artichokes. It was a tiny serving, and a lot of it was just the leaves! Compared to the pomme frites, you would have thought we were at a different restaurant.
Ambiance is great, and I'd go back. The best way to get out of here without spending a grip is to create your own flight as mentioned above, and split an app and an entree. If you choose wisely, I think that would be enough food for two. -

2nd time around: The dessert makes up for the bad plates we had. I don't know why the chefs think serving bread under tough meat and its sauce is a good idea. After the 2nd bite, the bread is nasty-soggy and they did this on two plates. Dumb. My jaw was exhausted from chewing on the extremely tough meat that wasn't even good. So Sad.
This place is 50/50 for me. The first time, the items on the menu I had were great. The second time all of my favs were gone from the menu and replaced with nasty soggy tough overpriced stuff.
Next time, if there is a next time, I'll just go for the bittersweet chocolate ice cream dessert thing. I hate chocolate ice cream but I love that dessert.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Alright, so I'm a bit confused. I feel like I went to a completely different restaurant than the one the reviews here talk about.
Went here for a girls' night expecting some good stuff, but left extremely disappointed. First off, our server was great and attentive, and actually, that would be the only positive here.
We only ordered 4 dishes to share because we had other things waiting for us at one of the girls' apartments. We got the mussels, the brisket, the pomme frites, and the empanadas.
Actually, now that I think about it, the empanadas came with a green sauce that was really delicious with a nice kick, but the empanadas themselves weren't anything spectacular. The mussels, which I'd been looking forward to were bland and kind of on the puny side. The brisket was absolutely flavorless and I even tried swirling a piece in the sauce a few times to get more flavor, but that was a fail. Brisket in pho has more flavor. What else? Oh, the pomme frites...yea, they weren't great either, not crispy and the dipping sauce should have just been ketchup.
This review is more of a reminder to not go. Also, this was pretty much the consensus between the girls I was with. (Maybe one more try for some of the entrees, but we'll see.) -

I like this restaurant because it's casual but with an upscale attitude. They have a nice menu selection sure to please most appetites. The mussels were quite good and a nice one to share for groups. What I like most about A Cote is their fantastic wine list! I appreciate their huge selection of wines from around the world especially in the French department. Service was great. Our server couldn't have been nicer or more knowledgeable. We'll keep coming back.

Oakland, CA
Came for an early V-day dinner. I'll admit, when I first entered I felt a little out of place as the whole restaurant was filled with customers at least 20 years older than me. But once I had the food, I couldn't care less. (Plus, our reservations were a little early so when we started eating more younger people showed up)
Like other yelpers mentioned, the atmosphere is very romantic and intimate. The lights were so dim that I saw other people taking out mini flashlights to look at their menus. There was a pretty good selection of food on the menu and it was also interesting how it was family style which is great because then I can try more food. :)
Got the pomme frites which looked like a lot when it arrived. But it disappeared pretty fast. The fries themselves were a little on the salty side, but the aioli it came with was a perfect sauce for dipping.
Also got the red butter lettuce salad which was meh. The lettuce was so big compared to its toppings we had to chop it up a bit to be able to even bite into it. Although everything in the salad was fresh.
We got the pork entree which was good although the portion did not seem to match its price and the simple fact that it's an entree.
However, we were pretty full after the three dishes. If we come back, I want to try the mussels because all the tables around us ordered it and it looked really good. Too bad we were too full or else we were thinking of getting it too.
Overall, the food was great. And If you look at the total price for three dishes, it didn't seem expensive at all for a dinner out (although it would probably get expensive if you go often casually). The dessert menu didn't look too exciting but I would definitely go again just to try the other food items on the menu. -

East Bay, CA
A Cote remains one of our family's favorite restaurants. The small plates are a great way to sample many different dishes and they rotate the dishes based on what seasonal ingredients are available. A few items are always on the menu (Pomme frittes/croque monsieur etc) but there is always something new each time we visit. They have a full bar with some clever drinks and an eclectic wine list that the servers can easily help you make choices from since i didn't recognize most of the wines. The servers tend to be very helpful although sometimes they don't do a great job of organizing the delivery of the various plates--ie they just show up in no apparent order--BUT you can easily tell them the order in which you would like the food to come. It gets crowded very early so even if you get there at 6 you often have to wait a while. Overall we love the place and find the experience outstanding.

We've been here several times -- with friends at a table and with the two of us at the bar. Sitting at the bar together has always been the most fun and is what brings us back. The bartenders are a pleasure to be around and service is just right.
The food is great but on our last visit, we were really disappointed by the sea bass. It lacked flavor but looked pretty on the plate. I had the salmon with crème fraîche on flatbread, one of my favorites.
I give the cocktails high marks and the bartenders even higher marks. Although the food can sometimes be "eh" when it comes to matching expectations, the drinks, people, and ambience are worth it. -

The cocktails are very well-made, and the selection of brandies for dessert is nice. The mussels cooked in Pernod were wonderful. Service was professional.
The rest of the food was of decent quality but overpriced. A number of dishes were underwhelming surprises when they came to the table - okay to taste, but not amazing enough to justify the price. -

This is my sister & brother-in-law's favorite restaurant, so they treated us to an evening here recently as thanks for helping with house/pet sitting duties...worth the $ and an awesome place for a special night out.
We got the House Cured Salmon, Mussels and Pork Tenderloin Milanesa, as well as a Fromages plate with cheese from a Buffalo....each dish was fantastic, but the Mussels were by far the best, most enjoyed and will be enjoyed again! Menu changes frequently, so not able to give the exact name of the Fromage dish and will have to make sure the Mussels on it, when we go back. Added double bonus...Hubby enjoyed the beer selection and the service was A+!!! -
Review from Mike H.
I'd taken a date here after dinner, at her suggestion. We just had a couple drinks at the bar but really enjoyed the time. Hopefully the food is as good as the service and the drinks. Even the coffee was "strong," if you know what I mean.
What a great group of people tending. They were surprised we were on a first date because we seemed to be getting along well. So...clearly I'm susceptible to flattery. And then when I used the bathroom, they started dishing with my date about me! All good though.
I'm a fan of after-dinner drinks, aka digestifs, and A Cote's list has a good variety of choices at fair prices. The Taylor Fladgate is about the best among 10yr tawny ports, and $10 is good price...certainly better than what I've seen elsewhere. Pretty reasonable corkage fee also - $20. -

I usually come here for the cheese and the wine. However, the other night I finally managed to score a seat at the bar and I actually ordered some food.
I ordered the butternut squash soup. It had apples in the center which I thought was such a thoughtful and delicious touch to the dish.
Apparently, the go to dish here are the mussels. After trying them I can safely say. Everyone was right. I hate black mussels and yet I love clams and all other seafood. Now I know the problem was that I just hadn't had the right black mussels. These were to die for. I can tell you right now, I will be craving them very soon.
We also ordered the Salmon wrapped in pancetta with a celery root puree (much like mashed potatoes) with crispy artichokes ( i love artichokes and I didn't know they could taste this good). Yes, this dish was a winner.
Finally I finished the night with a pumpkin cake with panna cotta. It was good, but I would not get it again. However, I had previously had here, a different desert that looked like a twinky. This thing (if I were wearing socks would of knocked them off). So if they are offering this again, get this.
As far as wine goes, I'm not really sure you could get something wrong here. My boyfriend always gets something different and he loves everything.
Last, I did not know this until recently, but they have a patio. On a nice night it is highly coveted.
No matter what you eat, drink or where you sit, you'll be having a good time.Listed in: Best Tapas, Best Wine/ Flight selection in…
